california national guard risking their lives fighting through thick smoke and fire to save those evacuees. we know dozens of structures and potentially homes were lost. but also hundreds of lives were saved. >> we are completely trapped. there's fire on all sides all around us. >> reporter: the labor day weekend taking a terrifying turn for over 200 people in california's sierra national forest as flames, hot embers, and thick smoke from the creek fire quickly surrounded and trapped campers at mammoth pool reservoir. >> it was literally like, oh, my god there's fire there. >> reporter: juliana park and her friends who were hiking in the area were some of the last to make it out by car. >> the fire looks like it's going to just grab the car and we could feel the heat just throughout the vehicle. >> reporter: by saturday night, the fire had devoured over

36,000 acres. the race to save lives going airborne. >> i believe there's other people in the meadow. >> reporter: in the middle of the night, first responders rushing campers on military helicopters to reach safety. >> as soon as we were in the helicopters, we flew over the fires and you couldn't see anything but pitch black and fire. that's all we could see. >> reporter: we saw first hand why those evacuations were so critical. the smoke and haze has turned day tonight as firefighters face yet another challenge on the front line. >> many of the injuries are lacerations, broken bones, and those kind of things. and the kind of injuries you'd see when somebody's attempting to flee the fire. >> reporter: as ambulances rush to treat the injured, families and their young children grateful they survived. >> i'm glad to be alive. >> reporter: but across the state, the danger is still very real as flames fueled by triple

good morning >> good morning. you know, we started off by telling you all about the fires out west unfortunately we are not going to see any improvements to the conditions in the western part of the country we have red flag warnings extending from washington through oregon through california, into nevada and extending all the way into the rockies. with strong winds in the forecast and those continued dry conditions and really no rain in sight. we also have the heat that is going to continue for 40 million people under some sort of heat warning or heat advisory mostly heat warnings at this point. we are looking at record high temperatures today we could see a record being broken in las vegas. the record's 108 and we're forecasting a high of 112. fresno 110 that would beat the record in yuma, we'll be close to the it's going to be significantly record and in tucson, we're looking like we should break that record of 105 with a high of 106. where it is going to be cooler, it's going to be significantly cooler billings, montana, should be 30 degrees below average with a high of only 50 degrees today. then that colder air settles in. casper, wyoming, only 39 degrees for a high for a high we'll get to your local forecas.
