right now at 6:14 our microclimate weather alert continues due to unhealthy air quality and the high fire danger. and it will still be hot today as we take a look at san jose and our temperature trend at least throughout the morning we're looking at some quickly warming temperatures. by this afternoon we're in the mid-90s once again. we'll take a look at what's ahead for the rest of the week and talk about the winds coming up in the forecast. and, kari, we're still in24 the caldecott tunnel startg thr orinda. this crash now reportedly has westbound closed.

now there's a crash just past that but all the traffic held up in the caldecott. the bay bridge might be lighter but you still have the backup even if you're coming through oakland via the nimitz. thank you, mike. 6:16 now. new numbers indicate fewer people are even trying to make it in the bay. a new study reveals more people are ready to move or are seriously considering it. 46% more people are weighing the cost of moving out of the bay area compared to last year. according to moving company unigroup as reported by "the chronicle." other companies like u-haul reporting an increased bay area demand as rents have dropped up to 15% year over year in san francisco. speaking of people who have moved, prince harryes this morning for making a huge repayment on their renovations. they faced criticism for using

"friends" and "hamilton." both of those on loop at our house. i am losing my mind. >> what a combination. >> i know, right? >> i would love to show the whole video if we could. we have to get you traffic and then weather, kari, good lord. >> that's all we can say. i know i have a lot to talk about. let's start out with the fact we're making progress here and we have slightly cooler temperatures as you get ready to head out the door. this was better than yesterday. right now we're in the mid-60s in the south bay. yesterday at this time we're in the 70s. we're very close in livermore at 69 degrees with 59 in san francisco and then as we go into this afternoon it's still going to be hot. in some spots about ten degrees lower reaching 102 degrees in livermore, morgan hill, concord as well as ukiah. and in santa rosa the high today will reach 97 degrees.

in san francisco we're still in the 80s. that seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. let's talk about this red flag warning that we have in effect. it includes our bay area hills and in these areas we could see those high wind gusts along with low humidity. you need both of those things together to create the fire conditions that could also possibly if any fires do develop or the ones we currently have burning may become more erratic or we may see them spread rapidly. the relative humidity levels have to be 15% or less and we have to have frequent wind gusts at 25 miles per hour or more. this is a look at our wind speed forecast. it shows that in the north bay in spots like napa we could see those winds at about 35 miles per hour through this afternoon. and then it will gradually start to calm down. we are also seeing the winds coming in from the north which also dries out that air. and our relative humidity levels during the middle of the day

will be in the single digits. very dry conditions as well as the high winds with some hot temperatures. we're reaching into the upper 90s today. we just cooled down slightly by the end of the weekend to the upper 80s while san francisco will come out of those 80s and back into the 60s and 70s for the rest of the week. mike, what's the update on the traffic alert? kari, we don't have a lot of new updates from chp. they're very busy. look at the speed sensors right over my shoulder, show it to you full screen. the big red box talked about the crash west 24 and the last i heard the westbound bore, the left one, the middle one is blocked by the fire crew that has been helping the tow trucks trying to clear lanes there. i've seen speed sensors. see the orange stretch right before the exclamation point shows the traffic starting to move better. we see more traffic on miraga. expect that slow drive and the bay bridge toll plaza where the middle lanes are moving.

struggling amid the pandemic. it is likely to face opposition in the democratic-led house. congress has remained deadlocked on stimulus negotiations for weeks now. amazon is banning sales of foreign plants and seeds on its site after thousands of americans received mysterious shipments. most have been postmarked from china and mislabeled. some have been potentially harmful to u.s. agriculture. it's believed the seeds are part of a scam where vendors pay people to order products and write bogus reviews to spur sales. the u.s. ishi to try to identify the source. not that you can really travel internationally right now, but if you are looking to get your global entry approved this would be a good time to do it. allows bypass lines with no paperwork and reduced wait times. enrollment interviews were put on hold in march because of the pandemic, but it is recommended for people planning to travel

when international bans are lifted to try and get those appointments again now. let's turn to coronavirus and our coronavirus coverage. the recent outbreaks affecting bay area colleges. we have new numbers for you on this tuesday morning. uc berkeley has now confirmed at least 166 cases including 20 more over the past week. san jose state confirmed one new case so far this week. 42 overall. santa clara had one new case in the past two weeks. breaking news and new developments as we get word of more dramatic rescues from the creek fire burning in fresno county. more than a dozen people already airlifted to safety. we'll show you that important mission still ahead for the folks who are still rescuing people from those flames. and, plus, pg&e shutting off power to customers in the north

effort to prevent wildfires. live in one town that is feeling the impact. and here is a look outside right now where record breaking span of poor air quality days continues because of all of our fires that are still burning. the impact all that smoke and haze is having on other states as well. well, good morning. a very good tuesday morning to you. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez. we are looking forward to meteorologist kari hall's forecast because it is starting to trend downward. but we're not out of the woods yet. yeah, it's still going to be hot today, but we will make some progress. in some spots ten degrees lower than yesterday. we can't yet say cooler. as we look at the temperature trend for walnut creek still reaching into the 90s today by 1:00. we know that it's going to be another hot day with some highs over 100 degrees. san jose will reach 95.

up to 102 today in ukiah. we'll get a look at our microclimates and talk about the air quality coming up. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? well, kari, i thought it was going to say clear but a little bit better for the speed sensors. we still have the alert as we look at the maps. the big view shows no major problems except where i've circled. it's at the top of the screen. west 24 continues to be the worst drive through the caldecott tunnel. things started to move better over to the crash just outside the caldecott but i see the backup holding steady at st. stevens and we do not have the all clear from chp. you still have a backup here with the metering lights. back to you. >> thank you, mike. breaking news in fresno county, dramatic overnight rescues in the raging creek fire burned 135,000 acres but more importantly very scary for a lot

of people. bob redell joins us with the story of that rescue. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. last night we knew that 50 people were trapped inside the creek fire. nbc news has confirmed that 24 of those people have been rescued by the army national guard based out of fresno. i'm following a journalist who is tweeting that another 11 have been rescued from the creek fire. that would bring the total to 35 rescued, 15 people still trapped. you're looking at video that came into our newsroom of the first 13 people airlifted from china peak back to the airport in fresno. other people trapped in the vermilion valley resort and lake edison. both locations are within the sierra national forest. here is one evacuee. he tried to drive out with four friends. they had been camping. they could only get to china peak. >> you don't think that you will

go through something like that. >> reporter: sadly we know that one of the people trapped in the creek zone fire area has died of an apparent heart attack. so, again, 50 people trapped. we believe that all 35 have been rescued. what is a surprise is that overnight/early this morning the national guard was saying they weren't going to be able to do these rescue missions until after sunrise. tried last night but the smoke was too thick, conditions were too dangerous. the conditions improved overnight and so, again, they have flown three helicopters to four different locations and so far we're seeing success. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." just extraordinary courage there, bob. and speaking of heroes, crews from santa clara county are helping battle the creek fire, the department tweeting out these photos overnight of its

team on the scene. the department said its fire stations back here at home remain fully staffed and read ta county because of the dangerous weather kari has been talking about. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live in calistoga. cierra, our viewers are not going to see power outages exactly where you are. as you drove there you saw some dark pockets. >> reporter: correct. we did see some dark pockets. right now downtown calistoga not impacted by the power outage. we've been in communication with the power provider, and they said anyone who would be impacted by this shutoff it's been done. the lights on here will stay o here. but 172,000 customers were impacted. 23,000 of those in napa and sonoma county. the power provider says those

impacted would have received an email, a text or automated call about 48 hours before the shutoff was scheduled to start. the stronger winds are expected to last through wednesday morning. now what's next now that the power is off in some of those areas pg&e says once those winds calm, crews will inspect the de-energized lines and work to restore the power. the company says the goal is to have power restored within 12 daylight hours. once that weather event, in this case wind, have passed. some folks say they're prepped for the shutoffs. >> it's inconvenient. but it's also inconvenient to save other people's lives. >> reporter: 23,000 customers in the napa and sonoma counties are impacted by those shutoffs. in all 22 counties are experiencing those psps shutoffs. it's because of that inclement weather, the wind and the drier

conditions which are prime conditions for more cierra john "today in the bay." >> they did put out a warning so hopefully people are prepared. crews are making progress containing these three large wildfires that we've been talking about for weeks now. overnight the lnu fire flared up, though. new evacuations were ordered as part of the walbridge fire. containment numbers are looking good, all in the 90s. that doesn't mean the fire is out. it's controlled along the perimeter. check out this video from the santa cruz mountains. you see crews working to put out those hot spots that keep flaring up. we're adding all of this information, of course, to our website. the top story on the site is the planned power outages. you'll find the latest information including a way to see if your home may lose power. that's all at nbcbayarea.com.

kari, we hoped for some wind to blow smoke away but that would make it hard on the firefighters. let's get the latest on the forecast. yeah, and we do have a red flag warning. we'll see high wind gusts along with low humidity. critically low humidity and high fire conditions for today. as we look at our wind direction it's coming from the north, very dry, as well as those gusts in the north bay that have been about 25 to 30 miles an hour already this morning. and that's the reason why the national weather service put out this red flag warning for all of our bay area hills. that means the fires that are currently burning or any new ones sparked could spread very rapidly. so we do have to be very careful for today. and this continues into tomorrow morning. when we talk about red flag conditions, once again, we have simultaneously low relative humidity at 15% or less as well

as some high winds. so i'm monitoring this. we'll talk more about it coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for that traffic alert? kari, i have a concern as well. this is for highway 24 where we have the red sensors. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the backup has started to ease. we may see more traffic building in as it does look like more folks are getting through the caldecott tunnel. the middle lanes are moving pretty well. part of the reason is because of the backup for west 24. one source says it's clear but chp did not clear it and the backup continues to hold past st. stevens for west 24. so that will still be a problem for at least one of your bores if not all the lanes coming westbound to bore three. the rest of the bay good. back to you. 6:38 right now. exclusive new claims from president trump's former fixer. michael cohen now likening the president to a cult leader.

continues and hot temperatures continue for today. let's take a look at pleasant hill and how our morning shapes up. we'll be in the upper 60s as you head out the door. it quickly heats up and will be in the 90s by early in the afternoon. a look at our microclimates and talk about air quality in the forecast coming up. and look at the maps. everything looks great except for west 24. that is the trouble spot. coming out of walnut creek and heading over in to orinda and oakland you have to deal with the very slow caldecott tunnel. there's a crash. 6:42 and a story that has a lot of people talking this morning, that gender reveal party that firefighters say sparked a massive fire in yucaipa. authorities say surveillance camera captured the whole thing. it was held where there was long, dry grass. a smoke grenade of some sort. we don't know if it was pink or

blue, but it seems to have set the tr to put it out. it didn't work. they called 911. the family is said to be cooperating but could, members of the family, face criminal charges and may have to pay for all of the damage. now just south of there a fast-moving wildfire exploded in san diego county. the valley fire started over the week and quickly scorched over 17,000 acres, more than 30 structures destroyed, and it's just 3% contained. hundreds had to evacuate with short notice and wonder what's happened to their homes aallalth this woman does not need to wonder. >> we made it. the animals made it. i thought we were okay, but we lost the house. >> unfortunately, she ended up losing that house, she would find out later. cal fire says two people were injured in the fire but it's not known if they were the evacuees

or the firefighters. we're working to find that out and find out how serious the injuries are. turning to our coronavirus coverage for counties across california today is a big day. on tuesday color coded reopenings. some counties believe they may be on the verge of changing color and restrictions. sharon katsuda is live in downtown san jose where restaurant owners are hoping they can bring folks inside. it's still not going to look the way it used to. >> reporter: not really, kris. at least it's a little better. right now we're getting used to just eating out in the parking lots. business owners will have to wait to hear the official word from the health officials later today. marin and santa clara counties could get bumped today into a new, less restrict ed tier, fro purple to red, giving thousands of businesses more options and more openings. restaurants in marin county say

as a g married in a private fa friends next year. and they'd like to start a family soon, they say. >> i have seen them on youtube before. it's a remarkable story of togetherness. you certainly wouldn't want to have an outdoor wedding anytime soon, kari. yeah, it's been so hard for people just trying to plan a wedding or birthdays or anything at this point. if it's not the heat, it's the wildfires. if it's not the wildfires, it's the air quality. and we've had really poor air quality. i wanted to show you that shot in san francisco. we have the smoke overhead and saw it rolling over the bay. so it's really hard to see the sunrise this morning. that air quality will still be unhealthy for today for all of our microclimates. you definitely need to limit your time outside if not for the heat for the smoke we are going to see. let's go hour by hour and look at our temperature trend because

at lunch time we're already seeing those temperatures in the 90s. we are going to be a little bit lower compared to yesterday, but it's still going to be hot with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees in parts of the inland east bay as well as the far north bay. for the south county you can see morgan hill at 100 degrees at 3:00. and then going into this evening it still doesn't really cool off that much. we're still in the mid to upper 80s in the valleys. going into tonight it's going to be breezy, but our temperatures will come back to the 60s. speaking of breezy, that's the reason we have the high fire danger. we do need to be really careful today and no burning whatsoever. we are going to see those winds coming in from the north up to about 35 miles per hour in parts of the north bay. as you go up in elevation it's going to be even higher in terms of the wind speeds. we're watching out for the gusts for today, and our temperatures are, once again, reaching into the 90s. some mid-90s for tomorrow. and then it will feel better by

the end of the week with some upper 80s in the forecast. mike, how is it looking as you check the traffic alert? >> better for a lot of folks, kari. we'll look to the south bay, though, first. one car not better. it's stuck on the shoulder in san jose. north 101 coming toward our camera. you see the truck, the box truck. it's not causing a problem but it is there traveling north of 680. and the map shows you in that area there's a general slowing. it's light but still it's there as the commute builds. not bad in the south bay. the big problem with highway 24 it's still a slow drive here. all lanes have been cleared at the caldecott tunnel or just outside. both bores are cleared now. we should have good recovery. st. stevens all the way down past and through orinda and into oakland, there you go, that crash just cleared as we sneak. the rest of the sensors are moving nicely. a crash west 80 now through berkeley. right back to you. >> i love when things clear up

6:55 on your tuesday morning. a quick look at the stories we're following. the biggest dramatic rescue in fresno county overnight with that wildfire. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is tracking those developments overnight. what a story, bob. >> reporter: and a pleasant surprise. the army national guard out of fresno has rescued 35 of the 50 people who are trapped by the creek fire burning in the sierra national forest. the reason this is a surprise

overnight they made several attempts but it was too smoky and too dangerous. they didn't think they could get in until sunrise but were able to get in at china peak and the vermilion valley resort at lake edison. we believe another 11 rescued based on what i'm seeing from a journalist out of fresno. that puts the number at 35 leaving 15 behind. unfortunately we do know one person was trapped by the fire has died of an apparent heart attack. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." people in the north bay waking up in the dark this morning. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson live with details on today's power shutoffs, those psps that have started rolling out. >> reporter: yes, good morning. they have started rolling out and according to pg&e, we've spoken with them all morning, those rollouts are complete. if you were notified, it is done. right now we are in downtown calistoga. if you're wondering why the

lights are on here it's because a while ago there was a micro grid installed on the edge of town and that allowed as many as 600 customers including some of these business owners to keep their lights on. so now that the lights are off for some folks, what's next? crews with pg&e says when the event passes they're going to take a look at some of those de-energized lines to make sure they're not damaged and work to restore the power. the company says the goal is to have the power restored within 12 daylight hours once that weather event has passed. in all 22 counties in the service area -- the pg&e service area -- are without power. 23,000 here in napa and sonoma counties. we're live in downtown calistoga, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you, cierra. continuing our coronavirus coverage a look at new bay area cases reported since yesterday. the total number of confirmed cases is now approaching 90,000 with more than 1,200 deaths.

this will change, though, because some counties didn't report over the holiday. some students in marin county will go back to school. last week waivers approved for more than a dozen schools. these are all elementary schools. some private and some public. the schools will be required to follow their strict protection plans that they submitted during the waiver application process to ensure the safety of their students and teachers. let's get a last-minute look at your weather. >> please, go ahead. we're going to see those temperatures today still hot and we will have high winds today increasing our fire danger. as we continue to monitor that we have unhealthy air quality that will continue. it will be slightly cooler by the end of the week. san francisco will be back in the mid-80s. mike, what's the update for the

commute? lanes cleared. we talked quickly starting better through orinda. west 80 at university the crash in berkeley cleared from lanes as well. those are the good news aspects. the bad news folks at the bay bridge where it was looking lighter, those two avenues are now cleared of those crashes. this will start to fill in much more. looking at the low clouds. i want to be there. we got some disappointing news from marin county. not able to move forward with the reopenings. the state department of public health was hopeful businesses would be able to open a little bit more, but it will remain in purple not in the red. we haven't heard about santa clara county yet. those changes come on tuesday, so we will keep track of that. that will do it for us.
