is back. >> welcome to our special 3:00 p.m. edition of bay area news. the chiefs and texans kickoff at 35:30. >> spare the air alert extends through tomorrow. here is a look across the bay area. this is the view from all 20 of our live cameras. the eerie and orange color we saw yesterday, today a lot of smoky gray. the air quality is actually worse today. most of the haze caused by several near by wildfires and just like yesterday we are seeing ash falling like snow in many parts of the bay area. jeff is going to join us in a little bit. let's go to raj. >> this is today around noon. you see san francisco of the

gray there and parts of the east bay walnut creek there. let's show you the same camera 24 hours ago. that's where we experienced the orange-light glow, you can see the difference from all points of the bay area. let's get back today much brighter but still hazy and not much sun. our air quality is worse. scott budman is in san francisco for us with some answers. >> reporter: we see the difference there, it is hazy but it is the gray look that we had. good afternoon, raj, all the talk about our orange skies in san francisco, today what they can to avoid breathing it in. going outside today was still a sha shaky condition.

>> we are trying to have a vacation. >> reporter: because of all the smoke and haze. >> it has been a pretty good shock. >> reporter: they admit their staycation is kind of are expecting air quality to be worse than yesterday. >> reporter: most people in the city took the advise. >> stay in doors. have your air-conditioning to recirculate. >> reporter: waiting until things clear up. or bundle up with extra plastic. >> sometimes the weather is so nice and at some point we have to do our routine. >> reporter: yesterday if you may remember everybody comparing san francisco air to the surface the a's and giants have played of mars. today more accurate comparison is the surface of venus today. on the hazy sky.

last night over san francisco, scott budman, nbc bay area news. the sky over oracle park, the thanks scott. same color as the giant orange let's go to oakland right now. logo. let's show you the coliseum tonight the giants are in san where the a's just wrapped up diego. the nfl kicks off its season their game against the3-1. tonight right here. texans verses the chiefs. the neiners kickoff on sunday. let's go to robert handa, he joins us live at levi's with more. robert, the team is monitoring that air quality. >> reporter: yes, they really have levi's stadium is rightir quality is s essentially just as bad or worse. is it bad enough for teams not to play? the sky over levi's stadium at times a horrific looking orange color this week especially with the 49ers ready to open the season in three days against

arizona. the nfl which makes the ultimate decision on whether games can be played or not looks at readings on airnow.gov. the forecast shows it will be moderate again by sunday. >> it is not as healthy as it would be. if we didn't have the fires but we don't believe -- there is no concerns for us playing the game on sunday. >> reporter: the 49ers and the bay area have some experience of this. the niners called off practices in 2017 when the wildfires burned closer to the facility. same year fans wore masks at the cal football game and the school was criticized for going ahead with that game. the 49ers say that won't happen this time since the bay area air quality district provides information about air now.

>> people are people whether you are in the stands or in the field. we care about the safety of everybody that attends our games and our events. >> reporter: the 49ers say do not come to the game at the stadium on sunday. they'll welcome fans back when the pandemic is clear and the air is clear. robert handa, nbc bay area news. >> a go for this sunday but what about the future, we still have two mothre months of fire seaso. is this a week to week decision here? yeah, probably will be especially for a lot of the teams on the west coast. it could be bad on thursday, friday, but again if it clears up by sunday they'll be able to play so forecasting is as crucial as the current weather conditions. >> okay, robert.

as we know so much of this poor air quality coming from all the wildfires. you can see here on our satellite a thick layer of smoke, not just over our area but the majority of california as well as into oregon andwashi the pacific ocean. >> we have newyou out devastati wildfires season had been. more than 3 million acres have burned and 12 people have died and 4,000 structures destroyed. 28 fires are burning all across the state all the way down to san diego county. the heart of our fire season is still to come. >> yeah, one of the fearest one right now is the bear fire. the fire torched about 250,000 acres and it is just 23% contained. the bear fire is part of the

north complex fire closing in on the town of paradise where 85 people died in the campfire two years ago. it is a nightmare all over again for those who survived that horrible wildfire. jodi hernandez spoke with some of those survivors bracing for the worse. >> reporter: it was november 8th all over again for all of us. melissa said she woke morning f going into the town of paradise all over again. >> brought back a lot of angst. to the campfire in november of 2018. in fact she and her husband just submitted their rebuilding plans on tuesday. >> i was ecstaticed that we submitted our plans and the bear

fire broke out. >> i walked outside and started crying because it was so similar. not just the skies but the feel. it feels a lot of fear in the community. >> reporter: instead of panicking yesterday, she sprung into action. she has been delivering water and other needed supplies to evacuees. many in paradise left town to be safe. >> right now i think we are all apart of it. a lot are choosing to leave because the sky or the smell. >> reporter: the bay area skipped over paradise, it left a path of destruction in other parts of the county. cal fire say they'll help in any way they can. >> we got you. we'll get through it. >> reporter: jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> here is where we stand on the

wildfires in the bay area. the czu fire is now 84%. the lnu fire in the north bay is 94% contained. the scu in the south bay and east bay is 97% contained. and the woodward fire at marin county, a difficult fight ahead, that's only 24% contained. a live look at the stadium in kansas city. it is opening night of the nfl, the chiefs and texans. could we see some sort of nfl boycott like we saw with the nba quickly. when we welcome our west coast viewers, new audio of the preside president's interview with bob woodward. those stories and much more ahead on nbc "nightly news." get details on this state program.

a lot of kids are already asking about halloween and what will happen this year. the state chief officer says his own children are. . >> we are working hard to come up with guidance. dr. galy had the advantage to see what happened this week when halloween was cancelled. we contacted bay area county and they tell us they are still debating what guidelines to use. they could opt to discourage trick-or-treating or ban it together. the nfl season begins in about two hours from now. let's take a live look at the stadium in kansas city. unlike levi's stadium, there will be a limited amount of fans allowed inside tonight. you can see some players on the

field. about 20,000 fans will be there to watch the chiefs and texans. we don't know what to expect for the season. we know nbc's mike torico will be leading our season. >> going into the season, do you think anything can happen with boycott or standing out and i asked richard sherman in the bay area, very out spoken for the 49ers, can you see something happening for the nfl like that? >> you certainly can. it would not be out of the realm of possibility considering bay area fans know of protests and sports and call your attention to racial and injustice and social issues started with colin kaepernick four years ago. this is where it started. it would not be surprising if it continues here. >> this is such a heavy time for all of us in the country. had t

there are so much emotions in this country, can they turn it around and play football, seems trivial. >> it does. to have conversations with police and individuals put in a tough spot and how they have been treated and they shared their stories. it is hard to talk about that and how close to tackle. it should reconcile. wee to be reminded by covid-19 and sports are games. >> are we going to see you out or any of the team here at levi's stadium for several appearances on sunday night football. what's happening? >> i think our production folks have exactly that. what we do, 4:00 every sunday afternoon from our studio in connecticut where our nbc sports headquarters are and the games

will be called from the game's site. as of right now we get started but that could change during the season and just like anything can change. the fact that the game is starting is a big deal. >> it is a big deal. we are super excited now while the chiefs and texans get ready for kickoff. the niners continue to practice ahead of their sunday opener under the dark, gloomy sky. the niners and cardinals on sunday. fans are not allowed on any team's home game but that could change later in the season. the 49ers are trying to stay engaged. fans watching from home will hear artificial crowd noise. the team will honor the nationwide justice movement. there will be no tailgating in the parking lot and the streets around the stadium will be blocked for security reasons.

>> tailgating is so fun. so what about restaurants and bars? quite the set-up at the athletic club in oakland for the big reopening. the corner of remembwebster andm is actually closed. another hit here with all the smoke, sport bars and restaurants with all these great outdoor set ups say business is already way down this week and hopefully it will clear up before sunday when the game happens. a live look at our 20 hd traffic cameras from the bay area from this red orange globe to this mustard and yellow gray look. the air quality is worse today. jeff ranieri is joining us to ex plane all this. quite a change but the air quality is actually worse today. >> yes, still many different components of what's happening in the lower atmosphere. we had the smoke particles yesterday but a lot of it was

suspended just above the surface. that is what gave us the brilliant sharp orange color that made it so disoriented and strange. now with the fog moving in, it starts to mix in the air a li little bit. you see that really lines up with the current air quality and our live monitoring station right now. you can see the red dot showing some unhealthy hair right here. down in santa rosa and down to san jose, moderate air. we still have these four fires burning to the north and south which continues to -- no big wind tomorrow. temperatures stay down and that should help firefighters out. the nerxt 12 hours, we'll continue to fluctuate between healthy and moderate air quality. if you go outside, don't do any

exercising or stay out for extended time. if you have respiratory problem, you may need to shelter in place. i want to move ahead towards the thing that'll help to mix up the smoke. i am looking at two different systems ahead. the first one is on sunday. this is going to mainly move off towards the north. i think the wind associated with this could continue to help clear some of the smoke out once we hit saturday night and sunday. we can't guarantee right now we have blue skies but i think it will start to get things moving. we'll see a second system begin to move in on tuesday and wednesday and thursday and friday. that'll bring us some rain chances to northern california. now i don't see a big guarantee chance of rainfall for the bay area just yet, we have to look off towards the north near eureka and redding, maybe some trace amounts there. that helps the fire fighting effort, that'll take down the

smoke. we do have some good stuff to look forward to here. san francisco stays in the 60s with on and off again fall. in land valleys, no heat wave. temperatures will remain in the 80s and so far temperatures wise we are looking really good but if you have been outside like i was today, i try to leave blow some of the ad idea because as you know that ash is so fine, it gets kicked up and it is like someone taking a big ashtray and throwing it on you with those particles so fine. just got to be careful on all levels out there. >> it is annoying. i was playing basketball and every time you dribble the ball, the ash pops up. >> you guys have to water it down, hose it down. >> thanks jeff. >> still to come, taking a stand against a former colleague why sandford employee is speaking out against a researcher.
