look at kari's map you will know there's no place that's escaping this bad air quality and it's down at ground level where we're breathing it. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> very good points made there, kris. thanks so much. so it is a little deceptive because it feels like every once in a while you get a window of opportunity to go outside but, kari, should we really just stay in? absolutely, especially today. take a look at the numbers we're seeing this morning. the worst we've had so far this week because the winds have calmed down, the smoke is settling down and it's being also pulled down to the ground by a lot of fog we're seeing this morning. so we're seeing purple air. it's the really unhealthy air quality for everyone especially for san francisco, oakland, fairfield, san rafael, much of the north bay. it's also really bad in the east bay and even, right now, down to the south county where we usually at this point have had some pretty good air quality. so really concerning at this
4:36 am
point and something we'll be watching throughout the weekend. it does look like there will be something in the forecast that could change the wind and possibly improve our air quality. we'll talk more about that coming up a little bit later. now back to you, marcus. >> all right, thanks so much, kari. well, it is the day that changed our lives forever. today marks 19 years since the terror attacks on september 11th, 2001, and the three locations where thousands died are hallowed ground this is where ceremonies will start later this morning marking the time flight 11 hit the north tower of the world trade center. defense secretary mark espy and joint chiefs chair general mark millie will attend the memorial at the pentagon. and this year president trump will be at the flight 93 remembrance in pennsylvania. ceremonies will be slightly different than in the past years due to the pandemic.

4:47 am
there. kari, this has probably been one of the worst days for ground level air quality that we've had. it is. and we've mostly seen a lot of the smoke in the upper levels of the atmosphere and the reason we had the orange sky as the sun was shining through it. now it's just going to be hard to see. you mix that in with the fog and it makes it really unhealthy to deal with that. let's get a look at our temperature trend today. we know it's been much cooler because of all the thick smoke. it's kept our temperatures from really warming up. that will be the case again today. finally the models are catching up with it and we're going to see some upper 50s this morning and then it will gradually make it close to 70 degrees. that may be above what we see today. let's get a look at our forecast. we think in livermore we'll reach 68 degrees. mostly upper 60s around the bay area with some low to mid-60s near the coastline today.
4:48 am
as we look at what may change our weather pattern over the next few days, we've had high pressure to the north of us, and that's been giving us a light northerly wind. now that it's further away we're seeing the wind settle down and the smoke isn't really mixing out that much. what we need is a good strong system to approach and change our wind direction, also give us a little bit more of a breeze that will also bring in some higher humidity and it looks like we'll see that as we go into the latter part of the weekend and early next week. this storm system moving in will bring us much more of a westerly wind, some cooler temperatures and also high humidity. it may even bring in some rain across the pacific northwest and may clip far northern california. won't make it into the bay area, but we could see enough of that fog and deep marine layer to actually give us some drizzle for some of our coastal communities. it's looking good in the forecast. we have to make it through the weekend into early next week.
4:49 am
and our temperatures once again have been much cooler. we will gradually warm up once we see the shift in our wind direction and hopefully some improved air quality by early next week and our san francisco temperatures will stay in the 60s but a lot of fog there near the coast that will remain into at least next thursday. and as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking for the early morning drivers? kari, you mentioned the fog along the coast. that's what's over my shoulder, the yellow highlighting dominates a lot of the portion for our maps. take a look and show you what we're talking about. the yellow is highlighting where there's fog or lower visibility along highway 101 and 92 -- not 92, 580 across over to 92 as you're looking through castro valley and hayward. i've removed the level of detail so i can show you the slowing northbound 880. usually southbound but this morning the northbound side does slow through the construction around 29. it looks like it's getting ready to clear.
4:50 am
the speeds are improving but, marcus, on our maps the fog and then the golden gate bridge shows you another reason that and the bay bridge are getting warnings from chp. back to you. >> definitely see it there. breaking news to tell you about, an ominous sight in southern california. you can see right there the glowing flames, this is on the mountain range near pasadena. that's the bobcat fire suddenly exploding to nearly 24,000 acres. now this is burning near the angeles national forest. evacuation warnings are in place. that fire only 6% contained. in the meantime, marcus, the earth is also shaking overnight. this happened near owens lake. 4.0 earthquake hitting seven miles outside of keylar, california. one registered 3.5. no reports, however, of any damage or injuries. even though a judge recently ordered the census bureau to

wind down, it appears otherwise. a coalition is asking them to end operations in late october as opposed to this month over fears minority communities would not be counted. a judge last week agreed blocking wrapping the count early. but an internal email indicates some supervisors in california are being told to evaluate for the next phase of termination. a census bureau spokesperson denies there's any national directive. new details on the elizabeth holmes fraud case. a federal judge is giving the theran theranos, she's planning to challenge how the jury was picked during the pandemic. holmes is charged with a dozen counts of fraud over the palo alto blood testing startup. a judge is ordering a southern california mega church to stop indoor service.
