yesterday afternoon. san francisco's most iconic landmark shrouded in a thick haze through the smoke, ash, fog. that's supposed to be alcatraz. many local, state and national parks are closed this weekend to discourage people from going out and breathing in all this unhealthy air. despite all the air quality and covid dangers and concerns, some people still wanted to get out for their friday night. here's "today in the bay's" sergio quintana. >> reporter: for the third night in a row smoke is making for a groommy situation. street life is pretty sparse. most people i talked to are visiting. these men planned on visiting alcatraz. >> it got cancelled at 9:30 this morning right when we landed. >> the parable parks service cleared out tourists to keep people out of smoke. ♪ i got it all from you this district is usually buzzing

maybe shift the smoke in our direction and right now we're seeing calm winds which is why we're starting to see that smoke at a lower level, especially yesterday. we had, you know, the range above 200 in the air quality index, which is in the purple color. that's probably one of the worst air quality days that we've seen so far when it comes to the spare the air alert streak. current temperatures right now pretty cool at 56 degrees in san francisco. 50 degrees in san jose. 55 in palo alto. what's happening is, is all of this smoke is sort of stopping that solar insulation from heating us up. as far as our current temperatures, we're going to be in the 50s and 60s. ill talk more about that air quality and what to expect coming up in my full forecast at 7:45. >> we look forward to seeing you then. vianey, thanks so much. new this morning, a fire is under investigation in the heart of downtown san francisco. it ignited around 1:30 this morning at a warehouse with a wood working shop inside.

this is video from the citizen app. it happened on shipley street in san francisco's soma neighborhood between fourth and fifth. the warehouse shares walls with condoso contain the fire and keep it from spreading. it only took them about an hour. no injuries have been reported. all right, back to what vianey was talking about, our poor air quality. it is the worst it's been in weeks and that's saying something because it's been unhealthy for nearly one month. the aqi map shows red, meaning unhealthy air. there's a staggering amount of smoke covering the entire west coast, california, oregon, washington. this satellite image, you can see the smoke was taken yesterday afternoon. here locally san francisco's most iconic landmarks shrouded in thick haze. through the smoke is supposed to be alcatraz. you can barely make it out there. many local, state, national

parks are closed to discourage people from going out and breathing in this unhealthy air. and despite all the challenges, all the concerns with covid-19 and now the poor air quality some people just wanted to get out for a friday night. here's "today in the bay's" sergio quintana. >> reporter: for the third night in a row smoke is making for a gloomy situation so it's no surprise street life is pretty sparse. most of the people i talked with are visiting the city. kyle bresnahan and ryle are here from the central coast, they planned on touring alcatraz. >> it got cancelled at like 9:30 this morning, right when we landed. >> reporter: the national parks service closed down tourists to keep people out of the smoke. in the mission district it's usually buzzing with people but for the second night in a row, no closure to turn it into a bustling pedestrian mall. >> for the past two months it's blocked off, completely.

interchange is kind of the came progression of colors, not as intense, orange to yellow to gray, this is a week we might not soon forget. the 49ers are set to return to the gridiron tomorrow taking on the arizona cardinals at levi stadium, but if the aqi is above 200, the nfl could postpone or move the game. yesterday the team practiced in santa clara with the aqi around 194. by the way, this is a live look this morning and wow, it did not look good out there. doctors say an index above 200 is very unhealthy. conditions are unsafe for plafrplafrs players. the 49ers say they are optimistic the games will go on as scheduled but note that ultimately it's the nfl's decision. >> they couldn't practice with it being past 150. if it happens sunday, my understanding is if it gets to 2 hurngz that's when the nfl will start to discuss what to do with

the game. >> the fefl policy generally states that it, quote, will be prepared to relocate a game if there is above 200. so the game could be held tomorrow. it could also be moved to monday when the aqi is expected to drop. a decision will be made sometime today. right now, 29 major wildfires burning across california. since the beginning of 2020 fires have scorched more than 3 million acres in our state alone. and destroyed nearly 4,000 structures. 19 people have been killed. one of the state's biggest and deadliest fires continues to rage to our northeast. this is the north complex fire near oroville outside of chico. it has already killed ten people. the fire has burned more than 250,000 acres. it has destroyed 2,000 structures. mandatory evacuation orders are still in place for butte, plumas

and yuba counties. the fire has 23% containment. it seems like every week for months now we have a new problem, a new challenge, first we had the pandemic, then the economy, social unrest. fires, now air quality. it is all taking a psychological toll on us. and also our kids. a bay area child and family psychologist talked to us yesterday and says that we should talk to our kids. we should explain what's going on, show them the smoky skies, explain that this, too, eventually will pass. but that's why we're all staying indoors right now. being cooped up may affect both you and your kids. that's normal, they say. dr. sarah levoy shared tips with our own janelle wang on what to look out for and how to reset. >> you probably will see a lot of hyperactivity, maybe jumping on the furniture, running around. you're definitely going to see

some sibling rivalry, completely normal. you know, you may even see an increase in tantrums. definitely some insomnia because they're not getting as much movement or exercise so they're not sleeping as well. you know, and just be honest with your kids. you know, we're all feeling cooped up, we're all feeling stressed, hey, let's go, you know, have a dance party. we're all going to take a quiet time, 15 minutes, let's meet back. you know, trying to come up with ways to just do lots of little resets through the day so that you can just keep going. and definitely, you know, be patient and kind with yourself as a parent. >> that is really good advice. a big question dr. levoy gets is how much screen time kids already are on their computers a lot for school. their eye pads. dr. levoy says technology is fine. just use it differently. instead of just plopping your kids in front of the tv or ipad, things like touring museums and
