4:32 am
traffic alert? yes, kari, and continuing with an alert because i got this notification just about 1:30 this morning over in fremont. lower visibility given those conditions. 84 reports a car hit a power pole. the power pole is the issue right now. it is not an option right now. marcus, you have to go down 680 and use mission to get out of that sunol area or into it. new overnight, vallejo police are investigating a deadly shooting inside of a gas station store. an unidentified man died. now the woman claims to be the victim's cousin later showing up at the scene. she says the victim was a 30-year-old and had four children all under the age of 6.

4:34 am
so you can expect to see more coverage about that today. he will meet with cal fire and other responders there as that emergency service center. he's been criticized, though, up to this point for remaining relatively quiet about the latest round of wildfires burning here in california, many of them still active. his press secretary reminds critics trump did approve a disaster credit and will arrive fresh off an indoor campaign rally in nevada stoking concerns about coronavirus. now also today presidential nominee joe biden and his running mate will address the wildfires burning in our state and the ones devastating oregon at the same time. kamala harris speaking here with nbc bay area's raj mathai will visit the creek fire zone. that's near fresno. you might remember that's the ilies were trapped by the flames and had to be rescued by military helicopter. this is a look at some of the damage biden and trump will have
4:35 am
to address today. my husband was on assignment for nbc news, got this video of phoenix, oregon, one of the towns leveled by fire. it looks a lot like coffee park after the north bay firestorm. and as we well know many of those communities are still rebuilding, so the conversation will be about today and what's ahead for people who will need to help for a very long time. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all right, striking video there. thank you very much, kris. for some san francisco businesses, it felt like today would never arrive during this pandemic. many more closed businesses will be allowed to reopen. of course with a limited capacity like we have seen. so here is a quick look at the indoor changes that we're seeing. hair salons, barber shops, nail salons, gyms and massage services as well as hotels, churches. but one person inside at a time and outdoor family entertainment
4:36 am
like mini golf, batting cages and go carts. even more restrictions are easing in alameda county. it will begin permitting additional car-based gatherings such as movie showings or live musical and theatrical performances. typically we've seen a lot of graduation ceremonies and religious gatherings but now it's expanding under the new order. the number of cars allowed will increase from 200 to 400 and you'll be able to preorder food for pickup at the event. a huge drop-off in tolls mean possible layoffs. some 240 employees have been warned that about 30% of the labor force could be affected. that includes bridge workers, bus and ferry employees. again, this is just a notice, no layoffs have been made official. starting this morning another hopeful sign for the bay area commute. b.a.r.t. is making its biggest

4:38 am
paramedics gave the driver two doses of narcan. the car was towed away. that's when officers and the bridge crew began feeling the effects of possible exposure. chp says one officer who was in the car immediately felt ill and became incapacitated. that mill valley fire department came in. they decon tataminated the car treated everyone. they didn't find traces of fentanyl but other chemicals were found. the officer and bridge employees are all okay. very early on our monday morning but we dealt with being inside more due to the smoke. hopefully we'll see some clearing today, kari. it won't be today but the air quality is still bad. a look at this smoky scene we're seeing this morning over san jose and we are seeing those
4:39 am
numbers in the purple category right now for the south bay but the overall trend for today is for unhealthy air quality to continue so we've been watching those numbers fluctuate going up and down. a southerly wind allowing the smoke to settle near the surface. as we go into the next couple of days looks like there could be some changes. mike, you've been following that traffic alert. what's the update? we have two issues including that traffic alert on the eastern side of our map. as we look over to highway 84 that's what is not accessible between sunol and fremont, going through the area. there's a crash and a power pole has the lower hanging wires. that does cut off an important section. you have to go down to mission boulevard and 680.
4:40 am
that will also have folks speeding over livermore and pleasanton. near the walnut there's a crash affecting only the on ramp. i'm tracking that. back to you. on the hunt, next on "today in the bay," the reward being offered in the search for a man wanted in the shooting of two l.a. county sheriff's deputies and what we're learning about the moment leading up to a brutal attack. plus, the bay area tech giant now poised to become tiktok's u.s. technology partner. we'll talk about it when we return. 4:40.

and full-time roles. amazon says these jobs are not related to its annual holiday hiring. business has been booming. amazon recently reported record profits and revenues in its latest quarter. it already had to hire 175,000 new people earlier this year to keep up with demands. last week it said it had more than 30,000 corporate and tech jobs it still needed to fill. back over to you, marcus. a lot of jobs out there for folks who really need a new position so they should get on those sites and apply. >> absolutely. sounds like some good news this morning. thank you, bertha. 4:46. and it's not just the bay area. we're following breaking news in los angeles county. nexter who on "today in the bay" we'll talk about the all-new evacuation orders as a fast moving fire is fueled by overnight flames. plus, the damage many in san diego county are returning home to this morning.

possibly change for the end of the week. that means we have still several more days with unhealthy air quality and seems like it's been forever since we've seen the sun shine. this is a look at how it moves through the upper levels of the atmosphere. you can basically see it's covering the whole west coast with the fires burning in oregon and across california. we're seeing it moving across the world. as it settled in during the early hours when we have an inversion, basically air that's sinking, and we also have the marine layer where we have a lot of fog near the coastline. elsewhere it's still pretty bad, even if you don't have health problems. this will start to affect you. it is not the morning to go out for a walk as soon as that sun comes up. as we go into today we're still

looking at unhealthy air quality and temperatures held down in many spots because of the smoke. mid-70s in palo alto. low 70s in oakland. as we head to the east bay you may see filtered sunshine but temperatures in the upper 80s for this afternoon. we look at the wind direction and it's coming in from the south and this is still bringing in some humidity but then those winds at about 15 to 25 miles per hour will continue. it doesn't help mix out the smoke. as we look at our weather pattern down the road there will be some changes as we head to the end of the week, the storm system approaches and brings in a stronger westerly wind around that area of low pressure. by thursday and friday we could see some improvement. that means still for most of this week we are still dealing with a lot of smoke. our temperatures will actually go up a couple of degrees over the next few days. check out friday, upper 70s. it will heat up again for the
