6:09 am
>> it has been so unhealthy as we take a look at our numbers around the bay area this morning. we are seeing a lot of reds and even purples here especially in san francisco and a lot of smoke settling in. it does show some improvement as air shifts from the south as we go into the afternoon, the winds pick up. it still may be at a level that will trigger a spare the air alert day. so even though we are going to see some improvements it may still bother some people and we'll, of course, be watching out for that update from the bay area air quality management district. let's head over to you, mike, for an update on the commute. all right, kari. we'll start with the bay bridge toll plaza. that affects the largest number of drivers as we look at the toll plaza, the metering lights have been on since 5:30 and the backups there. it's still moving, though. you see visible movement, flashing lights not a concern

6:14 am
and you can do that because b.a.r.t. has more frequent trains starting today. over here, though, highway 84 no traffic flow because it's closed between sunol and fremont marking your alternate there with 680 and mission. coming off 580 travel threw dublin, take a live look at the volume with those headlights. and a good morning and a very happy monday to you. it's a very busy monday morning. a lot of deals made overnight. a huge deal made in silicon valley. nvidia said it will buy the british chip design company arm for $40 billion. arm licenses out the design of its chips to companies like apple. it's really the most important tech company in all of great britain. nvidia is a huge success story here in silicon valley. the second best stock performer on the fortune 500 in the past year.

improvement for the day and our because of the thick smoke especially during the early morning hours keeping our temperatures warming up very quickly. as we see our high temperatures today for the inland east bay we have some mid-80s. also some mid-80s through the north bay. oakland today reaching 73. and today in san jose 78 degrees. what we need is a big shift in our weather pattern. an onshore wind flow along with more fog and a brisk wind. we know that sometimes a brisk wind can be a bad thing because it can cause those fires that are currently burning to spread. this will also bring in some higher humidity, possibly some rain to the north. that's something we'll be watching as we head to the end of the week and how it affects our fires that are currently burning. hopefully we don't get any new ones. as we lock ok at our forecast a cooldown by the end of the week. it will warm up again in time for the weekend.
6:21 am
mike, how is it looking heading out the door this morning? kari, we still have one distinct problem. it's been there -- i double-checked the time -- it's been there since after 11:00 last night, so over seven hours now as we look at the map, the closure for highway 84 on the right side of the tri-valley. everything on the left side is just fine. the coast, the peninsula, the south bay, in fact. between sunol and fremont, the curvy section is closed because of power lines that were taken down after a power pole was hit last night at about 11:00 just after. you can use 680 to mission or use 84 coming through the area up until sunol if you don't have to get to palomares road. the toll plaza, even though the times are fine, when you're at the toll plaza itself you do have to wait. the lights have been on since 5:30. back over to you. >> thank you, mike. covid health emergency over? well, that's what leaders in one northern california county are

6:33 am
visiting the emergency operation center in sacramento. that's where cal fire is launching a lot of their big wildfire fighting aircraft to try to tamp down on some of the fires burning here in the west. the president has been criticized for not addressing the latest round of devastating wildfires burning in california in the time since they started. his press secretary reminds critics trump did approve a may skror d major disaster declaration. scott mcgrew is talking about that. the president had previously said that wildfire risk is related to forest management. democratic presidential nominee joe biden is expected to point to climate change as the overriding factor in wildfires today. his running mate, kamala harris, talking with raj mathai, will visit the creek fire zone in

fresno, the fire that trapped camp ers and required military rescue. it's just heartbreaking to see. my husband on assignment for nbc news got this video in phoenix, oregon, one of the towns just decimated by wildfire. it looks lick coffey park did. as we know here in the bay area so many people are still working to rebuild two years after that firestorm. so definitely both the president and democratic presidential hopeful joe biden will have to address not just the wildfires happening now but the ongoing support for people trying to rebuild years later. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people just losing everything. kris, thank you. 6:34 for you this morning and some hopeful news. the two l.a. county sheriff's

6:37 am
our temperatures have been cooler. that's been working in their favor. as we look at our temperatures throughout today we make it into the mid-70s and some spots into the mid-80s in parts of the east bay as well as the north bay. we'll talk more about our air quality and when we may see some improvement in the forecast coming up. mike, what's the update on the morning commute? well, we need to show the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights have been on since 5:30. it's slow because of the lights. we've constantly seen at least a little bit of movement over there getting into the toll m plaza off the maze. tougher to see some areas. we see the highlighted yellow on the maps as well and the spots i've shown slowing for concord, west highway 4. no big drama there. the big drama is in the tri-valley where we still have the closure since last night before midnight. this is highway 84 at palomares.
