and a good wednesday to you. >> reporter: police aren't thanks for joining us. saying a lot about the i'm marcus washington. investigation but we've seen them looking around for evidence >> and i'm laura garcia. we'll get to the morning commute with flashlights. with mike in just a moment. just to tell you where we are, first let's check in with kari. south eighth and reed street not >> before we get to that -- too far from san jose state. >> wait, look at this. we are right next door to one of it's the hurricane. >> absolutely. the fraternity houses near you can see the reporter campus. this was the scene around 10:00 standing in the midst of that when officers arrived in this hurricane. we're being told this is a neighborhood. they found five people shot, two hurricane 2 as it made landfall of them died here at the scene, early this morning. as you can see those winds are the three others are at an area strong, shaking the sign there. in the hospitals. the reporter standing there but you can see how strong the wind is as it's pushing that rain. people were gathered around some meteorologist kari hall has been sort of street side memorial. following all of this for us. a neighbor tells us there was a strong category storm heading another shooting in the area shortly before this one. in that area right now. >> this is not the type of over 95-mile-per-hour winds community we want to live in. is pretty high and they're this is not the example we want expecting a lot of rain as this to set for our kids. and, i mean, what can we really is a slow moving storm. do about it? we look at the cleanest air

relief of local businesses. >> people are willing to sit outside. >> just to be out and breathing, you know, is nice. >> the air quality levels are no longer unhealthy for everyone. it still can be a problem for those with breathing issues. "today in the bay's" bob redell will have more on this story ahead in our 5:00 hour. developing for you in butte county another death is now confirmed in the firestorm that tore through the community of berry creek near lake oroville. the total number of confirmed deaths to 15. authorities now believe two victims may have chosen not to evacuate because they got some bad information from an outdated u.s. forest service incident update on containment. all of that based on family members' accounts. but authorities also point out that mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for that area. as for the fire, it is now 25% contained. continuing our coronavirus

coverage now, a huge part of the east bay is set to loosen some restrictions today. contra costa county is allowing more businesses, personal care business, to reopen as long as they operate outdoors. expanded services include permanent makeup, facials, and waxing. also allowed outdoor card rooms and casinos. music, tv and film production may also resume. as expected berkeley leaders have approved $100 for ignoring mask orders. it's part of a new emergency ordinance approved last night adding muscle to the city's health rules. other bay area cities that have similar rules in place, the first you're cited and then you'll get a warning. people we spoke to are onboard with this. >> i think having a mask is important to wear, it's important for everyone's safety. >> it's not necessary. when i go in the store i have to respect them. on the streets i will not use a

mask. >> that ordinance still needs final approval but right now authorities must seek criminal prosecution to force people to wear a mask. all right. at the top of the newscast i mentioned our 30th spare the air day already. hopefully the clearing and cooling is on its way, too. yeah, we are going to have some cleaner air today. it looks like we're getting enough of a breeze to help mix out a lot of that smoke. and as we take a live look outside in san francisco this morning as you get ready to head out, no dense fog at this point. we will watch out for the possibility that we could see some fog rolling in for a couple of hours this morning, but looking at our winds, mostly a light wind at about five to six miles an hour. our temperatures today will be warming up for the inland areas. less smoke, warmer temperatures, but we will see some changes ahead. we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're still following that traffic alert? i am, kari. that's the one affecting the

santa rosa, we're going to have some much-improved air quality. the forecast coming up in a few minutes. good morning. i'm bertha coombs. wall street set to open higher after stocks posted another day of gains yesterday. that explained the positive sentiment as the company reported better than expected earnings helped by the surge in all those online orders we're doing during the pandemic. the dow erasing big early gains to close up just a few points, but the nasdaq rose more than 1% and tech stocks continue to make up ground from last week's sell-off. in focus today a report on retail sales, how much we're buying in store and online and the fed wraps up --

a forecast providing a road map for what it sees will be the economy, the jobs, inflation rates and whether that will happen over the next couple of years. meantime, at&t is considering offering wireless phone plans that are partially subsidized by ads as soon as next year. at&t ceo telling reuters he believes there's a number of customers given a choice who would take some ads in exchange for a lower monthly bills, say -- it's not the only service at&t plans to subsidize right now. it's said that it plans to launch an ad-supported tier of hbo max. and kohl's cutting 15% of its office workers to save money. sales have been hurt by the pandemic. kohl's isn't saying exactly how many people will lose their jobs. the layoffs will happen at its headquarters in wisconsin. it will be coming from offices

and breaking news for you this morning hurricane sally making landfall as a category 2 hurricane. now here is a live look. one of them you see there in pensacola and then the other in destin, both in florida. as you can see there it looks like what we saw at the top of the show, winds throughout the area. we'll have more coming up in about three minutes. here we are back in the bay area

getting started on the day. meteorologist kari hall with what we can expect from our weather. the one thing we've all been talking about the air quality. how is it looking for us or at least smelling for us today? it's going to be so much better. i'm so excited to be able to go out for a walk without worrying about the air quality and how bad it is for my kids. now we are going to see this continuing for today as we start out with a live look outside in san jose, even this shot looks clear. we haven't even made it to sunrise yet. we are going to start out with some clouds overhead and our temperatures in the low 60s this morning, but once that clers out we will see some sunshine today and it will be better to open up the windows and spend more time outside as we look at our winds that are now coming in from the south and southeast. as we go through the forecast it will pick up again today with our winds increasin15, close to.

once again tacss the bay area a seen a shift in the wind and so more of a westerly wind over the next couple of days. we're looking at temperatures today because of much less of the thick smoke. our temperatures are starting to warm up in the valleys. spots like concord will reach up to 88, and then we head to the north bay in spots like clear lake, 87 and in santa rosa reaching 82. in san francisco expect highs in the 60s again today. we need something else to clear out air quality. this storm system approaching the pacific northwest that will bring them some rain around seattle and parts of oregon. it's going to help cool us off. we'll see that happening over the next few days. upper 80s today. lower 80s tomorrow and then check out friday, 77 degrees. the inland areas.f our warmest

we'll track that air quality. mike, you've been tracking accidents around the bay area. yeah, but, kari, a couple fewer incidents to follow right now. over my shoulder we'll take a look. i've circled it on the peninsula, the crash 101 at embarcadero cleared from the on ramp. it was affecting the on ramp for a short period of time. no major injuries and no problem. you see the green on the peninsula 101 and 280. the east bay, slowing changing as far as where the slowing happens. it still is approaching 23rd. the crews are starting to move around. i don't know if they're going to clear just yet. you may be down to one lane as you approach 23rd southbound 880 shows that. over in the upper east shore freeway el cerrito circling the potrero onramp. there was, sadly, a deadly crash there that affected only the on ramp but the rest of the bay

area has moved smoothly with just the fog advisory for the golden gate bridge. chp issues that because of low visibility. you see what you can't see. back to you. thanks, mike. that breaking news for us this morning hurricane sally making landfall along the alabama/mississippi border as a category 2 storm. hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge and flash flooding in the forecast. "today in the bay's" jay gray is in mobile, alabama, with the latest. >> reporter: the storm making landfall, crossing the shoreline in gulf shores, alabama, which is just about 50, 60 miles to the south and east. i want to show you what sally is doing in mobile. you can see the rain continuing to fall here and the wind has really picked up. transformers blowing. tens of thousands without power. that number will climb. it's still a very slow-moving m.

the rain is going to be a big problem for not only mobile but areas really from louisiana through the florida panhandle. the national weather service has said that we are going to see historic and catastrophic flash flooding, water just continuing to pound this region. and, again, because the system is moving so slowly, these conditions will last for much of the day here. i'm jay gray. back to you. >> thank you, jay. a much different scene in southern california where we're covering the bobcat fire this morning. that raging fire is now threatening historic mt. wilson observatory. flames burned within 500 feet of it yesterday. the observatory is more than 115
