and a very good wednesday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia. a live picture for you. that's sam brock. this is hurricane sally. of course you can see storms are still brewing there in the area. we know it is a category 2 when it reached landfall this morning. causing a lot of flooding. you canin sam this morning. we'll continue to follow what's happening there, possible damage right now at 5:14 as we head and, of course, everything over to mountain view for a look that's happening with hurricane at our temperature trend this morning we're starting out with sally as we continue with the morning. some low 60s and some clouds, right now a look at what we can expect in the forecast here but we'll clear up and it's nice in the bay to see that we'll have comfortable temperatures and better air quality. we'll talk about what will help mix it out even more in the forecast coming up. south 17 heading to redwood

reopen even forcing the county to move back into a more restrictive purple tier. in the mean tim as colleges struggle to contain the outbreak across the county there the university of south florida is emerging as a success model with 50,000 students, less than half a percent have tested positive because of daily temperatures checks and they're doing limited in-person classes. and at colgate in upstate new york everyone was required to quarantine indoors, even the university president. >> i moved into the oldest dorm on campus. my sense is they thought it was worthwhile that we can be to go by doing this thing together. >> and it all works. the quarantine lasted for two weeks. first hair salons and churches and now california gyms are suing the state to fully reopen. the latest lawsuit claims the governor's covid restrictions are unfairly targeting fitness

street lights and the headlights if it's smoksmoky. fuzzy conditions in dublin. we will see it clerg out a little bit more as we go into today. as we look at our forecast it's going to heat up due to much less of that smoke, and we're also getting in a breezy wind. so we're looking at our temperatures in some of our inland spots in the upper 80s. livermore reaching 87. 89 today in antioch and 85 today in ukiah and san francisco expect those temperatures in the upper 60s while san jose will be in the upper 70s. as we look at what's been happening here, the approach of this incoming storm system for the pacific northwest will bring us some little bit more fog building near the coast. as we go into tomorrow as well as friday we're going to see more of a westerly wind as the storm system passes to the north, and we know we also have a lot of fires burning for our neighbors to the north as well. we've seen them in oregon as

well. as we go into the end of the week that storm system will bring them some rain. it will bring us some higher humidity as well as a breezy wind. it will come in off the ocean and help improve our air quality. some of those scattered showers will start to move in as we head towards thursday and friday and we're going to have a significant cooldown here in the bay area. so some really good news all around in the forecast as we look at upper 80s today for our inland areas. by friday we're in the upper 70s, only reaching 77 degrees. the weekend starts out really nice and comfortable but it will start to heat up again by the end of the weekend. i think by sunday it's possible as that high pressure moves in that smoke may settle in once again because we are most likely not going to have full containment on alm of the fires burning across the region. a slight warm-up by the end of the weekend here. it's nice to see the cool air

continues in the city as well as the coastline. let's head over to mike for an update on the commute. west 80 but on the east bay side i heard about something going on in san francisco. we'll talk about that as well. the bay bridge toll plaza free and clear at 5:21. the clock change there. as folks get into san francisco, chp reporting you may have some rocks or debris spilled onto the roadway and that could be a factor across from where i've circled. south of where i circled slowing because of overnight road crews in oakland. but you see the yellow and orange just off the red there. speeds are improving to 23rd. they may be clearing some of the equipment as we speak but it's scheduled to last until 6:00. we'll track that. that's the only thing going on there. the rest of the bay moves very smoothly. right back to you. thank you very much. wish things were smooth for people that are bracing for

hurricane sally. it's really strengthening as it approaches a category 2 storm along the gulf coast. we're going to take you there live. we have the latest overnight as that region is really hammered. these area. the thing about hurricane sally she's moving at a very slow pace. generally three miles per hour. but some areas have already gotten about 15 inches of rain and they're saying it could be catastrophic flooding in the area for miles. we're certainly continuing to watch what's going on there. we'll have a live report from jay gray in just moments. plus -- >> the cases will be handled differently and people will be held more accountable for those actions. >> breonna taylor's mother speaking out just one day after a settlement is reached in her daughter's death. part of the deal she says means the most to her. you're watching "today in the bay."

bay "today in the bay's" jay gr this is a very slow-moving storm? >> reporter: yes, laura, unfortunately we're still getting some pretty severe wind gusts here. we're going to see that for quite some time. a firsthand look at the conditions here along with the sheets of rain that just continue to fall. this wind that's been gusting lately is causing more problems. really across the entire region. in mobile bay it's pushing this water as well. causing white caps and pushing the water likely to areas not supposed to be. water is the primary issue with this storm. not only will you have storm surge in areas to the east and maybe nine feet or more but you have this rain here and as you follow the path of the storm

it's just going to continue to slowly creep across the shoreline and inland. unfortunately, as it lingers, that wind will continue. in pensacola, florida, they've already seen two feet of rainfall there. three feet of rain in some areas where the storm is going to linger including the mobile area where we're going to see some flooding in low-lying areas. power is already an issue for many across the region. more than 400,000 without electricity. unfortunately that number going to climb as well. so this is really just the opening stages of what's going to be a long and very difficult ride not only here in mobile but across the region. >> tough going, the anticipation has to be touch for people. jay gray, we'll check back in with you later.
