meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. kari, of course something good behind you there this morning, the air quality looking good. this is the best air quality we've had in about a month here. we're starting out with a lot of good air quality. we'll talk about what we're expecting as we continue the forecast coming up. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? kari, we may have issues for the tri-valley and that may ripple out. the live picture from our dublin camera. headlights in the middle of the screen heading west to the clock where it will continue to the dublin interchange and a crash right around hacienda just outside of our view. the map shows you the slower drive approaching the dublin interchange for west 580.

one lane may still be blocked but that may have more folks heading to pleasanton city streets, to stanley and 84 making their way through livermore. that's okay right now. still slow for 880 south to 23rd with the construction zone. looking much better across the bay bridge. that earlier crash has cleared off on the san francisco city streets. metering lights are still on there. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. are it's 6:02. back to that breaking news near downtown san jose this morning. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been live at the scene all morning. five people shot, two people killed. i understand you have new details for us, kris. >> reporter: yeah, we do have an update from san jose police. they say three people were also shot and survived will survive. they are in the hospital. officers are still here at the scene, though, trying to collect evidence. this is south eighth street and reed street not far from the san

jose state campus in the apartment complexes out here. there are some of the greek houses in the area. officers arrived around 10:00 and found five gunshot victims. as you mentioned two people did not survive. they died here at the scene. the others are doing better at a hospital this morning. people were gathered around what looked to be a street side memorial for someone who passed away when the shooting happened. another said there was another shooting before this one. >> i heard five shots go off. welcome back. a quick look at the top stories i heard screaming. we're following. whatever is actually fewer, for some of the folks we caught up with here in marin the reopening is welcome news but it also came as a bit of a surprise. >> i didn't even know we were allowed to eat inside today. it's a pleasant surprise. i think it's really a great way to help support small businesses and get back to things being back to normal. >> reporter: once a county moves into a new tier, it must remain there for 21 days before it can move into the next tier. the soonest would be october 6. with this excitement of reopening comes some concerns from health official. with freedom comes risk and that couldn't be any more true. they'll be keeping an eye on the percentage and the number of cases to ensure the movie

theaters and restaurants can remain open here in this county. things are getting to be more normal here in marin county. live in downtown mill valley, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> i think we've forgotten what normal was. new this morning santa cruz county starting the long process of rebuilding after the czu fires. county leaders approving a wide range of measures. this is to help people get back on their feet by fast tracking construction permits and providing temporary housing. more than 900 of those homes and 150 businesses were destroyed by the fires. a live look outside in oakland and walnut creek. today marks the 30th straight spare the air day, more than twice the old record. however, finally there are some signs of relief.

don't have the thick layer of smoke swawe'll have cooler air the forecast. how is it looking for the commute now, mike? kari, we have a tough spot in the tri-valley. things are changing in other spots. take a look out here and see the slower drive approaching west 580 and the dublin interchange. the off ramp may be affected by the crash and there may be a second just past that. slowing focused on your alternate from west 580. only one lane blocked. 84 is a good alternate if you're cutting through down to pleasanton and there may be another crash. 880 and that's all cleared the last few minutes. the nimitz back at speed. the backup lights continue. that crash has cleared. back to you.

good morning. happy wednesday to you. a local silicon valley company announced a deal to print 3d hockey helmet liners. the printing process is pretty cool. we sped this up. this is a company we've talked about before, it makes custom nike shoes. i talked with an executive and asked if the team was nervous the first time one of their helmets hit the ice literally. >> we take a huge amount of responsibility. there was comfort in a tremendous amount of testing on this product. it has to be through third-party validation to validate the tests we have done are accurate and true. we did spend a lot of time, i'm not going to lie to you and tell you i wasn't nervous watching the first game as a player and

girl turns 15. typically it's a pretty big deal including a church service. but 2020, none of that. so as you're watching the chicago family they made sure the day was very special for their daughter. it included a car parade and a reception according to all the city rules, they observed there. temperature checks and masks required as well. mom says it's very important to keep everyone safe. how are you celebrating maybe your daughter's quintinara. >> it's always a big event. big dresses, too. today would be a better day than we've seen in the past.

we are seeing much improved air quality. a look at the upper air smoke we've seen clearing away from the coastline and the bay area seeing much improved air quality. we are still looking at some thick smoke there. i just retweeted a meteorologist in washington, d.c., who are taking pictures of therom our w here across california. as we look at our air quality it's been so nice to get some improvements here. this is our 30th spare the air alert day. we're looking at a shift in our winds. our winds are come from the south and will increase throughout the day. more of a westerly wind coming off the coast.

we are looking at another improvement as we go into the weekend, the storm system moving into the pacific northwest will bring in some rain for them and some westerly winds for us and it looks pretty good. at least a cooldown, too. we are tracking the rain for spots like eugene and seattle as they get ready for those showers that will be moving in by friday and the week. expecting quite a bit of wet weather which they so desperately need because of the fires burning in those areas. as we look at our forecast a nice cooldown by the end of the week. we're all making plans to finally get outside and enjoy some fresh air and some sunshine along with some cooler temperatures. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking for the commute through dublin. the tri-valley is a slower drive. there may be a ripple effect for west 580.

take a look at the interchange around the hacienda off ramp. we know the slow lane is still blocked. the backup back to el chara. speeds are improving for the short section of slowing heading through the area. it's still slow so 84 is a good cutthrough. a crash on 680 doesn't look like it's been a problem as far as speeds go. another crash in hayward does bog you down right around the interchange. the other commute shows an easy drive. middle lanes are moving better. back to you. back to the gulf coast, what to expect.

destin, florida, this morning. hurricane-force winds in the area, this life-threatening storm surge. a lot of flash flooding in the forecast. take a look at this, this is in pensacola, florida, where you can see flooding already happening in that area as the storm slowly moves through. nbc bay area "today in the bay's" jay gray in mobile, alabama, with the latest. jay? >> reporter: marcus and laura, thankfully the storm just continues to inch inland, we are starting at this point to feel a bit of the eye. we're getting a bit of a break. it's not over by any means and i want you to take a look at the conditions right now. the rain has been coming down in sheets. you can see the winds whipping around -- you look at the trees and the poles shaking. you move down to the area of mobile bay and we're elevated

"today in the bay" continues right now. it's really nice to start off with some good news, some clearing air. good morning to you and thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike is keeping up with the commute. kari hall is monitoring the air quaul. it's something to smile about. it is. we've also been watching something not so happy. hurricane sally making landfall near mississippi, gulf shores, mississippi, as it continues to move through. i believe this video was in pensacola, florida. you can see how much rain they've seen and some of those measurements over two feet of rain so it's really heavy rainfall we've seen around those

areas and they're expecting some catastrophic flooding as the storm system slowly moves forward speed of 3 miles per hour. so, unfortunately, they're going to be dealing with this for quite a while as we look at the storm as it continues to move across alabama, florida, georgia, some of the rain bands will continue. it is a category 1 hurricane. it made landfall as a category 2. it's weakened slightly. that's something we'll be watching for the gulf states the next couple of days. we're excited to see cleaner air and, mike, as you head to work this morning, you can roll those windows down. yeah, get a little breeze if you're able to go at speed. a couple areas you can't, kari, we'll show you the big map and most of your commute looks great, some fog rolls in where the highlighting is yellow. over on the east bay the concern isund 880. we now have your three right lanes blocked as you head southbound just past 92 around

tennison. major impact out of hayward and san leandro. recovery to pleasanton and the dublin interchange, still slow around hacienda. there may be yet another crash moving to the short that ties you up to the dublin interchange. laura? thank you very much, mike. we are following some breaking news. deadly violence overnight in san jose. five people shot, two killed. bay by's kris sanchez joins us live at the scene. this is not too far from san jose state's campus, kris. >> reporter: no, and it's not too far from downtown either. we just got an update from police. they say they are told the three people who were also shotvived t the hospital this morning but they are still here on the scene. you can see the officers behind me, the crime scene investigation unit out here, south eighth and reed street. the scene around 10:00 last

night was pretty chaotic. officers arrived in the neighborhood to find the five people shot, two of those people did die here at the scene. we are waiting for the coroner to respond here this morning. one witness tells us people were gathered around what seemed to be a street side memorial when the shooting happened. another neighbor told us there was another shooting in the area shortly before this one. >> it sucks because this is our neighborhood. this is not the type of community we want to live in. this is not the example we want to set for our kids and, i mean, what can we really do about it? deal with it. >> reporter: sjpd has not confirmed the shooting. this stretch remains closed. reed remains closed while officers investigate and wait for the coroner.

friends and family members have arrived. how devastating violence can be for the people left behind. san jose police say they will get us an update later on this morning. we will keep you updated on that in our midday news. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. as the reward grows to find the gunman who opened fire on two l.a. county deputies investigators are intensifying the manhunt. a go fund me effort has raised more than $300,000 for the deputies. the reward to find the suspect in this is $200,000 now. it comes as the city manager of l.a. county linwood is now instagraming a response for the photo of malcolm x saying chickens come home to roost. in a statement it reads in part communities like compton where the shooting took place have been plagued by deputy gangs that inflict fear and violence,

end quote. leaders posted those opinions do not reflect the opinion of the city nor counci developing in butte county another death is now confirmed in the firestorm that tore through the community near lake oroville. that brings the total number of confirmed deaths there to 15. authorities now believe two victims may have chosen not to evacuate because they got bad information from an outdated u.s. forest service incident update on containment. mandatory evacuation orders have been ordered for the area. a live look in dublin right now. finally there's a chance we can breathe cleaner air. the extreme poor air quality is at long last improving. the bay area in the midst of a

30th straight spare the air day. >> bob redell is live in brentwood. a lot of people need a breath of fresh air out there, bob. >> reporter: yes, and hopefully it stays this way. it depends on the wildfires. if there are new wildfires or the current ones flare up again we could see conditions deteriorate. right now there's a weather system that's offshore that is improving, the best air quality we've seen in weeks. moderate to good air quality throughout the bay area. now that san jose state university will be reopening its campus this morning. this is not the case up north in seattle. that's where the giants were supposed to play the mariners. the air quality index over 240

considered to be very unhealthy. they'll play today and tomorrow. and here was the scene last night in san francisco. a number of people dining outdoors after weeks of bad air quality. a line of drivers waiting to get their cars washed and cleansed of all the ash. >> it's not good for the paint or the finish. not good for our lungs. i wanted to get it cleaned up. >> reporter: and, again, today is another spare the air day. the 30th in a row, another record. reporting live here in brentwood, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, bob. let's head up north to portland. we want to take you there with live pictures we have right now. the air quality there is still pretty bad.

right now being called the worst in the world. the good news is the weather could be changing for them as well. we will add for us as well. the jet stream headed our way, kari? an approaching storm system that will bring in rain for the pacific northwest and will help improve our air quality as well. for them they're looking at rain which is much needed at this point. we're going to start to see the change in wind direction as we head to tomorrow and then by friday we could see the rain falling in those areas. so really good news. hopefully more containment on the fires as well as we are waking up to some of the best air quality we've had in at least 30 days. we're waking up to looking at heading outside and enjoying more time outdoors. also with some comfortable temperatures. we'll take a look at our microclimates coming up and talk about how that storm system affects our weather that's

coming up. how is it looking getting out the door, mike? kari, in many spots it's your typical lighter commute we've had for months. others we have tough drives. a number of spots with a tougher drive on our maps, we're sorting them out. the peninsula south bay just fine. 880 jammed up in san leandro and down to tennison. the bottom of that red stretch, in the middle we have another crash that might be blocking a couple of lanes. three vehicles involved, i'm told. no major injuries. recovery to the dublin interchange but in the backup there may be another crash clearing to the shoulder between there and isabel. more slowing for 84 as folks try to avoid the backup through livermore and pleasanton. backup at the bay bridge, an earlier incident did clear from the toll plaza. metering lights are still on. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:40 right now. back to school for in-person classes.

the soonest marin county could move on would be october 6th, this under the state's new system. but with all of the excitement of some of those businesses reopen and getting back to resuming a sense of normalcy are some concerns about safety. we had a chance to speak with the marin county health officer. he said with that freedom comes risk. if you're venturing out, he said his office will also keep a close eye on those numbers and those cases to make sure those businesses are still safe to open. we're div in downtown mill valley. charter and private schools may be ready to reopen fully according to "the examiner" which reports at least 12 schools are now in the final stages of obtaining waivers for in-person classes. in the meantime santa rosa school leaders are scheduled to hold a special meeting today.

"the press democrat" reports they will recommend keeping campuses closed through at least the end of this year. to decision 2020 joe biden is in florida today. >> and president trump is defending his record on fighting the pandemic. scott mcgrew has the latest. good morning to you. florida has been a tossup state in so many elections. think of bush and gore. it will be with trump and biden running neck and neck. president trump was on abc participating in a town hall hosted by george stephanopoulos, self-declared undecided vetters asked the president about his record on coronavirus. the president says he, quote, upplayed the virus despite talks with bob woodward about downplaying it and speculated a vaccine was just around the corner. >> the previous administration would have taken perhaps years to have a vaccine because of the

fda and all the approvals and we're within weeks, it could be three weeks, four weeks. we think we have johnson and johnson, pfipfizer and other companies are close. >> he has consistently said three weeks from now he thinks there will be a vaccine so we will return to that issue three weeks from now. michael caputo has apologized and said he may need to put himself on medical leave. caputo has been accused of manipulating government data to make the white house's handling of the pandemic look better than it is. and finally a church in delaware has raised an objection over an ad for donald trump that it says implayed its clergy and congregation are thugs. the bethel ame church says it wants an apology and the trump campaign to stop running the ad.

koalas. also from the animal file, the case of monkeying around. a man says he discovered this video you see here and photos on his phone seemingly taken by that monkey. this is while the phone was missing. it appears it put it in the mouth as you see the red. the man late are found his phone in the back garden. he says the discovery made him choke from laughter. look at that. what is this? why can't i eat it? >> no kidding. it's not a banana. >> that monkey using the camera better than some of my older relatives. the big story we're talking about not just weather here but meteorologist kari hall is monitoring that hurricane that made landfall overnight. kari, how are things looking? we are still seeing this

storm moving very slowly. hurricane sally made landfall as a category 2 earlier this morning and it is just barely making its way. i think we can walk faster than this storm is moving right now and it's just dumping heavy rain. that will cause potentially catastrophic flooding. we'll continue to watch that as well as the six or seven other storms they've been watching out in the atlantic from paulette to teddy to vicky and now one more name on the list. we're midway through hurricane season for the atlantic basin and we've already used up the names. what we're seeing here, fresh air. we can get outside and breathe today. it's nice to open up the windows as we're starting to see the smoke mix out here. still thick over the sierra and traveling across the country. in d.c. they're waking up to a smoky sunrise.

nice to see the green sensors here. we another kick of westerly winds and we're going to get this as the storm system moves across the pacific northwest. that's going to also bring them some rain and us some cleaner air for at least a little while as well as some cooler temperatures. our high temperatures will go from the upper 80s inland today to the low 80s tomorrow and then some upper 70s on friday. saturday is also looking nice. it will start to warm up on sunday and that may be also when we see our air quality going back down. so we'll be watching that. how is it looking for the morning commute right now, mike? kari, the tri-valley and east bay tough. out to the maps, west 580 approaching hacienda toward the dublin interchange. still jammed up, one lane blocked and it may be until after 7:00. 10 to 15 minutes at least until they get atow truck out to pleasanton.
