and i'm marcus washington. mike getting us through the friday commute. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the forecast. looking good? it's been all about the air quality and still looking good for our microclimates today. if you do have breathing problems it may start to bother you in parts of the east bay and south bay. numbers just over the threshold. we'll talk about what's ahead in the weekend forecast coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute? we had the earlier traffic break and that made things look completely barren for incline and to the maze itself. that's the aftereffects of the earlier break. the rest of the bay showed a smooth drive. no major problems and that's great for a friday. back to you. >> thank you, mike. the white house just

announcing plans to stop new downloads or upgrades of tiktok and wechat starting sunday. the ban comes as president trump was expected to announce whether the government would approve a deal for oracle to buy tiktok. if that happens the new download ban will not move forward for tiktok. the first time in a month bay area skies are clear. people don't have to worry about the air quality that much and just in time for the week. breathe easy with your mask because crowding concerns still very real out there. >> that's right. you still have to play it safe. let's check in with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in downtown campbell with some advice on that. kris? >> reporter: yeah, we expect downtown campbell and our other downtown areas will be very busy as people try to get outside and enjoy normal. people spilled into their local parks and beaches with their

bikes and their kids and dogs. a 30-day stretch of unhealthy air taking a toll from los gatos up to san francisco. >> she is so frustrated at not being able to go out, not even into the garden. that's hard for the little ones. >> i saw blue skies and that got me excited. it's kind of special tonight because tonight and tomorrow we have games that were not on schedule. >> reporter: those games are done but the giants and mariners have to play the unscheduled games at oracle park because of hazardous smoke. today's a's game will be under blue skies. yosemite closed indefinitely because the air is so bad it doesn't register on the air quality scale. tahoe will have that, too. bay area restaurants could get a boost now people can sit outside without breathing that air and getting covered in ash. covid is still spreading in the community. make sure you keep your social distance and if you can't, make

"today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us from washington. they are heading to the same state later today. >> reporter: right. they'll both be in minnesota, which is a state with ten electoral votes up for grabs and polls are all over the place with biden leading in most of those polls and a love of discussion on the campaign trail about the administration's coronavirus response. thousands of trump supporterson. >> it's extremely dangerous.

>> reporter: the positivity rate for covid cases in wisconsin just hit a record high. >> we will deliver a safe and effective vaccine before the end of the year. >> reporter: the three drug makers working on the vaccine expect trial results this year, but a final analysis next spring. >> this president should step down. >> reporter: joe biden promising a crackdown if elected. >> in a federal building you must wear a mask, and we could have a fine. >> reporter: biden picked up an endorsement from olivia troy, former adviser to mike pence, now blasting the coronavirus response. >> it was shock to go see the president saying that the virus was a hoax, saying that everything is okay when we know that it's not. >> i have no idea who she is. she doesn't know me. it's just another person that leaves. >> reporter: the white house spokesperson tweeting an earlier letter from troy praising the administration. tracie potts, nbc news.

on the coronavirus front, the number of deaths is on the rise. more lives were lost this week than last. in the bay area, alameda county recording half of all deaths so far this month. to top it off as well, flu season is here. health experts have worried about the viruses colliding and making everything a lot more confusing. cough, fever, headache are all symptoms of the flu and covid-19. the flu season will be confusing for everyone. >> sorting out the symptoms of covid-19 and influenza can be problematic. that's where molecular testing can play a big role. >> testing will play a big role in calming some of those fears. experts recommend you get teste kind just to be sure and it's important to get a flu shot to

keep yourself healthy. santa clara county is making it convenient by offering free flu shots this saturday at the county fair grounds from 9:00 to 4:00 on tully road. thanks to a lower case rate sonoma county schools can now apply for waivers allowing for in-class learning. right now only elementary schools can apply for the waivers, and the county superintendent is advising schools to make sure they have that comprehensive plan in place especially so in light of the recent outbreak there affecting daycare centers. county's overall case rate is a little under 200 per 100,000 residents. that is the threshold allowing for those waivers. a live look for you right now in downtown san jose. the skies are all clear for you in the bay area with a nice weekend in store. we've heard kris talk about that a little bit ago. now a live look for you in las vegas. that's nice. looks good out there. you can see raiders stadium where the raiders open monday

night. if you were planning to head there, guess what, there's a smoke advisory in place due to those socal fires. make sure you stay local if you can. but, kari, i nose that's the thing we're seeing the fires really affecting across the country right now. the clearing has been localized. it shows the upper level pollution and where we have the blue showing the good air quality and the white where that smoke is drifting. we know smoke has been traveling across the country. we're seeing that in a lot of areas, waking up to some very smoky sun rises and sunsets and we'll see that continuing. let's talk about our air quality because the wind direction and the wind speed makes a huge difference. and with the westerly wind it brings in ocean air and helps clear it out. then as we go into the weekend a northerly wind will bring that smoke back. we'll talk about that in the forecast. let's head over to mike for an update now on the commute.

of a tropical system that will give us a beautiful sunrise. we're going to see cooler temperatures today. we'll talk about that and smoke possibly returning this weekend, coming up in the forecast. and this backup, unusually heavy for this time on a friday. try to remove a vehicle from one of those lanes. over at the bay bridge things are considerably lighter starting to build a bit. comparison to the richmond-san rafael bridge. 580 coming up. well, good morning and a very happy friday to you as well. the commerce department a short time ago announced it's g to block the chinese apps wechat and tiktok, block the downloads of them, as of sunday. this comes as the white house pushes bytedance to sell to an american company. sunday was the deadline set by

the white house quite some time ago and it's coming. wechat is made by a separate company. to be cs still legal to use the you can download them as of now. as of november 12th they will probably not work in the united states. now the justice department, that's the commerce department that made this ruling, the justice department seems to have been caught off guard by the inclusion of wechat because the doj just filed this in northern california yesterday a document that says we can provide assurances that the secretary of commerce does not intend to take actions that would target persons or groups whose only connection with wechat is their use or downloading of the app to convey personal or business information between users. so there seems to be some confusion this morning in washington as to what is going on and we have a lot of phone calls in to try to clear it up. other news, it has been a

historic week for ipos. unity software out of the bay area and they make gaming software. over the past two days we've seen sumo logic in redwood city, jay frog, snowflake all go public. snowflake was a blockbuster. sumo logic opened the nasdaq from its bay area offices on thursday. that stock ended up about 22% higher than its ipo price. i spoke to the company ceo right after that first trade crossed the tape. >> i didn't sleep much last night because i've been waiting for this day. i've been waiting for this day to celebrate for everyone at sumo and all of our families and friends and customers, and so i started my day about 2:00 a.m. and i went to bed around midnight. i envisioned many times laying there what today would be like. and i had trust in the team. the team to deliver and execute and they did. i had the joy and privilege and

see the country. the airline says tickets sold out in just ten minutes and the flight will take off next month. i don't know if i would want to do that. i can't even stand a road trip past four hours. i get a little squirrely. >> maybe if you get the miles you need. i don't know. is it going to fly that low? >> put the kids in the car seat used to put them to sleep if we got desperate and would drive around in the car. >> all right. so many questions with that one. 6:17 this morning. questions about the weather, don't go anywhere. just ask kari hall. she knows it all. kari? g up for us on this friday morning? let's talk about what's going on. we've seen a couple storm systems coming in and are tracking this rain moving in from the north and some rain pushing up from the south. these are the remnants of a

tropical system moving over the pacific. for us it's bringing in a beautiful sunrise. we had a nice sunset yesterday. we are feeling that humidity a little bit. the rain staying away from us but it will be nice to see that happening over the sierra. and then as we look at the clouds moving in from the north this will help bring in cooler temperatures. so let's take it hour by hour as you make plans for the day. look at your microclimate in your city. low 70s. in the south bay we also have low 70s as you go up to concord. the north bay, novato, about 72 degrees at nice time. a nice day to have a friday lunch outside. also dinner time will be comfortable because we'll see the highs only make it into the low 80s for a few spots. most of us will stay in the 70s today. we have some 60s along the coast and in san francisco. for tonight fog starts to roll back in and our temperatures cool back into the upper 50s and

low 60s. a lot of changes ahead because we are seeing a strong westerly wind as the storm system passes. as that moves away high pressure moving in and temperatures will get a big boost starting on sunday. with high fresh europe thatpres to sink we may see our air quality going back downhill for people who have breathing problems will start to notice that across our microclimates for tomorrow and then that continues into the weekend. we'll be watching the air quality as our temperatures go up and down. we're still looking at a lot of changes over the next few days. it will cool down by early next week. mike, you've been watching thec issues, it seems. yes, but it's major if it's a friday and you're not expecting any problems. the richmond to san rafael bridge where traffic westbound really held up as they tried to clear a crash or a disabled vehicle from middle lanes around the toll plaza. things were moving great up until about 15 seconds ago.

for a beautiful sunrise. we always had them when we had tropical moisture nearby. we're seeing the clouds as well as some nice, mild temperatures. a cooler afternoon so we'll take a look at our microclimates coming up. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? kari, it's not friday at on. in the east bay this is the problem. the toll plaza shows you the live camera and the big backup just past the toll plaza. one of two lanes blocked heading across the bridge. a disabled vehicle has been there for half an hour now. that is the problem. the map shows you the big backup there over to san rafael. everything else looking pretty good. a weird pattern just showed up so i'll double-check on that and show you in a couple of minutes. a smooth drive for these >> thank you, mike. breaking news right now the trump administration just announcing it plans to stop new downloads or upgrades of tiktok and wechat starting sunday.

that ban comes as president trump was expected to announce whether or not the government would approve a deal for oracle to buy tiktok. if that happens the new download ban will move move forward at least for tiktok. firefighters still at the scene of a fire in a south bay tire shop. it started at about 1:00 a.m. on monterey road in san jose. you can see what kind of fire they were dealing with there. flames shooting skyward. it took firefighters about an hour to knock it down and no one was injured. developing for you right now some sad news within the last hour in southern california where a firefighter has died battling the el dorado fire. this is the same fire that started from a gender reveal party stunt. the u.s. forest service says the unidentified firefighter died yesterday in san bernardino natural forest. and merced firefighters are sharing an intense new look at the first hours of the creek foyer. that's the fire that left so

many hikers trapped. that fire now 20% contained. amazon is on a roll and that means hundreds of new jobs for contra costa county. online sales thriving in this economy and that means the online retailer is getting even bigger. >> "today in the bay's" thom jensen is live for us in contra costa county in oakley where new amazon employees could soon be working. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. amazon announcing it will hire 100,000 new employees in the united states, already 800,000 employees in the one of the biggest employers. and hundreds of them will work in one of the buildings. i'm not sure if it's this building or another one but this is a huge economic area. 2 million square foot development. the city of oakley announcing on

facebook that amazon will be its first tenant here. this has been in the making for a while, this development, after dow chemical pulled out 20 years ago. amazon already employs thousands across the bay area. now it will add 4,000 new jobs as part of the massive 100,000 new employee hiring nationwide. in northern california hundreds of workers here in the coming months in oakley, another 1,800 and others scattered across northern california. many of the job postings include a $500 signing bonus. some of those here, looking at the new job postings this morning, some of them $1,000 signing bonuses down in half moon bay, for instance. there is a ribbon cutting and a formal announcement planned for

this site here in oakley on october 7th. thom jensen, "today in the bay." happening today amidst the pandemic a new trader joe's is opening in milpitas. it should be up and running some time this morning. happening today, grab the popcorn and you can finally head to the movies. if you're lucky enough to be in marin county can you finally head in to see a movie indoors. a live look this morning for you at cinemark century theaters. i don't even know what they're showing. people are just excited to go. marin county moving fhe purple tier restrictive. if youla to catch a flick you'll still have to wear a mask throughout the entire movie but you can probably take it off to sip a drink, have popcorn.

you will have to social distance. theaters can also only operate at 25% capacity or 100 people, whatever is fewer. cinemark says they've implemented a lot more safety procedures. >> we are sanitizing all hard surfaces every 30 minutes, and we are also sanitizing the auditorium before every show time and again every morning. >> businesses like nail salons, places of worship can reopen indoors with similar restrictions. last week movie theters in napa county also reopened. from the north bay to the east bay folks are singing from the hills. ♪ they can finally see into the sky. clear for you that weekend. if you're thinking about heading to l.a., you might want to think again. they're dealing with smoky conditions today and probably over the weekend. tahoe, las vegas and portland all have it as well. so maybe you just need to stay put here in the bay area because

this is where it's at. meteorologist kari hall, we haven't had a clear weekend for some time now. this week should be nice and clear for us. yeah, it's not going to be completely clear because we'll start to see some of that smoke coming back tomorrow and sunday, but it is good to have this break we've had for the past couple of days. because of these couple of weather systems we've seen moving by even some rain on the central coast extending over to the sierra. we're going to see still some interesting looking clouds thanks to the remnants of the tropical system that's moving by, but we haven't seen much in terms of rain. we are going to see that clearing out later on this afternoon as we take a look at what we're seeing now. our air quality is good for our microclimates but moderate for parts of the east bay and south bay and may be more moderate starting tomorrow. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, how is it looking now for the morning commute? overall good.

with mid-60s and it will be a comfortable day as our temperatures don't warm up too much. a look at our microclimates and talk about our weekend air quality coming up. and the quality not goodr h richmond to san rafael. this is across the span. you can't get to the north bay without a problem across 580. the bay bridge experiencing some slowing. you see it on our sensors. an earlier crash but i still think there's something going on as you approach the toll plaza. it's 6:42. new details a federal judge blocking the postal service changes that slowed mail delivery. the judge called the changes a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the postale vo vote by mail this fall and some states fear delays may result in voters not receiving ballots or registration forms in time.

the judge is issuing a nationwide preliminary injunction brought by 14 states suing the trump administration and the u.s. postal service. pennsylvania, meantime, will get a little more time to collect those mail-in ballots. >> and, scott mcgrew, a major legal decision there as well. yeah, another one. the state supreme court in pennsylvania has ruled while voters there do have to get their ballots postmarked by election day, which is the usual rule, the counties will have an additional three days to count them after that. president trump says that delay will delay knowing who won pennsylvania, perhaps the whole nation. as we've pointed out in the past, we've had election confusion before. we've had to wait some period of time, and there isn't some law that says we have to know on election night who won the election. the director of the fbi meanwhile told a senate committee thursday the russians

were actively interfering in the upcoming election, something we've also known before and have been warned about as well. attorney general bill barr meanwhile under fire for comparing the pandemic lockdown to slavery in a speech he made in virginia for constitution day yesterday. >> putting a national lockdown, stay-at-home orders is like house arrest. other than slavery, which was a different kind of restraint, this is the greatest intrusion on civil liberties in american history. >> it's sick. think about it. did you ever think, any of you, you would hear the attorney general say that following the recommendations of the scientific community to save your and other people's lives is equivalent to slavery, people being put in chains. >> a former aide to vice president pence, meanwhile, is

marc benioff pretty much says it all. he's giving employees the day off this election day and encourages other companies. san francisco's company has 50,000 workers worldwide. others include twitter, coca-cola, jpmorgan chase and nike. hey, tv's biggest night is sunday. jimmy kimmel will host the event but no in-person audience. the emmy awards that they're talking about here. people will accept the awards remotely. in addition to acting categories the nbc series "the good place" a contender for best comedy. we've all been really missing each other. it's great to see that picture. let's take a look at this nice picture we are seeing taking a look outside in san francisco and the fog is and felt the humidity. it's going to bring us cooler air as we go into this afternoon. nice temperatures reaching into the mid-70s for the south bay peninsula over to the east bay. and some mid-70s for napa today for a high testimony, this will be the coolest day of the week as we look at a storm system approaching from the north that will bring in showers across far northern california. we are just going to see an increase in cloud cover for the next couple of days but we'll also see as that system moves out the smoke may possibly return once again. let's get a look at our wind speed and wind direction forecast that makes aiz to the bay area. with a westerly wind and some of those higher gusts helping to

clear out the air. tomorrow those winds will shift in from the north and that's going to bring that smoke back. if you have breathing problems it's going to be another weekend you should probably limit your time outside across all of our microclimates and our temperatures will be slightly warmer tomorrow. definitely a spike in temperatures on sunday. at least those hot temperatures won't stay too long. we'll cool down early next week. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? well, hopefully the problems won't stick around too long. a sneak peek. not good for the drive across the richmond-san rafael bridge. the backup at the toll plaza because after disabled vehicle that happened april cross the span. things are starting to recover quickly as we get back to our speeds and travel times. you notice the top number has gone down to 19 minutes. it was at 28 minutes just a short time ago. really quick improvement as they clear the vehicle from that richmond to san rafael west 580 bridge.

that's right. breaking news we've followed on this friday morning. the trump administration announcing plans to stop new downloads or upgrades of tiktok and wechat. the ban comes as president trump was going to announce whether oracle would buy tiktok. if that happens the new download ban will not move forward at least for tiktok. firefighters are still at the scene of a fire in the south bay at a tire shop. it started about 1:00 in the morning on monterey road near east capitol expressway. and you can see that fire really a tough one there of those flames shooting skyward. it took firefighters about an hour to knock it down. no one was injured. on the coronavirus front while california is seeing a decline in cases and hospitalizations the number of deaths are on the rise. more lives were lost this week than last and in the bay area alameda county has recorded nearly half of all deaths so far this month.

contra costa county leaders working on a health order requiring they do more coronavirus testing. the county's top doctor says some providers are not performing their fair share of tests by making the process far too cumbersome. supervisors agreed saying doctors' referrals are slowing things down leaving the county to pick up the slack. santa clara county issued a similar order. travel is up in the bay area at airports with folks taking shorter trips to places like palm springs, but this weekend the bay area will see a lot less of that smoke in the air. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live for us outside, of course, in campbell. and, kris, i know downtown, parks, beaches, a lot will be visiting those places this weekend. >> reporter: yeah, going to be a lot of people itching to get outside because after a month of bad air quality, this is the first weekend where the air will be clean enough for us to get out and enjoy local parks and

beaches, our trails and even fishing spots. >> i feel great. of fishing in. >> because of the smoke in seattle the giants had unscheduled home games at oracle park. today's giants/a's game will be played under blue skies. bay area restaurants are hoping for a boost after losing several days to toxic air and ash when people could not and didn't want to sit outside. but because more people might be out, keim yoep your social dist. if you cannot, make sure you wear your mask. we don't want to see a lot of folks heading outside because seen after long holiday weekends like labor day and fourth of july. in campbell, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." okay, so maybe clear up a little bit of confusion for us,

kari. you're saying the smoke could return? is that just in some areas? no, we're morning. we are looking good with our air quality today but there will be some changes going into the weekend, so we do have to be mindful of that and people with breathing problems do need to limit their time outside as our temperatures go up especially on sunday. now early next week we are going to have a slight cooldown and it's going to be much milder and closer to our seasonable normal temperatures. in san fraisconce're looking at upper 60s. we are going to see still some cool air along the coastline. but once again we'll be monitoring our air quality. how is it looking heading to work right now, mike? better, kari. as you said we still have the sources of smoke, the fire, so that smoke is still there but less source of exhaust. these cars are moving better. a disabled vehicle removed. very quick recovery.
