"today in the bay" starts right now. and it is a good monday morning to you. thanks so much for making us a part of that morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. i hope you're all coming off a great weekend. we'll check that monday morning commute with mike in a bit. let's check in with kari and see what we are in store for this week. we've been watching the air quality that's been the big issue as temperatures have ramped up yesterday. as we look at what we're expecting today still some drifts of smoke coming in especially for parts of the north bay as well as the bay and the coast. the east bay will have the worst of the air quality as we look at some better air quality for the south bay. i'll continue to monitor that, and we'll talk about temperatures coming up. what's happening out on the roads now, mike? mostly green sensors but a couple incidents marked on the map as we take it full screen. you'll see a couple incidents,

one on the peninsula and one in the east bay, both cleared from the roadways. we'll track that. if there's anything big to report we'll let you know. i circled another issue in richmond, also the east bay, a fire. it's been there for a while since about a half an hour now, maybe a little more. it's a roadside fire just about out at 580 and central. back to you. all right, thank you very much, mike. new overnight a police officer in the hospital after a crash in san jose. it happened a little before 1:00 a.m. when police say a driver ran a stop sign on taylor, and i'm looking this up right now. i believe it is near third. they t-boned the patrol car. both drivers were taken to the hospital. they're not saying if the driver was under the influence. the intersection remains closed but it's not clear how soon it will taylor near third street. the nat mourn the loss of a champion of

gender equality. ruth bader ginsburg died in her washington home this weekend. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live to break down how justice ginsburg's legacy is being honored here today. cierra? >> reporter: yes, good morning. for decades an advocate, a fighter for women's rights and gender equality and fought those fights until the very end. folks here in the bay area all weekend gathered to gather her and that fight she lived. now things started off here in the city with mayor breed joining dozens of others in the castro friday to honor the late justice with candles. in the peninsula a moment of silence for reflection for the 120 people who gathered at a vigil at the city courthouse. and in oakland a drum circle formed near lake merritt. it was a chance to put politics aside and the strides she made for marginalized communities.

take a look at what one person at the rally had to say. >> i don't want it to be about other sides. this is about humanity. this is about justice. this is about all of us having rights and that is what the notorious rbg stood for. >> reporter: many reflected on what life may have been like had she not fought for equality with some of those at the gatherings noting women could have their own checkbooks and credit cards. you can see it was a weekend here in the bay area really full of folks honoring the life she lived and the fight she fought. she ultimately succumbed to her battle with pan trcreatic cance. >> cierra, thank you. house speaker nancy pelosi paying her respects to the late justice ginsburg. yesterday pelosi visited the supreme court. she indicated democrats are ready to fight any nomination from the gop before the

election. and as in tradition black wool has been draped over the courtroom chair, the courtroom bench, and the door leading into the marble courtroom. the memorial dates back to the 19th century. the court also said that the flags on the building's front plaza will be kept at half-staff for 30 days. "today in the bay" will have continuing coverage all morning long on supreme court battle and justice ginsburg's legacy. you can find more on our website, nbcbayarea.com. california suddenly hitting pause on the state's problem plagued employment development department leaving the newly jobless in a precarious limbo. more than 2.5 million californians lost their jobs during the first two months of the pandemic, and the current jobless rate sits at 11%, down two percentage points from august. the new edd stoppage will impact first-time filers for the next two weeks to allow the state to sort out fraud and reduce the massive backlog. more than half a million

residents have outstanding claims unresolved for more than three weeks and that includes a frustrated woman from gilroy who has been waiting for more than two months. >> needless to say i haven't heard anything and i want to know, was i turned down? was i denied? is my money going somewhere else? >> part of the problem is outdated technology which the department will upgrade during the standdown with a new i.d. system expected to cut down on fraud and speed up claims. our response team has looked in-depth into the california unemployment department and nbcbayarea.com/responds to check out our investigation into the department. the best ways to get benefits if you need them. >> now to the fires burning statewide, nearly 30 major wildfires continue to burn. the el dorado fire and riverside counties. that's the one that started during the gender reveal party and has claimed the life of a firefighter.

the scu and lnu fires are both 98% contained while the czu fire is 99% contained. the creek fire over in fresno county has forced yosemite to close is just 70% contained. >> the air quality across the bay area is starting to improve. however, an unhealthy air advisory is still in effect today. here is a live look in san jose and san francisco. it's amazing, though, you can actually see the city and the buildings on both sides there. we might get a breath of fresh air especially when it comes to the weekend so people could be out and about a bit. still need to limit your time outside if you're sensitive. for most people it was a great chance to get outside. we're going to see something else, a little more we can see the storm system approaching the portland area and as it moves

into the bay area later this afternoon the winds will pick up and we'll get more of a westerly wind. it's also going to be slightly cooler today as a result of that system moving in. we're looking at highs that will reach into the low 80s in the tri-valley and in the south bay reaching 80 degrees and 81 today in napa. we'll talk more about this coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking getting out the door for work this morning? kari, pretty good. on friday we had a lot of fog reported. the chp said still fog at the golden gate bridge. that's not uncommon and a look there doesn't look anything special or big to worry about. we look at the maps, the same theng for the speed sensors. there is a crash in oakland. we're looking at 880 south around the construction zone. we don't see the slowing we saw last week. lane restrictions are moving nicely right now. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. in the south bay that police investigation that continues between second and third just outside of japan town on city streets, it's a good enough

it looks like we're down about 470 points for the open. and here the markets are on a three-week losing streak, the longest stretch in about a year. those declines led by tech stock which has struggled in recent weeks, facebook, apple, amazon, netflix, google and microsoft all posting big losses. focusing this week reports on home sales and durable goods and traders are also watching washington with some analysts saying a new stimulus bill is unlikely now until after the election as the fight over the supreme court overshadows everything else. mba grads may be feeling better about their job prospects. a survey is signaling demand is returning. 90% plan to hire mbas next year. only 8% say they're pulling job offers to mba students who graduated this year although start dates for some new hires

have been delayed. a majority say they will honor the salaries that were offered before the pandemic, but pay for those hired next year likely will be lower. and walmart is launching a new private label clothing line for men and women. free assembly will be sold in stores and online, items priced from $9 to $45. walmart is looking to grab the market share here in apparel. many major clothing retailers were forced to close stores temporarily, furloughed workers amid the pandemic and the recession. while others like jcpenney filed for bankruptcy. marcus and laura, that could be walmart's opportunity. >> certainly indeed. a lot of people go there. thanks. well, 4:44 for you this morning. behind bars. next on "today in the bay" the overnight arrest of a woman suspected of sending a letter to the white house laced with the poison ricin. plus, vowing for your vote. the campaign events president trump and joe biden planned

here we go monday morning. this is a live look for you in early for you at 4:47 this morning. the air quality, that's still a concern. kari tells us no, no, no. meteorologist kari hall monitoring what we can expect today. what are we expecting from the

air quality today? >> it's mostly going to be in parts of the north bay, in the east bay where we see the drifts of smoke. along the coastline and parts of the south bay that's where we see some clearing, so concord one of those areas of concern where people do still need to limit time outside. as we look at our temperatures this morning, we'll dip down into the upper 50s and then see a little bit more sunshine today although it will be hazy at times, it will be a nicer afternoon with our temperatures coming down from where we were yesterday. we're looking at some low 80s in parts of the south bay and downtown san jose and 79 today in milpitas. as we head to the east bay we are still looking at some upper 80s in some of these spots like livermore and concord. 87 today in walnut creek. oakland today will reach 74 redwood city and along the coastline, mostly 60s. and even a few low 70s in san francisco. 85 in sonoma. as we go through the forecast a

couple of systems that will be passing to the north and that will help bring in more of a westerly wind. big changes ahead. it will get hot as high pressure moves in and it looks like it will kind of park itself just to our north over the next few days. a lot more of the green sensors that show that we will have some better air quality but still the north bay and inland east bay is where the smoke will continue to drift, but temperature wise it's going to be a great week, really nice with seasonable high temperatures. some of our warmest spots only reach into the low 80s while san francisco will stay in the 60s. once again we'll be watching that weekend heat up. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? we see speed sensors are not

a problem. we are looking at a camper fire that was reported on telegraph between mlk and 45th and just off the freeway. it doesn't sound like a big issue but the smoke might be visible. the crash on 880 around 29th is on the shoulder and the bay bridge toll plaza has nothing that's a big deal. that's what we expect. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 4:50. developing right now firefighters in southern california are focused on saving homes in l.a. county after really erratic winds pushed a wildfire closer to communities there. the bobcat fire has already burned over 103,000 acres. the blaze actually doubled in size over the last week. fire officials say they only have about 15% of the fire under control so far. it's been very challenging for them to fight since the fire is

burning in areas that haven't burned in decades. happening now for you, the gulf coast is preparing for tropical storm beta expected to make landfall tonight in texas and then to louisiana. the rain from the storm is already falling in texas. police say people on the gulf coast need to stay on high alert. when it comes to complications in the 2020 census count, turns out the pandemic is just the tip of the iceberg. this is where it's believed hundreds of thousands of people still not counted. to make matters worse for you, a tighter deadline. a recent lawsuit filed seeks to extend the deadline to october. a new overnight a woman suspected of sending the poison

ricin in an envelope to the white house has been arrested at the new york/canada border. she was taken into custody by u.s. customs and border patrol 80s. it is near buffalo. the letter originated in canada. she faces several federal charges. now to decision 2020 and the presidential race. president donald trump and joe biden hosting campaign rallies today in battleground states. the president is scheduled to hold two airport rallies in ohio today. in the meantime former vice president joe biden will be in wisconsin. it is biden's second visit to the battleground state in two weeks. >> both presidential campaigns and their parties are bringing in a lot of cash. the biden camp and the dnc combined have more than $460 million in cash on hand. now the trump and rnc have $325

yesterday's big hits leaving at least one star likely out for the season. happening now for you southwest airlines says they will keep that middle seat blocked off to help passengers social distance through the thanksgiving holiday. that middle seat will be empty through november 30th unless you are traveling with your family so you can all sit together. all southwest passengers aged 2 and older are also required to wear those facemasks. that goes for check-in, boarding during and after the flight. we'll be right back.

the niners suddenly hurting very badly. defensive stars nick bosa and sullivan thomas suffered knee injuries as did running back mostert who had a big touchdown run to open the game. star quarterback jimmy g. suffered a possible high ankle sprain, didn't even play in the second half. the niners still managed to beat the lowly jets. after the game all anyone wanted to talk about was losing so many key players. >> i thought it was a real good game by the team. mixed emotions losing guys like that. >> forgive througoing through a situation. >> because the niners play the giants next sunday night at meadowlands they're not flying home to the east coast. the outlook will really depend on what exams reveal. sources say bosa may be out for the season with a torn acl. if garoppolo has a high ankle
