great to see you guys. we'll check in with mike in just a minute. but, what, let's talk about the heat wave. we are in fall now, right? we are officially in fall, the first full day of fall. we are definitely heading towards hotter weather this weekend. let's enjoy today while it's still nice and mild and our good air quality that continues as well. we are going to see that continuing today for all of our microclimates. spend some extra time outside. i know i did yesterday afternoon. we're going to see our temperatures reaching into the low 80s in the south bay and up to 83 today in napa. mike, do you have a traffic alert going on? yeah, kari, this changed in the last ten minutes. we have a crash in fremont. let's show you on the map we're looking at the east bay northbound 880, the nimitz. as you travel past the connection over toward the dumbarton bridge everything seems fine except for dakota. closures for all lanes suddenly.

the map marks it farther north than i would like. all lanes are currently blocked as crews arrived on scene, major da car there. itl. trying to find out about injuries. all lanes north 880 are closed. you can route off and on at either fremont or dakota to get past the scene. we'll track it. back to you. breaking news this morning, firefighters in the south bay are investigating the suspicious restaurant fire that started about 2:00 in the morning located in a strip mall near downtown san jose on center road and tully. no one was injured, but we did see arson investigators at the scene. a worker said when he arrived he noticed broken glass, a brick and some kind of fire starting device. at this time the cause is still being investigated. a message this morning from california's occupational safety

health administration, protect are workers from the pandemic or you're going to face fines. half a dozen bay area facilities are being cited for failing to do so. here are the locations. it includes the gateway care and rehabilitation center in hayward which had an outbreak this summer. the santa rosa police department, sutter's cpmc, two valley medical centers in san jose. also canyon springs and the ridge acute centers. range from $2,500 to $32,000. big violations vary but were all connected to not taking proper steps to address hazards. our bob redell is looking closer at the story and will have more during our 5:00 hour. a total of nine counties across california can now reopen a little bit further thanks to a steady drop in covid-19 cases. the state's top health official just announced nail salons everywhere can now operate

indoors no matter what tier the county is in. individual counties can impose more restrictive measures. despite all strives the state is making the secretary of health and human services doctor says california's reopening must remain slow and stringent. >> we want to be slow and stringent so as we move forward we can be best prepared in case we see some increase in transmission that it doesn't cause us to take one giant step backwards. >> frustrated areas including disneyland are pushing for broader and faster reopening plans. san francisco is making it easier for parents and students to track when their schools might reopen for in-person learning. the county health department has created an online dashboard to track all the schools in the city. it will be updated at 9:00 in the morning every day in real time with information on which schools have applied for reopening and where that process

stands. some san francisco private schools have gotten the go-ahead to bring students and teachers back to campus. now it's hard to keep track of what's open, where, and we're going to make it easy for you. what is open, the county it's in, and how you can get there. head over to our website nbcbayarea.com and click on the county easing restrictions at the top of our home page. efforts to get the homeless off the street got a big financial boost. more than half a billion federal dollars aimed at converting hotels into permanent housing. in santa clara county an extended stay america on hill view court in milpitas will provide 132 permanent homes, but not everyone is happy about where some of that money is being spent. "today in the bay's" ian cull has more. >> reporter: nearly $30 million as part of project home key, an effort around the state to house the homeless and do it quickly. these projects usually take

years. developers say this will take months. santa clara county's goal is to buy this extended stay on hill view court in milpitas by november using new money from the state, then renovate it and by march there would be 132 perm nen rooms for the homeless. >> we're talking about homes people can live in next year. >> reporter: the coo of destination home says there will be full-time services on site. >> the sooner we can get people off the streets and into housing the sooner our community as a whole is going to be thriving, healthier and stronger. >> reporter: as part of the statewide home key program contra costa county and san jose are on the list to get money to convert motels and properties into long-term housing along with oakland, san francisco, and mountain view. but at the milpitas site people who live around the corner have mixed feelings. >> we are torn between what to do.

we are looking at some improvements here. we are also going to be tracking some changes as we go down the line. let's get a look at those high temperatures once again for today with oakland reaching 75 degrees and we'll see some temperatures in clear lake reaching 85. san francisco mostly in the upper 60s and some mid-60s for half moon bay. we'll talk about the heat coming this weekend as well as air quality that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking with an update on the east bay? well, kari, i have better news about the traffic. we'll take you out to the map. we're talking fremont northbound 880 up into union city. we have right now all lanes are still blocked by a crash. three vehicles involved reports of debris across lanes and crews all arriving at the same time. all lanes are closed. they should be reopening almost all the lanes. northbound 880 just past dakota means if you're heading to the dumbarton bridge you may be

i knew we'd lose our home... and we did. over 24,000 homes have been destroyed by wildfires in the past few years. wildfire victims need help so i'm voting 'yes' on 19. it limits property taxes on wildfire victims so families can move to a replacement home without a tax penalty. you never know what you'll be faced with. please, vote 'yes' on 19.

right now at 4:41 we are expecting a high fire danger for the weekend for all of our bay area hills starting on saturday morning for all of these areas shaded in orange. we'll talk about this as well as how hot those temperatures will get in our valleys. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> over my shoulder right now the red sign showing you the traffic alert in fremont, north 880 heading into union city all lanes blocked by a crash and debris. they move everything to the right shoulder. a little further from the south is what we're dealing with. you can use fremont boulevard as your alternate. good morning.

i'm seema mody. wall street is set to open higher after several days of losses. the nasdaq the best performer led by a surge in shares of amazon. gains were capped by concerns about a rise in covid-19 cases in the uk along with a bleak outlook. in focus fed chair jay powell testifies again on the coronavirus crisis. pr plans to kick off october 13th, telling warehouse workers they won't be able to take vacation between the 13th and 20th according to a notice seen by cnbc. in july prime day, the annual event to entice new subscribers to provide a sales boost in the middle of the year. elon musk outlining costs so it will be possible to sell a $25,000 electric car. however, he still says the

and here we go on this wednesday morning. a beautiful shot for us no matter if it's daylight or dark. 4:47 in the morning. >> at least you can see it. >> this is true. >> waiting for the sun's arrival. probably the coolest part of the day will be coming for us right now. what are we looking like for the rest of the day, kari? >> yeah, it's going to be a really nice day across the bay area but we are preparing for some heat this weekend as you get ready to step out the door, it's almost 51 degrees in santa rosa.

at concord it's 64 and upper 50s and low 60s for most of our microclimate. as you're stepping out expect it to be nice and clear, a good day for spending extra time outside. rar t more towards the mid-70s by late morning into the noon hour. notice the rain across the pacific northwest and of course we know it is much needed rain for the state of washington. eventually a push of milder air for the bay area and continuing to keep our air quality nice for today as well as tomorrow. notice for the weekend we'll start to see it going from green to yellow and that means people with breathing problems who are sensitive to the wildfire smoke need to limit time outside starting on friday but continuing into the week as our temperatures heat up.

as the high pressure returns an offshore wind that starts to build on saturday and that increases our fire danger so when we get that offshore wind, those winds will start to pick up and it will possibly see gusts up to 50 miles an hour in our upper elevations. and with that descending air that moves across the hills into the central valley and across the bay area off the coast it dries out as well as warming up, and that increases our fire danger. take a look at temperatures and how they respond to this wind direction. we'll see our temperatures going from the 80s to the triple digits by the end of the weekend. mike, you were following a traffic alert. and i thought it was going to clear by now, kari, but it did not. we still have northbound 880 the site just past dakota road just past the dumbarton bridge in the northbound direction. reports of all lanes blocked although the crash has been

moved off the right shoulder, chp said that's a slow drive. damage and debris in the dakota exit. you can use fremont boulevard that will take you past that. the rest of the bay as we look at the wide shot is just fine. one more crash on the blotter around 35th. it's kind of hidden by oakland on the map but it is heading up into the hills in piedmont. no major slowing but we'll, of course, track your whole commute. back to you. all right, thank you very much, mike. the czu fire is fully contained this morning. the wildfire started in the santa cruz mountains more than a month ago. cal fire warns that contained does not mean controlled. crews are still monitoring the fire for areas that may be smoldering. flames scorched more than 86,000 acres in san mateo and santa cruz counties. sadly one person died and 925

homes destroyed. a k- officer killed in the fire will be remembered today. officer atlas with the scotts valley fire department was killed after working on the frontline. he died following complications from smoke inhalation. a memorial is planned for 2:00 this afternoon. the event will be live streamed on the my scott's valley facebook page. new video as a community remembers a firefighter killed on the front lines of another wildfire. still burning this hour. a procession was held yesterday for charles morton and his body was escorted from san bernardino to an orange county mortuary. he died last week after battling the el dorado fire. firefighters lined up to pay their respects. >> this firefighter was a good friend of ours. it means a lot we can be here to support him, his crew and loved ones. >> el dorado fire was sparked after a gender reveal stunt went
