this compares the rate to that of major u.s. cities. according to the "san francisco chronicle" there were key factors that played into the outcome. how covid patients were cared for. the article cites in our city compared to new york city patients were often treated with focused individual care with one nurse caring for one patient versus what is laid out in nyc with one nurse caring for six or seven patients. san francisco has a lower number of folks with key factors like obesity and smoking. this information coming out as our nation reached that grim milestone of 200,000 covid-related deaths. the physicians cited in the article say if the city continues to stay that course we will continue to have those positive outcomes. cierra johnson for "today in the

bay." three more bay area counties qualify to move from the purple to less restrictive red tiers, all getting the green light to go red, of course. alameda county is saying not so fast. although the state is giving the okay there are certain businesses that just can't reopen. they're taking a measured approach. one business owner we spoke with says that she can actually see both sides of this issue. >> if they can reopen, but i don't know that technically can it be bad for the covid. >> as for schools alameda county says it will be more than two weeks until they give the okay for in-person classrooms to reopen.

the city of san francisco is seeing a rise in gun violence. bayview, mission and visitation valley. "the chronicle" is reporting incidents of shots fired jumped to 32% and contribute to a rise in homicides. 22 out of the 35 homicides this year involved a firearm. renters and landlords struggling to make it in the south bay have a new financial life line. supervisors approved an additional $5 million in financial assistance. it helps people stay in their rental homes and provide assistance to pay bills. contra costa county extended its eviction moratorium through january 31st of next year. well, a follow-up this morning, more bay area hotels are converting into permanent housing for the homeless.

santa clara almost $30 billion in funding. that money comes from the state as part of the home key project. the goal here is to buy the property by next month and renovate it into 132 units. that work is expected to only take a few months. >> the sooner we can get people off the streets and into housing, the sooner our community as a whole will be thriving, healthier and stronger. >> as we reported earlier, contra costa county also received funding to buy and convert a pittsburg hotel into permanent homeless housing. there's also plans to do the same thing in san francisco, oakland and mountain view. it's 5:09. kari has a look at our forecast for today t. >> we've been talking about air quality and the smoke that continues to drift in from the fires that are burning and we can see where they are now as we

look at the blue that shows the smoke pollution in the upper levels of the atmosphere and how clear it is across the bay area although we are still seeing a lot of smoke elsewhere. as we go through this forecast we do have a couple more days of good air quality before we start to see the smoke coming back in as winds shift. it will bring it back in starting on friday. i'll be tracking that as well as the fire danger coming up in a few minute. mike, what's the update on the morning commute? we still have a traffic alert for one very specific section of the nimitz right by the dumbarton bridge transition. it's northbound 880. there's activity there for debris and a number of chp vehicles from an earlier crash. you can get off the freeway if you want at thornton. everything is recovered except for at the scene. use caution and get over to your

to the south bay as we take a look at our clear skies starting with this morning, our temperatures in the upper 50s trending more to the mid-70s by early in the afternoon. another really nice day ahead. and we should enjoy it before it heats up. we'll talk about that and the forecast coming up. and technically the traffic alert continues in fremont.

we'll show you the speed sensors traveling north past dakota, only the right lane affected by the crash. i think they have that closed because of damage to the railing there. a live look at fremont a little further south shows you the volume of traffic through the area. light traffic in the northbound, taillight direction is why we see minimal slowing. we'll track your entire commute coming up. well, good morning, very happy wednesday to you as well. president trump will meet today with several attorneys general from red states to encourage them to look into social networks like twitter and facebook to see if they quash conservative voices. president trump thinks they do. the networks say they don't. bloomberg says trump asked for the meeting after twitter added a link to information about voting ballots into question and predicts no one will ever know the results of the election. twitter added a link that said learn how voting by mail is safe

and secure. the accusations that social networks are too hard on conservatives, or trump conservatives anyway, comes as bloomberg "businessweek" makes the opposite accusation that facebook is partisan but for trump. that its attempt to be neutral has had the opposite effect. elon musk and the folks at tesla announcing future plans including a $25,000 tesla within three years. now musk often overcompromises. "the new york times" says, quote, mr. musk has a reputation for promising game-changing innovations that often take far longer than expected or never arrive. and amazon says it has nothing to do with the so-called prime bike sold by a company that's closely duplicating the popular peloton bike but for far less money. the bike comes without a screen. you supply the ipad. peloton allows anyone to watch their classes for a fee.

you don't need the actual bike. they were making it sound as if they were in partnership with amazon. amazon says there is no such partnership and says you've got to stop calling it the prime bike. marcus and laura, i like those pelotons. i don't have one but i've been thinking about it. this sounds weird from a californian, the weather in california is so just generally terrible it's hard to get out there on a real bike. it's 100 degrees or it's just incredibly overcast with smoke. i think a peloton in some room would be kind of fun. >> hopefully that will clear out. a lot of people are getting those bikes and i've heard nothing but great things about them. >> yeah, i have a lot of friends who have them. i do like getting outdoors but the ease of having it literally in your house, there are no excuses. can't blame it on the weather. can't blame it on the weather. pandemic or not we still have only 93 shopping days left

until christmas. that's why walmart is announcing plans to hire 20,000 seasonal workers. new hires will work in the company's e-commerce fulfillment centers. retailer is increasing potential gifts reflecting the new normal like athletic leisure wear you see everybody just wearing something comfy around the house. >> that's what we all do now. when i first read the next story, i was like, is this real? listen to this, actor tom cruise is lifting sce for an upcoming movie. yes. now, if you can believe it, he'll be filming at the international space station so crews will take the spacex rocket there. details of the movie limited right now. but even nasa excited to have the actor come aboard. nasa administrator tweeted that he really hopes the movie will inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists. crews will take off into space in october of next year.

take me away, scottie. >> that's a different show. >> we haven't even seen "top gun 2" and it sounds like they have "top gun 3 in space" going on. >> in the bag. it could inspire some more scientists and engineers but, you know what, some meteorologists as well. meteorologist kari hall keeping track of what we can expect here on earth. yeah, that's pretty cool, though. we'll be checking that out. let's get a look at our live view in dublin. a lot of people already up and out the door. if you're about to head out, check out the seven-day forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen and we'll go by each microclimate. let's start out in the south bay with temperatures in the low 80s. another really nice one with a breezy wind and our skies staying mostly clear. we'll reach into the upper 80s in the south county. up are 80s more widespread as you head over to the tri-valley in the eastern parts of contra

costa county. for parts of the bay where we'll reach into the 70s it's going to be another nice one. along the coastline we're in the mid-60s and low 80s in palo alto as well as redwood city. san francisco in the 60s today and for our north bay high temperatures expected to reach 85 in novato. as we look at what's going on across the region it's been very breezy helping to clear out some of the smoke here. as a result of a couple of storm systems that have been moving across the pacific northwest, we're seeing another one bringing them beneficial rain but then once that passes high pressure builds for the week. and by saturday we'll start to see an offshore wind developing, a wind coming in from the sierra into the bay area. and we'll see those winds at times gusting especially for our upper elevations. and with that as the air moves across the bay area it's going to create a high fire danger

especially for the north bay. we will have a high fire danger, a fire weather watch that will be going into effect for the weekend. we'll be watching out for that along with some really hot temperatures. our triple digits will return as we go into this weekend even though now it's fall we're now entering into our wildfire season. so we'll be having more updates on that. mike, what's the update on the morning commute? >> we're definitely concerned about anything folks might spot because we did see a fire. i'll explain that in a second. i want to show you the big view of the bay. this traffic alert but not really any slowing anymore as you travel north just past the dumbarton bridge transition. we have the right lane blocked. there's a guardrail damage from an earlier crash and that was the traffic alert, but the slowing only at the scene so stay to the left as long as you can pass by fremont boulevard without a problem. the rest of the bay shows a

palo alto woman whose plan for a european cruise left her high and dry. she asked consumer investigator chris chmura and his team for a life line. >> reporter: good morning. the pandemic has been hard on bonnie street and her husband, both are high risk for virus exposure, so they've had to cancel an entire summer's worth of travel plans. that included a voyage through the baltic sea. after covid-19 hit bonnie canceled and asked for a refund of her $24,000 fare. she called us because she only got $14,000 back. we aren't sure why the remaining $10,000 was withheld, so we reached out to viking. right away a customer service rep got in touch with bonnie and she got the rest of her refund. $10,155. viking told us due to the unusually high volume of guest inquiries we are receiving because of the covid-19 situation, there may be some inconsistencies in the customer

continues. good wednesday morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. kari has our forecast. i want to go outside today, what's my best window of opportunity? i think all day long it's going to be nice, reaching highs up to 82 degrees which is very close to average for this time of year for the south bay. temperatures reaching as warm as 89 and low 80s as well. mike, you've been tracking a traffic alert. what's going on with that? >> it's still there but i pulled down the arert. we'll look over to the map and we see a smooth drive. the crash we're talking about is in fremont. your slow lane is blocked between whipple and dakota you may see crews but no slowing

anymore. slowing to the bay bridge as the volume builds. no problems, though, as folks travel through the area. a san mateo bridge with flashing lights over on the shoulder. back to you. several local employers are facing fines by state for allegedly not providing enough protection for employees from covid-19. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live this morning in hayward. this list includes a police department, health care facilities facing fines? >> reporter: correct, laura. the gateway rehabilitation center behind me in hayward, take this location for example, faces almost $24,000 in fines from cal osha for alleged covid-19 violations. the state says gateway department provide necessary personal protective equipment to its nurses and housekeeping

staff here. "the east bay times" reports 31 employees contracted covid-19 and 19 residents died from the virus. i called the center this morning. an employee had no comment and told me to try back later. the police department faces the largest fine, $32,000. they failed to do the required screening and an employee "the times" identifies as a 4 3-year-old detective died. they did not notify them of the death until two weeks later. we put a list of the alleged violations on your tv screen. you see santa rosa police at the top in terms of amount, gateway care, the ridge post-acute just over $15,000.

ed canyon springs post-acute, san jose just over $13,000. in a statement to "the times" canyon springs says it was reviewing the citation and, quote, remains vigilant in their fight. santa clara valley medical center, two different locations, one in north jackson and the other on south bascom almost $10,000 in fines. at the north jackson was for allegedly not warning employees sent to a nursing home about the possible risk of exposure. in a statement to "the times" they say they are reviewing the action following a review of the citation and might appeal. reporting live in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> really interesting. it is 5:34. a total of nine counties across california can now ease some of their restrictions thanks to a

steady drop. the state's top health officials just announced nail salons everywhere can now operate indoors no matter what tier the county is in. individual counties can impose more restrictive measures. california's secretary of health and human services doctor says california's reopening must remain slow and stringent. >> we want to be slow and stringent so as we move forward we can be best prepared in case we see some increase in transmission, that it doesn't cause us to take one giant step backwards. >> frustrated businesses and amusement parks are pushing for broader and faster reopening plans. >> san francisco is making it easier for parents and students to track when schools might reopen. county health department created

an online dashboard. it will be updated at 9:00 in the morning every day with real time information on which schools have aemployed and where the process stands. some schools have already gotten the go-ahead to bring students and teachers back to campus. i know it's hard to keep track. click on the county easing restrictions at the top of the home page. the czu fire is fully contained and in san mateo county. contained does not mean controlled. crews are still monitoring the fire for small areas that continue to smolder. flames scorched more than 88,000 acres in san mateo and santa cruz counties.

noticed broken glass, a brick and some kind of fire starting device. at this time the cause is still being investigated. it's now one of the largest fires to burn in los angeles county, the bobcat fire still threatening parts of the valley and foothills. the flames there have already damaged or destroy the 9 structures. firefighters say that number could go up. it's burned 112,000 acres in just 17% contained. new video as a community remembers a firefighter killed on the front lines of another wildfire still burning this hour. the procession was held for charles morton and his body was escorted to a mortuary. he died after battling the el dorado fire. firefighters lined up to pay their respects. >> this firefighter was a good

our air quality improving. i wanted to show you this map showing the upper air and smoke pollution clearing away from the bay area and to the east with a brisk onshore wind flow coming in from the ocean. as we enjoy that time outside how high we're going today. this is very normal for this time of the year and the middle to end of september we should be feeling temperatures in the low 80s in the south bay. 86 in morgan hill. you can see the changes as you look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. we'll see the upper 80s with fremont today reaching 82. they have some low 80s for redwood city today and san francisco reaching up to 68 degrees on the embarcadero. north bay highs will see some low to mid-80s as well. we are going to see some changes ahead at least in the near term.

these storm systems providing a westerly wind keeping our smoke moving off to the east and our air quality pretty good. then once that storm system moves out high pressure builds along the coastline. we'll get an offshore wind. now this change in wind direction will make all the difference and our temperatures will see it really ramping up in terms of how hot it gets as that air moves across the hills. we'll have a high fire danger and a moderate fire danger for our east bay hills. that's something we'll be watching as it gets this hot. some low 90s for saturday and triple digits from sunday into early next week. we'll be following that. mike, you've been following the morning commute. how is it looking now? well, just as we signed off on the last traffic report, the metering lights were turned on so great timing. that's the update. it was slow up the incline.
