many teenagers are struggling oe now more than ever >> that's right. sheinelle's here with a really special school in westminster, maryland, determined to make a difference about mental health good morning >> good morning. i was so impressed with these teenagers at winters mill high hool students from the peer advocacy program, they're doing a lot of ♪ good it's a club they started to spread positivity, hope, and support. ♪ as they lead the way in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health >> it was i feel lost. i feel disconnected. mostly i was kind of like, i feel alone >> reporter: when covid-19 first forced schools to shut down, 17-year-old diana flores felt like a lot of confused teens isolated from her teachers and friends, her circle of support shrunk >> it was definitely an adjustment not just for those big conversations but for the

♪ little conversations as well ♪ >> reporter: daily doses of human connection vanished from students' lives. many say their mental health deep river, lord, i want to suffered along with it the school noticed it was a cross-over ♪ growing issue before the pandemic hit ♪ >> we realized the mental health and how it's been attacking our teens. so we really rallied around and decided to tackle it together as a school ♪ >> reporter: two years ago, the school formed falcons of strength about 50 members strong, the students are trained to address mental health issues and support their peers providing resources and friendship to those struggling a group now more important than ever they know your faces and they ♪ can come to you in confidence. is that how it works >> people that might not have someone directly at home might know that we could connect them to someone they might be able to talk to or just kind of be a friend to them >> reporter: you know, i'm a parent and i would hope that my kids know that they can come and

they can talk to me. but i was a kid. i know how it is why do you think it's important to have a program like this where students can talk to each other? >> i feel like a lot of students, they would be a lot more comfortable opening up to students >> a lot of kids will find it kind of scary almost to talk to ♪ pandemic, winters m adults >> reporter: during the pandemic, winters mill was forced to switch to remote learning, all athletics and prom was canceled students struggled with the new norm diana and the falcons of strength asked the faculty and student body to share positive messages hundreds rose to the challenge >> a lot of messages that came out, we wanted things in different languages as well. a lot of other messages were famous quotes. >> reporter: but addressing mental health isn't always easy and often comes with a stigma. less than 14% of school aged children receive any mental health treatment in the past year many experts are urging schools to prioritize mental health ♪

education for kids >> i don't think that we can >> ladies and gentlemen, rabbi fully expect young people to be putsback. successful in their academic achievements if we don't address the social and emotional factors that we know impacts their ability to achieve >> reporter: the program is making an impact on students guys, raise your hand if you have seen this program falcons of strength make a difference at your school. can somebody speak to the kind of atmosphere that you guys were trying to create in your high school >> i feel like this program has had many impacts like, positive impacts on kids' lives. it has helped them through a lot. like, just the positives, the energy we give out to them it's great
