good morning. it is sunday, september 27th, 7:00 on the dot as we take a live look outside over san jose. a hazy morning as the sun begins to rise over what should be a hot day across the bay area. thank you for starting your sunday morning with us. i'm kira klapper. we have breaking news to get to. first, vianey arana joins us with a look at our microclimate forecast. vianey, we have high fire danger, gusty winds, tell us all about it. yeah, and you know, kira, now we have a heat advisory because of the potential for near record breaking heat tomorrow. in addition to the fact the red

flag warning was extended through monday, triple digits extend into monday and possibly even into tuesday. overall, though, what we're dealing with today is going to be the gusty offshore winds, low humidity, and those hot temperatures. so current conditions right now humidity tends to recover overnight but a live look over san jose. you can see we're starting out hazy and there is a spare the air alert. yesterday was an air quality advisory. the bay area district decided to go ahead and update that, now turning that to a spare the air alert. so i'll have more details on what we're monitoring, what we're expecting and how hot we'll get coming up in my full forecast. we'll see you in 15. thanks so much. now to the breaking news i was mentioning out of napa county this morning where there are mandatory evacuations because of a wildfire. cal fire says they're dealing with a dangerous rate of spread. the mandatory evacuations are along the silverado trail, deer

park road to the south to larkmead lane to the north. that includes the area of north fork crystal springs road and near adventus health. now to the video of the glass incident, as it's currently called. it is burning between st. helena and calistoga. cal fire tweeted out it is burning at 20 acres but the heat, the low humidity are giving it the potential to grow quickly. we will continue to updates as our newscast progresses. extra precautions in the east bay. some hiking areas are closed due to the risk of fire danger including parts of new hall park and lime ridge open space. those closures last until tuesday morning.

>> i can totally see it makes sense to me. a lot of dry grasses around here. it's probably a good idea. >> contra costa county firefighters are reminding people to be careful with outdoor activities. report any fires immediately and register for the contra costa countywide alert system. statewide pg&e says nearly 100,000 people could lose power today as a preventive measuring including a small number in the north bay. about 200 customers in napa county and now we're following breaking news in the same area outside of calistoga. those people could be in the dark starting this afternoon o rough tomorrow. prevent pg&e equipment from possibly starting a wildfire. now in other news tributes are growing for a mother and son killed in a house fire yesterday morning. the fremont mother was a well-known autism activist.

"today in the bay's" marianne favro spoke to her family. >> reporter: a family was sleeping, flames ripped through this fremont home. relatives tell us feda almaliti and her 15-year-old son, who has autism, died in the fire. they are believed to have been trapped upstairs. >> she just couldn't get him down the stairs. she just stayed, i guess. stayed with him. >> reporter: maha says her other sister and her 13-year-old daughter escaped the flames and were taken by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries. also known as feda sala, the 43-year-old mother of three boys was the vice president of the national council on severe auti autism. the autism community across the bay area and the country mourns the loss of the woman known for

opposes judge barrett's nomination. tweeting that the republican party intends to overturn roe v. wade and destroy the affordable care act with a confirmation. professor taylor says if coney barrett is confirmed and democrats win the white house and control of the senate in november it's becoming increasingly possible they could expand the supreme court from nine justices to a number that would rebalance it politically by confirming liberal justices to the newly created seats. thom jensen, nbc bay area news. this is the schedule for the confirmation hearings. it all starts on monday, october 12th, two weeks from tomorrow. that's when the judiciary committee and the nominee will provide their opening statements. and then on the 13th questioning of judge barrett begins. it is expected to last into the next day. on the 15th outside witnesses will testify including those who

should take the president, and what are the implications if he follows through with that? >> look, it's always been very difficult with these sort of bombastic threats that he throws out there. remember, we went through this four years ago, do you take it seriously, do you take it literally. i treat it like a hurricane warning, prepare for the worst, hope for the best. i think in this case, here is the thing, folks at the pentagon are nervous about what this means. the talk may be vanity, but the question is what is he capable of in defense, right? it may not be the same motivation some authoritarians have to stay in power. i don't think this helps him at all in polls. when you look at who is sitting there as swing voters and who is

left, a lot of people say that they sort of want to tone things down. they want to bring the country together. when he says things like this, i don't think it helps close the gap with joe biden. >> it would be nice to tone things down for sure. last week we talked to you about the coronavirus relief bill. the senate is expediting approval of the next supreme court nominee, senators, and the house remain far apart on the package. how do you think all this behavior impacts congress especially those who are up for re-election? >> i asked that very question to one of the republican senator that i have on the show today. you're rushing this forward but not prioritizing the virus relief fund. look, i think they know it's an awkward look. i think this, to me, is the boomerang republicans ought to fear. court fights have tended to benefit republicans because it

does excite their base. when you look at the voters the republicans need to hold their senate majority, they're folks that would like to see roe v. wade, that's number one. i just think that they look at this and i think the hypocrisy line, there's a lot of new vulnerable these incumbents are introducing into the campaign with five weeks to go. >> good luck to your packers today. i don't tear about that game but i know you'll be following it nicely. >> well, that's nice. absolutely. it's on our network. >> that was my goal, promote nbc. chuck, thanks for joining us. be sure to join chuck for this morning's "meet the press." he'll have exclusive interviews with the former national

two sisters founded this, nirvana soul. they say since they've invested so much time in the city it was only right to launch the business there. look at that line. people waiting outside even before it opened yesterday. the sisters tell us they hope to bring people together through the power of tea and coffee. >> no matter what came our way we weren't going to stop. so really that's what made the difference for my sister and i to continue to put one foot in front of the other. >> for now it's just hot beverages. the sisters do plan to let musicians play there once coronavirus restrictions have eased. cheers to that. we have done several reports on black-owned businesses as part of our making it in the bay series. >>

we are under a weather alert. i'll let you take it away. >> there's a lot to get through today. we are under a heat advisory and spare the air alert. let me guide you through what we're looking at today and how long this will last. as i like to say on hot days, get all of those errands done early in the morning, the earlier the better. san francisco, 63. on days like this we have high pressure building, we are quick to warm up. the red flag warning,hi been extended through monday because of the lack of sea breeze, an increase in winds. we saw gusty conditions overnight for the hilltop area. we do have that for the north sy talk about that humidity. what tends to see is the

recovery of that humidity. we are seeing descend humidity for now. as we head into the afternoon right around 5:00, humidity will fall below 10%. fighting a fire in the deer park area. 14% in santa rosa. that's when we start to see those dangerously low numbers. that high pressure builds in and these are the temperatures right around 3:00. 101 in napa. 100 in concord. danville, 193 in san jose. pair that dry wind and that heat advisory we're talking extreme fire danger. and how long is this going to last? as we head into tomorrow, again, that building high pressure moving in over the bay area and this could mean record heat likely for tomorrow. today san francisco has the potential to see temperatures climb into the 90s because of that strong ridge of high

pressure. tomorrow near record highs which is why the national weather service went ahead and issued a heat advisory that takes effect starting at 11:00 a.m. today through 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. even though we will cool off on tuesday we're still going to be seeing 90s and maybe even a couple of low 100s inland. as far as the air quality yesterday, because of hot temperatures and the wildfire smoke potential to spread, a spare the air alert issued. you can expect to see unhealthy air quality. the north bay and east bay, we'll be monitoring that closely because of the drifting smoke. i do want to get in your san francisco forecast. i know it's an away give that starts against the giants. they're going to have perfect football weather out there. overcast, mostly cloudy and the temperatures will be in the 70s. that's pretty good football weather. not in the triple digits like here. i want to give your local forecast. remember, no grilling. maybe do it inside with some ac.

welcome back. now back to our breaking news this morning out of napa county where there are mandatory evacuations that are expanding because of the glass incident, a wildfire that cal fire says is moving with a dangerous rate of spread. in fact, it has gone from 20 acres to 800 in just the three and a half hours or so it's been burning. here's a map of some mandatory evacuations along with silverado trail, deer park road to the south, larkmead to the north. that includes areas of the vineyards, all of crystal springs road and north fork and that reaches all the way to the east near adventis hospital. there are new evacuation that is cal fire just tweeted, college

avenue to white cottage road and all roads west of college avenue. this is a fast moving as you can see there the fire is burning. cal fire reported 20 acres burned, about three hours ago when this first ignited, it has grown to 800 acres, heat, low humidity, gusty winds are giving it the potential to grow quickly and we will continue to update you on the fire as the morning progresses. now back to that story we teased before the commercial break. so much has been lost in recent bay area fires, homes, businesses, nature. joe rosato jr. takes us to the hills above santa cruz county above the town of davenport where the czu complex fire claimed a piece of history.

it looks like it came down the canyon. >> reporter: above the town of davenport -- >> it's heartbreaking to see this. >> reporter: fire rumbled through like a train. >> lost so much history in what was a blink of an eye. >> reporter: a collection of train cars, their journey on the track. >> you can see the cabs on both locomotives are collapsed. >> reporter: the locomotives were built to carry visitors around san francisco's 1915 pan pacific exposition. after the fair they were scattered across california. but then al smith began collecting the original trains creating swanton pacific railroad. >> he wanted the railroad preserved so people could experience what was life. >> reporter: he donated the land and collection to cal poly, cared for by students and volunteers.

good morning. it is sunday, september 27th. 7:29. we take a live look outside from communications hill. a beautiful pink glow as we see the sun rising but that is poor air quality, that is haze. we have a high fire danger, a lot going on. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana will join us with your microclimate forecast and a lot to get to, vianey. a lot to get to and i want to bring an update as far as the napa county fire. current conditions relatively dry brush helping spread. the temperatures are going to soar into the afternoon. we're in the 60s and then we'll

head into the 70s. even though the winds are light and variable, we are still dealing with the possibility of seeing an increase in offshore winds heading into the afternoon and it's the fire dang wher it comes to the humidity we're worried about. look at 5:00, some of those levels are expected to fall below 30%. napa area about 9%. that certainly doesn't help, and as we go and move forward when it comes to that red flag warning we're still going to see the possibility of gustier conditions up in the higher elevation areas so, again, this is an hour by hour situation as many of you know. we're going to keep monitoring it. as we head into tomorrow, another thing we will look out for is the possibility of seeing near record temperatures. a spare the air alert is in place. in the north bay or east bay, drifting of smoke in that area as the fire continues. overall the low humidity, high

temperatures and variable winds heading into this afternoon. i'll have a full look at your forecast in about 15 minutes. kira? >> vianey, thank you for that. it sounds like in just the last few minutes cal fire has upgraded the glass incident to the glass fire because it has grown so rapidly over the last couple of hours. thank you for that. and continuing with that fire out of napa county there are mandatory evacuations between st. helena and calistoga. it has grown from 20 acres to 800 within the last couple of hours since it ignited. mandatory evacuations along the silverado trail. to larkmead lane to the north. duck horn vineyards, really important parts of napa valley history.

that stretches east to the hospital there. they are currently not under evacuation orders which is some good news there. the glass fire is, again, burning between st. he llena an calistoga. cal fire initially reported it at 20 acres but that heat, that low humidity, those gusty winds that vianey was telling us about gave it the potential to spread and it did to 800 acres. there is an update on evacuation orders. new streets have been involved. let me double-check that. college avenue to white cottage road, all roads west of college avenue. napa county sheriff is tweeting that if you are evacuating,

please leave the area, do not stop, do not park in turnouts to view the fire. emergency vehicles need access. please allow first responders to do their jobs. if you have loved ones in the area please do let them know. now to the east bay where park rangers are taking extra precautions. some popular hiking areas are closed due to the risk of fire danger. they want people to stay out of there. those closures will last until tuesday morning. >> it makes sense to me there's a lot of dry grasses around here. probably a good idea. >> contra costa county wants you to register for the coco county

shortly after formally announcing judge barrett as his supreme court nominee president trump landed in harrisburg, pennsylvania. last night's rally continued his trend of outdoor rallies at airports. this time many people were wearing masks. the president mentioned judge barrett's nomination drawing loud applause and touched on what has become key points to his campaign speeches. >> they're going to try to steal the election. look at this crowd. the only way they can win pennsylvania is to cheat on the ballots. that's the way i look at it. >> this was the president's second campaign event in pennsylvania in just one week. trump narrowly won the state in 2016 and it is considered a key state to win in this year's election. now to joe biden's campaign. his wife, dr. jill biden, campaigned for her husband at a drive-in rally in cedar rapids, iowa. instead of applause, lots of honking. most of the crowd stayed in their cars.

dr. biden promised her husband would work to restore justice and rebuild trust in america. she also recalle struggles of iowans who primary. >> joe and i carry all of you with us, and i know that americans across this country, you are wrestling with the anxiety and the chaos caused by this pandemic. >> and nominee kamala harris' husband also spoke at the event. again, as mentioned president trump and joe biden will square off tuesday right here on nbc bay area in cleveland in the first presidential debate t. starts at 6:00 p.m. and we hope you'll tune in we posted information on ballot drop-off locations. click on where to drop off your

welcome back. a quick clarification about a story we aired before the commercial break. if proposition 16 is passed it would end the ban on affirmative action. it would not end affirmative action. thank you for the tweet for fact checking me this morning. now back to our regularly scheduled segment with larry gerston. president trump nominated his third supreme court justice potentially replacing one-third of the court's members. at 48 years old judge amy coney barrett, currently an appellate court judge, would be the youngest member of the prestigious body. larry gerston joins us. we've heard a lot of things about her incredible record. what do we know about judge barrett?

>> her record is very clear, a strong conservative. she follows behind justice antonin scalia who was the most conservative member of the court. she's been critical of the obamacare vote by chief justice roberts which preserved it. she's also made herself known on reproductive rights, voting them down in various cases this is a person who know what is she wants to do and the president knows what she is and it's pretty much the way it's going to be. >> with that how likely is the senate to act on this nomination. >> yeah, the train has left the station on this puppy, let me tell you. mcconnell has 53 out of the 100. they need 51 to confirm. even the vice president is there if it's a tie.

only two republican members have said they're not interested at this point. mcconnell has done a good job of making sure all the ducks are there. yes, this is a matter of holding hearings, getting it done. it'll be quick and this person should be confirmed, i would say, before the election which, by the way, will enable her to cast votes on any election related issues. >> if there is any issue whether or not the election is valid. >> correct. >> democrats, as we likely know by now, complained in 2015 when then-president obama nominated a new justice -- i'm blanking on his name right now, but nominated a new justice eight months before the election, mitch mcconnell wouldn't hold hearings because he said the voters should decide on the president first. of course now he's reversing on that rushing hearings weeks before the 2020 election.

what do you make of that? merrick garland. >> you've got it. they screamed hypocrisy. it is right. it's been the other way at times in the past as well. if you have the power, you've got the votes. if you've got the power and you have the votes, you have to use the power to get it done. and they can complain all they want, but their better opportunity is to get over it and worry about other things. make your case in the judiciary committee hearings, and then move on. if they get stuck in this for too long some of the major points they want to make like the coronavirus and what not, that will be hurting in the process. it's going to be hard for democrats but, hey, this is politics. the votes are there. >> and this likely appointment, how would it impact the supreme court? we know a great conservative advantage. >> yeah, you're talking a solid five votes. justice roberts has been largely

conservative. sometimes he's swung left. he can't be the swing vote if it's a solid five for the conservatives and that's going to have implications. just a week after the election there will be a case before the supreme court on obamacare. that's the first tree to fall in this forest. you can bet on that being declared unconstitutional. barrett reads the constitution literally for what it says and there's no room in the constitution for the words national health care. you're going to also see women's reproductive issues fall. immigration, especially daca, things like that. all of these cases which are precious to liberals and important for conservatives will turn in that direction. >> it will be interesting to see what happens beginning two weeks from tomorrow. thanks, larry, as always, for your perspective.

welcome back. to our breaking news out of napa county where there are mandatory evacuations between st. helena to the south and calistoga to the north because of a wildfire that i go nighted about four and a half hours ago this morning. the glass fire is burning 800 acres. it went from 20 to 800. it is zero percent contained.

cal fire is tweeting this morning that they expect the weather to play a role because of the win, the low humidity and the heat. there are fire units from all over the bay area being sent to the glass fire for mutual aid. so cal fire, our firefighting heroes who have already been battling for more than a month, are on top of this and we will continue to keep you posted on nbcbayarea.com as well as our nbc bay area twitter feed. before we go this morning, and that's a look at some video from the fire burning, the fire line about three hours ago. we want to check back in with vianey arana, low humidity, wind gusts, a lot to keep your eye on today. >> exactly the sort of

conditions we don't want to see when dealing with fires. as far as the current conditions we're seeing light and variable wind conditions now. notice the increase in temperatures. so as the high pressure rolls in, it's going to continue to dry us out, bumping those temperatures up into the 90s which means it's going to drop that humidity and here it is. look what happens in napa. less than 10%. with the amount of dry brush we're seeing that's something that we don't want to see. an increase in the winds, offshore winds will pick up as well. we saw some gusty winds overnight in the higher elevation areas. that red flag warning will remain in place through monday. gusting up to potentially 40-plus miles per hour.

that's exactly what the firefighters were talking about when it comes to battling these fires. as far as your hour-by-hour temperatures in the triple digits for some spots including areas like santa rosa, napa, concord, 100 degrees. pair that with wind and high fire danger and a heat advisory will continue not just for today but to about monday at 3:00 where we could see the potential for record heat which is why the heat advisory was issued. 80s and 90s today for san francisco and tomorrow, now, note, by tuesday we're still expecting to see the 90s. a spare the air alert. the potential for drifting smoke is extremely high for portions of the north bay and east bay counties and, of course, to your met life stadium forecast for the niners, now thankfully they
