"early today" starts now >> good morning. i'm philip mena. >> and i'm frances rivera. a bombshell in the race for the white house with just 36 days until the election. the new york times with a headline for the history books today. trump's taxes show chronic losses the times obtained over two decades worth of the president's tax return data. according to the times, the president paid no federal income tax because he lost so much money and only paid $750 in 2016 and 201. the people called it fake news, while joe biden's campaign seized the opportunity comparing what the president paid to average americans.

>> the campaign is selling stickers that say, i paid more income taxes that donald trump nbc's kelly o'donnell has more >> reporter: good morning, frances. president trump is disputing a developing story from the new york times that nbc news has not independently confirmed. that report says that in the year he was elected 2016, president trump paid $750 in federal tax. president trump refused to provide us with any specific figure for how much federal tax he actually paid and claims questions about his finances are simply resurfacing again right before the election. >> we've been negotiating for a long time. things get settled, like in the irs. but right now, when you're under audit, you don't do that so we're under audit >> can you tell us what you paid

200,000 deaths that means the u.s. is accounting for 1 in 5 deaths worldwide, even though it's just 4% of the world's population you have brazil with 142,000 deaths you'll remember, the president there refusing to take the virus seriously, even as it led to such dramatic death numbers in his country. you then have india with 95,000 deaths, mexico with 76,000 and the uk with 42,000 and remember, that's just the official death toll. that's just where the official cause of death is covid-19 if you include unconfirmed numbers, it's likely went past that 1 million number some time ago. so can we avoid 2 million deaths can we step up our treatments of the virus? and crucially, can we get a vaccine up and running and distributed to a large percentage of the world's population philip, frances?

>> i hope the answer is yes. thank you. kentucky authorities are facing new questions after body camera video surfaced that appears to show the inside of breonna taylor's apartment the night she was killed >> reporter: frances, the one officer charged in connection with the case is due in court on monday we're also now speaking with taylor's aunt, who says that she feels lied to by kentucky's attorney general this police body camera video obtained by vice news appears to show the aftermath of the raid at breonna taylor's apartment back in march. it's not been independently verified by nbc news police have not commented on the footage but repeatedly said that no video exists of the actual shooting that killed taylor. now the legal team for taylor's family is demanding more evidence in the case be made public, after one officer was charged last week with wanton endangerment for bullets that

ended up in a neighboring apartment. his lawyer says he intends to plead not guilty no officers were causharged for taylor's death >> right now people are marching around the country because they don't trust the grand jury proceedings. >> reporter: while it was mostly peaceful in louisville, there were scenes of unrest in seattle and outside los angeles where a car plowed through a crowd of trump supporters in new york city, police clashed with demonstrators if you could say something to the attorney general, what would you say? >> we feel lied to there's not a day that goes by that, like, i don't think of her, like, you know, she was a huge part of all of our lives. >> reporter: a critical dispute in this case is whether officers announced themselves before they burst into taylor's apartment. >> the officer's statements about their announcement are corroborated by an independent witness.
