neighborhood. to see what remains. thank you for joining us. be safe. be safe. control. we are getting new images of structures, even homes burning right now. there have been waves of evacuation orders coming overnight as gusty winds fuel the flames. several neighborhoods in santa rosa are now evacuated -- here )s a look at where the thre fires are there have been waves of evacuation orders coming as gusty winds fueling those flames. several neighborhoods in santa rosa are now evacuated. >> here is a look at where the three fires are burning, it all started with the glass fire which is burning near st. helena and calistoga, also the boysen fire and shady fire. >> thank you for joining us early this morning on "today in the bay." we want to bring you that breaking news coverage as it is happening this morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia.
4:31 am
we're going to check the traffic getting out of these areas because these are massive evacuations that we're talking about with mike in just a moment. and, of course, the weather conditions play such an important role with what firefighters are up against. out live to "today in the bay's" cierra johnson live in the neighborhood of santa rosa. the last half hour that we joined you, there was a house behind you and now it's gone. >> reporter: these houses are going down very quickly. in the last five minutes there was a breeze that came by, you could see the smoke overwhelm you. i want to direct your eyes to that pickup truck. it caught my attention, almost unrecognizable through all of the smoke, but the house that the driver belongs to completely gone. just a shell of what it was this time yesterday.
4:32 am
i can tell you it is getting hot because of these flames. you see a lot of those embers. those, too, have picked up. these embers are starting to pick up since the last time i spoke to you. and the house next to us is where we were standing last time. it has continued to burn, that natural gas, that hissing we heard from the house next door, really still going. i mean, things out here are just devastating. just to see these homes with the pickup truck in the yard and i don't know if that was some kind of grill or you can see things standing when nothing else is. it's really unbelievable. i hear a lot of popping and a lot of crackling coming from the house next door. i don't know if that's the water hitting it or the actual crackling sound, but it's really rough conditions out here. it has gotten so smoky in the last ten minutes. i can feel it in my eyes and i can smell it through my mask.
4:33 am
we've also seen a couple little pockets in the homes that have not caught fire. we've seen a few bushes on fire and we've seen a fire at the bottom of a fence -- oh, that's a big breeze of heat right there. we've seen firefighters walking along some of those homes not yet completely involved just to kind of protect them. out here things still very active. that heat, it's like standing in front of an oven door that opens. you can feel the heat. that's the water you hear now, i can see it hitting those homes back in the distance. firefighters walking back and forth -- there it is -- working to knock down these fires. but i can tell you firsthand it is hot out here. my thoughts for these firefighters, my thoughts obviously with these homeowners because it is going to be a long battle. it is still really early. we'll be out here all morning. we're getting the feedback from the water, so if the camera gets foggy that's why. they're really knocking that
4:34 am
down. we're going to be out here all morning. it will be a lot of the same very, very sad sight out here. back to you guys. >> cierra, before we let you go, i know we can see a lot of the homes on fire behind you. you did tell us there are some homes within that neighborhood relatively close that are not on fire right now? >> reporter: yeah, if we just turn around it's like night and day really. this is a home -- you can see the framing of the window looks like it's been melted so you can tell it is hot out here. the home appears to be intact which is good news. you can see a firefighter working there with the smoldering brush fire i mentioned, working to knock that out. all it takes is that little bit of fire to have the house go up in flames. it appears here on mountain view this side of the home -- i can't even see the house numbers -- this side of the road appears to be intact, so there are some guys out here making sure things stay that way, knocking down some of the smaller fires before
4:35 am
they become bigger fires. you turn around and look, these houses completely gone in this neighborhood. >> it is heartbreaking. we'll continue to check back with you. make sure you stay safe yourself. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall right now. she keeps talking about how hot it is already out there. we're at 4:35 in the morning, kari. yeah, we've seen temperatures in the 80s and 90s. i want to given you another view of the general area where these fires are burning and, of course, for more specific information check out the nbc bay area app and you'll get evacuation information as well. as we take a look at the conditions here as we look around angwin, still 88 degrees and the embers are flying off to the south and west spreading the fires in that direction. we're going to have some really hot temperatures today. low humidity. and we know that those fires can
4:36 am
create their own weather conditions because of all of the heat and that energy it generates. it makes those winds really brush away from those fires so that's a high concern today. the high winds as well as the hot temperatures. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, we know people are trying to get out of this area. what are road conditions like? the road conditions are fine but the roadways are not the biggest in the area. definitely the highways -- well, let's take you to the map we're talking about. the main commute, no problem. i want to get folks located here as you travel to the north bay. that's where we have the areas cierra johnson, for example, reporting out of santa rosa. you see calistoga, healdsburg to the north. all those closures in calistoga and silverado trail, glass. highway 28 and 29. that is where cierra was reporting. she felt that blast of heat. you saw the flames all around
4:37 am
her. there's so much going on. also reporting from oakmont which is not far from highway 12 as well. having closures for highway 12. locals when you're told to evacuate, heed the warning because your route may be blocked if you don't. >> speaking of those evacuations a look at the evacuation orders and warnings in effect. take a look here. the shaded area you see is the area under evacuation right now. portions of santa rosa also being evacuated as those flames inch closer and closer to homes. some of those homes fully engulfed in santa rosa. we saw cierra johnson's video. in napa county a look here. take a look at this, the areas in blue on this map, those are the mandatory evacuation orders in effect right now. >> that's what's so concerning because these fires as we know broke out on sunday morning early in napa county and now have extended into sonoma
4:38 am
county. that's where we find "today in the bay's" bob redell this morning. he is near highway 12 in santa rosa not far from the skyhawk neighborhood where cierra johnson was. behind you burning as well. this is heartbreaking, bob. >> reporter: east on highway 12, east of skyhawk where cierra is, not far from the intersection of oakmont, there's this home on highway 12. the burbank fire department protecting this home. what's burning in the back, the homeowner had firewood back there. that's what you see burning right now. and one propane tank already exploded. we heard that one. there's another one in the back that they're expecting -- they're concerned about it blowing up as well. they're trying to keim theep th distance. you have fire -- as you move to the left you can see it looks like fields. i can't see entirely. there's fields and i believe homes back there that already burned. you're looking to our live truck and my vehicle, that's highway 12.
4:39 am
the fire already crossed over to highway 12. as you continue your turn to the left, that home i was talking about. if you were to continue to the left you would hit the oakmont neighborhood. hundred homes. it's been i'm assuming pg&e shut it off for obvious reasons to prevent any power lines from crossing the fire. the power is out and all the people in there are just law enforcement. keeping an eye on that. some video from earlier just part of that enabled the oakmont garden nursing home. that was evacuated earlier this morning. i think it was about two or three hours ago. you can see in this video senior citizens were he is corporated o escorted out and i believe taken to the vet center, an evacuation center. you can see a burbank firefighter getting some water . what they're trying to do the winds are starting to pick up. they're trying to protect one of
4:40 am
the sheds in the back is now going up. let me just listen to this real quick. they're trying to protect it from going up. we are seeing gusts of winds. i know cierra was talking about that. when i was driving up here from the east bay, when i was in vallejo, the temperature on my car thermometer was 62 degrees. when i got up to hear at one point it jumped to 88 degrees. right now i believe it's around 82. the conditions are, unfortunately, ripe for fire. you've got winds. you've got heat. and that's why you're seeing what we're seeing right now where you have these fires that are starting. one concern is this is going to keep blowing and, again, they don't want to cross more over into highway 12 or that oakmont neighborhood. it's just like skyhawk which is burning right now. oakmont isn't and they want to keep it that way. reporting live in santa rosa, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob. >> thank you very much, bob. we'll continue to check back with you for the very latest. it is heartbreaking what we are
4:41 am
seeing. just homes fully engulfed in flames. you talked about the heat out there as well. firefighters are up. we're going to take a quick break right now. we will be back and will continue to cover the evacuation zones as well.
4:42 am
4:43 am
right now at 4:43 your microclimate weather alert in effect as we continue to monitor the new fires now burning in the north bay, spreading smoke
4:44 am
across the bay area. unhealthy air quality expected throughout the day along with high levels of ozone because of the heat. we'll talk about all of this in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. and if we're talking commute, the commute is just fine. we're talking about concern for folks involved in the fire. we have a live picture of san rafael. highway 101 is just fine coming through the area. farther north we're looking at local roadways, highway 12, 128 and 29. the big concern in the areas affected by the number of fires we have up there. we want to take you out live to santa rosa once again. this is in the skyhawk neighborhood, live pictures right now. these flames are just rushing into some of the homes. this is in the mountain view way area of santa rosa. the skyhawk neighborhood is a subdivision in the area where we have sadly seen home after home completely engulfed in these
4:45 am
flames. it's been a tough situation for firefighters. people, fortunately, in the areas have been evacuated. unfortunately they're not going to have much to come back to. firefighters are doing their best to get a handle on these flames. they are able to protect some homes. we know there are embers burning out there as well. >> this is highway 12 in santa rosa at montana road. that's a barn burning in the back. so firefighters are trying to tackle that right now. certainly they are up against all of these flames this morning that they tried to get control of this fire and try to protect what they can. you can see them dousing that barn there with the water hoping
4:46 am
to save that structure from burning, and that's what we're seeing throughout a lot of these neighborhoods this morning that firefighters are up against that task. it's the fire, it's the heat from the temperatures and it's also the wind gusts that we're seeing in the area that is really fueling that fire and causing it to spread. of course we're going to continue to monitor this throughout the morning. and, you know, some of the most terrifying and heartbreaking images we've seen from this fire really are coming through social media. this is a facebook live feed we saw from the skyhawk neighborhood around 2:00 this morning and it shows those structures there burning near the intersection of mountain hawk and san ramon. and new video of the glass fire burning at crane park in st. helena. this video was posted by a "today in the bay" viewer on twitter. the orange flames, you see the glow there. the fire just burning. you can see it in the sky there. >> certainly a tough morning out
4:47 am
there for a lot of people. we'll continue to monitor that but also for you coming up on "today in the bay" the fast-moving fires. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the impact of the strong winds and heat will have on the firefight for us this morning and throughout the day. you're watching "today in the bay."
4:48 am
4:49 am
breaking news right now a difficult night in the north bay with three fires sweeping through western napa and eastern
4:50 am
sonoma counties. three major fires are burning. one of them the shady fire caused extensive damage overnight and triggered major evacuations in the oakmont area of santa rosa. right now there is zero containment. and there's no accurate assessment on a number of structures or acres burned. so far no reports of any deaths tied to the fire. and this morning a look at what we can expect from the forecast today. kari, we know we're already dealing with those higher temperatures. we talked about that last week. this morning dealing with those fires and we're dealing with strong wind gusts throughout the morning. yeah, can you imagine what those firefighters are dealing with out there with the flames coming towards them and the temperatures this morning have only come down into the 80s. it is very warm out there and we have some high winds. i wanted to give you another look at the areas where we are seeing those three major fires burning this morning as it has continued for the past several
4:51 am
hours. our temperatures around the area of angwin at 88 degrees. as you go up in elevation we are seeing higher wind gusts, and it's blowing those embers off to the south/southwest. in those areas around santa rosa and oakmont it can have a lot of ash as well as very thick smoke coming through. we're also seeing our winds coming in from the west and northwest at least in parts of the north bay. now as you head to san francisco and areas to the south it's more of a southerly wind where we're seeing the winds coming together making a funnel across the north bay and creating those very bad fire conditions. as we look at our winds going into tomorrow, looks like the wind direction will shift. with a southerly wind it's going to cause those fires to spread in a different direction from what we've seen before. that's going to be of high
4:52 am
concern for those areas that will have to continue to watch those fire conditions as we go into today and we have those evacuation orders on nbcbayarea.com. very low humidity to go along with that. when we see it below 30% that makes the fire spread and unpredictable. that's what we are seeing right now. and then that's combined with the heat so the heat warning will continue for today, the heat advisory for all of the bay area except for the immediate coastline but even there will be very warm today going into our microcallimate forecast. we're back above 100 degrees for many of our inland valleys, even san francisco reaching 93 degrees. you've been watching some storm systems to the north of us, but now they've arced higher to the north and away from parts of the pacific northwest into canada now. so it's just going to be hot as we go through this week. not much cooling ahead even as the heat advisory is allowed to expire by 7:00 this evening.
4:53 am
a look at our seven-day forecast. triple digit temperatures today but 90s all throughout the rest of the week. and, mike, you've been watching the roads and people trying to evacuate out of parts of the north bay. yeah, let's get folks oriented and show you the commute at the same time, kari. a big view of the bay. your typical commute shows slowing just a bit heading up to sunol as that crew gets ready to cloer over the next hour or so. now this is not clearing. this is what we're talking about where it says santa rosa and a hazard icon where i noted skyhawk. you will see cierra johnson reporting and bob near oakmont and one of our photographers in the area. that's along highway 12, one of the only main roadways through that portion fire is affecting, dramatically affecting folks there. in calistoga lots of roadways. you'll know the names. we'll talk about them and given you an idea relative to the rest of the commute, though.
4:54 am
right back to you, marcus. >> all right, thank you, mike. happening now for you another new wildfire we're tracking, this time in shasta county called the zogg fire. it has burned some 7,000 acres. we'll have much more news in the bay area this morning. it is 4:54. you're watching "today in the bay."
4:55 am
4:56 am
we continue to follow breaking news this morning, fast moving fires causing extensive damage overnight in the north bay. parts of eastern sonoma and western napa counties are affected. these fires are burning out of
4:57 am
control. no hard numbers yet on the acres burned. there's a lot being consumed right now. so far, though, we do know there are no reports of deaths. many homes are destroyed, however. some wineries are reporting damage or completely destroyed structures. thousands of people are evacuated from these areas. and as many people tried to get out overnight, roads became backed up. this was the scene on highway 12 at los alamos shortly before midnight. at least 5,000 santa rosa residents are trying to leave the area. this is the shady fire as it was approaching. >> temporary evacuation sites are being set up at the veterans hall in petaluma for animals affected by the shady fire. large be taken to the santa rosa fairgrounds. coming up for you on "today in the bay," our live team coverage, the breaking news continues for you from the north
4:58 am
bay. that's right. that's where those fast moving flames are destroying homes, sadly forcing thousands of evacuations overnight. we'll have the very latest from very close to the front lines.
4:59 am
right now at 5:00, breaking news for you that morning. sonoma county neighborhoods under siege from wildfires raging out of control. we're getting new images of
5:00 am
structures, many of them homes burning right now. several neighborhoods in santa rosa now evacuated. >> this is a look at where the three fires are burning. it all started with the glass fire in napa county burning near st. helena in calistoga. firefighters are battling the boysen fire and the shady fire. the shady fire is advancing in the direction of santa rosa. certainly a busy morning for you. thank you for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we will check in with mike. he has a great look at some of the areas and the evacuation routes. kari following the all-important forecast for us. let's begin right now with "today in the bay's" bob redell this morning. he is in santa rosa close to a neighborhood which is on fire. >> reporter: a quick question, we're live. any chance on saving that home, chief?
