prop 19 limits taxes on wildfire victims so families can move without a tax penalty. nineteen will help rebuild lives. vote 'yes' on 19. soaking my house, my property, helping my neighbors. >> right now at 4:30, danger still looms in the north bay as the wildfires continue to burn forcing the entire town of calistoga to evacuate. >> there are multiple active fire lines at this hour. we have complete live team coverage straight ahead as "today in the bay" starts right now. good tuesday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. of course we'll get to the traffic in just a bit. first, meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast for

us today. kari, still the loom of fires there in the north bay. how are the temperatures and weather today going to affect that? yes, still monitoring the weather conditions near the north bay fires, and it does look a little bit cooler compared to yesterday at this time. i wanted to show you the trend for today and what we are experiencing right now. remember yesterday at this time we were seeing temperatures in the upper 80s at this weather site southwest of angwin. at 62 degrees much cooler, a calmer wind, and the humidity is coming up. as we go throughout today we are going to see temperatures much lower, and the winds are calming down. we're looking at more favorable weather conditions to possibly help slow the spread of those fires. i'll be watching this and we'll talk about air quality coming up. mike, how is it looking for the early morning commute? well, kari, as we look at most of the bay, we're looking at oakland. a little blip under the "a" where it says oakland on our map

as we show that to you full screen, mostly green, construction 880 this morning. on the right side a new crash in the last few minutes westbound 580 as you head over to north flynn road. sounds like everything is in the center divide but it just happened. no injuries reported. we'll track that, of course. really up here this is the area to avoid, all of the local road closures, 112, silverado trail still affected at least in part by the activity. they may not have full closures. things are in flux. we hand it off to you. thank you very much, mike. the governor is now declaring a state of emergency after a record-setting 3.7 million acres have burned in california wildfires this year. the glass fire complex and zogg fire are adding to what is already a devastating wildfire season. here's a look at the curran evacuation map for you. 68,000 people are under evacuation orders in sonoma

county alone due to the glass fire complex. it is estimated another 10,000 are under evacuation orders in napa county. this morning we have live team coverage for you. our crews there in the fire zone getting an up close look at the damage. you saw them on the front lines all day yesterday. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us in santa rosa. first, we want to start with cierra johnson live in one of those evacuated areas, calistoga. cierra? >> reporter: yes, good morning. the goal right now is simply saving lives. this community is no stranger to having to evacuate, an evacuation, cal fire is saying, is the key to saving this community. on the way in here from san francisco you could see pockets of fire on both sides of the road and you actually saw something like this. i remember coming in looking to my left and i saw a hill on fire much like that one. it's pretty smoky out here.

a little smokier on the road in. that is one of the scenes you can see here and the reason they're asking folks here to evacuate. now we did have a chance to speak to someone in the last couple of hours. >> i'm 100% ready to leave. i don't feel comfortable with the looting or possible looting going around or my house. >> reporter: individuals said they're not comfortable. law enforcement urging to leave. to give you an idea how bad things are out here, one of the renowned wineries, castello di amarosa is looking at millions of dollars to repair. the fire in the hills is why everyone is urged to leave at this moment. things getting really serious out here in calistoga. we're live in calistoga, cierra

johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, cierra. all new video to show you this morning showing firefighters driving into the glass fire. this was taken east of calistoga in napa county to see how dangerous their drive is and the condition the crews are up against. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in santa rosa with the very latest. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. a much quieter morning here compared to 24 hours ago when the glass fire burned through this part of east santa rosa and the skyhawk neighborhood we're at now. you can see this is one of several homes burned down to the ground near highway 12, this neighborhood is. several homes in this neighborhood burned down. the fire department was just here. they just took off. they've been here overnight to monitor hot spots and protect other homes nearby. the glass fire has moved south into the state park, an area firefighters told me yesterday they were hoping wouldn't go but

it has. air tankers did attack the fire yesterday until they had to be grounded last night because of the darkness and the low visibility. firefighters were hopeful the winds wouldn't pick up overnight. i can tell you what we're seeing and experiencing right now we're not having the gusts we had yesterday nor the hot temps. it's under 60 degrees now. roadblocks and evacuations are still in place. here is one woman who tried to save what she could from her neighbors' homes burning down. >> the pictures, i put them in the back of the van to hopefully save some of their pictures and stuff that's chess to them. >> i've lived in sonoma county my entire life. i'm 31. up until three years ago this has never happened. and then the last three years it's been pretty much like clock work. >> reporter: down the road from us a couple miles away the oakmont retirement community has been evacuated.

that was evacuated maybe 36 hours ago while the firefighters were in there, we saw them yesterday, working to save their homes. they were successful. only a handful of homes burned and it did not get into the main neighborhood itself in the central area. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> you can hear the frustration in a lot of people. like one guy said, it's like clock work every year for them. bob, thank you. >> it's not what we want. it's also not just happening in wine country dealing with all of these fast-moving flames. another fire is burning in shasta county and it is turning deadly. three people have died in the zogg fire. this fire is burning west of i-5 near redding. it sparked sunday afternoon. more than 31,000 acres have burned. containment is at zero percent.

welcome back. it's 4:47. the glass fire forcing thousands from their home in the north bay. the fire is still burning out of control this morning having torn through some 36,000 acres so far. last night the entire town of calistoga was ordered to evacuate bringing the total number of evacuation orders to somewhere around 80,000 in napa and sonoma counties. a live look right now, believe it or not, these are live pictures. that glow is still happening.

this is the fire just above calistoga. at least 80 homes destroyed so far along with another 32 other structures. late last night governor newsom declared a state of emergency. the entire town evacuated. >> weather conditions played a role in the fuel of the fire. what about today? we've had some fog rolling in near the coast increasing our humidity and temperatures cooler. we've also seen the winds calming down. we are feeling some of the coolest air now around santa rosa. napa, 62 degrees and a little bit warmer for the south bay where we are currently at 66 degrees. as we go into this afternoon, it's still going to be hot. we're still talking about highs in the upper 90s, most likely not setting any new records, but we are coming down after a

really hot day yesterday into the upper 70s. you're really going to feel that difference in san francisco after reaching 96 yesterday. we're up to 78 degrees. so that cooling happening along the coastline and for the parts of the bay. now oakland today still reaching 85 and 90 in san jose. for the north bay we're reaching up to 92 in napa and 100 in ukiah. we're still in this very dry weather pattern as this high pressure remains across the region. you can see the fog starting to move from the south to north into the bay area. and so this high pressure will keep the smoke close to the surface over the next few days but also giving us hot weather until it gradually fades heading into the weekend and that's when our temperatures start to come back into the 80s. we know the fires have been so intense. you've been able to see this from space and so a lot of those nasa satellites picking up on all of the complexes of fires that we have burning across the

state and that smoke that's been burning, blowing across the bay area. look at our air quality, still really bad for parts of the north bay, unhealthy for the rest of the bay area and even going into the week. it's still going to be very unhealthy and taking a look at our temperatures for the inland areas we're in the upper 90s today. unfortunately, not much of a cooldown anytime soon. at least we are feeling the changes during the early morning hours. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking now for the drive? kari, we have to start off with a couple issues affecting your main commute and then we'll also, of course, talk about the fire zones. as we look at your map, mostly green around the bay. over to the altamont pass, west 580, a little accident there blocking part of your fast lane. one of the cars is perpendicular to traffic so tough to see the hazard lights. folks are slowing to get around it. that's tying up out of the

altamont adding another 15 minutes at least if you're coming off the 205 merge. southbound 880 through oakland your typical construction zone so southbound it will start around 23rd. in the north bay we have the fire zone, highway 12 still affected, marcus. in calistoga that evacuation yesterday evening but more of 128 open. watch for the traffic control as folks leave that area. back to you. >> thank you, mike. in southern california santa ana winds are fueling concerns for the firefight as they try to get control of the fire. the martindale fire exploded overnight in the angeles national forest just north of santa clarita. so far the fire scorched more than 200 acres and is 20% contained. evacuation orders are in place. now to decision 2020 and if you've been waiting to see president trump go head-to-head with joe biden, tonight is your night. the first presidential debate is

"today in the bay's" tracie potts is in washington with a preview of what we can expect. >> reporter: here's the stage hosting the first face-off between president trump and democratic presidential nominee joe biden. >> i am looking very forward to the debate. >> reporter: the president says he's not drilling down on policies or thick briefing books. his practice for the debate largely here, being quizzed by reporters in the white house briefing room. biden says he's doing his research here. >> i'm prepared to go out and make my case as to why i think he's failed. >> reporter: failed businesses, a decade of zero taxes, and years of mounting debt reported by "the new york times" are sure to come up as president trump takes the stage. >> it's a national security issue. you could potentially have a sitting president who owes hundreds of millions of dollars. the american people are going to want to know who he owes that

reproduction number is hitting at 0.95. but in the r number above 1.0 and that prompted businesses to shut down as well as delay in-school reopenings. new this morning some welcome news for cooped up parents and their young children. depending on what city you live in, playgrounds may officially reopen within a matter of days. that's because the state yesterday issued a new set of guidelines on how to safely reopen. local leaders across california will have to make the official call. some, including san diego mayor kevin falconer are moving forward. that's to the delight of a lot of kids and parents. coming up for you on "today in the bay" our live breaking news coverage continues from the north bay. >> it's where the fast moving fires are destroying homes forcing thoeusands of

and with fog on the coast and winds dying down, firefighters hoping to gain some upper hand on those fires in sonoma and napa counties. but the wildfires are bringing some smoke back into the bay area prompting once again a spare the air alert. kari hall tracking the forecast and your air quality.
