someone had died from an accident or criminal act. a new law makes it a misdemeanor and those fines up to $1,000. the governor also signing into law that may help lower california's prescription drug prices. it allows the state to establish its own generic drug label. the new law calls for the help and human service agency to develop manufacturing partnerships and distribute genetic prescription drugs. thousands of sheep trapped in the french alps after heavy snowfall friday night took shepherds by surprise. thousands got stuck after an early flurry of snow along with icy winds creating snowdrifts of about 7 feet high. this weekend officials set up a crisis center and launched an operation. evacuating all the sheep will take almost a week. it's 6:00 right now. and happening now calistoga is a
6:01 am
ghost town. >> i'm 100% ready to leave. >> the entire town under mandatory evacuation orders as flames close in. we're there live this morning with the latest on the overnight firefight. and with fog on the coast and winds dying down firefighters are hoping to gain the upper hand on those fires in sonoma and napa counties. the wildfires are bringing back that smoke to the bay area prompting once again a spare the air alert. the third hour of "today in the bay" starts right now. and a good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington. i call this our terrific tuesday. it is terrific for a lot of people. it is national coffee day and we just happen to be out of coffee here at nbc bay area. >> look here. oh, no. >> good thing you are at home because the coffee machine here is broken. our 6:00 a.m. producer, he's a little grumpy right now so be
6:02 am
careful for the next hour. >> uh-oh, he's going to get you know now. nobody messes with our producer. and cheers to you. hoping for a better tuesday. the firefight continues. we'll talk about the evacuation routes. kari, you've had your coffee, tell us about the forecast. we are seeing much better weather conditions around the area. 60 degrees, a calm wind and higher humidity so that should help slow the spread of those fires as our winds continue to calm down. we're also going to see the smoke settling in. we'll talk about our air quality and still some heat in our forecast. how is it looking for the morning commute? we have construction crews southbound 880.
6:03 am
haven't cleared yet. they're slowing there. the two arrows in san jose and out of the altamont show where the earlier crashes have cleared. a quick look at the bay bridge shows you the backup. the metering lights are not yet turned on. that's a little bit lighter there and of course we talk about the evacuations in calistoga though more of 128 is open, you do avoid the area because of that situation and more for the latest back to you. a record setting 3.7 million acres have burned during the wildfires this year. >> it's hard to believe, marcus. the glass fire complex and zogg fire are adding to what is a really devastating season which is far from over. the governor declaring a state of emergency. 68,000 people are under evacuation orders due to the glass fire complex. another 10,000 are under evacuation orders in napa county.
6:04 am
back to the bay area team. i want to bring in cierra johnson. you have the latest there for us this morning. >> reporter: yes, good morning. the town of calistoga is nearly empty because of mandatory evacuations. this community no stranger to those evacuations, and i want to show you why in this case the town is evacuated. it's what's burning behind me, that orange glow on these hills, so many hills are on fire and because of that residents here have been ordered to leave. the extent of this fire was shared, take a look at the video posted to twitter. it shows what the drive looked like. all those familiar hills and flames in this town. cal fire has a tough battle
6:05 am
ahead. the fires are raging and the weather did not help in the firefight. things are a little cooler here in calistoga and in some of the other areas so that is a plus on that side. nearly 5,000 neighbors are being asked to evacuate to help in the firefight. this town has witnessed the devastation caused by that fire. you can see a well-known winery, castello di amarosa, was damaged by those flames. the owner there saying it will cost about a million dollars to prepare. officials urging folks to leave. there are about four pit stops that i had to pass in order to get into town. they're not letting anyone in or out. it's because of those flames on those hills and the smoke in the air you can see. that's why they're asking folks to leave. please heed those warnings. live in calistoga, i'm cierra
6:06 am
johnson for "today in the bay." >> so important because they have a lot of work to do up there. thank you, cierra. we have new video to show you of a cal fire helicopter flying above the town of angwin. cal fire merged the three fires burning in napa and sonoma county. they say it all merged into one fire. it's now burned over 36,000 acres. at its peak cal fire says the flames were burning one acre every five seconds. >> wow. let's bring in bob redell in santa rosa for us this morning. he's in the skyhawk neighborhood. we saw a lot of those homes yesterday morning burn right here live on tv for us and that has changed that neighborhood forever. >> reporter: you have a few of those homes here behind me and behind this home something you can't see in the hills, the lights of fire trucks are driving up and down the hills. you're not going to be be able
6:07 am
to see it, it's too dark out. we're not seeing the fire activity. yesterday in these hills you could see the flames. but right now it's black, it's darkness. i'm assuming a lot of the flames are suppressed for whatever reason. it could be the change in the weather. it's much cooler, about 30 degrees cooler than it was 24 hours ago and, of course, we're not seeing the same winds. last night a number of people went up to fountain grove to look down into the valley here in eastern santa rosa which burned yesterday and they were looking for a fire last night to see where it's headed. we do know it's moved south into the annadel state park. one woman, her third mandatory fire evacuation since 2017. she says it's just devastating. >> we got all the horses out and
6:08 am
we're safe. >> pretty scary, yeah. my wife was packing, getting ready and i was just about ready and i was on the edge. >> i guess it's normal. we pay a big price to be here in california, don't we? >> reporter: there's still a mandatory evacuation in effect for this part of eastern santa rosa. you're not going to get in here unless you're law enforcement or the fire department or with the media. there are law enforcement checkpoints throughout as cierra was talking about in her area. we're seeing here long stretches of highway 12 still shut down. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. it's certainly been a very long night for evacuees, many of whom are still looking for a safe place to stay. many don't even know if they're going to have a home to go to when the evacuations are lifted. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda joins us live at sonoma raceway where we're finding
6:09 am
there's plenty of room available there. >> reporter: that's right, laura. i just saw some of the evacuees wake up and they turned their lights on in their cars and they were about to take off. i asked them if they would talk to us. they didn't want to go on camera but said they were heading off to work and did stay here overnight. they are very grateful to have this location. there are only about ten vehicles out here right now but this space is called 50 acres usually used for nascar events, this space holds up to 2,000 vehicles, so people are welcome here. that's good news. yesterday morning i spoke with one evacuee. he showed us on his phone how close flames got to his home in st. helena. that's why his family fled even without the nixle evacuation alert. his family stood in line. as of 7:00 last night they still had received no phone call from the red cross or the church on a
6:10 am
hotel where they could stay so they were heading back home even when they knew they had no power there and there are possible hazards that i told him about, because i went to that location in st. helena and there were hazards such as downed power lines and the risk of active fire still in the area. i texted him but still haven't heard back from that family. back here live you can see there are about 12 vehicles out here. one person from sonoma raceway just drove up so he said he will be here for the next 12 hours. they are getting this area organized. if you do have the transportation to get here, be prepared. have your mask. they may provide water but very little other resources. possibly you could have water and sewage hookup at a cost but very few other resources. at least it's a safe place to stay overnight. reporting live at sonoma raceway i'm sharon katsuda. back to you.
6:11 am
>> thank you, sharon. right now at 6:10 let's get a look at all of the smoke we have drifting into the bay area and the numerous fires burning across the state and that's going to cause a lot of issues for just getting outside today. unhealthy air quality continues for all of our microclimates. it's going to be especially bad in the north bay in those fire zones. unhealthy air quality today and we're going to see that once again continuing into the end of the week. but we also have some really hot temperatures continuing today coming down a few degrees in yesterday where we set some records. where we will feel the difference will be near the immediate coastline as well as san francisco reaching into the upper 70s with some upper 90s in the valleys. we'll track that with another update in a few minutes, marcus and laura. >> thanks so much, kari. keeping our eyes on the wildfires. they come amid the pandemic that we're in. next on "today in the bay" at
6:12 am
6:25 this morning, another covid-19 milestone passed. as a promising new rapid test gets the green light. plus -- meanwhile in congress they've passed another coronavirus relief bill in the house. will the senate accept it? we'll take a look. you're watching "today in the bay." when it comes to flooring, i'm hard to please.
6:13 am
6:15 am
right now at 6:14 our microclimate weather alert continues due to unhealthy air quality. a light wind this morning but we've seen our weather conditions improving near those fire zones. i'm tracking that as well as heat for the rest of the week. that's been the microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. and let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights were turned on just about 6:00 in the morning. there's the backup forming very quickly in the last 15 minutes. the map shows you the same thing with the arrow only at the toll plaza not for the maze. 880 cleared. we have a new crash near golden gate field. the fire zones in the north bay we continue following that. over to scott right now. good morning, mike. we'll get back to our fire coverage in just a second. a business update.
6:16 am
the house unveiled its latest version of its coronavirus stimulus bill. it had one earlier this year passing a massive stimulus bill back in may which the senate never approved. the democratic-led house now back with a smaller version of the same bill which extends the paycheck protection program and returns that popular $600 a week supplemental unemployment payment as well as a stem lar check to americans. speaker pelosi scheduled to meet with treasury secretary steven mnuchin today. mnuchin has been representing the senate and the white house in negotiations. wall street kept its streak alive with stocks moving higher on monday. today is the second to last day of the financial quarter. futures calling for a lower opening but experts say if there's a clear winner in tonight's debate we could see quite a rally tomorrow. and pilots at united have reached a deal with the airline to work less and get paid less
6:17 am
to keep their jobs. the deal mens united will not have to furlough as many people as expected. united still plans to lay off about 13,000 poem and of course, marcus and laura this is very important to us. san mateo county united airlines is one of the largest employers there. >> and hopefully more people will get back on the planes and some type of normalcy in all of this. thank you, scott. all right. the wildfires that we've been talking about, they're having such a huge impact on animals as well. take a look at this new video showing a couple of horses approaching a photojournalist out capturing the fire, what was going on. eric castro says they approached him. they nuzzled up to him off calistoga road. probably looking for that people contact there. lovable animals. look at this one, a hopeful story out of butte county where the north complex fire is burning.
6:18 am
firefighters last week found this little kitten in the fire zone covered in ash. it was choking on smoke but they saved it and now they've since named her baby yoda mostly for those big ears. an animal rescue group is helping baby yoda recover and put it up for adoption soon. i thought they were going to name it smoky or ash. a pretty good name. >> that was a twist we weren't expecting there but certainly well deserved name. >> as cute as that kitten is. >> very cute. you know what, stepping outside you probably see it, too, smoke in the air in a lot of places because the fires burning, kari, certainly affecting all of us in the bay area in some type of way. >> right, and so good we are seeing improved weather conditions. hopefully the fires won't be spreading as fast as they were yesterday. take a look at our temperatures right now across the bay area. we are in the lower 50s. now if you remember yesterday we
6:19 am
were talking about the fires and we really done cool off very much in a lot of spots near those fire zones. now we're seeing some low 50s as you take a look at sonoma, napa and 62 in st. helena. looking much better. we time it out hour by hour taking you through noon with all of our microclimates showing here. it will still be a hot afternoon. we're at 90 degrees in danville at lunch time. the south bay in the mid-80s but some noticeable cooling in san francisco. yesterday we hit 96 degrees. today it looks like we stay in the low 70s. and we'll still see some upper 90s for the inland valleys but as we go into this evening it will gradually cool off and we'll see some upper 70s and low 80s and a cooler night as well. looking at the overall weather pattern and what's happening still a lotra well to the north of us as high pressure blocks our chance of getting any
6:20 am
cooler air or strong westerly wind. this is going to continue to give us some light and variable winds and push that smoke down to the surface. high pressure means it's exe exerting a high amount of pressure on the earth and the air is sinking. we will see the smoke and air quality be the main issues not only for today but throughout the rest of the week and that's the reason the spare the air alert has been extended throughout the end of the week into the weekend. we're also seeing that coming along with some hot temperatures that really don't cool off very much at least for the next several days. we'll see our inland valleys reaching into the upper 90s and triple digits. for the weekend we have some upper 80s in the forecast reaching 86 degrees and that will actually be our coolest day on sunday. san francisco will see more significant changes here. we'll see some 70s over the next few days and then some 60s for the weekend. mike, you've been tracking the roads. how is it looking right now? well, kari, in the fire
6:21 am
zone, stick with me. we're looking at highway 12, the red stretch you see right here, still closed. bob is talking about skyhawk and oakmont and calistoga over there just jumping further up on the map as we take it full to the screen. it looks like 128 is open but do avoid the area. calistoga down to st. helena. more evacuations through the area so don't go through that zone no matter what the conditions. follow the local traffic control if you are local to those roadways. meanwhile recovery bottom of the screen, san jose northbound 101. crash cleared there around 680, 880 and the altamont pass. more traffic heading into the dublin interchange but without any problems. the earlier crash cleared. recovery south 880 through the construction zone in oakland and the crash or whatever was going on near golden gate feel has cleared. a look at the east shore freeway shows a smooth drive to the berkeley curve. there is the backup at the bay bridge and some low clouds are

less than a month ago san diego county was dealing with the valley fire which burned more than 16,000 acres. this week a red flag warning is in effect and i power shutoffs. one woman says she's learned exactly what to do and if she has to evacuate again. >> the horses need to be set up with like a piece of tape with a phone number on it. it is a little tough. i am a little on edge. it is hard. >> talking about her horse there and how to protect it. firefighters are stocking up on tools like extra long houses and sna staffed 24 hours a day. the pandemic and the world passing a significant milestone. more than 1 million people have now died from the virus. here in california more than 15,000 people have died with 813,000 confirmed cases. and president trump is announcing a new rapid covid test that he says will soon be available across the country.
6:26 am
abbott labs makes the test and it uses a small piece of cardboard, a special liquid and a nasal swab to deliver results in minutes. it also does not require the use of any machinery. officials say that it will still be administered by health care professionals but self-administered with supervisi supervision. fighting the twindemic. governor gavin newsom taking off his jacket, rolling up his sleeves, getting a flu shot during his online briefing on the wild foirs and the pandemic. he says it's vital in the twindemic. getting a flu vaccine is the best way to avoid putting a strain on hospitals and frontline medical personnel. he just wanted to show us his muscles. >> he had to bring out the guns. 6:26 for you this morning. coming up here on "today in the bay," our live breaking news coverage continues from the north bay.
6:27 am
that's right. that's where the fast moving fire forcing thousands of new evacuations. we've got live team coverage. >> reporter: yes, those bright red hills on fire the reason why calistoga has been ordered to evacuate. we'll show you images from this coming up. >> reporter: the aftermath of the glass fire in santa rosa. the favorable weather conditions that could help the firefight. you're watching "today in the bay."
6:30 am
soaking my house and my property, i helped my neighbors. >> right now at 6:30, danger still looms in the north by as fires continue to burn forcing the entire town of cal stow cal evacuate. >> fire lines in sonoma and napa counties right now. we have complete live team coverage straight ahead as "today in the bay" continues right now. we've been on for you since 4:30 this morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. of course mike has a look at the commute or even some of the evacuation routes people might need to take. first we want to talk about this weather we're experiencing right now and just how it's contributing or even helpingfir fight, kari. hopefully they do get more
6:31 am
containment. temperatures have come down significantly. remember yesterday at this time we were talking about this weather station that was in the upper 80s near the fire zone. right now temperatures are 61 degrees. the wind has calmed and humidity has gone up. which will hopefully slow the spread of those fires but we're seeing the smoke spread across the bay area creating unhealthy air quality for today and that will continue throughout the next several days as we will still see the fires burning to our north. i'll be monitoring the air quality as well as the temperatures. more on that in the forecast coming up. mike, how is it looking for those areas around the evacuation zones and the rest of the bay area? we'll point those out, kari. i want to call out a major crash now going on, a traffic alert for the east shore freeway. a look at the map and overall the commute looks good. san jose recovers from an earlier crash.
6:32 am
some slowing 880 through hayward. the big problem here is west 80 down to the bay bridge out of sunol and the richmond area and past golden gate field. word of a motorcycle down as a result of the crash. the rider i'm hearing is conscious but on the ground. we do like to hear the positive but a motorcycle involved blocking all lanes right now. folks are getting by on the right shoulder. this is going to cause a major backup that will relieve a little traffic at the bay bridge. as we move to the north bay still those closures in the evacuation zone. it looks like calistoga has more openings but avoid the area, of course, because of the evacuation overnight. back to you. >> all right, thank you very much. well, yes, the north bay fire is just the latest in what's really been a devastating year for the state of california with all these wildfires. a record 3.7 million acres have now burn in california wildfires. the glass fire and zogg fire burning in shasta county are now
6:33 am
the main focus. the governor declaring a state of emergency. now here is a look at the current evacuation map. some 68,000 people are under evacuation orders in sonoma county due to the glass fire. it is estimated another 10,000 are under evacuation orders in napa county. >> and this morning we have live team coverage for you. our crews there on the fire lines getting an up close look at the damage left behind. you saw many of them yesterday all morning long. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us in santa rosa. first we want to start with cierra johnson live in calistoga. this is where the entire town has been evacuated. >> reporter: good morning. exactly. this town is now empty because of those mandatory evacuations. the goal right now simply saving what is inside of the town because of what is approaching. you can see behind me the hills are on fire, that orange and the red glow -- the orange and the
6:34 am
red glow of those hills really making it dangerous for folks in this town. now we do have some video from social media of what it looked like driving past calistoga at the time. you could see those flames on both sides of the screen, something all too familiar to the folks in this area. now cal fire has a tough battle ahead. the fires are raging and the weather has not helped in the past in this firefight but as we've mentioned throughout the newscast weather is cooperating at this point. it is a lot cooler than it has been in the last few days. right now nearly 5,000 neighbors are being urged to heed the warning and evacuate because it is crucial in aiding in that firefight. this town has witnessed the devastation caused by this fire. a portion of the well-known winery, castello di amarosa, was damaged by those flames. the owners say it will now cost millions to repair. right now officials urging folks
6:35 am
to leave but some are nervous to heed the warning because of past incidents of looting. take a listen to one person explaining their situation. >> i'm 100% ready to leave but i don't feel comfortable with the looting or possible looting going around. there's lots of stuff at my house. >> reporter: and back out here again another look at those images. startling seeing that line of fire there on the hill. right now everyone should have been evacuated from the town coming in. i hit about four checkpoints with highway patrol, so they're not letting anyone in. they're urging folks to come out but, again, right now the key here is getting out so you can save yourself. live in calistoga, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> follow those advisories. cierra, thank you. some new video to show you that morning.
6:36 am
firefighters from alameda county driving into the glass fire. this was taken east of calistoga and napa county. you see how dangerous the drive was and the conditions the crews are up against. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live this morning with the very latest on their overnight firefight. bob? >> reporter: much quieter, much less hectic than it was 24 hours ago. we're here in the skyhawk neighborhood where yesterday you could see some of the homes that burned down when the glass fire burned through here. you don't seep in the backgrou in the dark morning sky are the hills. right now in the hills we do not see any flames, at least not from our vantage point, like we were seeing yesterday. the weather has definitely calmed down. the glass fire has moved south into annadel state park an area where the fire department was hoping it would not go past. air tankers attack the fire yesterday until they had to be grounded last night because of the dark and the low visibility.
6:37 am
firefighters were hopeful the winds wouldn't pick up overnight. so far we're not feeling any gusts like we did yesterday morning. temperatures much less hovering around 60 degrees. yesterday morning about 30 degrees hotter. roadblocks and evacuation orders still in place for eastern santa rosa. here is one woman who tried here in santa rosa yesterday to save what she could from her neighbor's homes on fire. >> the pictures and put them in the become of the van to hopefully save some of their pictures and stuff that's close to them. >> i've lived in sonoma county my entire life. i'm 31. up until three years ago this has never happened. and then the last three years it's been pretty much like clock work. >> reporter: we're here in the skyhawk community.
6:38 am
not far from here is another very large neighborhood that was evacuated yesterday and the fire department, of course, had a lot of engines situated there. a few homes did burn but they were able to keep the main part of the neighborhood still standing fortunately. great work by the firefighters over the past 36-48 hours in this part of the north bay. reporting live here in santa rosa, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, thanks for the latest there, bob. it's 6:38. it's not just wine country dealing with fast moving flames there's another fire burning in shasta county and it has turned deadly. the sheriff's office announced three people have died in the zogg fire burning out of control west of i-5 near redding. more than 31,000 acres have burned since sunday afternoon. some of the fallout from the raging north bay fires seen in nearby cities. a lot of people posting images of ash that really showed up in neighborhoods. some of those cases the ash falling in clumps.
6:39 am
it's also making for a new round of ash on cars, plants and even some pets. certainly that's something we, i guess, have to get used to now, kari. those fires still raging right now. yeah, and it is possible we could see ash falling in the north bay. another change we've seen is the return of the fog and some much higher humidity. you can see the shallow layer of fog rolling across the bay as the sun rises and relative humidity going from the single digits yesterday to the 90% range which will help slow the spread of those fires. it doesn't move across the landscape as rapidly when we have much higher humidity even as we go into the rest of today, our humidity levels are noticeably different looking at much higher humidity here as we go into today. it's still going to be a hot afternoon as our high temperatures reach into the low 90s in parts of the north bay with napa today reaching 92 and
6:40 am
some upper 90s for the inland east bay as well as the south county. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute? kari, we have a problem and normally i would say it's just traffic but right now i'm concerned about a motorcycle rider involved in this major injury crash according to chp. the travel time for the upper east shore freeway, it's grown by 20 minutes just in the last short period of time. westbound 80 folks are squeezing by this crash at potrero. you're jammed up san pablo avenue and that's tying up the traffic. locals may know the surface streets well am i would watch for chp getting through the area and don't rush through city streets. you don't want to cause another crash getting through the area. we'll continue to follow the fire zones. my biggest advice is avoid the area. watch those zones. we'll bring you the update. the rest of the bay anywhere south of the bay bridge looking
6:41 am
not so bad for your commute. back to you. >> all right, thanks, mike. next here on "today in the bay," our live breaking news coverage continues from the north bay. that's fast moving fires forcing thousands of new evacuations. a live report from sonoma raceway which is being made into a temporary campground. in politics the first big debate, of course, is tonight. we'll fact check ahead of that debate. let's take you out to live pictures this cleveland as they get the stage ready. but first our coverage of the ongoing wildfires continues on air and online. you can find an air quality tracker. check the air quality in your own neighborhood all on nbcbayarea.com. a lot more nuz ahead at 6:41. you're watching "today in the bay."
6:44 am
welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay" moving to decision 2020, most important day in the entire campaign save election day. >> tonight is the first debate, scott mcgrew. >> that's right, hosted by chris wallace of fox. good morning to you. it's an excellent choice for a first moderator. there were those who complained in the past their perception the moderator was favoring the democrats. they'll have a hard time make that go argument with chris wallace of fox. most sayhi is joe biden's debate to lose.
6:45 am
he's known to make verbal gaffes. biden is polling well ahead of the president in sefrlt key states. trump for himself is setting a trap for himself talking up biden's weaknesses ahead of the debate making all kinds of outlandish claims. if biden can do better than the president predicts voters may see that as a win. now the president is also known for verbal gaffes and outright inaccurate statements and he'll be facing a very tough moderator in chris wallace. we expect questions about coronavirus and the supreme court. wallace has questioned trump in the past leading to several viral moments. >> let's take a test. let's take a test right now. let's go down -- joe and i will go down and take a test am let him take the same test i took. >> incidentally, i took the test, too, when i heard you passed it. it's not the hardest test.
6:46 am
>> you see, that's all misrepresentation. >> that's what was on the web. >> the first few questions are easy but i'll bet you couldn't even answer the last five questions. they get very hard. >> one of them was count back from 100 by 7. >> now president trump has made it clear in the past he does not like chris wallace claiming he is a mike wallace wannabe. chris wallace, of course, is the son of the late great journalist mike wallace. trump has called him nasty and obnoxious with a low-rated show. fact checking a couple things before they even happen as we take a live look at the arena there being prepared in cleveland, neither candidate will have a teleprompter. if they did you would be able to see it and neither will have an ear piece. those are urban myths. the second fact check ahead of the debate president trump will likely claim there's a vaccine right around the corner. his own experts disagree. in a town hall with abc's george
6:47 am
stephanopoulos president trump said he thought a vaccine was, in his words, three to four weeks away. if he's right and, again, science disagrees with him, we will have a vaccine next week. i know you will tell the folks where to watch, marcus and laura. we'll be tweeting ahead of the debates @scott mcgrew. live pictures right now. take a look at this. this is the evacuated town of calistoga. much of that area on fire. these are live pictures this morning. it's been a long night for evacuees, many of whom still looking for a safe place to stay. >> and many don't even know if they will have a home to return to. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda joins us live this morning. she's at sonoma raceway where we're finding out this morning there's actually plenty of room there. >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcus. we just spoke with some evacuees who are here all the way from
6:48 am

yes, hopefully for getting more containment and keep them spreading so quickly. it's been much cooler this morning compared to yesterday. if you were watching during our coverage some of the temperatures stayed in the upper 80s and low 90s. look at the difference this morning, 57 in napa and so at that rsanta rosa. it's better to see the higher humidity as well as the cooler air and the lighter winds. as we go throughout the day, though, it's going to be heating up once again. we're looking at temperatures for much of the east bay in the low 80s in fremont but then you see some upper 80s and low 90s already at lunch time and then going into the afternoon to evening hours we're going to see some upper 90s with novato at 92 degrees. san francisco getting some noticeable changes after hitting those mid-90s yesterday, staying mostly in the 70s and coming back to the 60s and 70s for much

of the peninsula later on this evening. we are going to see some nice cooling, but it's going to be during those early morning hours and late evening during the middle of the afternoon when those temperatures will spike. and we're stuck in this weather pattern with the storm track way to the north of us because of this high pressure that's keeping it hot and also providing light and variable winds and keeping that smoke pushed down close to the ground so our unhealthy air quality will continue. it will be really bad especially in the north bay today and tomorrow and a spare the air alert has been issued through the end of the week as a result. as we are not seeing much in the way of changes in our temperatures, we are seeing some highs in the upper 90s and up to 100 degrees between now and thursday. friday still very hot but for the weekend still not expecting much of a breeze here while san francisco will see the return of the fog and highs in the 70s over the next few days.
