off the rails. the first presidential debate - more personal than political. how many of you are in a situation where you lost your mom or dad and you couldn't even speak to a nurse holding a phone up so you could, in fact, say good-bye. how many -- >> far more people, and, by the way -- >> right now at 4:30, off the rails. the first presidential debate more personal than political. we're live in washington with the latest. and if there's anything voters can take from last night's war of words. thousands of homes still in danger as firefighters battle the glass fire in the north bay. the latest on the difficult conditions crews are facing on the front lines. also, more small steps in

the long road back to normal. the latest on reopenings you'll see as soon as today around the bay area as "today in the bay" starts right now. and a very good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. weight get to that commute in just a bit but, first, let's start out with meteorologist kari hall on this wednesday. kari, of course, the fire something we're still talking about because it's affecting our weather. right, and we're watching the air quality as well as the weather conditions around the area of the fire. we're seeing temperatures come down right now only in the upper 50s around the glass fire area and we have a calm wind and very high humidity so hopefully that will slow the spread of those flames. but our air quality will remain unhealthy today especially in the north bay as we'll see more of that smoke coming in and it will be unhealthy for the north bay as well t and
4:32 am
that drifts across all of our microclimate as well. so we're going to see still some smoky conditions and hot temperatures as our inland areas reach into the upper 90s and some upper 60s near the immediate coastline. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead for the rest of the week coming up. mike, what's happening out there for the morning commute? kari, right now, very calm. only overnight crews as far as what's scheduled on the grid and no major incidents on the bay. a little slowing over on your right side as you head out of the altamont pass. typical. the overnight crew north 880, northbound heading to 23rd, two lanes are blocked. no slowing right now. typical the southbound side. when that happens we have slowing. right now we're okay. we still cover those fire zones. avoid those evacuation areas. we'll have continuing coverage of those fires but right now, marcus, i want to thank you for taking your it turn to speak this morning. over to you. >> that's what it's all about, mike. 4:32 and this morning after the
4:33 am
first presidential debate and the reviews are not kind. many on both sides of the aisle say that it was low on substance and the 90 minutes filled with constant interruptions and name calling. >> will you shut up, man. everybody knows he's a liar. you're the worst president america has ever had. come on. >> let me just say, joe, i've done more in 47 months than you've done in 47 years, joe. >> many political commentators and social media zeroing in on that the president refused to condemn white supremacist groups. >> you want to call them -- what do you want to call them? give me a name. >> white supremacists. >> stand back and stand by but i'll tell you what somebody has to do something about antifa and the left because this is not a right-wing problem. >> the biden team says they expected this to turn into a free-for-all. n't react.
4:34 am
the president tweeted that it was two against one versus both biden and the moderator. up next, the vice presidential debate in two weeks. covid-19 changed the rules for the first presidential debate but didn't impact interest levels. instead of a packed watch party at manny's in san francisco it was a virtual event. 100 people on one screen watching that debate. many viewers saying they were frustrated with the candidates and the moderator talking over each other. >> i think it was the most childish debate i have ever seen in my entire life. >> the most interruptions in my memory are going to be chris wallace's repeated interruptions of the president. so many times it felt like the president was debating both chris wallace and joe biden. >> biden invited a guest to be at the debate.

restrictive orange tier. this means more restrictions will be lifted. the biggest change here restaurants can serve more customers indoors. contra costa county also moved into a tier going from the most restrictive, purple, to red. and contra costa county moving into the red tier means things you can see on your screen right there can reopen at reduced capacity, indoor museums, movie theaters, malls and gyms. the county also says outdoors will rewith safety restrictions but it's still up to the county to say, okay. as we mentioned san francisco restaurants getting the green light to reopen indoor dining but only a limited number of people will be allowed inside. restaurant owners say they're happy about the step forward but they do say it comes with challenges. the city also set up a time line for reopening indoor movie theaters and outdoor playgrounds.
4:38 am
those changes are expected to start happening by next week. outdoor playgrounds means going outside so, kari, i know a lot of parents want to know is it safe to go outside right now? we're dealing with a lot from the fires that are burning right now in the north bay. yes, it's still going to be too smoky today and i think throughout the rest of the week. we're going to have unhealthy air quality. as we take a live look outside in san jose we're starting out with some clouds this morning and most likely a lot of smoke in the mix as well. let's talk about relative humidity because that's also very concerning when we start to see some dry air coming back in and our relative humidity levels will start to drop as we go into this afternoon. but especially for the day tomorrow and the reason why the national weather service is putting a watch on those north bay mountains and areas around the glass fire where it may spread once again as we start to see the winds picking up. we'll see a northerly wind today. that brief smoke into the bay

area but a little bit more gusty tomorrow. we'll talk about the impacts of that coming up. mike, what's happening out there right now for the commute? kari, as far as chp incidents, not a lot and that's great news as we take a look at the golden gate bridge. good because you don't have to watch for something you might not see. a little fog there, low clouds in the area of the golden gate bridge. the map shows no slowing there or across the bay bridge. as we zoom out to the rest of the bay a smooth flow of traffic. our speed sensors moving at the green level. again, we're watching the north bay for the activity and the continued closures, the expanded closures for 1 28 and highway 12. back to you. 4:39 for you that morning. a dramatic midair scare. next on "today in the bay," the investigation under way into what went wrong when a marine collided with a refueling jet in the skies above southern california desert. plus, the growing number of layoffs disney is set to make amid the pandemic. i'm voting 'yes' on prop 19
