you. we'll get to the commute with mike. take a look at the air quality laura was just mentioning, certainly a big concern for a lot of people still, kari. we are going to see the smoke come in today. unhealthy air quality in the north bay where we've seen all of that smoke still being pushed down as fires continue to burn and so we're going to have a lot for today and unhealthy for -- your time outside. it's also going to be hot again today with our coastal temperatures in the upper 60s. our valley temperatures in the upper 90s. we'll get a closer look at this as well as the rest of the forecast. how is it looking for the commute? pretty good, kari. we had that construction cleared from oakland. let's take a look at your maps and we have no real surprises or changes since the last couple of minutes. still a little slow out of the altamont pass. there is a crash reported

okay. so here's what's next. monday night lester holt will moderate a live town hall with joe biden. you can watch it here on nbc bay area. nbc news has offered a similar event with president trump. as for the debate moving forward there may be more focus on the moderators. here is what's scheduled. next wednesday the vice presidential debate, mike pence and kamala harris face off. october 15th the second presidential debate moderated by c-span's steve scully and the third and final presidential debate october 22nd. nbc's chrkristin welker will moderate. the glass fire burning in the north bay has burned now more than 46,000 acres. it is essentially out of control. just 2% contained. at least 80 homes in napa and sonoma county are lost not to mention the damaged property to wineries and hotels. more than 20,000 structures

remain threatened. the latest napa county evacuation order from last night west from highway 29 and 128 to the county line between diamond mountain road and petrified forest road. also the town of angwin and the area of polk valley. it started on sunday. laura, in santa rosa evacuation orders are already lifted for some of those homeowners in the fire zone. returning home yesterday really gut wrenching. many still had no idea if their homes had been saved or not. we spoke with one relieved homeowner in the skyhawk neighborhood. >> there was five or six homes that burnt on the corner. i was 300 feet from my house burning. >> some people now living in skyhawk are all too familiar with all of this. some of them actually moved after losing their homes in the firestorm that wiped out the city's coffey park neighborhood in 2017. let's take a live look

season and then open up the playoffs with yet another playoff loss. we're hoping for a different result later today when they play the chicago white sox at the oakland coliseum at 12:00 p.m. for those that are following the series, remember, the oakland a's are the number two seed in the american league but they are actually not even able to get a hit on the number seven seed. the chicago white sox at least through seven innings. they eventually lost yesterday's game, game one of the a.l. wild card series losing that game 4-1. now here is a's coach bob melvin explaining what the team needs to do in order to win today's game. >> we wanted a series. we lost the first game of it. now it's time for us to respond tomorrow. we're going to have to do more offensively. we can't score one run and think we're going to win tomorrow. >> reporter: definitely more offense needed for those a's. now this is their third straight playoff trip for the observiakl

a's. they've lost the first two seasons so this seems like a similar story. yesterday's loss extends the playoff loss streak to six games. that first pitch for today's game is at 12:00 p.m. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." all right, let's hope they pull it off. >> thanks, pete. now the games going on today, kari, what's the air quality going to be out there because, of course, we want our players to have good air quality and bring home a win tonight. yeah, i mean, that would be nice but we are going to still see a lot of smoke moving by. we know the fires burn especially for the north bay. we've had the most unhealthy air quality. as we head across the east bay it's still going to be in the unhealthy category and then we look at a spare the air alert for the other microclimates we will see still some smoky

the company's stock down better than 7% yesterday. nikola has had a tough time including serious allegations against the ceo. a claim one of its trucks in motion was made possible because the truck was rolling downhill not under its own power. on the flip side companies that are doing well include palantir, asana and velodyne. asana and velodyne on the stock exchange. poshmark and mcafee have started paperwork. snowflake, jay frog and sumo logic, funny names, but they raised a ton of money for their companies and made many employees very rich in the process. today is the last day of the financial quarter. tomorrow is october 1st and that means that's when the government guarantees for airlines run out

and we expect massive layoffs tomorrow particularly with united and american. we could look at about 40,000 job losses alone. while google's parent company alphabet wants its employees to stay home well into next year it wants them to return to the same country their offices are in. some google employees are working from a distant home, either the country they came from originally or one that they've always wanted to live in. marcus and laura, you've always assumed i'm reporting from san jose but perhaps i'm in france, perhaps out that window it's 2:00 in the afternoon. >> thanks, scott. major cutbacks for disney. the company says sinking revenues are triggering 28,000 layoffs. nearly 70% laid off are

part-time employees. disneyland in orange county is one of tpark's hardest hit. "essence" magazine is set to furlough staff. it will only pay salaries through the rest of the week cited revenue losses. how about something good for you that morning. one airline trying to make the most of things, really to make up some of that lost revenue. >> singapore airlines is rolling out new services that doesn't involve flying. customers can now enjoy lunch and a movie onboard a parked plane. they can even chat with pilots, test out a flight simulator. the airline is launching a food delivery service so you can enjoy airline food at home if that's really your thing. i don't know. i usually only eat the cookies. >> yeah, i mean -- some of their food is not bad. >> we could have airline food at home or we could pay to sit on the tarmac if we want to.

okay. >> well, the only thing i could see sitting on the tarmac maybe people have fears of flying -- >> this would be a good way. >> because you're not going anywhere. >> a lot of us aren't. some people not even going outside right now because of the air quality is not great conditions. >> right. i was just wanting to show you all of the fires we have, the major fires we have burning across the state right now and the reason that air quality is so bad you look at some of the complexes of fires that we have farther off to the north and east of here. you have the august complex as well as the glass fire. these fires are still going and you have more in southern california. cal fire posted how many acres have burned. we're close to 3.7 million acres

burned. but on the five-year average we normally get about year compared to 2019 when only had 5,487 fires. 2020 has been a bad year shattering all kinds of records. hopefully we won't see many more of those fires continuing as we go into the next several weeks. temperatures will be heating up once again. we're still dealing with really hot air and so our highs today will reach into the upper 80s and some upper 90s in some of our inland temperatures once again up to 99 through the tri-valley and 93 in napa. this storm system will stay to the north and we are going to have more of the heat advisory

going back into effect as we go towards thursday and our seven-day forecast reflects that as we see temperatures from the upper 90s to the triple digits tomorrow. we'll continue to monitor that. mike, what's the update right now? looking over at thumbs up areas, the north bay at the top of your screen, the cluster of the closures are local roadways, 128. look at the bay bridge as we start to look at the volume a little bit more but not a big deal. the glass fire, a little bit of slowing out of the altamont building for 84 in through livermore and nothing big going on. we love good news.

granddaughter from his malibu home. authorities say the 49ers legend and wife jennifer were able to stop the woman. 39-year-old woman pleaded not guilty. her attorney says that she had no idea who montana was at the time and is very sorry. an update on the search for a covid vaccine. a study published in the "new england journal of medicine" found older people given moderna's vaccine had immune response similar to those in young adults. older people are more at risk. new data shows alcohol consumption is soaring during the pandemic especially among women. a 17% increase for females and a spike among people aged 30 to 59. 5:25 for you that morning. hundreds of thousands of laid off workers are in limbo waiting for the unemployment office to

process their applications for those benefits. >> you're right, marcus. some people have waited for months. consumer investigator chris chmura has some news, some frustrating findings, really, that explain why some of these delays have dragged on. >> reporter: good morning. we're talking about the employment development department known as edd. we're going through a review of edd that governor newsom recently ordered and it's telling. auditors looked under the hood and found a broad mix of problems that have contributed to a backlog, inadequate training, stacks of unopened mail and some newly hired state workers who are being paid but there was no actual work for them to do. how does hiring new state workers to do nothing help people get their unemployment benefits? >> if they are hiring people just to hire people who aren't helping somebody already makes no sense to me at all. >> reporter: we asked the edd some questions about those workers. they did not get back to us. edd has hit the pause button and

good morning. we're out here for another morning and i can tell you -- i can show you why. it's because of those hills. you can see that all too familiar orange glow and the fire there at the top of that hill here in the town of calistoga. now members of this community were asked to evacuate so crews could focus solely on the firefight instead of possibly rescue missions. we had crews spread throughout the community last night and they tell us at one point those fire trucks could be seen racing to the hills to knock down the fire that continues to burn in town. now when neighbors do finally -- are able to return, they will find landmarks have been damaged by fire. they're working for nearly 17 years. the wine business has been damaged along with land throughout this community. take a listen to what that business owner has to say about the intensity of the fire. >> this is the life blood and the life force of making wine.

it's still standing. it's still here. everything is outside. we're incredibly fortunate. >> reporter: they are fortunate, indeed, and other folks fortunate the fire chief of the strike team. remember the fire in the skyhawk neighborhood that we covered on monday? while walking the neighborhood looking for hot spots the chief of that crew was just missed being hit by a chimney. it was a sight to see, a very dangerous situation as is this fire. when i was driving down the street to this live shot you could see the hot spots, flames on the side of the road getting here. limbs on fire. fence posts on fire. that is why this town has been evacuated so crews can work to knock down those hot spots and bigger fires that continue to burn here in the town of calistoga.

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in walnut creek with a closer look at what this means for contra costa county. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. the state has given contra costa permission to enter the red tier phase of reopening making contra costa county actually joining all the other bay area counties except for sonoma which has already achieved this phase. you can see on our map sonoma is

still in the purple tier. covid is widespread there according to the state. san francisco just moved into orange which means the spread is moderate. that's the only bay area county to advance that far so far and coco and the others are red which means they have substantial spread. under the red tier coco county can now reopen certain things at reduced capacity. you see them on your tv screen, indoor museums, malls and gyms. outdoor playgrounds will reopen. the state is allowing all outdoor playgrounds to reopen with safety restrictions but it's still up to the county to say okay or not. after 14 days in the red tier contra costa county will be able to resume in-person classes, again, after 14 days. the superintendent of schools says this is a, quote, positive development. she said it's up to schools to decide if they want to return. the county says it distributed ppe to prep for a possible

return to campus. they're providing special training on safety measures. with san francisco in the orange tier now that county and city can allow indoor dining and places of worship to mccarthy's bar who tells us she rather bizarre directive she says is coming from the city. >> another directive the tvs are not allowed to be on which doesn't make any sense at all. i don't think anyone is going to catch covid from watching a football game. >> reporter: a number of gyms in san francisco are not happy with the city even though the state says those businesses can reopen at 25% capacity. san francisco won't allow it. reporting live here in walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay." bob, thank you. more home ownership may be on the way for people trying to

make it in the bay and across california thanks to a bill signed into law this week inspired by the oakland activist groups moms for housing. they briefly occupied a vacant home. the law required homes be sold individually at auctions rather than bundled and sold to ass fo into the hands of corporations, meaning more home buyers and fewer renters. that new law also allows corporations to be fined for blighted properties. it's 5:40 right now. halfway through our workweek and what a busy one it has been. everybody always hopes for better air conditions, but that spare the air alert lasts through friday, kari? it does. we're still going to have unhealthy air quality through at least friday, maybe extended into the weekend, but our temperatures are still really hot. we're looking at highs in the south bay reaching into the upper 80s and some low 90s for

80s in morgan hill, a high of 99 in antioch. oakland today reaching a high of 82 degrees and some 70s in san francisco. meantime napa will reach 93 degrees. we can see our microclimates in full effect. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as we talk about more heat in the forecast. for tomorrow there will be a new heat advisory going into effect for all of the bay area excluding the immediate coastline where we'll see the highs reaching into the triple digits once again. so our air quality is the other issue on top of the heat. for today for the parts of the north bay as well as the inland east bay it's going to be unhealthy out there and then we'll see some unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups throughout the end of the week and then by the weekend it improves slightly as we start to see much more of a breezy wind as this storm system approaches parts of the pacific northwest and moves up into vancouver but we'll see some of those winds
