right now at 6:44 we, unfortunately, are not done with the fire danger just yet. a new fire weather watch going up for the north bay mountains and around the glass fire all of these areas shaded in orange which begins tomorrow afternoon. i'll talk about the increasing winds, the low humidity and the hot temperatures that continue in the forecast coming up. and an hour after it was reported we still have one lane partially blocked south 880 heading through hayward. more slowing just past the san mateo bridge. that volume builds down to union
6:38 am
city. also san jose. we take a look at the headlights. no major problems, just a little bit of slowing between 680 and observing ro oakland road. thanks so much, mike. it is 6:45. we're digesting last night's presidential debate as probably many of you are at home as well. >> and before we dive into this with scott mcgrew, reaction from lester holt and savannah guthrie probably sums up what most of you felt. >> the name calling that went to a new level, frankly, savannah, i'm at a bit of a loss for words. >> this was different, an all-out grudge match, undignified at many times, cringe worthy. >> loss of words. that pretty much sums up the reaction from a lot of people. >> it wasn't dignified at all.
6:39 am
let's bring in scott mcgrew. honestly i would have turned it off if i weren't paid to watch it. already talk of not having the next three debates, this one went so poorly or at the very least the future moderators of the debate having some way of turning off the microphones so one person can talk at a time. each candidate was given two minutes to react. part of the time designated for biden's answer to a question. >> health care at a much lower price -- >> he doesn't know how to do that. he has never offered a plan. he has never done a single thing. >> gentlemen, you are both speaking at the same time. >> moderator chris wallace not able to stop the two from interrupting each other. at one point wallace reminding the president his side agreed to allow biden two minutes of uninterrupted time but never actually allowed biden to speak
6:40 am
uninterrupted. biden for his part called the president a clown and at one point told the president of the united states shut up, man. democrats had most feared that biden would lose his cool or make a biden-esque gaffe that he is known for. perhaps because he never got the chance. instead he spent a great deal of time ignoring the moderator and his opponent looking into the camera instead. we'll be eager to find out the ratings on this episode because, we suspect, based on what people are saying on social media, they watch for about half an hour and then turn the whole thing off. jake tapper of cnn called the debate a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside a train wreck. now the lowest point came when the president was asked to condemn white supremacy. sure, he said, but then gave support to the so-called proud boys.
6:41 am
>> i would say almost everything i see is from the left wing not from the right wing. >> what are you saying -- >> i'm willing to do anything -- >> then do it, sir. >> say it. >> you want to call them -- what do you want to call them? >> white supremacists -- >> proud boys, stand back and stand by but i'll tell you what, somebody has to do something about antifa and the left because this is not a right wing problem. >> now on fox news this morning -- fox news -- they said donald trump blew the biggest layup in the history of debates by not condemning white supremacists. i don't know if he didn't hear it, but he's got to clarify it right away. that's like asking are you against evil? why the president didn't just knock it out of the park, i'm not sure. the next debate may be more presidential because the presidential candidates are not going to be there. kamala harris will debate mike
6:42 am
pence a week from today. everybody is talking about this on twitter. i'm sure you are as well. let's join the conversation. give me your reaction and find me on twitter @scottmcgrew. >> thanks, scott. the election is 34 days away. you can plan your vote ahead by going to nbcbayarea.com. of course we're also posting ballot drop-off locations as well. it is 6:49. os hot continuing. yeah, we've seen that as well as all the fires burning across the state. we look at all the fires we have going on and producing a high amount of smoke and also burning a record amount of acreage. cal fire posted this yesterday showing that this year we've been breaking all kinds of records and so far with 8,155
6:43 am
fires we've burned more than 3.8 million acres across the state. it's just unbelievable when you go back and average it out. formally we get 739,000 acres burned and we haven't even made it through the end of our wildfire season so that's of high concern as the hot temperatures continue. we're looking at highs reaching up to 97 in concord 99 in livermore. 88 in morgan hill. san francisco will drop back to the low 70s. oakland will reach 82 degrees. looking at our overall weather pattern there's a new system moving through the gulf of alaska and approaching parts of canada and as it moves farther to the north increasing winds which will improve our air quality slightly but still this air quality air alert continues through the end of the week and heavy smoke
6:44 am
and unhealthy air quality for the north bay and inland east bay today. it's staying hot. our temperatures increase reaching over 100 degrees in some of our inland spots. it's still going to be hot on friday. we'll see a slight drop in temperatures from friday -- from saturday into the weekend as well as early next week. and, mike, you've been tracking the commute. anything new coming up? just typical trends, kari. circling 101 northbound. we start to see that build again. upper 50s from 680 to oakland road. still slow through livermore and still we have that vehicle blocking part of your lanes.
6:45 am
a little slowing there and past it on the nimitz on either side of the san mateo bridge. the rest of the commute builds to the san rafael bridge. we've had metering lights on. we see movements. traffic volume starting a tiny bit. back to you. >> thanks. happening now for you a race in space to fix a leak. the international space station is leaking air but not dangerous. the astronauts onboard are working to patch the problem. it's 6:52. up next on "today in the bay" a quick look at our top stories including the very latest on the update on the glass fire tearing through the north bay. we'll have a live report on the overnight firefight. you're watching "today in the bay."

6:49 am
of this community are being asked to leave. also to help the firefighters so they're able to solely focus on that fight and not have to deal with any rescue missions. now at this point when neighbors return they'll find some of their community landmarks have been damaged. you mentioned a winery yesterday. another business has been damaged along with some of the land throughout this community. so really a lot of uncertainty as firefighters come throughout the bay area, make their way to this area to fight the fire. you can see smoke filled air and along some of these roads still a lot of hot spots. still a very dangerous situation here in calistoga. i'm cierra johnson live. back to you. now to the coronavirus. san francisco is now the first county in the bay area to get ad from the state restrictions
