and all of this happening, of course, because of coronavirus it's an unprecedented cutback. disney announcing plans to lay off 28,000 workers most of them had already been on furlough for the last six months in a message to employees obtained by nbc news, disney's park chairman writing in part, as heart breaking as it is to take this action, this is the only feasible option we have in light of the prolonged impact of covid-19 on our business analysts estimate an 80% drop in tourists at disney world compared to last year. disneyland in california still not open the company's most recent earnings report shows the covid impact has cost disney nearly $5 billion. the pandemic has forced theme parks around the world to close. seaworld and legoland now operating with limited capacity. universal orlando resort, part of our parent company nbc universal has also laid off an

back in school this week joined half a million new york city students returning for in-person classes. people are getting closer together breathing the same air inside this morning we show you how air circulates indoors and why you should limit your time inside public spaces. also what to do to cut your risk of contracting coronavirus back to class, back to the gym, and the return of indoor dining. as temperatures drop and americans head inside, there's growing concern about an increase in covid-19 cases >> i am concerned when i see things starting to move indoors. that becomes more compelling when you get into the fall and winter season. >> reporter: in this simulation, watch how droplets from a sneeze linger in a population enough virus could be in this cloud to get someone sick even five minutes after the sneeze. but add in a ventilation system

and the particles thin out quickly. within a minute, they get sucked up by the air intake vent in the ceiling. but some are still blown back down the best scenario, open windows and doors for fresh air. the outside air dilutes the droplets within two minutes, there's a much lower concentration of virus inside making it less infectious our "today" show graphics team worked to make these simulations. he runs the center for computational fluid dynamics at george mason university. when people watch this simulation, what do they need to know about air flow and how important it is indoors? >> from video detection, increases with the time that particles remain in the room and it also increases with the number of particles you inhale ventilation is important >> reporter: this may also apply when you're dining indoors, working out, or at the office.

shelly miller an expert in indoor air quality at university of colorado boulder says you can look around to see if an indoor public space is safe >> look for open windows that would be a good sign there's outside air coming indoors. you also want to see whether you're feeling hot or it smells kind of stuffy because that will indicate to you there's actually not enough outside air. make sure that people are wearing masks and then it's not super crowded. >> reporter: to show how a mask makes a difference in a public space, let's go to our simulation remember the sneeze without a mask it creates a dense cloud that lingers in the room. here's what it looks like with the mask fewer particles escape into the air and they're more dilute. less likely to make others sick. some public spaces especially classrooms may have older ventilation systems or windows that don't open. in those cases, a room air cleaner like this could be helpful. it recycles and filters the air in the room. before you buy, be sure to check
