right now we want to get a look at what we can expect from that forecast today. >> reporter: well, we do still have the red flag warning that will be in effect as we go into later today an danger a big con as we can see the gusty winds continuing and low humidity at least until this afternoon. a heat advisory through 8:00 through much of the bay area. temperatures heading to the mid-80s, oakland, some mid-90s for the south bay, and up to 101 degrees for the inland east bay. i'm tracking all of this, of course, with a look ahead to the week. more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at that commute as you get ready to head out the door. we're tracking all of this, the closures in the fire zone, the glass fire. looking at the map we'll zoom into overnight during the 1:00 hour a deadly crash in petaluma

that closes highway 101. one person has died and another with major injuries closing the southbound side at north petaluma boulevard. i think you can get on lakeville street that will get you back on to southbound 101. that takes you on the western side of the outlet malls over there to give you a reference. we don't have a reopen time so, of course, we'll track that. the rest of the bay is free and clear. back to you. thank you very much. well, breaking news president trump says he and the first lady have tested positive for covid-19. we have a live look at the white house this morning. the president and first lady say they are quarantining there. mr. trump confirmed the news on twitter adding in part, quote, we will get through this together. the first lady tweeted a short time later saying, quote, we are feeling good, and i have postponed all upcoming

engagements. the news comes hours after we learn one of the president's top aides, hope hicks, tested positive for coronavirus. this is a list of over 20 people who may have been in contact with hicks in the 48 hours when she may have been contagious with covid-19. the list includes rudy giuliani, ivanka trump, jared kushner and others. the network of people who are possibly infected is almost unlimited. >> but hope hicks may be actually a super spreader, walking around in close proximity while she was sick -- if she had symptoms yesterday or the day before yesterday and has tested positive, she could have for the last two weeks before that been actually infected and asymptomatic but able to spread the coronavirus. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us now live with what we're hearing from mike pompeo.
4:34 am
>> reporter: good morning to you, laura. secretary of state mike pompeo spoke to reporters on a flight to croatia. he says that he and his wife susan were tested this morning for covid-19 and both came back negative. he says that they are praying for the president and the first lady. >> we're praying for the president and the first lady that they'll have a speedy recovery. i'm sorry, i'm trying to speak up a little bit. that they'll have a speedy recovery. we're taking this obviously very seriously and will do everything we can to keep everyone safe including you all. >> we all know that covid-19 can be anything from very minor to something so severe that you can't do anything. this is what we don't know and we won't know until we actually see the president. we don't know when we're going to see the president. we know there have been many times already during this administration when we haven't exactly been told everything. by the way, all you have to do is go back to the reagan

4:38 am
67 degrees. and as we go into today our highs will reach once again back into the 90s for the south bay and down to the south county where it's 98 degrees. 98 in livermore. 94 today in napa. so i'll be watching that as well as that fire danger throughout the day. mike, right now how is it looking getting out the door? kari, overall things are smooth. we do have this deadly crash that happened overnight. there was a crash, a car fire closing southbound 101 what happened as a result in petaluma. as we look southbound 101 everything is closed. you're forced off the freeway at petaluma taking you past the outlets and on surface streets. getting back on around lakeville highway, lakeville street depending on what side of highway 101 you are. sounds like about 5:00 they're hoping investigators do arrive and then after that likely another half hour until they reopen. we'll follow that. the fire zone to the north of that crash circled over on the

4:42 am
right now at 4:41, we continue to watch the weather conditions around the glass fire and we are seeing a morning start at 65 degrees. so far a pretty calm wind and some relatively higher humidity compared to yesterday. we'll be watching this because it determines how fast that fire spreads and a look ahead to our weekend forecast coming up. that's one big north bay concern right now. i have a north bay concern for that deadly crash and closure for southbound highway 1 that's going on through petaluma, petaluma boulevard is your alternate. the fire zone outlined here as well as the bay bridge. the bay bridge is clear but we do have oakland road slowing you down 880 to 23rd. and good morning. i'm rahel solomon at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open lower. dow futures off about 420 off

the news the president and first lady have tested positive for covid-19. safe havens such as the dollar, japanese yen moved higher on the news. investors tend to flock to those during times of uncertainty. the president's diagnosis could cause a new wave of volatility as it may hurt his ability to campaign a month before the election. the full implications, however, are still unclear and would depend largely on his health and the response by voters. investors had already been on edge before this news, and that was on signs that a new fiscal stimulus package is stalled in washington. they're also awaiting the monthly jobs report in less than an hour at 8:30 eastern. for a new read on the economy, hiring is likely to have increased by 800,000 jobs in september, but that's a slowdown from august. markets are also concerned about rising virus cases in the u.s. and europe with the majority now becoming the first major global

and here we go on this friday morning for you, a live look out at downtown san jose, well, you can see not much in the background there because the air quality, smoke still lingering around the bay area. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect from this forecast today and, of course, kari, i'm hoping clearer skies. i know that's not necessarily the case. but it is friday. >> not today. but, you know, we will eventually have clear air again but just once again not today. as we take a look at this view it shows us the upper air pollution and all of the smoke that's been over the bay area, the bright white indicates where we are seeing the thickest of the smoke and so it's right over northern california, and so it hasn't really moved over the past day or so. so our air quality once again remaining a big issue for us, very unhealthy in parts of the
4:48 am
north bay. of course as the glass fire continues to burn and it's putting so much of the smoke and just think about all the things that are burning right now being forced into the air and then we'll also have unhealthy air quality for all of the rest of the bay area as we are not going to see many changes here. let's talk about the humidity because it's so important in how fast these fires will spread. we know that we have the red flag warning continuing for today and as we go into the afternoon relative humidity levels stay very low. looking at anything below 30% is critically dry. we have that but a slight increase as we go into tonight and as far as the wind speeds and wind direction we are seeing some of those higher winds in the upper elevations while the valleys are not experiencing much in the way of any high wind gusts. as we go into the afternoon a northwesterly wind is going to continue to bring in some very dry conditions and so winds only at about 15 to possibly 20 miles
4:49 am
per hour that will increase later this evening. here we are at 5:30 and we're seeing those winds picking up to about 25 miles per hour and then gradually starting to calm down tonight as well as tomorrow but a northerly wind will keep that smoke moving into the bay area. a look at the overall view of the weather pattern we are seeing the storm system approaching the pacific northwest moving through canada and that's the reason our winds are picking up quite a bit. and then as we go into next week we'll continue to watch a weakening tropical system. it's going to take a while but as it works its way across the parts of the pacific may increase our chances of some rain to the end of next week but we're in right now with this heat and very dry conditions today still looking at highs in the upper 90s. upper 80s and mid-80s by sunday. then look at the temperature trend for the end of next week. much cooler air coming in and
4:50 am
hopefully much better air quality, but we're also going to see our temperatures in san francisco warm today but coming down. more updates to come. mike, what's the update on the commute? kari, we'll start with the north bay where you can see really all this cluster of orange closure signs. that's the fire zone, angwin, we've talked about that. we continue to follow this. also in the north bay overnight is big news, the deadly crash rash and the investigation continues to close southbound 101 where traffic is diverted off the freeway at petaluma boulevard north. that takes you south. then you can get back on the freeway south at lakeville street. i believe the on ramp at washington is still closed for that investigation. now the investigators should arrive about now and then we don't know, wait for an update to see how long they're going to keep that closed and still have the closure north 880 at 23rd.
4:51 am
most of the lanes closed, one is open for the construction crew that will clear at 6:00. the rest is clear around the bay. back to you. all right. you know about this, mike. 880 from oakland to milpitas is getting a new addition. those express lanes will open today. solo drivers looking to use the new express lane must have that fastrak responder so they can pay the mandatory toll. car-poolers of three or more can ride free only if they have a fastrak flex tag. new for you that morning some elementary schools will be able to reopen for in-person instruction. they can return to class on october 13th. each school district will make the decision whether to return to in-person instruction. however, those schools are not required to reopen if they are not ready. schools must post a reopening plan on its website and it's not just schools we're talking about. restrictions are being lifted for several other sectors in

new health campaign to move up into the orange or the moderate tier. turn sacramento orange. they say that pushes to move up would help in two ways. first, a better handle on covid cases before thanksgiving and christmas when families will start getting together and to help the economy and struggling businesses reopen. if sacramento county moves into the orange tier that would mean stores, museums, zoos, can all open up to 50% capacity. gyms can increase to 25% capacity and bars can reopen outdoors. for covid reasons the a's are playing the next round of the playoffs at dodger stadium not against the dodgers, of course, but the astros as part of the baseball bubble. yesterday the a's wrapped things up at the coliseum. chad pender actually capped a comeback with a two-run single and the a's eliminate the white sox winning 6-4.
