tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  October 2, 2020 5:00am-6:00am PDT

5:00 am
right now at 5:00, president trump and first lady melania trump both testing positive for covid-19, quarantining at the white house. >> and that news came late last night. the president announcing a top aide, hope hicks, was infected with the virus. it is a friday morning for you. thank you for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. a check of the forecast, the smoky conditions, high temperatures continuing? our upper elevations as we deal
5:01 am
with high winds and low humidity. the areas shaded in red included in that red flag warning until 6:00 this evening as those winds continue to gust. as we start out this morning some mild temperatures but very smoky and it's going to be another smoky and a hot day. we'll have more on this as well as a look ahead to the weekend. mike, what's the update on the morning commute. we continue to follow the fire zone and the evacuations, stay away from those areas marking the top of your map. the latest traffic issue southbound 101 continues with the closure into petaluma at north petaluma north because of the deadly crash. after that they have to do the investigation. north 880, that will take a while. another hour until they clear
5:02 am
those lanes to 23rd. we are down to one lane which we know to expect. marcus? thanks, mike. back to that breaking news from overnight president trump and the first lady bothiepotts, wha for the president, the country and the campaign. tracie? >> reporter: hey, good morning, marcus. let's start with the breaking news we have at this hour. we just learned that vice president pence and his wife tested negative. that was a concern. he's next in line if the president becomes incapacitated but also he was exposed to the same staffer and to the president earlier this week. so he's negative but the president is positive and in quarantine as we speak in the middle of a heated election. >> i want to say the end of the pandemic is in sight. >> reporter: president trump's
5:03 am
final public appearance before announcing to the world via twitter that he and first lady melania trump have tested positive for covid-19 adding we will begin our quarantine and recovery process immedia presid anyone can get it and that's what's so disturbing. >> reporter: the white house physician confirming the president and mrs. trump are feeling well and will quarantine at the white house. a senior administration official says he'll work from the white house residence. the news came shortly after we learned that hope hicks, one of the president's top aides, tested positive. >> she has been with the president throughout her time at the white house not to mention in the past few days, so that will give you some sense of why the president is taking this so seriously. >> reporter: she began having symptoms wednesday which means she could have been contagious earlier. >> we spent a lot of time with hope and others.
5:04 am
we'll see what happens. >> reporter: several officials, campaign staffers and trump family members have been in contact with hicks in recent days. she was seen traveling on air force one without a mask. >> this is a close environment. everyone on the flight 14 days quarantine regardless of what your test shows. >> reporter: safety protocols are in place. there are concerns about democratic nominee joe biden who stood six feet away from the president for an hour and a half at tuesday's debate. the president of the united states now infected with coronavirus and unable to campaign in person for the next two weeks with the election now just over a month away. so president's trump in orlando canceled and questions have arisen, literally, about the next presidential debate. it's supposed to happen october 15th. that's within the president's
5:05 am
quarantine window. >> that's the chatter i've seen online, tracie. thank you. there's a lot to unpack here. we want to bring in "today in the bay's" scott mcgrew. you follow politics for us every morning on "today in the bay." >> i dodeed. we wish the very best to the president and the first lady, wish him a speedy recovery. practical matters do require us to talk more about mike pence, as tracie just reported, we got the word that pence has tested negative. he is okay. his most recent appearance was on wednesday. the vice president sent well wishes to the first family. no doubt in a personal way but sent out a tweet, and this really shows how important twitter is to the administration, reassuring the president and people via twitter, karen and i send our love and prayers. we join millions across america praying for their full and swift
5:06 am
recovery. there are structures in place should president trump fall very ill. we've talked about the 25th amendment in a different context. but it allows the president to temporarily hand over power to the vice president if he wishes to. president george w. bush did it twice, handed power over to dick cheney temporarily as he underwent two medical procedures and anyone and george w. bush taking temporary control after president ronald reagan was shot by john hinckley in 1981. vice president george bush assumed the power of the presidency while reagan was in surgery. now it should be reassuring to know world leaders have had and recovered from covid-19 in the past. brazilian president bolsonaro and british prime minister johnson both came down with covid. johnson was really ill.
5:07 am
he was hospitalized and he, himself, said it could have gone either way. president trump is significantly older than johnson. johnson 56. trump is nearly 20 years older. as tracie mentioned the next presidential debate is scheduled 13 days from now. the quarantine is 14 days. we do expect the next vice presidential debate coming this wednesday will still be on, though. the white house is probably taking vice president pence's health extremely seriously. there's also the question of early voting. remember for many people the election is already over. they cast their vote. we don't have historical reference on this one at least none that i can think of of a president quarantined leading up to the election. woodrow wilson got the flu, the spanish flu, in, what, 1919, and he was really sick as well. it was not near the election. this is very important and i know, marcus and laura, that our government is saying this to our
5:08 am
allies, the president of the united states is donald trump. he is in full control, he's at the white house feeling fine. he says he'll work from quarters and our leadership remains uninterrupted. >> it will be one to watch. nbc news will break in right here just as they did overnight. much more live team coverage on president trump's test results. it starts at 7:00 a.m. right after "today in the bay." our other top story, firefighters in wine country facing very challenging conditions as they fight the glass fire overnight. homes still threatened and new evacuation orders in place including all areas of napa county north of calistoga between highway 128, the sonoma county line and highway 29. so far the glass fire has burned nearly 59,000 acres. it is just 5% contained. exhausted firefighters are truly being tested right now. six days into battling the fire,
5:09 am
winds have returned making that fight so much more difficult. and, laura, with the firefight far from over evacuees are on edge, many staying in hotels. those rooms hard to get. debbie elliott is with her dogs and meadowood ound.urant. she is told her home is okay but she is preparing for the worst. >> everything is okay for the moment. things can change in the other direction any minute. you never know. >> the parking lot is filled with families isolating in their cars and picking up food. napa county officials say they have helped connect more than 1,700 people to hotel rooms. now they are awaiting a list for assistance as the county turns to the state for help. and as we mentioned the firefighters are up against such a tough battle and the weather not cooperating.
5:10 am
how are we looking wind wise? we have the red flag advisory. yeah, and so that continues until 6:00 today. we are expecting our winds to increase for this afternoon. right now we are seeing the smoke settling in across the bay area. so smoky yesterday, we're expecting more of the same today with unhealthy air quality especially in the north bay in the vicinity of those fires. elsewhere across the bay area you do want to limit your time outside as we continue to track some of the biggest fires we've ever had in history. we're going to talk more about this coming up in a few minutes. let's head over to you, mike, right now for an update on the commute. kari, we start also in the north bay with a deadly crash and closure for highway 101. i just learned they are starting to prepare to move those cars. that's good news but highway 101 closed at pell ltaluma boulevar. a deadly crash overnight there. the closures to the north,
5:11 am
highways 129. slowing through oakland continues northbound 880 for that construction and the rest of the bay is clear. back to you. thank you very much, mike. 5:10 right now. this morning our team is staying on top of the breaking news out of the white house. the president testing positive for coronavirus. next on "today in the bay," how the stock market is already starting to respond to the news of his positive results. plus, amazon revealing just how many of its employees across the country have gotten the virus and the steps the company says it is now take to go ping t future outbreaks. >> reporter: if you're looking for a distraction, the 49ers are playing at home in prime time, but the big question is, is jimmy g. going to play? i'm kris sanchez. i have that answer coming up.
5:12 am
5:13 am
5:14 am
right now it's 5:14. our heat advisory continues today until this evening due to the hot temperatures we'll have once again today. the only area excluded the immediate coastline. we'll talk more about this and our weekend slight cooldown in the forecast coming up. we follow this fire zone east of 101. the big problem this morning is the deadly crash closing highway
5:15 am
101 south of there in through petaluma. petaluma boulevard is where the closure is. we'll talk about the reroute coming up. good morning to you if you are just waking up on this friday morning the president of the united states has been diagnosed with covid-19. as has the first lady. the president is working from quarters as he undergoes a 14-day quarantine. obviously the news has shaken the world markets as we look at the futures. the best the traders make on the direction of the open ahead at 6:30 california time. wall street does not like instability or uncertainty. now what wall street would like to see if we can talk business here for a minute is a new the house has passed another one, passed one long ago in may, another one last night. this is in the $2 billion range. the democrat-run house is daring
5:16 am
republicans in the senate to strike it down, though it may not come to a vote at all. treasury secretary mnuchin representing both the senate republicans and the white house had been negotiating with speaker pelosi but those talks did not result in a compromise. amazon says nearly 20,000 of its workers tested positive for covid-19 over the course of the pandemic so far. it's the first time the company has given us any numbers. also points out between amazon and whole foods it has more than 1.3 million workers. 20,000 infections is in amazon's estimates a lower infection rate than the general population. it is a good reminder -- i know we say this a lot -- we are nowhere near done if estimates are right and the vaccine is available maybe by late second quar we're not even at the halfway necessarily. one last bit of news, and
5:17 am
normally that would be a headline for me, we get to find out how many jobs were added with the big jobs report. that comes up at 5:30 and i'll have the live full report on that coming up in our next business segment in the next hour. marcus? >> looking forward to that, scott. thanks. 5:16 this morning. something to look forward to this weekend, the 49ers are playing in prime time at home on sunday. while you can't watch in person, you can watch it on nbc bay area. there is something about that music. wondering as well who will be in the lineup. let's check in with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez this morning live from levi's stadium. chris, what do you know about jimmy g? >> reporter: i wish i had a crystal ball, that's for sure. i would be heading to vegas. everybody in the faithful family is hoping that jimmy g's ankle will be good to go sunday because he makes watching a lot
5:18 am
more fun. even if his back up mullens did pull out a win against the giants the last time they took the field. garoppolo has been healing from a high ankle sprain since week plays but also stay away from the eagles defense looking to bring him down, he'll be in and his last practice to prove that is this afternoon. >> he can run around and protect himself, make throws. anytime we're dealing with an ankle you might feel all right standing there. can you move around and get into awkward positions? that's what we would have to see. >> reporter: all right. you know who is coming back? george kittle. he made it back to practice at full speed this week and says that playing in prime time adds extra excitement especially at home. he says even if the fans aren't here in person he will know that they are there. and it'll be good to have kittle back because it's only week four
5:19 am
and look at what other 49ers are still nursing injuries. there are certainly covid concerns on top of game-related injuries. just yesterday the nfl postponed the steelers/titans game after a titans team member and a member of the personnel team tested positive for coronavirus. so that is on hold indefinitely but we do know that the 49ers say they are serious about wearing that protective gear so that they don't have any risk of infection as they lower their risk. coronavirus and covid-19 still going to be on the minds of a lot of people as we try to distract ourselves a little bit this sunday. at levi's stadium, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." all right. well, as you all stay in, kris mentioned, you can watch the game here on nbc bay area sunday night at 5:00. be sure to join us before the game for our preshow starting at 3:00. should be a fun time. a lot of people will be inside enjoying the game and that might
5:20 am
be for good reason because the air quality not so great. is that going to continue throughout the weekend as well? yeah, i wonder if that will be a topic of discussion throughout the game on sunday because the air quality will still be bad and we are also seeing that spare the air alert extended through early next week. so as we take a live look outside in san francisco a smoky start to the day and, of course, we know why it's so smoky. cal fire posted this information, and they post a lot of really good statistics showing the top 20 wildfires and the acreage that has burned and we know that the august complex is beating out all of those other fires by far. before that we had the mendocino complex. this one is at least two times the size of that one. and so, unfortunately, as these fires continue we have the other fires that are in the top six that are also burning this year.
5:21 am
so we are watching the activity and weather conditions near the glass fire that, unfortunately, continues to spread. we do see some more favorable weather conditions. the wind is still high and it's going to heat up again today as the winds increase especially this afternoon. as we go through the wind forecast, the red flag warning continues until later this evening due to the high winds coming out of the north and northwest. look at the wind speed forecast up to 25 miles an hour throughout today and then it gradually starts to calm down but a northerly wind brings in more smoke and still some really hot temperatures reaching into the 90s, even up to 100 degrees. we are going to see a change in the weather pattern as we go into the weekend. more of a westerly wind. we're also tracking what's now hurricane maria, a tropical system that could possibly move into the bay area by next weekend. so we're looking forward to a chance of rain later down the line especially after making it
5:22 am
through all of this it will be a bright spot to look forward to. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking now for the commute? well, kari, despite word of vehicles being prepared for recovery, we're still looking at the closure of southbound highway 101. folks, unfortunately, overnight there was a crash so severe. one person died and another has major injuries including south 101 at petaluma boulevard. you can enter back on the next exit and washington street. the north bay fire zone and oakland construction zone for northbound 880 affecting the nimitz right now and affecting the nimitz south of there, hayward through milpitas. remember, those express lanes they now start charging today. back to you. >> got to get used to that. thanks, mike. it is 5:22. coming up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. refrigerator prepare and paying for parking, some of the cases

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us now with reaction from a local woman who is afraid she might have been exposed during tuesday night's presidential debate. tell us about it, bob. >> reporter: first of all, it's not clear if president trump and first lady were contagious. a san francisco woman who attended the debate, a guest of
5:34 am
joe biden, says she is terrified she might have been exposed after learning of the recent news, this news that the president and the first lady have tested positive for covid-19. her father died of covid-19 blames president trump for not doing enough to contain the virus in this country. in a statement posted by an nbc news reporter on twitter she writes that trump has no regard for human life and criticizes his family for refusing to wear masks as they sat nearby in the auditorium during the debate tuesday night. she writes in part, and yet again donald trump's disregard for science and the value of human lives has jeopardized the lives of americans. the trump family exposed every attendee at the debate -- guests, workers, secret service agents, members of the media and janitors to a deadly virus killed 205,000 americans to date. irresponsible is an understatement. this is criminal. earlier this morning secretary
5:35 am
of state mike pompeo spoke to reporters about the news on a flit to croatia. he said he and his wife susan were tested this morning and were both negative for covid-19. >> we're praying for the president and the first lady that they'll have a speedy recovery. i spoke with the vice president this morning as well. we're taking this very seriously and will do everything to keep everyone safe. >> something so severe that you can't do anything. this is what we don't know and we won't know until we see the president. we don't know when we're going to see the president. we know there have been many times already during this administration we haven't exactly been told everything and go back to the reagan attempted assassination his folks said he's fine. hardly anything wrong and he lay almost near death.
5:36 am
>> reporter: that was nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston. we've learned this morning president trump treasury secretary steve mnuchin has also tested negative. president trump's personal physician said the president's positive covid test result writing he and the first lady are well, will remain home at the white house, and the president will continue to carry out his duties while recovering. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. we want to take a pause on breaking news of the diagnosis and take you back to the breaking news here at home. those wildfires continue to burn destroying everything in their path. those homes are still threatened and new evacuation orders are in place including all the areas of napa county north of calistoga between 128 and sonoma county line as well as highway 29. it is just 5% contained.

5:39 am
are looking at the highest winds. right now we are starting out with temperatures a little bit cooler in the north bay with some mid-50s in napa as well as santa rosa. we do see some mid-60s right now in san jose as we get ready for another hot one, heading up to 94. 95 today in santa rosa and 101 today in antioch. we'll talk about the weekend forecast coming up. mike, what's the update on your traffic alert? at 5:00 we were told a tow truck was there to recover the vehicles. south 101 still closed and no update since person died and another with major injuries. word of a motorcycle and a car fire in the incident reported as well. get back on at washington just past that. that takes you past the outlets. you see the fire zone noted there. we also have the construction
