about five minutes. first, this is video from the front lines of the exhausting wildfire battle continuing in the north bay. cal fire is getting a look at just how destructive the glass hundreds of homes in napa and sonoma counties are destroyed, and the firefight continues to deliver its challenges. today in the bay's jean elle has more from calistoga. >> reporter: cal fire crews positioned trucks on diamond mountain road in calistoga, preparing to put water on flames burning on a steep hillside. cal fire says it's time-consuming work for crews that are stretched thin. >> the narrowness of the roads makes it difficult for the fire apparatus to travel. it makes it difficult for us to establish lines. it just makes the work more intensified. and understand that, if this were the only fire in the state right now, we'd probably have two to three times as many personnel. >> reporter: further south across from the richie creek campground, fire is burning big

welcome back at 7:16 on your saturday morning. foggy, hazy skies over walnut creek, as we remain under a microclimate weather alert because of this unhealthy air quality. meteorologist rob mayeda has your forecast in just a moment. but first, the oldest resort in california was all but wiped out. this is what's left of the white sulphur springs retreat center in st. helena. 17 of the site's 20 buildings were destroyed. the resort first opened back in 1852. it's where san francisco's elite would come for a break from city life. >> back in the day, it was the place in the napa valley to go

the north. 56 degrees currently in san francisco. around walnut creek, we're actually seeing slightly more smoke at 59 degrees. and into san jose, again, it's not fog, it's areas of smoke, at 62 degrees. three locations, the north bay, inland east bay, like walnut creek and san jose, likely to see the worst of the air quality. these are numbers in the red. if you have your favorite air quality app, that would be showing you aqi numbers over 150, north bay, inland, east bay and the santa clara valley. now a closer look hour by hour. you can see on the map the computer simulation based on wind patterns through the day, staying unhealthy across inland locations. but notice as we head towards 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, slightly stronger sea breeze. keep a close eye on santa clara and san jose. things looking a little bit better around 5:00. that, of course, is closer to the kickoff time for the 49ers taking on the eagles. the nfl on nbc bay area this week. coming up, we'll see areas of hazy skies, as anousha

mentioned, but also cooler temperatures by sunday. so, we're hoping for some improving conditions. here's a look at your high temperatures today, ranging from the mid-70s around san francisco, 80s around oakland, and look at san jose down into morgan hill. mid-to-upper 90s in the forecast, so it's going to be a day of hazy skies, bad air quality, and some hot temperatures, though we should begin to see some changes over the next few days. now, very interesting, on the long-range models here, look at this former hurricane. at this point, by monday and tuesday, some of that moisture gets drawn into a weather system moving through the gulf of latz ka. now, that's a critical component, because it could bring in extra moisture. and notice as we get towards thursday and friday, some of that could actually reach us here in the bay area and northern california. it's got all of the meteorologists around the bay area and northern california excited because it could not only bring some cooler temperatures, better air quality because those southwest winds and west winds picking up, but the potential is there late next week, we could be talking about some rainfall. so, as we move through the next

they were always there, about the same time we were on thursdays. >> reporter: mike, who served in the coast guard in the early '60s, says one table eventually approached the other and asked if they served. the two groups quickly became one, bonding over shared military experiences, no matter when, where, or in which branch they served. like what they ate, for example. >> well, that's one thing we all have in common, because if you're in service, you sure as heck had spam for breakfast. >> well over 350 spam cans per minute are dispatched -- >> reporter: spam, made by minnesota-based hormel foods, was a staple of military rations for decades. and so, one day, when a member of the group showed up with a can of spam, they took a picture. mike sent it to hormel, thinking they might find their story interesting. he was right. >> we immediately jumped on this opportunity to talk to them. >> reporter: jeff baker is the vice president at hormel.

>> it was a cool enough letter, an inspiring enough letter that the story deserved to be told. >> reporter: so, hormel sent a crew to los altos to create a video about the group, but that's not all. they wanted to see this story of veterans connecting repeated. hormel is now approaching restaurants across the country, asking them to establish tables of honor in chuck's name, reserved for vets once a week to drop in and connect with others. >> what a great idea, to put a table together where people can come and share their stories and share their experiences, make new relationships. or renew old relationships. >> reporter: just like indoor dining, covid has put a slight hold on hormel's rollout of the table. >> oh, wow. >> reporter: but they are committed to finishing what they started, just like the men they are honoring.ea news." >> oh, man. i love that!
