>> two episodes of transient drops in his oxygen saturation. >> reporter: president trump's blood oxygen level dropped friday and saturday and his fever on friday was described as high the president, in addition to taking remdesivir and experimental antibody cocktail now receiving a steroid for severely ill patients called dexamethasone. >> we decided in this case that the potential benefits early on in the course outweighed any potential risks at this time. >> reporter: conley did not say whether the president's lungs showed covid-related effects, including pneumonia. his own chief of staff framing the president's staff on friday in more troubling terms. >> we were real concerned with that he had a fever and his blood oxygen level had dropped rapidly. >> reporter: after dr. conley initially provide an intentionally rosy picture of the president's condition. >> i was trying to reflect the upbeat attitude that the team, the president, his course of illness has had. i didn't want to give any information that might steer the course of illness in another

direction. and in doing so, you know, it came off that we were trying to hide something, which wasn't necessarily true. >> reporter: having had conversations with multiple white house officials over the course of this weekend, they've been complaining privately about the lack of information they say they received about that outbreak that may have taken place on the very campus where they work. and now, several days after that debate where it took place, that presidential debate where members of the presidential family were seen not wearing masks, even though they were mandated to do so. it appears some members of the president's family has learned a lesson daily mail.com posting this video that shows jared kushner and ivanka trump on a run wearing masks. savannah, hoda >> peter thank you very much more on the president's surprise visit outside walter reed concerns are being raised about the health and safety of secret service members inside his vehicle.

nbc's tom costello joins us with that part of the story tom, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you white house says that this trip was, in fact, approved by the president's own doctors. top physicians we've talked to, including one of them here at walter reed, who also teaches at gw, says in effect that by pulling this, quote, political stunt, he has put his own secret service detail and, by extension, their families' lives, at risk could president trump's brief drive-by outside walter reed have jeopardized the health of those inside his vehicle, including secret service agents? the photo-op intended to surprise supporters gathered outside of the military hospital. >> they've been out there for a long time. they've got trump flags and they love our country. >> the move also defies cdc guidelines that state transport and movement of a patient outside of their room should be limited to medically essential purposes the president, wearing what appeared to be a cloth mask with at least two secret service agents in their own protective gear. >> they were in this vehicle

that is tightly sealed for security reasons but almost certainly didn't have the kind of air circulation that would keep it safer for all of them. >> reporter: overnight the white house released a statement saying appropriate precautions were taken in the execution of this movement to protect the president and all those supporting it, including ppe the movement, it says, was cleared by the medical team as safe to do. >> in a very safe way i drove by and said hi. we know that secret service always takes great care of their agents and there have always an extra layer of protection. >> reporter: the last-minute trip drawing backlash for potentially exposing secret service member. >> no contact tracing needed for this you could have anticipated the quarantine and prescribed it beforehand all these agents need to go into a 14-day quarantine. >> reporter: meanwhile at the white house, first lady melania trump committed to remaining in isolation. on saturday, a white house official told nbc news that the

first lady would not visit her husband at walter reed, because it would expose agents to drive her there and the medical staff to walk her up to him. >> actions have consequences there's a second and third order of consequence here where their agents are now exposed and their families could be potentially exposed. so this is greater than just one individual. >> reporter: secret service declining to comment we don't know if those secret service agents are in quarantine importantly, we've seen doctors and nurses in full ppe gear contract covid, some of them even dying the stakes here, savannah, are very high indeed back to you. >> tom, thank you. all right. let's turn to corey lewandowski, former campaign manager, who has been in constant touch with the president, and let's find out how the president is doing.

cory, good morning. when was the last time you talked to the president and how is he doing? corey, can you hear me i think we may have an audio problem. >> the president -- >> there he is. >> i spoke to the president last evening, savannah, and chief meadows this morning about the president's current state of affairs. the chief informed me that the president is doing exceptionally well he could be discharged as early as today or tomorrow but is making great progress. >> how did the president sound to you on saturday when you spoke to him >> he sounded very upbeat, very excited about beating this virus. i had the chance to speak to him for about 15 minutes we talked about how well he is doing. we talked about how well he was feeling, how excited he was to get out of the white house and get back to the business of running our great government. >> did he say anything about we didn't discuss his specific medical care, but i have talked being on oxygen? it's been revealed now that a couple of times his oxygen levels dipped so much that he had to be on supplemental oxygen did he tell you anything about that

>> no. we didn't discuss his specific medical care, but i have talked to him, savannah, thousands of times over the course of the last half decade and sounds exactly like the donald trump i always talked to, upbeat, positive, ready to fight, ready to go out and take this battle on behalf of the american people directly covid is a very, very dangerous disease. he knows that. he has witnessed it firsthand. he's going to beat this. he's ready to get back to fighting for the american people. >> you mentioned how deadly and dangerous covid is it certainly is. yet yesterday where the president goes out from his hospital bed and gets into an suv, which of course is sealed for his own protection, bringing with him two secret service agents so you have two secret service agents in close quarters with a patient who has a hot covid diagnosis. why did he do that >> you know, the president wanted to thank all the supporters who had been standing out there for days, supporting it's my understanding, savannah, from the information i've

obtained that the detail leader of the secret service and the driver both volunteered for that assignment as you know, they have very, very difficult jobs, but they were not required to do that they both volunteered. and there was a piece of plexiglass, i believe, between the president and the two secret service agents in the vehicle. >> can you think of any good reason to do that trip other than public relations and ego, frankly? >> well, the president wanted to show the supporters that he appreciated them and to show that you can still function with covid-19. look, he is a leader, and he wants to lead. and we have shown it from the great leaders who wanted to show a sign of respect to the people. this is the president out thanking the supporters out there supporting him. >> if he was leading as an example, would he suggest that people with a hot case of covid

go around with just a cloth mask and, you know, do what they consider to be important >> i don't think so. look, this trip was made, i think, i am told, with consultation of his physicians they told him this would not jeopardize him or anybody in that vehicle who have taken exceptional precautions for this this is the advice of the physicians i'm not a physician. i can only tell you what has been relayed to me from the medical team that's taken care of this president, that they authorized this trip they were okay with the trip and the secret service members volunteered to participate in this. >> all right corey, thank you good piece of information to have appreciate your time let's turn now to dr. van gupta and dr. phillips he is and at tending physician at walter reed, and let's talk about this trip, dr. phillips who called it insanity who is also and at tending at walter reed. first thing is first, dr. gupta,

let's talk about the president's condition. it's confusing we heard an anecdotal report from his former campaign manager that he's doing well, they say he could be out as soon as today. at the same time, the doctor says he's on this cocktail of medications that are for very serious patients what are we to make of all of this >> good morning, savannah. the only thing that would make sense based on reports of the president's shortness of breath, low oxygen levels in addition to the interventions they're taking, extraordinary interventions, including experimental therapy, but interventions that i do in the icu that i do for patients in r the icu like remdesivir and dexamethasone that have serious side effects.

you only give them to patients that need them and number two they have serious side effects the fact that he has gotten all of these, either number one he's actually quite sick and shouldn't be discharged any time soon for his own sake or, number two, the doctors aren't practicing evidence-based medicine it's one or the other. i think it's likely number one and he has pneumonia from covid-19. >> can i offer a third option? what if you're the president, head of state and they're willing to practice a little different medicine and maybe have them take some of these serious medicines as a preventive measure that would make sense to a lot of people. is that possible >> it's certainly possible, given that a lot has been done especially with the president's messaging. let me be clear. there is no proof that dexamethasone, remdesivir, especially those two agents, can stave off progression of covid-19 if you're asymptomatic, mild symptoms, neither one of

those medications have proven to stave off a worsening diagnosis. if they were to do that, they would be flying in the blind with no evidence and posing risk to the president's health because remdesivir causes liver damage in some cases and high-dose steroids cause a range of side effects. why put the head of state at an unproven benefit if he doesn't have the need for it, i would never do that to the president of the united states. >> they are talking about being discharged today or tomorrow again. so that is the latest information, but being discharged to the white house is days is the course, could he d not you or me going to our houses, so they do have medical capability. for example, could he continue his course of remdesivir, which would go till tomorrow if five days is the course, could he do that from the white house, given it's not the typical home setting? >> he could, savannah. that would be the first case of that in the history of giving remdesivir, going to home

infusion of that type of medication. i would want him around pulmonologists and infectious disease experts so we could monitor him and making sure he's doing okay, that's number one. number two, there's many cases of patients feeling temporarily better and a few days later actually worsening, or the so-called long haul covid patient, somebody who actually continues to feel shortness of breath and cough and just feeling winded it's unclear how the president is actually doing. when i have seen him, he has interchanged between looking robust and healthy and frankly looking ashen face at times. i'm worried about him. the better part of valor is staying at walter reed and for his doctors to share critical information, what does his lung condition show, so we can understand his current outlook but to what degree was he exposing individuals like the secret service, it would be helpful to understand. >> and now on that topic, i want to go to dr. phillips, who is

affiliated with walter reed as well as georgetown university. now you have had a strong reaction to that image and corey lewandowski said that the secret service agents volunteered for that duty in terms the of public health, how likely is it that they could have contracted covid, having been in that sealed car with the patient? >> good morning and thanks for having me on the reality is that this was a dangerous move there is no medical benefit for this to have taken place it violates cdc guidelines that come from the president's own administration now, it bears discussion that i'm a nonmilitary contractor that works at walter reed as an emergency physician. i'm chief of disaster and operational medicine at gw, my primary employer the reason why the tweets i sent out have garnered so much attention is because i was being honest in the moment you know, i've been on the front lines along with dr. gupta and the rest of our colleagues for the better part of ten months,

trying to keep people safe, not just on an individual level in our hospitals and emergency departments but also out here in the public health realm, trying to give good messages, and it is a back and forth between the medical community and the administration trying to give the right messages to the citizens of america. and beyond the risk that was clearly taking part or the risk that was imparted upon the secret service agents voluntary or not, it sends a message to other people who are sick that it's okay to go out. we're seeing schools try to reopen and we're seeing parents who have sent their kids to school with disease. this is the wrong message to be sending. the only way someone can volunteer for something like this, and do it safely, is through real, informed consent they have to know the real risks of getting into that vehicle and my concern is that they didn't. >> real quickly, because i only have a few seconds left.

you are kind of being an arm chair doc here, but you saw they were in ppe here and medical grade masks they were in and not the president, because he was in a cloth mask. are you concerned they could contract covid-19 in a situation like that? and will they have to quarantine no matter what >> they absolutely must quarantine cdc guidelines are clear if you spend that period of time within six feet of a person requires a mandatory 14-day quarantine. there are no caveats for masks this is not a normal conversation, this is inside of a weapon-proof vehicle with no plexiglass, that i could see -- and i would like to see that verified, and without fully appropriate ppe. one person has a valved mask the president is wearing a cloth mask they're not wearing sealed goggles. there are plenty of failures in that ppe and full ppe still doesn't protect you. numerous doctors and nurses have died on the front lines because of getting exposed despite wearing ppe.

was tested, how specifically he's being treated and who else could have been exposed. >> reporter: critical questions this morn about the testing and the treatment time line on president trump. on thursday, white house official confirms the president took a rapid coronavirus test after he arrived home from a new jersey fund-raiser that came back positive, before the president went on fox news, a detail he did not disclose by then, the president was apparently waiting results from the more conclusive pcr test. >> i just went for a test. we'll see what happens who knows? >> that doesn't explain why the president traveled that afternoon, after being exposed to aide hope hicks who was showing symptoms of the coronavirus and began to quarantine herself tonight before. thursday night into friday the president revealed he was diagnosed and got sicker, faster he spiked a fever and his blood oxygen level dropped doctors gave him supplemental oxygen at the time, white house officials painted a much different picture. >> continues to be not only in

now received information for attendees at thursday's fund-raiser. but in minnesota, where a president held a rally wednesday, health department spokesperson said no one from the white house or republican national committee has reached out. the rnc said the state never asked. and the governor of ohio, where the first presidential debate was held, says he hasn't heard about contact tracing either. >> they've not talked to me about it, no. >> reporter: the white house said necessary notifications have been made now the focus is increasingly turning to what happened in the rose garden last saturday when the president announced his supreme court nominee. at least eight people from that event have now tested positive, including governor chris christie, kellyanne conway and senator mike lee, seen on camera hugging other attendees. it wasn't just outside pictures from an indoor reception show few masks and no social distancing either all together, 11 people linked to the white house or campaign have tested positive, including the president's body man, nick luna, his campaign manager, bill stepien, three senators, lee, thom tillis and ron johnson and two people involved in the president's debate prep, christie and conway. it is at that debate that the president's family appeared without masks. >> the people from cleveland clinic came over and offered them masks and they were waved

away. >> reporter: still a top campaign manager is talking about joe biden and his mask. >> too often he has used the mask as a prop. >> let's go back to this saturday event, i guess it would be nine days ago some are wondering whether that was the super spreader event we know that eight people have tested positive. most of the big announcement was outdoors in the rose garden, but we have images in the indoor reception, and it is so striking, hallie, because we can throw on some tof the pictures, and you can see the little red dot. that shows who subsequently tested positive. as you walk through them, you start to see them mixing and mingling, let's go through the photos, and it's really helped the story. >> it really does, savannah, especially because, listen, i don't see any masks in these photos
