"today in the bay" starts right now. and a good tuesday morning
4:31 am
to you. thank you for joining us. i'm marcus washington. we'll have a look at that commute coming up in just a bit. first let's start out with the forecast. it's a terrific tuesday, kari. how is it looking out there for us? it looks pretty terrific today. it's going to be a little bit cooler as we take a live look outside in san jose. we're starting out all clear here and our temperatures in the upper 50s will lead into some upper 70s by lunch time if you're planning on heading outside. we are going to see some of our high temperatures in the low 80s for the south bay but some upper 80s for the south county and we'll see a few spots still reaching into the 90s today. i'll talk more about this and also a chance of rain in the forecast for the weekend coming up in a few minutes. how is it looking for the early morning commute, mike? kari, it's early, like you said, so fewer cars. there's one problem, though, i see slowing in oakland. in comparison to the rest of the bay, you'll have the green
4:32 am
sensors, which we do. a little bit of slowing. a tiny bit out of the altamont. it is a terrific tuesday so far. as we get to 880 and the coliseum southbound side slows. not for construction. it's south of there. towards 66 we still have one lane blocked by a crash. minor injuries are reported. we may have two crashes going on trying to get vehicles to the shoulder so there is slowing as you're coming over the high rise at high street and then clear by the time you pass the coliseum. everything else is smooth in that direction. the opposite direction everything is clear now. much less fog than yesterday. back to you. >> thanks, mike. well, president trump is back at the white house after being discharged from walter reed hospital after being treated for covid-19. this comes hours after his doctors warned that they won't know for a week whether he's recovered from the virus. marine one landed at the white house last night. the president leaving the helicopter wearing a mask, but reappears on the balcony taking his mask off addressing the american public in a video tweet. >> and now i'm better and maybe
4:33 am
i'm immune, i don't know, but don't let it dominate your lives. get out there, be careful. >> even though doctors say he's clear to go home, questions remain about the scope of the outbreak inside the white house. and we're also learning that a prominent southern california pastor has announced that he has tested positive for the covid-19 virus after attending a rose garden event. pastor greg lurie is in riverside and attended a prayer march with vice president pence and attended a rose garden ceremony announcing the president's supreme court nominee. multiple people within the president's inner circle who attended the rose garden indoor/outdoor event have also tested positive. press secretary kayleigh mcenany and two of her top assistants join the list of several high-profile staffers testing positive. coming up for you today live from the white house with the

latest on the president's recovery as well as reaction to the president leaving walter reed while still infected with the virus. "today" begins at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." well, the south bay's improving covid numbers could clear the way for indoor dining. the state may know by today whether santa clara county will graduate from the red to orange tier. if so those changes could take effect in one week. the biggest change would be indoor dining and public gatherings. the county announced dining and gathering would be capped. that means 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is lower. san francisco has already done that. >> san francisco is taking a similar approach where indoor dining and indoor gatherings for church and indoor movie theaters are also at the red tier level. >> if covid cases spike again as they did from june to july the county will refer to outside

dining and other previous restrictions. developing in the north day, evacuation orders are being lifted. downtown st. helena is still quiet but will likely come back to life. crews continue to make progress. this is a view from mt. st. helena. still smoky but far less than we've been seeing. containment is up to 41%. here is "today in the bay" with more. >> reporter: some glass of wine and some company after evacuating eight days ago with flames fast approaching, he just got back home a few hours ago. >> it's a relief, i guess. i miss working here for the harvest. being back in town is really great and having a place to stay. definitely a blessing. >> reporter: the wall of flames is nowhere to be seen but the glow of flames in the night sky. >> a lot of the reasons we keep
4:36 am
residents out of the area even after the fire burned through the situation is unsafe. we may have trees unsafe to be around, still have hot spots, and we want to make sure we can ensure the safety of all the residents. >> reporter: with the evacuation order lifted here in st. helena people are wondering when the glass fire may be fully contained. no word on that yet. firefighters tell us things are trending in the right direction and the cooler, calmer weather is helping. joan and lindsay enjoying this perfect evening together. joan never evacuated. >> i didn't want to leave my home because it's my sanctuary. if i would have seen the flames, i would have gone. when you see the flames, out of here, joan. >> reporter: lindsay saw the orange sky last sunday and knew it was time to go. >> my house is still smoky inside. coming home is great. she was here. >> reporter: a lot of reasons to be grateful for joan and
4:37 am
lindsay, a friendship, a home still standing, and more. >> we're grateful to be alive, aren't we? >> yes, we are am. >> reporter: terry mcsweeney, "today in the bay." and we heard terry say cooler and calmer which will help with the firefight. yeah, we've seen some of the smoke mixing out as well. the view of the upper levels of the atmosphere and it shows the smoke pollution we are seeing. it's still over parts of california but has been pushed to the north and east as we get a look at the weather conditions around the glass fire. we've seen temperatures this morning coming back to the mid-50s and also humidity levels at about 74% with a calm wind and then you can see the perimeter of the glass fire and how much has burned in those areas so we'll continue to monitor the weather in these spots as it looks good not only for today but the next several days and we'll be monitoring for a chance of rain. i'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up in a few

minutes. how is it looking for the early morning commute, mike? kari, it's slow in oakland because of a crash but better news, first of all, just minor injuries. only minor injuries and it sounds like everything is now off to the shoulder. there were perhaps two crashes we're showing you on the map, south 880 just around 66. that's the overcrossing right by the coliseum and the arena. a smooth drive now should start recovery from just before the high rise heading down out of the downtown oakland area heading up in toward the bay bridge no problem and the rest of the bay. even the altamont pass, we talked about a little bit of slowing. it's mild slowing down toward about 50, 55 probably at the worst. back to you. thanks, mike. 4:38 and a showdown is brewing over the president's supreme court nominee. still ahead for you here on "today in the bay," when the next phase of the process is set to start on capitol hill. plus, work to go prevent

4:48 am
and concord. 79 in palo alto while san francisco will be in the upper 60s and 86 today in napa so we are looking at some milder weather but also as we track the air quality it has seen major improvements recently especially for areas that are away from the north bay. in the north bay, of course, the glass fire still going we are going to have some unhealthy air quality today and then much more of a westerly wind picking up. we'll take the smoke over to much of the central valley and away from the north bay. so we're still looking at, at times, smoke drifting in but clearing for the south bay as well as the coast. watching a couple weather systems here we have a weakening hurricane that was marie that is well off to the south and west of here. but then there's also another low that's out in the pacific and both of these coming together may possibly bring an enhanced chance of some rainfall starting on friday and then another chance on saturday as
4:49 am
the storm system moves to our north. now we've seen the computer models kind of going back and forth indicating where we'll see that rain, and it may be just a little bit to the north. where it's more certain for parts of the gulf coast as we continue to track now category 2 hurricane delta expected to move into the gulf as we go into the next several days. this is something we'll be watching for louisiana once again if they could get more active weather. we are also looking at some big changes with rain in the forecast that comes back on friday and continues into saturday and of course will watch that. mike, how is it looking for the commute? it's looking good but that was the big view behind me. let's show folks we're looking at green sensors but oakland was the question because the crash there had cleared. we might have had two crashes but whatever the case everything is back to speed as we look southbound 880 approaching 66 and then the coliseum.
4:50 am
the crashes have cleared. the fog a little bit clearer view for most of the bay. a little fog in the north bay but not a major concern. chp has no advisories there. we do look for a live view from our emeryville camera and you do see, also, fewer clouds hanging around the bay bridge toll plaza and no problems on the span. back to you. >> all right, thanks, mike. well, it's official. supreme court nominee amy coney barrett's confirmation hearings start next monday. members of the senate judiciary committee will appear remotely due to the pandemic. here is what we know about her. she is 45 years old and attended notre dame law school. coney barrett has been a federal appeals court judge since 2017. california could have the first openly gay member of the court. martin jenkins accepted the nomination by governor newsom. he's praised his father who was a janitor at coit tower and his
