5:09 am
now we're also tracking two storms as we go into the weekend. it's possible that they may head further to the north which would lessen our chances of rain, so we're watching out for that as well as those weekend showers in the forecast. more on that coming up in a few minutes. how is it looking right now for the commute, mike? all right, kari, no major changes. we wanted to check on the slowing we saw in hayward so let's do that. the map overall -- the majority of the sensors are green as we would expect. the big issues, the changes are as crews start to clear. we've had a number of them do that and right here that indeed looks like what happened in hayward, south 680, that close to speeds. that cleared just a few minutes ago. some more construction northbound 680. that construction into sunol slowing just a few minutes, there you go, with the arrow heading to the top of the screen. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 5:09. an all new warning with less than one month until election

we'll hear from the head of the fed today as he talks to the national association for business economists. jay powell has been and we expect will be very honest about our economy. we've seen a return to shutdowns in some sectors and very little movement towards another stimulus package out of congress. the house has passed a version. there's no movement by the senate. in fact, majority leader mcconnell has sent senators home except those working to approve president trump's supreme court justice nominee. powell has been very straightforward. he thinks congress needs to add more stimulus, get more money into the economy and now southwest is saying it will furlough employees unless the unions are willing to take a pay cut or congress comes through with some kind of relief bill. southwest has never laid off any employee, never furloughed an employee, never asked for pay cuts before. last week united and american cut tens of thousands of

5:20 am
we'll stay very warm until later this evening when it gradually cools off once again with a mostly clear sky and we'll start out tomorrow morning basically like this morning. but we've also been watching the air quality and that's been the other big issue. we've seen a lot of the smoke moving through parts of the north bay and drifting into the east bay. while we've seen improvements for the bay and the coast and the south bay that will continue even into the weekend as we track a couple storm systems set to move in. we can see them over the pacific. it may draw in the remnants of a weakening tropical system and enhance our chance of getting some rain but it all depends on the exact path of that rain if it moves further to the north. we may miss out on that and that's something we'll be watching. one of the more robust computer models a quarter to possibly close to a half inch of rain which would be much needed. we'll have to see the track of the systems friday and saturday.

it's still very warm but a big cooldown is headed our way. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking for the morning drive? kari, things are pretty cool there, too. you mentioned the fact we have less fog so better visibility for drivers. that's great news. as we look out to the maps we see the green all around the bay. we're going to focus on northbound 680 coming in through fremont and heading up to sunol. your arrow shows mild slowing. the crew is still there so keep that in mind. your commute coming in out of the altamont no problem or the bay bridge and the clouds yesterday, well, they're clear of this view. back to you. thanks so much, mike. coming up next on "today in the bay" nbc bay area responds. > reporter:r: his cruisise n leftft the dodock. hehe'll get a f full refundnd, ? wronong. i'm consumerr investitigator ch chmurara nbc bayay area r respo because the travel agent refuses
