here spreading some clouds across the bay area. but a lot of the rain is staying off the coast. and that will just kind of slide down the coast over the next several hours. so, we're not expecting much out of that. the next one right behind that looks like it does stay to the north of us. so, even with two weather systems nearby, it doesn't look like we'll see a lot of rain out of this. in fact, by saturday, as that storm system moves to the north, we only have very slight rain chances and an active weather pattern continues for the pacific northwest. high pressure moves in for the bay area, once again. and heats up our temperatures. i was really sad to see that we're not going to most likely get a good soaking out of this because we are in an extreme drought right now. especially for the north bay and the vegetation is just so dry. we've had so many wildfires and that rain would have really helped. we're mostly in severe drought from san francisco over towards the east bay and a moderate drought for the south bay where we are expecting a lot we'll

warmest spots staying in the 70s this afternoon and then quickly dropping back to the 60s in time for that evening walk. later on tonight, we're going back into the upper 50s all across the bay area. okay, so, we talked about why we're not seeing as much rain. so, here's the first of those two weather systems coming in. the center of low pressure still off the coast and it's just going to slide down the coast and keep a lot of that rain off shore. now, the second one that is moving in looks more likely that it will stay to the north. so, as we go hour by hour, we can see the clouds moving in. it does look like, though, that we could see still some spotty light showers but this is not the heavy soaking that we needed to help put an end to our fire season. we're going to see only some spotty light rain and then as we go into the weekend, some of those showers stay to the north of us. really hard to see that because as we get the drought monitor update this morning, it still shows the bay area is in an extreme drought for parts of the

forth bay and much of parts of the north bay and east bay we're seeing severe drought right now and then for the south bay we have moderate drought conditions. but we know that the vegetation is very dry and any rain would help. we are, at least, once again seeing the cooler air as well as the higher humidity. take a look at our forecast for the inland valleys for the next few days. we better take it in and enjoy it because there will be some changes next week. we'll see our highs trending back into the upper 80s by next wednesday while san francisco will stay for the most part in the 60s and then some 70s coming next week. we'll be watching the drizzle along the coastline, as well as san francisco. and that may be about all that we get. mike, you've been tracking the commute. what is the update for us? >> well, this was in for san jose and the update, let's take a live look. every time we look away progress or change a little bit. north

kenosha, wisconsin, police at shooing left him paralyzed. jacob blake has been released from the hospital. he's now undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation center in chicago. blake was shot in the back seven times in august after walking away from officers trying to arrest him. the kenosha district attorney is waiting for an outside report before deciding to charge the officers. wisconsin health leaders are trying to contain a new surge in coronavirus cases. in response, the governor announced the opening of a 530-bed field hospital at the state fairgrounds. today a new statewide order takes effect limiting crowds in bars and restaurants. for a second night protests on the streets of brooklyn. angry over in-house worship. the new closures impact schools and businesses and restaurants as part of the most severe restrictions we've seen there in months. new york mayor bill de blasio

ac. now, we're going to see the most unhealthy air quality continuing in the north bay, but we're also going to see it drifting into the other parts of the bay area while we're starting out pretty good thisern morning, we are g to see, once again, really nice weather for today. highs only reaching into the 70s. we'll talk more about this and some more changes ahead in the forecast. that's coming up. mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute? >> well, kari, in the last few seconds it looks like they may have cleared this sig alert and traffic alert from 101. live shot and our photographer has been bringing us great photos to show us all the progress all morning. all lanes northbound 101 just cleared in the last few seconds. and all this traffic back up as we look on the map to clear north 101 beginning the recovery from before you get to highway 85 all the way to hellyer. a lot of traffic up towards oakland road and 880 and 680 where we typically see shlowing

most likely move into louisiana tomorrow as a category 2 hurricane and, of course, that will be making big headlines as it takes basically the same track as hurricane laura did a few weeks ago. so, here in the bay area, a nice cool down. we talked about no 80s as of yet and continue into the weekend with the 70s and higher humidity and no clouds and spotty light showers and then for next week we reach into the upper 80s. it will heat up, once again, while san francisco will see some 60s and a lot of fog, mist

and drizzle. expect more of that as the weekend continues. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking right now for that traffic especially with what was happening earlier on 101. >> yeah, kari. we'll give you the thumbs up and talk about the ripple effect here. i'm showing you that crash has cleared with the big blue sign there north 101 at hellyer. all lanes are cleared from the earlier crash and the big backup is moving better from the 85 split and now ripples up as traffic moves and folks try to avoid the backup since before our show started and now looking at traffic shifting over to 87 north, as well as pushing north in towards 680 and 880. those are the two stretches that are tough out of morgan hill up through san jose and heading towards santa clara. when they merge sort of near the airport. smooth drive north of there for the peninsula. southbound 880 and a couple crashes near 92 and did cause more delays and a little brake tapping going on through hayward. should move more smoothly over

debate said the next debate would be virtual with president trump and joe biden in different locations set next thursday for the interest of public health. but president trump was quick to fire back saying he won't do it. >> i heard that the commission a little while ago changed the debate style and that's not acceptable to us. >> well, you say you're not going to participate? >> i'm not going to waste my time on a virtual debate. that's not what a debate is all about. >> former vice president joe biden responded to trump saying he, quote, looks forward to speaking directly to the american people. complete coverage continues next on "today" show right after "today in the bay." well, closer to home, google's new downtown san jose development is starting to take shape. really won't have to get out of your car. you'll be able to live in this area, go to retail stores and then experience arts and culture here. google and the city are working on this massive project described as a city within a city. there will be community hearings and a vote on the project in spring next year. google says this site would include 4,000 housing units and 25% of that affordable housing and this all comes at a time when home prices are lower. rent prices are down 10% in san jose and oakland and 20% down in san francisco and bay area home prices continue to reach unprecedented levels and median sale price for a single family home in the bay area was $975,000 in august. and that is up 15% from a year ago. city leaders say they're grateful that google is moving forward with this project even during this pandemic. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay."

>> thank you. in the meantime, san francisco is boosting renter protection to help renters make it in the bay. supervisors this week voted to halt no fault evictions until march. the ban is meant to help tenants struggling to pay rent during the pandemic. emergency orders to ban evictions and the order was initially supposed to end next month. california's backlog of unemployment claims is slowly shrinking. as of late last month, it has more than 1 million unprocessed claims. but two weeks ago the edd halted all new claims adding new technology to better handle the backlog. it is now processed about one-fifth of those claims for the entire backlog expected to be cleared by january. four bay area counties are not meeting california's new equity metrics when it comes to with this criteria meant to show testing disparities among
