good morning, motorcycle and ik. i'm laura garcia. let's talk about the cooldown, kari. it's been so nice to have the cooler weather around the bay area but also the air quality the other issue at times. it is looking very hazy and it's not all that healthy to breathe it in. especially in the north bay we're still seeing a lot of the unhealthy air quality in the air. for the rest of the bay area it's been decreasing as well. the spare the air alert has been extended as our temperatures remain comfortable. still not safe for a lot of people to open up the windows and let cooler temperatures in. i'll be monitoring this. we'll talk about what's ahead in the weekend forecast coming up. how is it looking for the early morning commute? kari, the commute volume is light. we've had a couple areas that are unusually slow. it should be changing. look at the map, the first spot is hayward over on the right side of the screen. you see the icon as you're approaching 92, that's

industrial boulevard. a crash and then a traffic break. cleared the vehicles to the shoulder. we should be recovering speed. slowing starts at whipple. clear by industrial and 92. and then over here west 24 you see a little slowing outside the caldecott. there is slowing for a crash that may be blocking two lanes. we're still getting details there. light on the commute right now. we'll watch, of course, how these change over the next couple of minutes. back to you. seven months after shutting down gyms across alameda county finally have the chance to reopen today. it comes as the county recently moved into the red tier of coronavirus restrictions. but, before you lace up your shoes and put your leggings on, be aware gyms can only reopen at 10% capacity. here is a look at our alameda county reopenings today all with similar restrictions including the lower capacity. we have more coming up in a live report in our 5:00 hour. and restaurants in the north

bay are now getting an extension to have outdoor dining. "the press democrat" reports the city of santa rosa will close down three blocks to provide restaurants and bars with a little more outdoor space until next year. the closure is just north of the old courthouse square and now restaurants are rushing to get outdoor heating before the weather gets too cold. the street closure will remain in effect until the end of january. over the summer black lives matter street murals became a regular part of city skacapes around the world. continuing that tradition by installing a large banner at city hall. not everyone agrees with the effort, however, because it could mean removing an existing street mural in one neighborhood. according to a staff memo to the mayor and city council it is because the federal highway administration prohibits murals, street artwork and other painted messages primarily due to traffic safety concerns. >> the notion this is, like, a

danger to traffic is the most absurd thing ever. go look at those dozens and dozens of other installations. are those having issues with traffic safety? no >> a spoke office of cultural affairs did not have any information about plans to remove the street mural because her department would not be handling that. happening today we should learn more about the future of the house occupied by east bay activists last winter. moms' for housing plan to update what's going on with the oakland property called the moms' house. it was vacant when the group first moved in. deputies evicted them in january. the oakland community land trust now owns that property. northern california is still not out of the woods when it comes to fire season. over the weekend some areas could experience power shutoffs. potential outages will not impact the bay area. instead pg&e says the shutoffs, if they happen, will cover no h

northeaste northeastern california and the foothills sunday into monday. in wine country firefighters continue to gain ground on the glass fire. it is now 70% contained. the number of acres burned is holding steady at 67,000 acres. evacuation orders have been lifted for santa rosa. a live look outside, the golden gate bridge on your left and on the right san jose. and because of those wildfires laura just talked about, a spare the air alert is being extended into the weekend and it will last until tomorrow. this marks the record 47th and 48th days of 2020 that an alert has been in place setting a new record. meteorologist kari hall is tracking it all today. hi, kari. it makes it so hard because finally we have some cooler, more comfortable weather, and i know a lot of people want to get out and enjoy it. if you have asthma, if you have breathing problems or covid-19, it really can irritate your

respiratory system. as we take a look at what's going on with our temperatures today we are going to see mostly some mid-60s as we head to the lunch hour. it's still going to be nice and mild, even coolish in a lot of spots. into the afternoon we're only reaching into the mid-70s for concord. 71 in napa. you can see the temperatures about 72 degrees. and heading into the evening the wind starts to pick up and will drop back to the mid to upper 60s. a very nice, comfortable day. we will have a few more days like this in the forecast. we'll talk about what's ahead and also the weather systems we've been monitoring bringing us more clouds. how is it looking right now for the commute, mike? kari, things are changing, i think, for the more favorable. let's talk about what's going on right this second over in the east bay. you start with the maps, overall looks great. highway 24, we talked about this crash west 24 your commute direction at fish ranch road, very close to the caldecott but

genmark manufacturers the molecular test which can simultaneously look for 20 different viruses and bacteria. flu and covid-19 patients typically develop similar symptoms in the early stages. public health officials say a test like this will be very helpful for hospitals this winter. they'll be able to effectively distinguish between covid-19 and influenza patients. meantime, french audio firm known for huge speakers with huge price tags that reach upwards of $3,000 is now taking on the likes of apple and samsung with little ear buds. the company debuted a pair of completely wireless ear buds called the gemini. it has a price of just under $300. slightly more expensive than apple's airpod pros.

breaking news that we're following, take a look at this, hurricane delta building and barreling towards the gulf coast right now. look at the size of that massive storm. it is expected to make landfall tonight. >> it is taking aim at southwest louisiana, an area that has seen a number of strikes, a record number, during what is already an unprecedented hurricane season. this is a live look at baton rouge where you see a lot of folks are on the move this morning trying to get out of the way of the storm. lafayette another one of the cities in the center of that projected path of the storm. "today in the bay's" jay gray is there with the latest. >> reporter: taillights line interstate 10 overnight. families trying to get away from delta as hurricane hunters fly

into the storm. lightning near the eye an indication the massive system is still gathering strength. >> it is expected to be a major hurricane as we wake up friday morning. >> reporter: targeting louisiana again. delta will be the fourth named storm to make landfall in the state this year. laura was the worst of it, a violent category 4 ripping apart lake charles. damage and debris still litters the city as they prepare now for another hit. >> now landfall is forecast in almost exactly the same area as landfall occurred with hurricane laura. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands are getting ready along the gulf coast. forecasters say the hardest hit areas could see wind gusts over 100 miles an hour and more than a foot of rain. >> scary. very scary. >> reporter: a fear that's become way too familiar in this storm-ravaged state. jay gray, nbc news, lafayette.

>> we really fee area. nothing like that in our neck of the woods. >> kari, you work in those areas where you projected those hurricanes, this is even worse than that. >> yeah, i was there. i just posted a picture on my social media pag page @karihallweather on facebook and instagram. i worked there and we had hurricane katrina and rita. unfortunately, it looks like this season is causing that season to pale in comparison. four in one year, i mean, that's just crazy. our hearts go out to them and my friends there. we've had a lot of issues of our own with all of the fires burning. we still have a lot of smoke and even as our temperatures come down and it gets nicer outside we're still not really able to get out and enjoy it because of the smoke coming through. we're looking at temperatures in

parts of the east bay reaching into the low 70s. along the coastline we have some upper 50s for half moon bay. you head over to san mateo, mid-60s. we'll see palo alto reaching up to 70 degrees. for san francisco expect highs mostly in the mid-60s today and our north bay highs will reach into the low 70s for ukiah and napa, mill valley reaching 67 degrees. so we do see a couple of weather systems still heading our way. this one that we're seeing approaching the coast now will just kind of slide down the coast. we're not expecting much out of either one of these except for the cooler air as well as the more fog building near the coast and breezy winds. it does stay active. we're going to start to see high pressure building and that will make our temperatures warm up by early next week. we do still have a few more days

of this nice weather as we look ahead to the weekend and make some plans to get outside. the air quality will be something we'll have to continue to monitor. more clouds moving in and spotty, light rain for the north bay. near the coastline but then we see a lot of that weakening as it moves across the rest of the bay area. our temperatures will reach into the low 70s throughout the weekend. and sunday is looking pretty nice as we still will have some mild temperatures and a few clouds to give us some shade. the next week is when those temperatures start to crank back up again. we're back in the upper 80s by next wednesday and thursday. how is it looking right now for the morning commute, mike? kari, things are changing. we'll talk about what we see the next few minutes as well. overall you have your pleasant green sensor flow as you like to see. green means you're at the limit, probably cheating the limit in a lot of spots. lighter traffic right now. we h 23rd.

29th. we do have the south and northbound respectively with those construction crews restricting lanes down to one lane. a lot of slowing here. the southbound side may be getting ready to clear -- i'm sorry, the northbound side may be getting ready to clear. southbound will see a little bit more slowing for a while. this could last until 6:00. we'll track that. this has been going on for a while west 24. we have that crash still blocking a couple lanes. should get there in about three more minutes, chp says, with a tow truck out by the caldecott. no other problems in the area. back to you. all right. thanks so much, mike. right now the white house is preparing president trump's supreme court nominee. senate confirmation hearings for amy coney barrett will start monday and run through thursday next week. new concerns in shasta county, a recent outbreak at the bethel school. it spread to a senior care center in redding.

the county is reporting new deaths bringing the total to 24 since the pandemic took hold. the last week the county reported 335 new cases, about half of them tied to that bethel school. but now other schools are saying that they are reporting infections as well. next week is the last week californians will receive additional money from president trump's midsummer executive order. the lost wages assistance program checks provided an extra $300 from fema funding. next week's payment covers the jobless during the final round which was the period between july 26th and september 5th. in all californians received six weeks of those added benefits. okay. it's 4:52 right now. still flying at center stage, up next on "today in the bay" a look at who fans are calling the play of that infamous fly from the vice presidential debate.

this weekend's "saturday night live" episode. and the push to make the first black-owned nfl team to the bay area. happening now, protests in st. paul, minnesota, after former minneapolis police officer derek chauvin posted bond. protesters were carrying signs with the names of those who died in encounters with police. chauvin held his neck on george floyd's neck until he died in minneapolis.
