"today in the bay" cierra johnson joins us live in c calistoga and monitoring some of the outages in the north bay. >> yes, good morning. as i was coming into the main drag of calistoga you can see it was really, really dark. typically they have the generators running and it may be too early forbut many of the bu this main drag are dark, but behind me you can see the main square does have power. that's because a while ago the city did have a collaboration with pg&e to have that microgrid. but for the most part it is dark except for the occasional headlight coming down. we wanted to provide you an update with the power outages so far. right now 9,221 customers are without power in napa and as for sonoma 1,777 folks without

finished, senate judiciary republicans have scheduled the first vote. yesterday was another long day of questions and answers how she might rule on the high court. "today in the bay" tracie potts is live in d.c. with an update. tracie? >> hi, marcus. good morning, everyone. there is a vote scheduled for this morning. it's supposed to happen in about an hour. but it's not a final vote, it will give us some idea where the 12 republicans and ten democrats who have been questioning her. we are expecting that to break along party lines. she is now done. judge barrett not returning for today's session, but yesterday wrapped up with questions again about the affordable care act. she said that she's had no conversations and made no commitments to get rid of it, but also about presidential power and whether a president can pardon him or herself. the courts haven't weighed in and neither will she. democrats and republicans are

weighing in, though, on whether they think she should be appointed. >> this hearing has done nothing to alleviate the concerns raised about why this nominee was chosen and why this is being rushed when the american people deserve to be heard. >> this is the first time in american history that we've nominated a woman who is pro life and embraces her faith without apology and she's going to the court. >> so, that's kind of what we're expecting to see with that preliminary vote today. the committee will wrap its work on next thursday and then a final vote on the 26th of october. back to you. >> all right. moving along there. thank you, tracie. now to decision 2020. opponents of proposition 22.

i'll talk about the elevated fire danger coming up in my full forecast. mike? >> we had a fire on an rv and tree in san jose. we'll take you to the northbound 101 or just shy of that exit on the map. you see no more slowing. that's great news. no more lanes blocked but the burnt rv over on the shoulder. but you see green there and you see green for the rest of silicon valley and that is a good flow and more green for silicon valley and our friends frank over at cnbc. >> thanks a lot, mike. good morning, everybody, out there in the silicon valley. here are today's top business headlines. wall street set to open lower extending two days of losses for the markets. those are the first back-to-back declines in almost a month. investors continue to weigh the odds of a stimulus deal being reached before the election. treasury secretary steven mnuchin saying that will be difficult as democrats and republicans remain far apart. the latest report on the number of people filing for

unemployment as well as earnings for morgan stanley and charles schwab. united airlines is hunkering down. the company reporting a big loss in the third quarter as sales fell nearly 80%. united has flown less than its rivals throughout the pandemic. there are some positive signs already and people going through airport security this past sunday hit the highest level since mid march but those international flights remain difficult. many companies are hesitant to resume their business travel.on concerts and otherevents. teachers and performers use third-party sites or ask for tip jars at paypal. accept payment through paypal and include music, photography and art and cool for many people who weren't able to keep their businesses open hopefully now have another sense of revenue. >> i like that virtual tip jar thing. nice. >> i know.

talking about a possible man in a jetpack, once again, apparently seen high riding in the skies above los angeles. here's the latest cockpit audio. >> was it a uav or was it a jet pack? >> well, that's air traffic control audio from a china airlines crew flying into lax yesterday. at the time, they were flying at 6,000 feet altitude. this is the second sighting nea. our sister station spoke with leading jet pack designer yesterday. he's convinced it's probably just something inflatable and not someone doing their best james bond. but, still, people are talking about it. i would be surprised if you're on a flight and you see some guy flying next to you. >> you want that window spot and you're like, what is that? you know, it's all fun until someone gets hurt. >> like the twilight movie. twilight zone.

>> all right. here we go, 5:17 for you this morning. look at that forecast for you today. vianey. >> yeah, when laura said twilight i thought the vampire twilights and i thought was there a vampire flying in the sky in that movie that i missed. microclimate weather alert and i want to make sure you're up to date at home and download the nbc bay area app. let's get right to it. 68 palo alto and it's already getting pretty warm in concord at 76 degrees and the high pressure and an off-shore wind event that will kick up. it already kicked up especially overnight and that's what we were concerned about because when we see winds picking up and when people are sleeping, big, major concerns. the red flag warning will be in effect now through 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. dry northeast wind and 30, 40

plus miles per hour and sustained winds between 10 and 20. that's humidity also a concern and that high pressure continues to dominate over the area and continues to dry us out and let's take a look at the wind gust. notice diminished heading into the afternoon and look what happens later tonight at around 11:30 and overnight hours just like last night. check out calistoga 26 miles per hour winds and napa 26-mile-per-hour winds and we're talking elevations above 1,000 feet. so, if you're located more near ground level, you probably won't even notice the winds but you'll certainly notice the heat no matter where you are because heat advisory in effect for the entire bay area until 9:00 p.m. tomorrow. we're talking near record breaking heat. how hot will it get today? 85 degrees for san francisco and half moon bay typically in the 50s, low 60s today. 79, 80. upper 90s potentially even triple digits for the interior valleys and those 90s will

remain in the forecast at least through saturday. the winds are expected to diminish heading into friday and then by saturday we get a shift in the winds with more of an onshore flow and look at the temperature drop. we go down into the 80s for inland areas and back down into much more comfortable 60s for the san francisco area. mike? >> all and giving the talk of wind at 1,000 feet and i know you were talking to the rocket man. secret communication you had. we'll check in with vianey right now. we're look at a smooth drive for the green sensors and update a few things we've seen over the course of the morning and mornings. northbound 680 shows slowing for mission and starting on the southern end and heading up towards durham and the crew had been there for the last couple overnights, of course. clearing about 6:00. we're looking at the clearing of highway 84 and the crash cleared and reopened again eastbound. but no problems there now. we're looking at a crash near

welcome back. 5:24 for you this morning. happening now a wildfire burning in colorado has just become the state's largest wildfire ever. the cameron peak fire has now burned close to 160,000 acres. forced new evacuations yesterday in northern california. wildfires say at least 100 structures have been lost.

now, this is since the fire began in august. continuing our pandemic coverage, as well. a surge in france is prompting hospitals there to implement some safety measures. covid patients now make up half of the intensive care units in paris alone. 32,000 people in france have died. french leaders are now imposing a nightly curfew for more than half the country. curfews start this saturday between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. new this morning, a new order from the state supreme court to reexamine the conviction of scott peterson. peterson has now been removed from death row in the murder of his wife lacey back in 2002. one of the jurors withheld information to get on the panel. peterson's conviction is not expected to be overturned. the response expected by next

a few minutes. mike? >> you're talking about fire danger, i'm talking about car fire or rv fire in the south bay. well zooming in as you see mostly green northbound 280 there was an rv on fire and caught a tree on fire and a bigger tow truck than for your normal car, that's necessary. as it arrives, we may see slowing but so far everything is just fine passing by highway 87. north 680 slows a little more and we're shifting the slow down and the crew that is cleared by 6:00 is starting to clear right now just north of mission. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. a live look outside across the bay area, our great cameras out there. a high fire danger and led to pg&e cutting power to thousands of customers. let's go live to "today in the bay" bob redell in danville with a look at what conditions are like for folks there. bob? >> right now it's very warm. very breezy.

the wind's been on and off. you can't see our tv screen there, laura. but temperature also warm, as i mentioned. mid 70s. unfortunately, these are very good conditions for wildfires but, fortunately, no reports of fire activity here in the east bay. but as a precaution as you mentioned pg&e has shut off a power for customers here in danville. the east and south bays and the peninsula. this is so the power lines and equipment aren't energized if they were to get knocked down by these winds. you can see the latest numbers from pg&e in contra costa. 1,000 customers without power and alameda county around 5,300 and san mateo county around 1,700 and santa clara county around 2,200. they prepared the public for these public safety power shutoffs setting up stop signs

for traffic controls since stop lights will be out. power might not get turned back on until 10:00 tomorrow night because pg&e has to check their lines and equipment after the winds die down. >> it will be followed quickly by another period of winds thursday night into friday. so, it's really looking to us like two risk periods of winds. >> our son's best friend is coming over because he's not going to have power. >> we just, we spoke with one woman in pleasanton who bought a power generator to keep her home electi , she needs her house air conditioned because she raises english bull dog and to prevent the food in her fridge from spoiling. reporting in danville, bob redell. take you live right now to the north bay in downtown

calistoga where the power is out. what you see right there is from our cameras. the power. but you can see that lamp post there, out. now you can see some lights still on but really that's the backup generator helping businesses in that area, as well, if you're out there. other places in the north bay, not so much. here are the numbers we have on the outages. sonoma and napa counties adds up to 12,000 customers without power. you can link to pg&e power outage map and that way you can keep track of what is going on. it's really cool because you can type in your street name and track the outages in your neighborhood. does go out, we want to let youonur free app you can link to our live newscast and get the latest information. laura. >> take us on the road with you. well, the senate confirmation hearings continue for supreme court nominee judge amy coney barrett. live look, in fact, at the capitol where the hearing is wrapping up today. and the first vote is also

expected. the senate judiciary committee is expected to approve her nomination. now, yesterday, once again, barrett spent much of the time r really deflecting questions on her specific views but tried to assure the country that she does not have an agenda. barrett would replace the late justice ruth bader ginsburg a champion of abortion rights. yesterday she declined to say whether roe v. wade represents so-called superor no case to overturn it. the last democrat to question her was senator kamala harris. >> would you consider the 135 million people who gain protection under the affordable care act when deciding a case that challenges that law? >> senator harris, if i were to be confirmed and conclude that i was not, that i was able to sit on the case pursuant to the recusal statute and then if i heard the case and decided the case, i would consider all the protections that congress put in

place. >> if things move as scheduled, the final confirmation vote could happen in two weeks. republicans are expected to have the votes to approve barrett's nomination. well, developing this morning, san francisco police have a mystery on their hands this morning after someone stole a lemur from the san francisco zoo. the lemur is named maki. the zoo reported him missing yesterday morning. police believe someone broke into the habitat and zookeepers say he's old and slower than the rest of the troops making him a little more easier to catch. one expert says a highly endangered animal do not make good pets. >> they're not going to enjoy having this animal in their lives and the animal, maki, is not going to enjoy being part of this human world that they can't survive in. >> authorities hope surveillance video provides them some clues or better yet a tip from someone who knows something. the last time an animal was stolen from the san francisco

and it is 5:40 right now. continuing to monitor hot ask dry conditions. a red flag warning in effect and i'll know into detail on how long this will last and when we will see the biggest impact for the wind. mike? speed reimpacted through fremont and looks like we're in the clear and we're almost there. look at the map. still slow at north 680 and still passing by mission. things are condensing and i believe those crews are just about clearing and head up towards auto mall and durham and another live look at the bay bridge toll plaza and traffic starts to increase a bit. no one is waiting yet at the toll plaza as we're at 5:40 we should start to see things slow

down on the incline and check how the overall view coming up. >> all right, thanks, mike. well, 49ers faithful in mourning with reports of the death of legend during the team's hay day from coronavirus. hall of famer fred dean was a main stay during the early '80s when the niners won their first two super bowls. that news also being tweeted out by former teammate. dean was recently hospitalized and just 65 years old. more sad news for the nfl fans. the nfl already having a hard enough time keeping the coronavirus at bay during the regular season now the league is making the regular decision to cancel this year's pro bowl game. and, no, this will not impact any plans surrounding the super bowl. decision 2020.

less than three weeks to the election and democratic candidate joe biden continues to lead president trump in the polls. take a look at the latest national nbc/"wall street journal" poll. finds biden ahead of biden 11 points. the margin of error is 3%. the poll was conducted after trump returned to the white house from his bout with covid. now that poll might not show the millions of americans who have already voted, some say as many as 15 million have cast their ballots early. last night biden seemingly confident as he leads while president trump in iowa yesterday returned to his attack line. >> as long as donald trump is president the more reckless he seems to get. >> vice president biden, you owe the people of america an apology because it turns out, you are a corrupt politician. okay.

>> so the president also weighed in on first lady melania trump revealing that their son also had coronavirus. he says that barron has now tested negative and it looks like covid relief for those $1,200 stimulus checks everyone is waiting for and more, of course. well, they aren't happening any time soon. well, as you know, the second presidential debate is off because president trump didn't want to do it virtually. >> that's right. but nbc news will host a town hall with the president instead. and it is tonight. it will take place in miami outside the perez art museum and savannah guthrie will moderate a conversation between the president and miami voters. you can watch it here right here on nbc bay area. starts at 8:00 p.m. and tonight's town hall at the same location where lester holt moderated a town hall with joe biden last week. the network offered president

trump the same opportunity, he accepted. tonight's event is also going to be at the same time biden is holding a town hall on abc. new signs of hope in the fight against coronavirus right here in california. the number of people testing positive is holding steady. the governor says testing is going strong. in fact, testing is ramping up at two of the bay area's main airports. let's check in with "today in the bay" kris sanchez tmorning can get a test and starting today you can say aloha heading to hawaii without quarantining. >> we go first class, laura. that is really the question i have. it is actually a really big change and hawaii is going to allow you to go to the islands for a visit without having to quarantine for two weeks once you get there. so long as you test negative before you fly to hawaii. now, starting today, you can also get a rapid test right before you take off from sfo here where we are this morning.

or from oakland international airport. hawaii's department of health approved the airports and united airlines so-called trusted partners. strict guidelines like that and the ones we had here in california seem to be working in slowing the spread of covid-19. take a look at that blue line here that is the rate at which people are testing positive here in california. the positivity rate went from about 40% in april to 2.6% average for the last two weeks. this is at a time that other states are really struggling with big surges. new york saw its highest rate of hospitalizations since june. wisconsin is in really deep trouble setting records for the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths in a single day. now, while things are looking up now since the pandemic started more than 855 californians have tested positive. and nearly 17,000 californians did not survive.

heat advisory in effect through tomorrow at 9:00 p.m. we're talking temperatures in the upper 80s, probably even a couple low triple digits potentially up through the north bay and interior valley. here's a look at your mic microclimate forecast for today. mostly clear and it will be sunny and beautiful. however, the sunny and beautiful skies pair would the windy conditions are going to dry us out and, well, there goes that wed flagern red flag warning. that is in effect th elevations above 1,000 feet. keep in mind that down below you might not even notice any winds but if it felt like it's been a very tragic when it comes to the wildfires, it has. here's the latest when it comes to the latest record-setting wildfires and want to bring you up to date on how we're doing this year. over 4 million acres have burned in california alone. the largest california fire ever was the august complex fire at

over 1 million, which now ranks as one of the worst fire seasons on record. and we're still currently in that fire season. so, when we issue these microclimate warnings, it's for a good reason. we want to make sure that you're prepared and that you have a heads up because we definitely don't want to see anything start or spread, which is what we were concerned about overnight as we saw the gusty winds and we'll continue to see that concern heading into tonight, as well. how long is this going to last? we have the high pressure that will warm us up and dry us up. by tonight, we'll see those winds kicking up again. the biggest threat in the north bay mountains. 94 degrees by tomorrow we'll start to notice the winds begin to demriniminish and then notict happens on saturday and sunday. a shift in the weather pattern and a shift in the wind from off shore to onshore winds and look at the temperatures drop back down into the 80s into monday and tuesday with little bit more seasonable temperatures, as

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." now to decision 2020. opponents of proposition 22 are planning to hold a rally today, a drive-thru style rally planning to end in san francisco. rideshare companies are behind proposition 22 which upends california's gig economy law. their future in california depends on it. dozens of ride share drivers are part of today's event. it's passing through five cities and ending with a rally outside uber's san francisco headquarters. we are now 19 days until election day and one national coalition is mobilizing women of color to get involved and vote. it's called she the people and the founder of the group is aimee allison from oakland.
