right now at 4:30, thousands are still without power in the bay area as high fire danger continues. next, how people are coping, plus, when relief is coming. as california grapples with one of the worst fire seasons in history, financial help from the government isn't coming up for the fire zones that are impacted. and buckle up because there's no driver in the driver's seat. come up for you the driverless taxi about to hit the streets of one bay area city. thanks so much for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike for a look at the early morning commute in a bit, but vianey is in for kari. good morning to you. how are we looking today? good morning. we're off to a hot start. we've got 70s and 80s right now and it's not even 5:00 a.m. can you believe it? san francisco right now 74 degrees. we are still under that heat advisory through 9:00 tonight because of these temperatures. san jose, 63. the fact san jose is -- or san francisco is warmer than san jose really gives you an idea where we're at right now. the wind speeds are calm at the lower level. high fire danger, i'll go into more detail coming up in my full forecast. mike? vianey, you asked can i believe it's not even 5:00 a.m.

yes, yes, we know. over to the roadways, because it's so early, very light traffic flow. let's give you an updated look at the map. green sensors all over the place. much of your construction work has already cleared. that is the tradition on friday but flowing southbound 880 to 23rd in oakland we'll track the build and the changes coming up. back to you. thanks so much, mike. in some parts of the bay area the power is slowly coming back online. thousands of pg&e customers still in the dark right now. this is the latest map. you see the purple triangles there. they indicate who is affected by public safety power outages. the majority in the north bay. >> as many as 30,000 customers impacted right now, but in oakland and other parts of the east bay, some relief this morning as those lights are back on. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd has a look at another difficult day for many people in the bay area. >> reporter: the owner of

oakland's tgi sushi drove an hour to make sure the power shutoff didn't cause his circuits to blow. >> last time it was more worse. today is only one day and also it's not a friday so it's okay. we can survive. >> reporter: that's because the lights were turned off just before midnight. they came back on around 7:30. >> we were hoping to have some sushi for dinner tonight. unfortunately because the power is out, looks like we're going to have to figure out some other plans. >> reporter: pg&e laying out their plans for overnight -- >> by 10:00 a.m. we should see the winds on the decrease and they will begin to startish be ewi issuing a weather all clear. >> reporter: this family lives in napa where power will be off. this generator is providing relief, but it's not helping his granddaughter who can't do distance learning without the internet. >> it's for a reason but i don't see any wind or anything and

there was no wind yesterday. just seems pointless at the moment. >> reporter: meanwhile pg&e is asking for patience. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay"" a series of wildfires that began early in august asked for aid. governor newsom asked for $346 million in help. "the sacramento bee" reports it has been turned down for a major presidential disaster declaration in connection with the creek fire. this in fresno and five other counties. california officials will appeal the decision. this presidential decision does not affect the wildfires here in the bay area. a north carolina family is praying their loved one who disappeared from san francisco is found safe. the family's 19-year-old sydney west hasn't been heard from since september 30th. west is a one-time cal student

the models, and it is. it's 82 in half moon bay. and that's thanks to the flow bringing that spike in temperatures. but it's also what's keeping us dry through today. we're not in the clear of the high fire danger, at least not until we cool off and see the winds diminish. there it is. half moon bay, 82 degrees and san francisco is at 74. i'll go into more detail on how long the heat will last. mike? my goodness. looking over to the roadways where we don't have so much going on here, very quiet. we do have a deer apparently darted into the roadway. we're looking at north 680 heading up past scott creek road at the bottom of your screen. no lanes blocked from what i understand. we're still watching the updates. still active construction. there may be slowing but that will probably kick in over the next half hour. nothing going on right now. a light traffic flow.

it comes to the highs and lows within our microclimates, there is a range. i want to show you san jose is at 63 degrees. san jose is further inland. then we have a ten-plus-degree difference in oakland. 77 degrees right now and this is the one where we're like, whoa, it's 82 degrees in half moon bay and the reason for the spike we have the offshore flow. high pressure has been dominating keeping us dry. i want to show you this map. it shows you the 24-hour temperature difference compared to yesterday at this same hour. half moon bay is 31 degrees warmer compared to yesterday at this hour. that's incredible. san francisco ten degrees warmer. notice some areas like livermore and san jose a drop in temperatures. keep in mind we will be seeing a shift in the weather heading into this weekend. we'll go from offshore flow to

an onshore flow but the red flag warning remains in effect because we still have the dry conditions and that will be at least through 11:00 a.m. we've seen gusty winds, that heat advisory in effect through 9:00 p.m. as far as the air quality forecast there is an air quality advisory in place because we still have some drifting smoke that could be nearby. air quality is expected to be moderate overall. microclimate highs for today, 80s and 90s. san francisco about 85 degrees but that could get warmer. half moon bay, high of 79. we already hit the high at 82. it sort of gives you an idea the next seven days we'll be in the 80s and 70s heading into next week for the inland areas in the 80s. mike? friday lighter volume across the bay bridge without any problems. that's good stuff over here. a smooth drive and no backup at the toll plaza. what a beautiful, clear view there.

look at the map, a smooth drive as well on our speed sensors as you take a look out to the maps, no major issues across into the bay. slowing northbound 101. heading up to the robin williams tunnel, but it's clear now and so is 880 southbound where we had slowing southbound to 23rd. the last couple of minutes have seen these sensors turn green but the crew still registered on the roadway and north 680 up through fremont but no delays now. it's friday light. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. it's 4:49 right now. we have a follow-up of a man wanted in the murder of his ex-girlfriend in the south bay is found dead. he was suspected of shooting a woman saturday night in the parking lot of the hilton garden inn in milpitas. wednesday night detectives located the woman dead inside a merced county hotel. we're learning more about what led to an explosion at a gilroy home.

police say the man living inside the home had homemade explosives and homemade explosives lab. earlier this week one of the devices exploded injuring the man. at last check he is still in intensive care. detectives say there's no evidence he has extremist views but don't yet know why he had so many explosive devices. there's a new push for mayors up and down california to try to get students back into the classroom during this pandemic. the call comes from big city mayors coalition. this as many districts are still trying to iron out plans for the rest of the school year. they say they want uniformed guidelines for reopening. >> we know for low-income children who may depend on school for the lunch they may not get for nutrition, for health care, for socialization, all of the things so essential for our children. >> the coalition isn't demanding

schools all reopen at once but would like the most vulnerable students to be allowed to return including students with special needs and kids whose parents are essential workers. happening today artists from all over the country and even right here in the bay area are coming together to save our stages. this three-day streaming festival this weekend. they are performing at different locations in the u.s. all to support the national independent venue association. the goal is to raise money to save venues hit hard during the pandemic. that's at 8:15 tonight. the show must go on. the tony awards are making history even during the pandemic. plus, back at home, zoo officials relieved after a once missing lemur is found. straight ahead, why the mystery isn't over just yet. happening now for you,

oakland school officials say that mcclymonds high school is safe. the campus was shut down one month before the start of the pandemic when a toxic chemical was found in the groundwater under the school. the district will hold a virtual news conference today despite the campus being safe, students and teachers will continue to distance learn. we'll be right back.

keepers. police and animal control were called in yesterday to daly ci y city, a preschool, after a child apparently spot it had eating from a bush. the child told the teacher and the teacher, chris lee, put two and two together. he tells us it was a show and tell his students will never forget. >> it was a great experience for my kids to see the lemurs not in a zoo. >> well, the case is still far from closed. police still believe two people took the lemur from its enclosure late wednesday and those people have not been identified. new for you this morning a major landmark in south san francisco has a new owner. the mercury news reports that the genesis office campus was purchased by a real estate group ventus. it's right off 101. the genesis offices have companies consisted of biotechnology, life sciences and tech firms.
