nbc's pete williams has more. >> reporter: what seems to come from the right group proud boys were actually from iran. they started showing up in inboxes to democrats in florida. it says, quote, you will vote for president trump on election day or we will come after you. the proud bays claim they know information about the voter and acted in a threatening nature and told the parties to switch to republicans the proud boys say they had nothing to do with the emails. the director of national intelligence john ratcliffe said they with to intimidate voters. >> they were designed to incite voters and damage president trump. >> both iran and russia have obtained some voter registration

information but so far russia has not appeared to have done anything with it it did something four years ago too. ratcliffe and the fbi director in an unusual late evening television statement said iranian and russian activity was detected quickly by the intelligence community and voters should continue to have confidence in the security of the u.s. election system the white house says it's directed law enforcement, defense, and intelligence agencies to monitor any attempts to interfere with the election, and it says those efforts are working. >> a pivotal day ahead in the supreme court showdown on capitol hill the senate judiciary committee will vote to send judge amy coney barrett's position >> it will not stop the nomination process we've got a new statement from

the senate minority leader chuck schumer and the democrats on that judiciary committee objecting to all this. they're calling it a sham saying it is not a legitimate vote and that's why they don't want to participate. they believe that judge barrett would put health care and other issues at risk and that she brings a republican agenda now, the rules are that at least two members of the minority, in this case democrats have to be present for business to happen, but the chair of this committee, senator lindsey graham, says the vote is on today whether or not democrats show up. >> leader mcconnell, lindsey graham have defiled the senate so that it may never return to what it was. it wasn't starting off in such a good place, but the bottom line is very simple we do not want to participate in an illegitimate illicit hearing. >> democrats have objected to the timing of this vote happening really in the middle of an election when millions of
