debate was a huge improvement from the first. nbc's kristen welker navigated through several key issues allowing us to hear what each of the men had to say. first their take on covid shutdowns. >> i'm going to shut down the virus not the country. it's his ineptitude that caused the country to have to shut down in large part, why businesses have gone under, schools are closed, so many people lost their living and why they're concerned. >> his democrat governors, cuomo in new york, you look at what's going on in california, pennsylvania, north carolina, democrats -- democrats all, they're shut down so tight and they're dying. they're dying. and he supports all these people. all he talks about are shutdowns. no, we're not going to shutdown. >> on health care biden points out the president is yet to share a plan, and the president says that biden has a socialist agenda. >> 10 million people have lost their private insurance, and he

quentin. the superior court ordered his murder conviction re-examined due to possible juror conduct. peterson was convicted in 2004 of murdering his wife laci peterson and their unborn son. a memorial is growing in south berkeley where a young, pregnant mother was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting wednesday night. family and friends sent us photos of the victim, 19-year-old sereinate henderson near her family home on prince street. one relative who did not want to be identified talked about that tragic loss. >> she had all the leadership qualities to do whatever she wanted to do in life. >> right now police are not commenting on the investigation or if they are pursuing any leads. henderson leaves behind a young son. one year to the day after

the start of the kincade wildfire our investigative unit obtained findings on the cause. cal fire says it started by a dormant pg&e power line that should have been dismantled because it was no longer needed. it once provided fire to a closed thermoplant outside of geyserville, it snapped, hit the tower multiple times, showering sparks into the brush below. pg&e says it's not yet seen cal fire's findings. the fire burned 77,000 acres and destroyed 174 homes. california is recording its highest daily covid deaths in a month. 130 new deaths were reported yesterday up from 53 last saturday. midweek it hit 62. deaths are down 6% and cases down nearly 3%. well, personal care business in the north bay can now start to reopen despite being the most restrictive tier. sonoma county will now allow

tattoo parlors, nail salons and massage studios to reopen indoors. the last few months health leaders allowed the businesses to reopen but only outdoors. sonoma county right now has the most restrictive rules because it's still in the purple tier. happening today if you're planning to go out this weekend with your family in the south bay you can go to some playgrounds. after being closed for seven months san jose playgrounds are reopening today. nearly 300 playgrounds and more than 1,000 amenities will be up and running. you can use basketball, volleyball courts, barbecue pits and picnic areas. >> maybe we bring whatever we want to grill. >> you know what i'm starting to like, grilled vegetables. >> wow, marcus. >> yes. those are good. >> i like my ribs and my steaks, too, now. >> i thought this was going to

kari, you made me smile already. take it away. okay. let's hope that continues as we talk about what's going on in the forecast. it is going to be a really nice day. let's check out our high temperatures as we first start out in the south bay with san jose reaching 74 degrees. that is going to be so comfortable. nice and not as windy as it's been the last couple of days as danville reaches 78 degrees. a high of 71 in oakland. 79 in livermore. and as you head over to the coastline today for a friday afternoon you might want to take a jacket to half moon bay. we'll be in the low 60s. palo alto will reach 73 degrees and san francisco reaching up to about 67 degrees in the mission district and sonoma up to 77 degrees while ukiah will reach 81. okay, let's talk about the concerns i have for the weekend forecast. so the national weather service dropped the red flag warning for this morning as the winds have calmed down, and now we turn our

attention to the next high wind event that we'll see as we head through sunday. so there will be a high fire danger, fire weather watch going up starting on sunday morning, and that continues through tuesday morning. during this time frame high winds. this goes along with that high fire danger, the high wind event that we'll see starting on sunday afternoon. so we have two watches that are in effect for the end of the weekend because this time around it looks like the winds will be a lot stronger than what we've seen recently. so let's go through this wind forecast. we're starting out with some light winds today as well as tomorrow. then as we head through sunday morning. we're starting to see the winds picking up. even in the valleys we'll have high winds. the mountain tops may have some of those wind gusts reaching 70 miles per hour. so let's take a look at our temperature trend for spots like livermore. upper 70s today. a nice, cool weekend.

as we get that cooler air it's also going to be quite gusty. mike, how is it looking for the drive? a look out to the south bay where we had this crash, 238 eastbound going over to great america parkway. it is, i believe, out of lanes. there may be some folks on the shoulder. both directions moving nicely. south 880 at whipple, the latest update says everything is clear and so are the speeds. no problem for the map. an easy drive, friday light. 450 we see this amount of traffic any day. back to you. >> thanks, mike. faulty power equipment is being cited for starting two

wildfires last october. one, the easy fire that burned 1,800 acres near the ronald reagan library in simi valley. a larger fire the next day called the maria fire burned 10,000 acres near santa paula. investigators are reporting socal equipment started the easy fire and equipment by the oil company california resources ignited the maria fire. federal judges on the west coast are blocking white house efforts to not include undocumented residents in the 2020 census. the case challenging the president's executive order which seeks to exclude anyone in the country illegally. the judges ruled such an order is unconstitutional. it comes after the supreme court recently agreed to review a similar case out of new york. a new defeat for ride share companies and their effort to keep drivers off the company books. a state appeals court upheld the order for companies to treat drivers as employees rather than

independent contractors. but that decision will not have any immediate impact because it won't take effect for at least 30 days. it may not have any impact at all. lyft and uber are trying to bypass the gig economy law via prop 22 which voters are deciding right now. california's employment development department appears to be finally catching up with the scammers filing fraudulent jobless claims. the "l.a. times" reports the edd is now frozen. 350,000 debit cards due to suspicious activity. often the red flag is a high number of claims at a single address. when people first started putting the whole scam together state lawmakers say some who filed legitimate claims are getting caught up in the wash. the frozen cards could represent billions in benefits paid since march. anyone whose card gets frozen is being asked to verify their

identity. there's still a lot of uncertainty about how easy it is to catch covid from touching contaminated surfaces. our southern california sister station tested the theory. experts swabbed common locations across orange county. about one-third came back positive on surfaces like bathroom door handles in grocery stores, restaurants, indoor dining and mall escalators. an infectious disease expert at ucla says someone can still become infected by touching one of the surfaces. >> someone else could get infected if they touch their eyes, their nose or their mouth. >> that's why health leaders say it is important to use hand sanitizer and wash your hands thoroughly as much as possible. a flag on the play. next on "today in the bay," the all-new covid case on the raiders team that's leading to a sunday football game shake-up
