right now at 5:00 on "today in the bay" dangerous winds arriving in the bay area forcing pg&e to cut power to millions. the big concern the potential for wildfires. we have a live look across the bay area. and here's video shot overnight at some of those whipping winds. you probably heard them as were you sleeping. our team is live monitoring overnight conditions and what you need to know if you're headed out the door. "today in the bay" starts right now.

a very good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us this monday morning. i'm laura garcia. we went on an extra 30 minutes early this morning at 4:00 a.m. just because of this red flag warning. >> i'm kris sanchez in for marcus washington. we are seeing some vegetation fires pop up overnight. kari hall is watching those winds. and the high fire danger will continue throughout this morning as we've seen the high wind gusts especially in our upper elevations and the wind advisory will expire at 11:00 but the rest of the day will be breezy as we see the winds gusting for even our valleys up to 50 miles an hour. this red flag warning will continue for today. up until tomorrow morning so we're still looking at breezy winds and some very dry air. we'll continue to monitor that and talk about what's ahead in our forecast coming up. mike, how is it looking driving to work this morning? kari, your system and my system are map share data as we

look at the maps for traffic data, the speed looks fine but the highlighted yellow is where gusty winds reported over the last half hour throughout the santa cruz mountains and the south bay. a live look shows you outside we have a little shake from the observing c oakland camera and moving smoothly across the bay bridge. we continue on the biggest wind event to hit the bay area so far this year. this morning about 225,000 pg&e customers are without power all across northern california. a live look at that pg&e outage map there on your screen. the north bay, the east bay heavily affected as well as parts of the south bay. pg&e tells us the weather should be safe enough for them to start looking at the lines and restoring power later tonight and possibly into tomorrow. we have live team coverage this morning on those whipping winds. bob redell tracking the situation for us in the east bay.

let's start with sharon katsuda and the largest number of power outages right now. sharon? >> reporter: we do have some good news. in the downtown sonoma area the lights are still on. take a look around me here. you can see what is left behind from the winds that kicked through overnight, big tree limbs on the street along with a lot of leaves that have fallen from the trees. now this is the biggest wind event of the year. the wind whipping around the flag of the video we shot. four school districts in sonoma county are closing because of this. all schools are closed today. no in-person or virtual classes. one district is closing all schools but kids are asked to do their own learning at home. this in response to the power

shutoffs. the deli is usually open well past sundown but the owner had to lock up early because customers couldn't shop in the dark. his last customer of the day came in for some candles. they had to conduct the transaction by the light of a cell phone. business owners are learning to improvise. >> i try my best to keep everything cool and from yesterday i tried to save food and i moved some stuff to my cousin's and highway 12. they have stores over there. they have power over there. it's not easy. >> reporter: the biggest concerns are the winds that are sweeping through the area. you can see behind me there is a very eager trash collector here having to cut through all the leaves here and the debris. and do be careful because our photographer on the way here we were experiencing gusty winds

and he said definitely two hands on the wheel because of the gusty winds. i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> we were wondering what all that racket was behind you, sharon. folks get to work but we were concerned maybe it was the wind. maybe you're up early because the winds woke you up. i didn't need my alarm clock this morning. the winds brought down trees. bob redell is live in dublin where there was a scare at the santa rita jail overnight because of the winds. bob, tell us about that. >> reporter: it's been gusty out here similar to what sharon is experiencing in the north bay. my photographer and i were commenting how cold this wind is as well. which is good in the context of decreasing the risk of a fire danger this is a tree that came down in the parking lot of the santa rita jail in dublin. we believe it might have fallen down on a squad car.

no one was hurt. a sense of how windy it is. you can see the trees brust willing in the wind here. let's go to livermore just east of here about ten miles. you see a large section of a tree broke off. federal security officers are out early this morning and checked it out. they expect to have that cleared up shortly if not already. to san leandro from davis street to 580. clearing the roadway for what may or may not be a commute with the pandemic. this is in case the winds were to knock down equipment. here in alameda county over 16,000 customers are without

power. contra costa county over 15,000. the assistant manager of lafayette ace hardware store says it's been extremely busy and people have been stocking up. the store sold out of propane gas heaters, things like that. why it's important the power be shutoff. >> oak forest and fires are very possible. the biggest thing really that worries us. >> hoping it's not as bad as they expect to be. preparing but hoping for the best. >> reporter: a look at the pg&e website has a map of the bay area. you can see a lot of the color in the east bay. most areas are impacted.

staff. the white house says pence, who is negative, won't quarantine because he's an essential worker. tracie potts, nbc news. the senate is set to vote to confirm amy coney barrett. following the passing of the late justice ruth bader ginsburg. they voted to advance judge barrett to the final confirmation vote despite democratic objections the nominee should be chosen by the winner of this year's presidential election. coming up at 5:25 on "today in the bay," the reason hundreds of people have already been banned during the pandemic from flying on delta airlines. at facebook they're preparing new rules just in case the election gets out of hand.

oakland measuring a 57-mile-per-hour wind gust and pretty high elsewhere as well. a look at our mountain wind gusts and what's ahead in a few minutes. kari, you talked about the wind. that's a note from chp as well. a map of silicon valley. the highlighted yellow is where our index registered gusty winds overnight and visually as we look at the camera as well. you can tell by the look at this traffic, the shake of the camera from the rooftop in oakland, there you go. gusty conditions through oakland. and good morning. a very happy monday to you as well. american airlines is moving forward with its plan to put the 737 max back into service. once the faa says it is safe to do so. the max 8 version was grounded after nearly back-to-back fatal crashes overseas. federal regulators have been working with boeing to solve the

problems at the root of the crashes and american says it will allow the flying public to tour the airplane and ask questions of mechanics and pilots at select airports in an effort to settle any fears that people have. facebook is preparing some emergency measures should the election not go smoothly. measures it says it developed for at-risk countries with shaky governments, places like myanmar. "the wall street journal" reports facebook's plan calls for slowing down reposts of some material. and tweaking the news feed. facebook has not implemented the plan yet. they tell the journal they would only deploy the tools in dire circumstances such as election related violence but the company needs to be prepared for all possibilities. it's now been three months since the speaker and the white house started coronavirus stimulus talks. the third side in all of this mitch mcconnell's senate has

been clear it will not pass a bill pelosi and the white house may hammer out. the senate goes on break after voting on the new supreme court justice. all sides seem to agree they want more stimulus checks sent out to americans but they can't agree on the other parts of the deal. democrats want more spending as in many cases does the white house as well, but they're not getting support from the senate. nasa says it will announce something about the moon today. we believe it was discovered by a sophia project, an infrared telescope on an airplane. water on the moon, even in the form of ice. as you know, you get two hs and an 0, that's hydrogen and oxygen that can be used to keep astronauts alive. >> all right, we're looking forward to that. big news. thank you, scott.

"the wall street journal" reports the department of health and human services is dropping a holiday ad campaign that would have offered santa claus performers along with mrs. claus and elf performers.

the campaign was to cost $250 million. but we hear everything else at the north pole is still on track. trending there morning in case you need a monday reminder halloween is this saturday. maybe a little more concerning with your candy buying and trick-or-treating mostly on hold. the "l.a. times" is releasing the annual power rankings to help you out. top of the list, reese's peanut butter cups. second is kit kat followed by butterfinger. twix is in fourth place. the "today" show has been doing their own as well. a job with some amazing perks. >> you have to see this. a u.p.s. driver in new orleans on his rounds makes it a point to snap selfies with pets. he started about two years ago.

this is so cute. he started taking pictures every friday. now it's gone viral. he says he gets thousands of likes on instagram. i just followed him myself because i could use a little dose of that on my friday mornings. that's nice to see because our mail man just runs the other way if a dog even looks at him. i feel bad. sorry. >> probably bad experiences. >> not with our dog, though. he thinks he's a savage. >> you'd better hold the leash tightly this morning. it is a windy one out there especially if you have a little dog like me. yeah, you don't want it to blow away in the wind. it's been quite gusty out there. let's take a look at our live view in walnut creek. to some of our mountain tops, you were expecting the winds to really gust up pretty high. mt. st. helena went above and beyond that with a high wind

gust at 89 miles an hour. middletown had a wind gust of 71. we saw calaveras road at 63 miles per hour. mt. umunhum topped 59. mt. diablo 56. it's still windy this morning. we're looking at the high winds through at least 11:00 and that's when the wind advisory will expire. but here we are at 11:00 and the winds coming in from the north and northeast at about 35 miles per hour in a lot of these areas. then as we go into this evening, it starts to calm down a little bit for the south bay, still may be gusty in the north bay. for tonight into early tomorrow morning that's the reason why the red flag warning and the high fire danger does continue through tomorrow morning, but we're going to see those temperatures reaching into the mid-70s and our seven-day forecast shows a lot of 70s throughout the week. we should have some much more quiet conditions after tomorrow. but then we'll be turning our attention to the potential of

another high wind event by the end of the week as we look into the week it's going to warm up just slightly. a lot to watch out here for as our temperatures are very cold but those winds are still pretty high. how is it looking right now for the morning commute, mike? kari, it looks like we have two new incidents on my map. they're not traffic incidents. they just popped up from our traffic report. let's get a look. we have a couple san jose incidents, one looks like a crash and another is a hazard. both are small fires that got reported to our traffic system so they just put a marker in there. they'll probably clear in the next couple of minutes but small fires sparking around because of fallen wires throughout the overnight hours. we're looking to southbound 84, westbound, i should say, coming down to 680. that's where a new crash off the roadways just past the ge plant. very narrow there. it will be a distraction. a live look at the bay bridge. the bay bridge itself seeing more volume. most of the bridges do have wind

>> reporter: good morning. last fall sutter health sent frank mccormack a bill for $317. he mailed the check for the full amount, but months afterward he got calls and notices from bill collectors demanding payment. frank says he sent proof from his bank showing sutter had cashed that check, but the calls continued. so frank turned to us. we reach out to sutter health. it didn't get back to us, but

gusts. as we go through the time line, here we are at 11:00 this morning still seeing the winds in the north bay at about 35 miles an hour, about 15 to 20 elsewhere. still gusty. the winds gradually start to relax but a very windy morning. we'll take a look at the wind gusts we've already measured coming up. mike, how is it looking driving to work this morning? >> we have one crash causing a problem. the map shows you westbound 84 cutting through. little valley keeps you from 680, farther back at stanley. that's fine. that gets you around the issue much like the rest of the tri-valley moving smoothly. look at our view from the mt. st. bruno area. the camera moves, too. the mountain top and the bridges get those gusty winds. >> we continue our team coverage

on this biggest wind event to hit the bay area so far this year. and this morning about 225,000 pg&e customers are without power all across northern california. look at the outage map on the screen that is how many people are in the dark. the north bay and the east bay heavily affected as well as part of the south bay. and we are tracking problems out there this morning. we go to alameda county and dublin. bob redell is there to show us the damage overnight from the wind and we're concerned about the jail? >> reporter: very gusty and cold. we're outside santa clarita jail where the tree came down. this is why we're under the red flag warning. firefighters are taking this seriously. case in point earlier this

morning at 12:45 a brush fire burned about three to four acheers in castro valley along 580 before the eden canyon exit. alameda county fire responded with 11 units. that's how aggressive they are. an outage map from pg&e, public safety power shutoffs throughout the bay area especially in the north bay are without power. residents stocked up on supplies. the local ace hardware store tells us they sold out of lanterns, power generators. they've been sold out for days. >> we have an emergency generator and spent the whole morning getting it to run. it's running now.

>> i am virtually out of flashlights, those type of things. just huge numbers. >> i am staying home. >> reporter: you're going to ride out the red flag warning? >> i am. >> reporter: pg&e's website indicates power could be turned back on by 10:00. it just depends on where you live and when the wind dies down. the people who work at pg&e have to go out in the field before they turn the electricity back on. reporting live in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. as bob was just telling us overnight howling winds in some cases doing more than just keeping people away. in concord it took down a tree near concord high school. luckily no one was hurt. a number of parks in the east bay will be closed due to the strong winds.

several parks in the east bay regional park district were closed over the weekend as the dangerous weather moved in. the goal is to keep people out of places like children's park and the berkeley hills to reduce fire danger and lower other risks. helping local agencies in some of those threatened areas. and the oakland zoo, add them to the list of places that may shut down over the next couple of days due to the power shutoff. it was told it will likely have to close today and tomorrow. a final determination will be made. >> several school districts are closing because of the power shutoffs and the threat of wildfire. the only school district only for in-person hybrid learning is the napa valley school district. four school districts in sonoma county closing. the guerneville, ken wood and montgomery announced all schools are closed today. no in-person classes and no

virtual classes either. the monte rio is closing schools but students are supposed to do their own learning at home. you can find a full list at nbcbayarea.com. more women than men are exercising the right to vote and more have since ronald reagan back in 1984. we talked to a lot of voters including a lot of women who are casting ballots in this year's election. up to now 51% of california's voters were women and they've been more likely to vote democratic. 2020 is a unique year. the balance of the supreme court is about to shift with the imminent confirmation of amy coney barrett and the incumbent president trump has been accused of sexual misconduct against women and the vice presidential nominee is a california woman.

we asked bay area women voters how this impacts their vote. >> i love seeing kamala and that she's part of the election and there's a female voice but i don't think that changes my vote. >> i try to support women candidates when they align with my views. >> there's a lot of stuff around women's reproductive rights and things like that that i think is important as women to make sure we're voting the right way so we can all have a choice in that matter. >> there's also prop 16 which would restore affirmative action in california which allows universities and government offices to also consider gender in hiring decisions. this was outlawed 25 years ago. vote by mail ballots are arriving in the office of the county registrar of voters by the thousands.

starting out with still high winds across the bay area. i want to take you around the bay and what to expect. we're starting out with gusty winds. concord reaching up to 78 degrees. 73 in san francisco. and some upper 70s for a high today in napa. it's still going to be gusty and we're going to be tracking that as well as our fire danger. the red flag warning continues through tomorrow morning for parts of the north bay. that will expire for parts of the santa cruz mountains later today. still breezy conditions and low humidity. we have to watch out for the potential of any fire spreading rapidly through at least tomorrow morning. mike, you've been tracking how the wind is impacting the commute. how is it looking? the tri-valley commuters, hold off for one second because i want to point out at the bottom of the screen kari is talking about winds. reports of fallen cables, that's what's going on in san jose and

tracking the winds and it's been rocking through the past several hours. 57-mile-per-hour wind gusts and even higher for our mountain tops. a lot of blown down tree limbs and still the potential of power outages. we'll be tracking that in the forecast coming up. and some power lines down, too, kari. lots of little fires reported quickly being put out, thankfully. the crash has been there for a while. west 84 down to sunol out of livermore, pleasanton. you can use the dublin interchange for your smoother route. the backup at the bay bridge continues to build over the last couple of minutes. we've seen it double, almost triple in size. those metering lights likely turning on. also windy, laura. back to you. >> california's record fire season is dragging on. more than 5,000 across the state are now working to contain more than 20 fires. you can see where they're burning. on saturday alone cal fire says

crews attacked 12 new fires, none got out of hand. a new video from contra costa county firefighters sprang into action to knock down this fire here on your screen. you can see the wind whipping the flames around. this happened about 9:00 at night at the u-haul business on monument in concord. unfortunately, t -- fortunatelye firefighters got it under control. they aren't saying yet if they know how it started. it's 5:46 right now. to decision 2020 as coronavirus continues. >> scott mcgrew, several people very close to the vice president now also have covid. >> though we understand the vice president himself continues to feel well and test negative. five different aides in his inner circle have tested positive. but mike pence continues to campaign in public. he was in north carolina over the weekend. north carolina along with georgia and texas are turning out to be key states for the campaign. here is the vice president.

>> early voting has already started. i checked on the way here. the president just cast his vote yesterday. karen and i voted back in the hoosier state. so men and women of north carolina, you have to get it done. >> now pence's counterpart kamala harris campaigned in michigan over the weekend. you'll recall some members of harris' campaign team tested positive earlier this month. she shut down her travel temporarily as a safety measure. senator harris suggests the vice president do that as well. >> he should be following the guidelines. we're doing it. we have modeled the right and good behavior and them should take our lead. >> president trump was in new hampshire, his campaign pointed out repeatedly and correctly, that joe biden hasn't visited new hampshire in quite some time. then again, biden does have a big lead there. now even as the president visited new hampshire over the weekend the big paper there out of manchester endorsed joe biden. the first democratic

presidential candidate the paper has endorsed in more than 100 years. union leader is one of the most prominent conservative newspapers. the paper said of president trump, president trump is not always 100% wrong but he is 100% wrong for america. a campaign stop in north carolina over the weekend president trump predicted nobody would be talking about the pandemic as of a week of wednesday. that would be the day after election day. >> turn on television, covid, covid, covid, covid, covid. a plane goes down. 500 people dead. they don't talk about it. covid, covid, covid, covid. by the way, on november 4th you won't hear about it anymore. covid! covid! >> now there has not been a plane crash recently. we assume the president was speaking hypothetically. we did just get the national numbers from johns hopkins, 2,155 americans died from covid-19 since friday. in airplane terms that's 11 737s

crashing or five wide-bodied boeing 777. the senate is set to approve the nomination of amy coney barrett to be the next associate justice of the supreme court. we believe one republican, susan collins, of maine, the most senior woman senator in the party, will vote no. she says she's doing that to remain consistent to the party's promise not to push through a nomination close to the election. not because she has any qualms of her qualifications. the candidates get that much more frequent on the campaign trail. we'll tweet about it. you can find me on twitter. i'm @scottmcgrew. >> thanks so much, scott. we have some relief for businesses in shasta county to report about. the redding reporting the state friday agreed to move the county back up from the most restrictive purple tier to the red tier. they spark an outcry from business owners to reconsider. the state reversed course later

give you a reason to vote in person. meteorologist kari hall is taking a view from the sky, sky ranger overhead looking for damage from the wind storm. >> yes. so we just want sky ranger and it's heading over to the east bay to see what we can see from above, if we have some downed tree limbs or what's going on because we know that those winds have been very high. this is a look at the view we're seeing right now from sky ranger as it is moving over, of course, a very dark bay area. we'll see if we can see some downed tree limbs or power lines and also assess the damage as we're still getting some really high wind gusts this morning. we'll continue to watch that. also if you're heading out the door and you see some tree limbs or any kind of damage, send it to me on social media. i'm at kari hall weather. i've re-tweeted so we can see what's happening around the bay area. let me show you how high the winds were earlier this morning.

we had a wind gust on mt. st. helena that topped 89 miles an hour. it has been roaring out there and for our winds around some of our higher elevations it's been up to 71 in middletown. calaveras road 63-mile-per-hour gusts and mt. diablo a gust of 56 miles per hour. looking at our winds still this high wind event continues through at least 11:00. and then winds will calm down. this morning we have a freeze warning in he can for parts of lake and mendocino county through 9:00 this morning. so we're watching out for the potential of some damaged crops. what's happening here is we have high pressure just off to the west of us. low pressure to the east causing those winds to rush off the shore and it also is giving us some very low humidity increasing our fire danger for today. so as we go into the forecast,
