and "today in the bay" starts right now for you on this friday morning. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia but i can't hear you so i'm going to work this little technical glitch out right now and let you take it away. >> i will take it away from here. mike has a look at the commute, but first kari hall with a look at the forecast. we are starting out with some mostly clear skies and also some nice, cool temperatures. as we take a look at what to expect for the week, we're going to be a touch cooler for today with our afternoon highs mostly in the 60s and 70s. but we do have a great weekend ahead as we celebrate halloween and, of course, we'll remind you at least 100 more times to set your clocks back one hour as daylight saving time ends this sunday. but looking at our temperatures today once again really nice as we are looking at highs that will reach into the upper 70s

and low 80s. we'll talk more about this coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the early morning commute? kari, the speed sensors are looking great although i saw a little slowing on 84. very early for this. we'll check on that. the golden gate bridge, no warnings, no problems -- oh, one car coming toward us. a clear view. this is a great start. 101 there is a stall i'm checking on. on the east bay getting over to the city a light drive as well. being friday we expect a lighter flow of traffic. that's still the pattern but we will have more cars, pretty good right now, and no delays to the maze. thank you, mike. health experts this year, unfortunately, making halloween less of a treat this year for the little ones. the real trick will be convincing adults not to gather. in san francisco people are already in the mood to celebrate. on halloween night the castro district is a popular hot spot. city leaders are telling people

not to gather there halloween night due to covid-19. and it really seems people are getting the message. >> this year we're not having the big party. >> children will be celebrating differently as well. san francisco police gave some kids a safe treat yesterday. a chance to put on a could the to costume, have some candy and have fun. happening today the most famous doctor in the country is heading to the south bay. dr. anthony fauci will meet with bay area leaders to discuss how to lower case numbers while allowing for safe reopenings. joining him on the panel public health officer dr. sara cody, silicon valley leadership group is hosting this event. and today -- laura? >> yeah, today more bay area movie theaters, you should be happy about this one, marcus, they're reopening. century san francisco center and some cinemark theaters.

marcus likes to go to the movies. they will open eight locations including sunnyvale and san francisco. theaters can seat up to 50% capacity depending on the county. eating and drinking are not allowed inside theaters in san francisco and santa clara county, but it's okay in alameda county. another big bay area school district now on track to resume in-person learning. mt. diablo schools will switch to a hybrid model starting january 11th with more than 30,000 students in the school district, one of the largest in the bay area. city and community leaders in san jose will meet on the steps of city hall to talk about the political ads now sending shock waves through silicon valley. silicon valley organization political action group posted that ad opposing a candidate who favors police defunding. the naacp is among many groups outraged calling the ad racist because it shows a group of black south african men rioting.

will the weather hold up? >> yeah, absolutely, it's going to be a nice weekend and i know they have events for halloween, but make sure you check ahead of time before you head out. a nice morning commute. it's pretty cool as you get out the door in the east bay with temperatures in the mid to upper 40s for the most part. after this cool start, a very comfortable late morning into the afternoon. and we are going to see more weather like this heading into the weekend as we'll see our highs today mostly in the 70s across the bay area. mike, how is it looking for that commute? >> well, looks like i just lost the monitor behind me. we'll take you right to the maps which should be going in the control room, kari, and i want to show you the one issue going on there. over on the right side of your screen you see slowing for highway 84 and that is what's going on. the slowing popped up westbound. your commute direction and

sentiment and earnings from exxon mobil and chevron. walmart is removing guns and ammunition from displays at its u.s. stores to protect customers and employees as tension have is been rising. the move comes days across the country with some worried violence could be sparked. wal mat has taken similar steps in the past. a spokesman says walmart will still sell items on request. they sell firearms in half of its more than 5,000 u.s. stores. mcdonald's has been hit with a potentially multibillion dollar lawsuit by black franchise owners who accuse of racial discrimination for steering them to underperforming areas. the latest comes after mcdonald's was sued by more than 50 black franchisees formerly in augment they allege the company placed them in undesirable city locations with high security and insurance with below average sales. mcdonald's says it wants

change the clocks. we're changing them this weekend. i guess ours wanted to be changed a little bit earlier. >> there it is. just that reminder. beep, beep, beep. >> while kari does the weather, i'm going to go get a ladder. kari, you take it away. wow, it's a little too early for that. it seems like it always starts to do that in the middle of the night. i don't know what it is about it. let's get a look at our temperatures for today. it's going to be a great one. for our afternoon highs it will be a touch cooler today compared to yesterday. we're looking at a high of 76 in downtown san jose and we'll see some upper 70s for morgan hill. gilroy reaching into the low 80s. we'll see a few 80s for the east bay, for concord and danville as well as livermore. but oakland will see the high temperatures there in the mid-70s. and it's going to be nice and breezy, a lot of sunshine. half moon bay reaches 64.

daly city 66. palo alto a high of 76 degrees. for san francisco expect it to reach into the upper 60s across the city, as we've seen that fog returning this morning. and for the north bay we'll see sonoma reaching 77 degrees. so it's going to be very comfortable today as we make plans for the weekend, still high pressure across the region giving us a fairly quiet weather pattern due to its position as it continues to move inland. by next week we'll see a storm system further to the north and we'll be watching that. it may bring us cooler air by the end of next week. in the meantime as we make halloween weekend plans it's going to be very comfortable. for our bay and inland temperatures expect it to reach up to 80 degrees. as we go into the evening it's going to cool off quickly as we are enjoying time at home for the halloween weekend. we are going to see our livermore temperatures also reaching into the low 80s for the next few days.

safe after spending 12 days missing in utah's zion national park. authorities say her story just doesn't add up. they're now launching a crime investigation. the 38-year-old woman was found half a mile from the parking area where she was last seen. the family says she may have suffered a mental breakdown. they also say she fell while hiking and became confused. new details on two wildfires burning in southern california's orange county. one, the blue ridge fire, now about 40% contained. the other the silverado fire more than 50% contained. together those fires have now burned a little under 30,000 acres and destroyed about a dozen homes. well, back to our covid coverage. state prison leaders suddenly face an unusual situation. about 200 inmates at the highest risk are refusing to move to safer cells. the new strategy is part of an effort to avoid more outbreaks like the one we saw in san quentin. the federal commissioner now in

charge of the prison health system says of the first 300 or so inmates offered that chance to transfer less than a third of them agreed to do so. in many cases it's left their legal counsel baffled. a southern california church suing over l.a. county's covid crackdown. church leaders call unwarranted. the pastor says it's following all the rules holding services online and outside with social distancing. but he says the city continues to hound them over violations. apparently a neighbor has been complaining. the church is also suing the neighbor along with the city manager. also taking new legal action southern california gyms suing the state for covid restrictions. eight gym owners in san diego county say the state restrictions are forcing them to spend thousands of dollars to comply with the order. after spending the money their businesses remain closed and are still struggling financially. the world of college
