"today in the bay's" cierra johnson looking at where to go this weekend to vote early in the bay area. but first let's check in with tracie potts. she's in washington following the final push on the campaign trail. tracie, president trump, joe biden, they're zeroing in on the midwest. >> reporter: right. they're crisscrossing each other again. yesterday it was florida. today minnesota and wisconsin,

which could be a challenge for the president. he won wisconsin four years ago, but now he's bringing a message that the coronavirus pandemic is getting better when things in wisconsin are getting worse. both presidential candidates land in wisconsin today, the state announced new restrictions this week to deal with an explosion of coronavirus cases. "the new york times" reports half the nation's cities with the highest covid rates are here. >> we can prevent the deaths of people in wisconsin by staying home. >> reporter: president trump insists things are getting better. >> it's rounding the turn. it's rounding the turn. >> reporter: but yesterday 90,000 people tested positive, shattering the previous record of 80,000 just the day before. more than 9 million cases in the u.s. and more than 200,000 lives lost. >> i'm not going to shut down the country. i'm going to shut down the

virus. >> reporter: joe biden criticized the president's crowded rally in florida. >> spending more than just coronavirus, he's spreading division and discord. >> reporter: for the second time this week medics called to a trump rally. people freezing for hours in omaha, passing out from the heat in tampa. >> five days from now we are going to win florida. >> florida, it's up to you. you hold the key. if florida goes blue, it's over. >> reporter: some say the sunshine state is the key to winning on tuesday. but don't count out the midwest. that's why they're there. the president did a clean sweep of democratic states last time around. he's hoping to do the same again this time visiting michigan. today for the second time in a week joe biden heading out to iowa. each of them making three stops in three different states. following the campaign live this

morning, i'm tracie potts, "today in the bay." california known as being a very democratic state. activists are heading to battleground states. the naacp president jethro moore this morning is heading to pennsylvania. >> i'm letting people know around the nation, around the country, around the world, we care what's happening in georgia. >> the state assembly member recently returned from canvassing in arizona and nevada asking voters there to support biden. and, laura, early voting is already in full swing. this weekend massive bay area voting centers are opening where you can actually go vote, drop off those ballots and much more. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live for us in san mateo to guide us through the week openings. cierra? >> reporter: yes, good morning. it is, in fact, a very big

weekend for many counties here in the bay area, san francisco county has had early voting for a while. today and tomorrow voting starts in several other counties. it's not only where you can early vote but drop off ballots as well. we'll break everything down. early voting kicks off this morning at 18 locations throughout the county. specifics times. you're going to want to pay close attention to those hours. a quick check will give you an exact time there. early voting at the civic center location. this polling site has been open and continues to see visitors. for some making that decision was strategic, a way to ensure their vote was cast and counted in a timely manner.

take a listen to these early voters and what they had to say about completing their voting process. >> timcalypically i do vote abs. i usually go to my polling place and drop it off on the day of. i just want to make sure i got it in this year. >> i think it's easy to vote early. you can see it's huge, the people inside. i didn't have to wait at all first thing in the morning. maybe that made it easier. there are a ton of workers inside. >> reporter: it is important to note officials are trying to figure out what happened to ballots dropped off by at least 40 voters. voters say they dropped their ballots off at the box outside of the richmond city hall on october 12th, but the office has no record of those ballots. election officials say the box has not been tampered with and the suspicious handling error in that situation. so in addition to early voting

you can drop off your ballot. so far in california 8.4 million people have already dropped off their ballots. this is where you're going to want to be. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." u.s. covid cases has pushed past 9 million. over a 24-hour period more than 109,000 new cases were reported. now that's the equivalent of one new case every second. more than 229,000 americans have died. marcus, a first in solano county, someone under the age of 65 diagnosed with covid-19 and the flu. health officials are putting out a warning to get that flu shot. medical professionals believe that's the best way to stay healthy in these uncertain times.

symptoms can be confusing. a scary situation for john navarro worried about keeping his family healthy. >> it's so important to get a covid test if you feel you've been exposed and to get your flu shot to make sure that you have some protection. >> protection is important because it could take two weeks for the flu shot to take effect. doctors say that's why it's even more important to get that shot early. more details this morning, more healdsburg officers have tested positive for covid-19. the total number is now 14. staff members were infected over a two-week period. the hospital is not considering this an outbreak because those cases were isolated from one another and each person contracted the virus outside of the hospital. a south bay church fighting

back against a mountain of covid fines. calvary chapel is facing a $300 fine for holding in-person services. the church's pastor along with other california church leaders are holding an in-person news conference later today to speak out against the fines. they plan to call out governor newsom and the santa clara county's health department. new for you this morning the pandemic is making it even easier for people to leave the bay area with san francisco and san jose seeing the biggest loss. a survey by santa clara-based found one in five have or will move. the most popular destinations texas and arizona. 5:08 right now. we'll get a look at the morning commute for mike. friday light out there but, oh, you can almost taste the weekend, guys. >> yep, taste it. >> tastes like chocolate with all the halloween trick-or-treaters. >> for me it tastes like pumpkin

microclimates and talk about where you can see beautiful fall colors coming up. and let's check the beautiful views we have. let's take this one. we'll show you the richmond to san rafael drive coming across the toll plaza. a few more cars. a little bit more light on the pavement. very light on the pavement. southbound taillights going down at the curve and down to lincoln avenue we do have commuters but not much of a commute right now. we'll see how things are shaping up. back over to you. whether you are working from home or working at work, if you may have more time to work from home because of the commute you've lost, what are you doing with that extra time? a new study says many of us are using it to work even harder. a survey by the university of chicago found 35% of us spend the time we gained having no commute on work.

15% of us spend that extra time doing things around the house. and 8% of us use that extra time gained from having no commute to fitting in a second job. walmart has told store managers to take guns and ammunition out of display cases. you can still buy weapons at walmart but you have to ask for them. they're in the back. walmart says it's a preventive measure as it worries about civil unrest in some cities. it did the same thing after the killing of george floyd. fisker will start trading its stock on the new york stock exchange today. it got there in an unusual way. something called a special purpose acquisition company, so not an ideal but a spac. you'll see more and more of these. explains what it is while trying to wake up and grab ourselves a cup of coffee maybe not the best use of our time. i'll explain these on our podcast sand hill road coming up next week.

this week we talk about the future of flight and even some of my secret travel tips. you can find sand hill road on apple podcast, google play, and even ask your echo to play it for you. well, don't let the up arrows fool you. the stock market having a terrible time. the worst performance since march. the few points gained cannot make up for the drubbing earlier. iphone sales fell. now we sort of expected that because, as i warned you yesterday, the iphone 12 came out too late to be included in apple's quarterly report. so fewer people bought the previous phone because they were waiting for the 12. that said, you have financial reports from amazon and apple and facebook and google on thursday. they collectively made more than $30 billion in profit over the last through months showing us just what behemoths they are. amazon says it now employs more than a million people. a million people.

laura and marcus, a shocking number. apple one put together some of apple's services like music into one bundle for $15. >> interesting. speaking of subscriptions, netflix users may have to prepare to sell out more money. the silicon valley giant is raising prices for its standard and premium subscriptions plus for those on the basic plan that will save $8.99 a month. the standard plan is now $13.99. premium will move to just under $18 a month. the move comes after netflix added fewer than expected new subscribers in its most recent quarter. trending this morning scarlett johansson and colin jost are married. it was revealed by meals on wheels. the nonprofit says the couple's wedding wish was to help get

i already know who kari hall is. take it away with this forecast for us. okay. let's talk about our temperatures this morning. feeling a little bit chilly out there as you're getting ready to head to work on this friday morning. maybe needing a light jacket but later today it will be amazing. really comfortable. as we head through the noon hour expect temperatures mostly in the upper 60s and low 70s. we will continue to warm up from there with a few spots reaching up to about 80 degrees. we'll see a high of 80 degrees in spots like fairfield but mostly some 70s as we go into the middle of the day. it's nice to have fall like weather and some quiet conditions expected. it will cool off fairly quickly tonight. so if you're going out to dinner, if you're going to be outside expect it to be chilly. and we're also going to have some more of this weather for tomorrow around the bay area for halloween. a lot of us will be spending halloween at home.

if you are, expect temperatures for the bay and inland areas reaching into the upper 70s and then cooling down into the upper 60s at about 7:00. and then you can continue to see those temperatures falling as we go into the nighttime hours. now if you're able to make a road trip this weekend, i want to show you some places where you can see some beautiful fall colors. right now the peak of the fall colors are happening at about 6,000 to 7,000 feet in elevation. you can see what's going on with a lot of the bay area and northern california not yet starting to really bloom with those fall colors but around the sierra it is near peak. you can check out this map yourself before you make the road trip at californiafallcolor.com. let's head over to mike now for not people making a road trip yet but heading to work. >> we'll look at those colors you have on your map and you know we judge the seasons changing by the change in the flavors. so now pumpkin spice latte.

developing now the national guard is set to arrive in philadelphia over the next few days following several nights of unrest. following the deadly police shooting of a black man police say was armed with a knife. the man's family members say they don't want the officers to

be charged and believe the shooting happened due to a lack of training. federal authorities arrested an alleged white supremacist leader and one of his associates in part because of this photo that was taken in december. police say one family was terrorized when they showed up, they say to intimidate someone, but showed up at the wrong home. michigan's attorney general was charged -- has charged them with multiple felonies. trening now to the latest storm leaving a path of destruction across the south, zeta hit louisiana before pushing to the east coast. this morning still more than 1 million homes without power. >> reporter: united airlines is ramping up testing but in the latest case at no cost to

now 680 north to auto mall is where we have a crash blocking the fast lane. off the shoulder there at german auto mall. the other side of the bay, i told you i would show you the peninsula. that's why it's moving at speed. back to you. thank you very much, mike. take a look at this. at 5:32 some breaking news, a major earthquake just struck off the coast of turkey. it's a preliminary magnitude 7.0. this is video we found this morning on twitter. you can clearly see here already damage reported. it looks like this building just buckled onto itself. a lot of debris. the epicenter is about 45 miles southeast. we don't have word of any injuries but very apparent some buildings have collapsed. we'll continue to get more information and bring it to you throughout the newscast. okay, well, the cdc, leaders

recommending against traditional trick-or-treating for halloween night. bob redell is live in livermore. talk to us about what kids should do. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. the center for disease control and prevention isn't telling you to not send your kids out to go trick-or-treating. they just don't want to you do it in the traditional way where they walk up to the front door, ring the doorbell and come in close contact with somebody handing them candy who is not in their household or who is outside their covid bubble. instead our government's doctors and scientists recommending people leave bags of candy or treats at the end of the driveway or yard where kids can pick it up. keep socially distanced and stay away from anyone else outside of their bubble. the cdc recommends against the following high-risk activities. trunk-or-treating where candy is handed out from trunks of lined up cars, indoor costume parties,

indoor haunted houses since lots of people are screaming and spreading germs. now take a look at this video. this is san francisco, celebrations in the castro district during a typical halloween. thousands of people will be celebrating. this year city supervisor rafael mandelman is recommending people stay home to stop the spread of covid-19. >> we are asking people to stay home. if they want to come during the day and go to a restaurant or do a little shopping, that's okay, as long as we don't see -- >> it makes sense to not have the big party. >> reporter: alternative ways to celebrate halloween this year cdc recommends outdoor costume parades, parties, movie nights, again, as long as they're outdoors, a haunted forest. we had some in the area.

those are okay as long as they are open air and one way in the direction of the flow of traffic. reporting live in livermore, outside a reasonably scary house, bob redell, "today in the bay." the most famous doctor in the country is heading to the south bay. dr. anthony fauci will discuss how to lower the numbers while allowing safe reopenings. joining him on the panel santa clara county public health officer, dr. sara cody. today more bay area movie theaters are reopening along with some cinemark needers. amc is set to open eight locations including sunnyvale and san francisco. theaters are allowed to see up to 50% capacity depending on the county. but eating or drinking is not allowed in some counties. it's okay in alameda county.

another big bay area school district on track to resume in-person learning. mt. diablo schools will switch to a hybrid model starting january 11 with 40,000 students. one of the largest in the bay area. >> california has 2.7 million registered voters between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. and there may be more by the time all the new registrations are processed. some will be voting for the first time. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us now with a look at the issues getting those young voters energized. kris? >> reporter: marcus, i don't know if you remember the first time you got to vote, but mine was a presidential election so it was super exciting. i did it in the lobby of my college dorm. it was exciting for me but it was pretty uneventful as far as elections go, certainly compared to today's standards. now the first time voters in this election will really have a story to tell from voting during

a pandemic to fbi reports of voter intimidation coming from iran and russia to an incumbent president who is unlike any president we've seen before. now according to the secretary of state 60-day report about 13% of california's registered voters will be 18 to 25 on election day. the bay area ranges from 13% in santa clara county, which is the highest, to 10% in san francisco's sonoma county, the lowest. we expect new numbers from the secretary of state later today in their 15-day report. now young voters we talked with say they consider climate change and social change primarily but they consider who leads their local community. >> at the same time i didn't worry about getting anything. that's my opinion. >> i think that's what i would personally see the biggest impact, my local community. >> i'm seeing who will be able to get us through the next four years.

>> reporter: now according to the youth voting initiative, young voters tend to vote later, and they tend to vote in person, which will be a different experience this year because of the pandemic. more seasoned voters urge them to get out and vote anyway. >> no matter how insignificant you feel. you'd better get in and vote. >> vote early if possible and tell your friends. >> take advantage of all the information that's online. >> just do it. i don't care who you vote for. do it. >> reporter: that's how i feel about it, too. it is a good habit to create and it doesn't matter who you vote for. the more voices the better the representation is. remember your ballot has to be dropped of or postmarked in order to count. most of the ballots arrive too late and if you've been procrastinating a great election guide on nbcbayarea.com, the

smaller measures and propositions that will affect your community probably more than just about any other on the ballot. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> there are certainly a lot of them. thank you, kris. city and community leaders will meet to discuss the political ads sending shock waves through silicon valley. political action group posted the ad opposing the city council candidate. the naacp is among many calling the ad racist because it shows a group of black south african men rioting. among the developments yesterday the ceo of the group stepped down. the group is now investigating the ad and how it became a reality. today councilmembers will lead a news conference at 11:00 a.m. 5:39 for you this morning and it is a special day happening today all about the lemurs and those lemurs at san

the high temperature today we're up to 82 in ukiah today and as cool as 64 in half moon bay. so we have temperatures everywhere in between. for tomorrow a lot of us planning to celebrate halloween at home or maybe walk around the neighborhood and check out the halloween decorations. we're going to see temperatures for the bay and inland areas up to 80 degrees and then cooling down quickly as we go into the evening hours. expect it to drop back into the mid-60s by 8:00. we talk about this, the full moon this weekend will be a blue moon. we call it that because it's the second full moon in a calendar month and is the first time we've had a full moon on halloween since 2001. so enjoy that. it will help light your path as you're out walking around the neighborhood. we're in for some very quiet weather over the next several days and actually warmer than normal temperatures. and we're seeing all of these storm systems moving into the pacific northwest.

meteorologist kari hall has a look at that. and we are starting out with some nice, cool weather for the bay area this morning, but take a look at our highs for today. enjoy some time outside. temperatures up to 81 in clear lake. 68 in san francisco. 76 in palo alto. we'll talk about the halloween forecast coming up. how is it looking for the commute? kari, a live look through oakland is not what you want to see. we'll show folks because we want to talk you through it. the taillights 880 as you head past the coliseum. if you've been watching the last half hour you notice much less flowing, much better movement north past 66 and high street. the map shows you the speed sensors improve. i believe all lanes are now cleared north 880 at 29th. the construction from overnight. the bay bridge toll plaza for more build. the rest of the bay looks great.
