i am anxious in the sense in light of the new vote by mail we won't know what's going to happen until much later than tuesday. >> right now at 4:30, the clock is ticking with just one day to go until election day. the preparations being made across the bay area as emotions remain high. and falling behind, the all new report shows just how big an impact distance learning is having on local students. plus, big changes coming to yosemite national park and the help to area businesses still struggling to survive among the pandemic. good monday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike is here and kari as well. let's get you started with the following this monday morning. kari, how are we starting out this workweek? we are starting out very warm. we've had temperatures reaching into the 80s around the bay area. we're going to see more of the same today. but as we go through the week it will gradually cool off and we're even watching out for some nearby rain chances. it doesn't look like we'll see a lot of that here in the bay area but take a look at these highs, reach into the 80s. we'll talk more about this coming up. mike, any issues for the early morning commute? kari, for the early morning commute, yes. there's something up in the north bay. let's take a big look and we're not seeing the slowing out of the altamont just yet. maybe some people are taking advantage of the time change. i'm happy to have another hour. i've circled a disabled vehicle

on the shoulder. just a distraction. back to you. all right, thank you very much. well, right now we're more than 24 hours from when election official also begin counting tens of thousands of ballots cast over the weekend. many people spent the weekend visiting in-person voting sites throughout the state in the hopes of avoiding election day overcrowding. as of this morning nearly 10 million people have cast their ballots ahead of tomorrow. that's nearly two-thirds of all votes cast in california during the 2016 presidential election. >> voter turnout is breaking records across the bay area, across the country for that matter. in marin county they have been processing ballots and fielding concerns from voters. more than 121,000 have been returned. it exceeds the number cast in the primary. >> in the march primary our whole total voter turnout was around 116,000.

so we've already received more than voted in the march election. >> as the election draws closer the stress for a lot more people according to the american psychological association. people from all political parties are saying this election year is very stressful. and businesses across the country are preparing for the possibility of protests or demonstrations on election night. as we've been reporting boards have gone up across san francisco in case things turn violent. this was the scene at union square where 75% of those businesses are taking precautions. sfpd says there are no known strets threats but additional officers will be working tuesday just in case. anger surrounding a political ad by the political action committee still having a ripple effect. the group's ceo stepped down last week in the midst of the backlash. today some 50 south bay political leaders will gather

outside svo offices to distance themselves from the controversy. the news conference starts at 1:00 a.m. if you have any problems while dropping off your ballot or while voting election day, let us know. head to nbcbayarea.com/votingproblems or tweet us using t the #weinvestigate. we're just learning about new infections. more than 3,100 new cases and five more deaths were added to the state's overall totals. in california there are now more than 935,000 confirmed infections and more than 17,000 confirmed deaths. this is since the start of the pandemic. starting tomorrow more drive-through testing is planned at the santa clara county fairgrounds due to demands that site can accommodate up to 2,500 tests per day. that's up from 1,000 a day when the site first opened back in august. santa clara health leaders are increasing staff to accommodate the increased testing. you can still make an

appointment. new this morning with the advent of online distance learning surging, more grades are going down. according to the mercury news, students with more than one failing grade are up nearly 10% compared to last year. of the mount diablo district that number is up more than 11% compared with the last two academic years. school districts in the north bay are reporting similar. a new search for a police chief. eddie garcia announced plans to step down effective december 12th. tonight is the first in a series of community meetings designed to encourage the public's input. that meeting will be held in even council district before city leaders can start gathering a field of candidates. helping others to make it struggling in the bay.

later this morning families facing eviction despite the current moratorium. they've organized a news conference at the home of one family they say is among those now facing eviction. yosemite national park easing restrictions. you don't need a reservation to actually visit. the park put a reservation system in to make sure that popular spots didn't get too crowded. visitors are still urged to follow cdc guide lines. if you are heading out -- look, i don't know what the weather was in yosemite but this weekend it was really nice. it was nice and it was also very warm. here we are in the beginning of november and we're still talking about temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. let's get out the door in the north bay us a get ready to head to work. it's also a very cool start. we're going to see that over the next several hours.

ready to head out the door, just a heads-up we are seek smoky, hazy conditions around the bay area. you've probably noticed that over the weekend. we will have moderate air quality today especially around the bay where we're seeing the numbers well above that threshold of 50 where we have some good air quality. so looking at those numbers if you are sensitive to wildfire smoke you do need to limit your time outside, and we're also seeing some well above normal temperatures. we'll talk more about this as well as what to expect throughout the end of the week that's coming up in a few minutes. kari, while you're talking about the smoke and the haze, the golden gate bridge, there's a little low clouds drifting through. a live look, we see no problems for the drivers. you're well versed as you make your way across the span. no warning from chp. and then you see what you have. further down 101 take a live look at palo alto. a good drive here.

northbound we see slowing in about the next 20 minutes. up past willow and to marsh and there may be some construction there. on the east bay everything looks clear and, again, the update for ace train number 1 contrary to the initial alert, only a minor delay. it's running again. there was track maintenance. they finished that early. don't we all like to finish work a little bit early. this is seema mody with your cnbc business headlines. wall street is set to open higher, amid ongoing concerns around coronavirus and the impact it could have on the global economy. traders also bracing for the election where a contested result could delay much-needed stimulus. stocks are coming off a negative week. the dow suffering its worst week and month in march.

morning and into lunch time. we'll see it mostly in the 60s and 70s but really starting to warm up in dublin. we'll be at 81 degrees at lunch time and continuing to heat up as we reach into the mid to upper 80s in a few spots. san francisco will also have warm temperatures and we'll see a high in the mid-80s. we're going to cool off into the low 70s. if you're going out for a walk later this evening. now as we go into early tomorrow morning, we're looking at more of the same, a chilly start but then as we go into the week high pressure that's keeping it warm will start to move away and gradually will cool off. i'm watching this storm system that's expected to make it here by friday. it's going to provide some significant cooling but may bring in some spotty showers nearby. a lot of the rain stays to the north but then as it continues to move to the south, it may bring just enough of some light,

spotty showers especially by the end of the weekend. we'll have to watch out for that nearby the bay area. that time line of rain could be very spotty on this sunday. that's something we'll be watching and fine-tuning as the week goes along. the main trend we'll really notice here will be the big cooldown we'll see in spots like concord. we go from 84 today to 64 degrees for a high on saturday. mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute? kari, just a little bit of a change. a good thing you mentioned that sunset. of course things are different now. so today when you leave work for if you go to work and it's darker, people bug out of work early. 6:30, it'll be dark by then. a look outside, the early morning commute as over on the right side there wasn't really any slowing out of the altamont pass until ten minutes ago, a couple minutes later. we're going to skip over that. a crash in byron reported on

byron highway. that may be an issue. the person reports their prius is pretty messed up. that's a quote. the good news is the person was okay and called chp. highway 37 there's a crash near there. i'll talk about that coming up. back to you. los angeles police officer is recovering this morning following an officer involved shooting at a grocery store. it happened last night after a gunfight between police and the suspect inside the store. one officer was hit. that suspect ran out of the store, able to hide for about 45 minutes before surrendering to police. he was taken to the hospital but was not shot in the gunfight. the officer is expected to survive. in east contra costa county home security cameras captured gunshots breaking up a party in brentwood. you heard the situation there

and in this video from neighbors you can see the chaotic scene, cars driving away, people running in all directions. investigators say it started with a disagreement, a 23-year-old woman was struck but we're told not seriously hurt. >> a prison inmate dies from covid symptoms saturday. that inmate was housed at avenal. 79 have died statewide from the virus. as covid-19 cases continue to rise across our state, some counties are having to delay their reopening plans. this is the criteria each county must meet in order to move into a less restrictive status. l.a. county is in the most restrictive purple tier and confirmed 1,500 new infections yesterday. until daily case numbers drop, current restrictions will remain in place. in the meantime san diego county almost regressed into the purple tier last month due to its
