but the question was what about pennsylvania i said, you have to leave 5% for the cheating and when the supreme court gave you an extension, they made a very dangerous situation, and i mean dangerous, physically dangerous. >> tomorrow we can put an end to a presidency that has fanned the flames of hate across this nation, pouring gasoline on every racial incident in the country. >> election day 2020, and not a moment too soon as almost 100 million have already voted and tens of millions more will do so at voting booths today.
4:01 am
from pennsylvania avenue to main street. preparing for unrest as businesses and major buildings are boarded up just in case. after a year of protests, civil unrest, and all under the umbrella of covid, how is president trump's message of law and order really playing out in the suburbs. believe it or not. election stress disorder is a real thing we'll tell you how to recognize it and deal with it. "early today" starts right now good morning i'm phillip mena. >> glad you're with us on this crucial day. i'm frances rivera the rallies, onslaught of campaign ads all led to this election day in america. it was a clean sweep in new hampshire for joe biden picking up all five votes. today roughly 71% of the votes have been cast
4:02 am
today president trump will hold an election night event at the white house while joe biden will continue campaigning in pennsylvania nbc's tracie potts will join us in wilmington where biden will watch the results come in. tracie, this is it. >> reporter: this is it and we are here at biden headquarters, the stage, the monitors set behind me for his drive-in rally that could happen tonight, could happen later depending how the results roll in. it was a whirlwind last full day for the candidates with president trump logging nearly 2,500 miles in a day, landing for his final rally in michigan where he arguing he will easily win the state that he narrowly won in 2016. >> we're going to win the state of michigan so easily. we're going to win it like last time, but let's give me a little bit of a margin here
4:03 am
we can do it we can be a little bit superstitious, right and the best is yet to come. the best is yet to come. we will make america great again, thank you, michigan go out and vote. >> reporter: meantime joe biden wrapping things up last night with a star-studded rally in pittsburgh where he began his campaign, picking up on president trump's cry on the campaign trail from his supporters and suggested by the president himself that he might fire infectious disease expert dr. anthony fauci. >> people of this nation have suffered they've sacrificed for nine months last night trump said he was going to fire dr. fauci. isn't that wonderful i've got a better idea elect me, and i'm going to hire dr. fauci, and we're going to fire donald trump. >> reporter: so the results are
4:04 am
rolling in this evening. we'll find out if there's some sort of result tonight or if we may be waiting until tomorrow morning or even longer back to you. >> i don't know. we've got to strap ourselves in for a next crucial long few days. the race is on americans head to the polls today and render their final verdicts joining us to share a bit of history and break things down for us, jonathan allen john, good morning we know the swing states are more important than ever democrats hope to capitalize in states like georgia and florida. which ones do you think will be the ones to tip the scale today? >> i'm in the big state everyone is keeping their eye on, pennsylvania most experts are looking at that state as the one that's probably
4:05 am
the biggest in terms of the opportunity for joe biden to flip it and to really change the electoral college map. in order to do that, he would have to win a couple of other states trump won last time, michigan and wisconsin are the ones most readily identified but the other possibility is florida. so for folks looking for early closing polls on the east coast, pennsylvania may take a little while longer to count votes. they may have some legal issues. florida, we may get a sense of early in the night. >> jonathan, you're talking about, you know, states taking a little bit longer, the legal issues there you've got president trump who said the results not declared on election night should not be counted. president trump said he will declare victory if he's ahead. how likely is it we'll have a clear winner tonight and what do you see as far as the next few days >> number one, there's a very important issue in democracy
4:06 am
one person, one vote if a person votes and doesn't get counted for the next day or two, that's not unusual. it's very common the counseling goes on in all kinds of races across america every four years, every two years, every off-year election number one, that's something to keep in mind as people think about that the other thing is we may see an election that ends in a legal battle, you know i think we'll have at least a sense tonight of whether that's going to -- whether that's going to be headed in that direction or if we will have a more clear winner even if it takes a day or two. >> how concerned are you about these possible delays, legal and otherwise. is that what worries you most about tonight? >> not at all. so i think that's a normal process. it just takes a while to count arizona's recent senate races have been like that, california and the democratic primary sometimes it takes a while to
4:07 am
count votes. but what i think there is a lot of concern about is the public is very agitated right now, both trump supporters and critics of donald trump, and so i think it's important for folks to remember they have a voice in democracy, and that is their vote cast your vote and calm down a little bit. >> we are a peaceful people, though, right? >> speaking of, that jonathan, it seems donald trump has been on the defensive his final days. look back at to 16-inat 2016. you look at the college educated how does that look now, especially with covid in the mix? >> it's been as you said before an election unlike any other we've seen trump do more traditional-type campaign rallies in recent weeks. he was not able to do that much of the summer. he had one in tulsa, oklahoma. people who attended the rally
4:08 am
later had covid. we have seen the super spreadspr events where people have come out with covid we've seen joe biden has not held big rallies it's a test to see if people get out without the traditional methods of voter turnout we've seen a tremendous number of people vote already burke the election dama clean, whether they'll get people to the polls remains to be seen. >> the next 24 hours will be crucial and remains to be seen and we're worried about civil unrest we're seeing reports of businesses being boarded up. what should our viewers be prepared for as we head into tonight? >> prepare for everything. it's not clear what's going to happen with this election, how voters are going to react to
4:09 am
either or one or the other candidate winning. i would like to say, believe that the probability is that we will have a peaceful election and that we'll have a peaceful maintenance of pow fir the president wins or transfer of power if joe biden wins, but obviously there are reasons that people are worried about that. >> we'll see what scenarios play out here, john thank you for helping us out on this day. >> the first polls close at 7:00 p.m. in states like georgia and kentucky in new hampshire, pennsylvania, michigan, and some counties in texas, some close at 8:00 p.m. in minnesota they're open until 9:00 eastern and they're open an hour later in iowa and nevada. let's turn to nicaragua where they're preparing for
