we are back with nbc news, decision 2020, 4:30 a.m., we are still with you because this presidential race is yet to be decided. you can see why we have a long way to go. on the road to 270, right now, vice president biden with 220,
1:31 am
president tlump with 213. that doesn't tell the whole story, you see all the gray areas on the map? that is what we are waiting for enough results to call or project who will win those votes. pennsylvania, a critical state, could be the deciding state. it is too early to call. georgia, too close to call. the president with the lead. too close to call. many urban areas haven't been counted yet. north carolina, too close to call at this hour. same situation. waiting for votes to come in in the suburbs. in michigan, too early to call. with the president with a slight lead, 76% of the vote n too early. arizona, at this hour, 82% in, too early to call. and wisconsin, another one of those critical northern states,
1:32 am
what were concerned the blue wall. too close to call at this hour. nevad anot enough information yet. and maine, too early to call. we can note that vice president biden does seem to have a lead in the state of maine. in hawaii, the race there, too early to call. and finally, in alaska, too early to call. with some votes coming in. 36% in so far. here is a look at the map at this hour. again, all of those great states we are waiting for. it may be hours, it may be days, before we count the millions of votes across the country. vice president joe biden did speak. if you weren't awake, here is what he had to say. >> we feel good about where we are. we really do. i am here to tell you tonight,
1:33 am
we believe we are on track to win this election. we knew, because of the unprecedented mail-in, early vote, it would take a while. we will have to be patient. until the hard work of tallying votes is finished. it ain't over until every vote is counted. every ballot is counted. >> ali is in wilmington, delaware, when you hear what the vice president said, it is still too soon. not claiming victory in that speech. what is the campaign saying about what they will do as we head into wednesday morning? >> he is going by the plan that his advisory says laid out to us for days here. they anticipated that donald trump could come out and try to declare an early victory, and
1:34 am
joe biden would not be doing that if they felt optimistic, they would say they are optimistic that is what he said hours ago. we have a new statement from the biden campaign manager. we knew his campaign was watching donald trump at the white house. calling the president's unfounded declaration of victory, identityerageous, unfounded and incorrect. a naked effort to take away the democratic rights of american citizens, promising every vote will be counted. giving a warning, if president trump wants to take this to court, the democrats will have lawyers at the ready and will win those challenges. in my private conversations, this is what the campaign expected.
1:35 am
they weren't sure it would happen, we all saw what happened in the east room. they feel confident about the path before them, wisconsin, michigan, and pennsylvania, the great states, critical. it is democrats trying to re-build the blue wall that donald trump managed to topple. they do think they could see better results, part of the reason the states are gray at this point, a lot of the democratic volts have a lot of ballots coming in in ways they haven't had to deal with before. huge turn-out numbers well before election day. a lot of the localities are dealing with numbers and counting in ways they haven't before. it is a long slog ahead of us. we knew it would take a while to have the votes counted. now we are living that reality.
1:36 am
>> and what about arizona, north carolina, georgia, what is the biden campaign thinking about those? >> those are states that they feel confident about winning. they liked their chances in places like arizona, their campaign manager has been bullish on flipping arizona. this is a campaign that laid out, they have multiple paths to victory, they don't need to go through it southern states, they think the blue wall is the better path. they could pick and pair that with arizona there. are a lot of ways to get to this. that was part of their strategy before election day, there are multiple different ways there a can do that contrasting that with president trump's more narrow path they thought, to victory.
1:37 am
>> 4:36 eastern time in hawaii. joe biden is the winner of hawaii's four electoral votes. that isn't a big surprise. the east room of the white house. play sound. here is the president, just about 2:00. >> we are getting ready for a big celebration. we were winning everything. all of a sudden, it was just called off. the results tonight have been phenomenal. we are getting ready, literally, we were just all set to get outside and just celebrate something that was so beautiful, so good. such a vote. such a success. the citizens of this country have come out in record numbers. this is a record. never been anything like it, to support our incredible movement. >> the president went on to claim victory and wins in
1:38 am
several states which have not been projected by nbc news, there is not enough information yet in those races. millions have voted. those votes not yet counted. we will get to the white house correspondent later. where can a healthier heart lead you? for people with heart failure taking entresto, it may lead to a world of possibilities. entresto helped people stay alive and out of the hospital. don't take entresto if pregnant; it can cause harm or death to an unborn baby. don't take entresto with an ace inhibitor or aliskiren, or if you've had angioedema with an ace or arb. the most serious side effects are angioedema, low blood pressure, kidney problems, or high blood potassium. ask your doctor about entresto. my gums are irritated. or high blood potassium. i don't have to worry about that, do i?

up on the east coast. we have been watching the markets all night. i want to bring in correspondent stephanie rule. in the last 10 minutes a turn-around, they are up again. >> who doesn't like, i wia roll costar. we after the president's remarks, we saw a serious dive. trust the process. it was weeks ago, the president said he would not adhere to a peaceful transfer of power. you saw the markets get skittish, and again, when he opened the door for a contested election. in the last half hou, since you heard from lawmakers across the bhrd, the general rebuking the president, reminding him, he

claimed he has a cleeth path. what is the path they are looking at as most likely? >> it is narrow. that is the most important thing here. what is left, what remains, that needs to be counted. the president's campaign was feeling optimistic about some of the sun belt states, florida, north carolina, has not been called yet. incredibly close. they thought they would do better in arizona. former vice president bideep doing well there. there is the question about the three critical state, michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania, that delivered president trump, the presidency in 2016. we don't have a complete picture yet. hoping to get a clearer picture of wisconsin, they are too close to call.
1:47 am
they have to do quite well in two of three of those in order to really maintain this path. they were looking at in combination of the other things, assuming that they hold on to georgia. not definitive at this point. a lot remains outstanding there. the president facing an uphill battle. that is why his comments earlier tonight were inflammatory and controversy, aides and allies, speaking out afterwards, staying they were distressed by what the president was saying, while he is trying to claim victory, that is not the case yet. the fact is, the trump campaign was playing a lot of defense in the final weeks, we knew that in terms of where the president was spending his time. in states he won in 2016, not trying to expand the map in any way, shape or form. about a year ago, i remember

having conversations about states they could sflip. new mexico, oregon, that is not what the strategy ended up being, instead, looking to the states he won narrowly last cycle to see if they could hang on to them again. in terms of turn-out, they are hoping that that is visible, from the ballots cast, outstanding in terms of totals, it will be a legal battle. that is what republicans are preparing for. in the state of pen pep, where a lot of this could come down to. >> pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin. critical in the hours to come. critical in the hours to come. much more to come, when our ♪

>> good morning. >> good morning. >> so many votes that still have yet to be counted. i think a lot of americans are unsettled by the president's comments this evening. we have to make sure, for the integrity of our elections and democracy, that all of the absentee ballots are counted. for the state that is didn't start to count them, they were not counting ballots cast during early voting. just because the president doesn't like a particular percentage, it doesn't mean we stop counting the votes. vice president pence tried to walk it back. free and fair election system one of the few principles that separate us from nondemocraticinations, everybody is watching us right now. >> talking to black voters in particular, some were saying, it
1:56 am
is late for joe biden to come with an ad spatz, in the last minute, coming to cleveland two days ago now. what is your sense for that? did the biden campaign miss opportunities, not doing enough out-reach sooner? >> i don't know if that is the case. you know. obviously, solid block, 90%, many african american voters want to be courted, talking about economic issues, i think th that, in the final days of the campaign, that had grass roots organizing, showing the democratic math, the fact that he went to ohio, red as of late.

making the case to african american voters, they are the back bone of the democratic party. making sure they don't feel abused or taken advantage of. unlike the president, using the black voters as props, some of the social justice issues, it is not there. if we look at the president's historical, in some ways, it is a cut and dry cause. joe biden did a good job. >> we will see how it playings out in philadelphia, pittsburgh and cities across wisconsin and michigan as well. detroit, very important christina grooer thank you for
