turner for clemson, their free safety, a huge part of the team. >> referee: time-out, injured player. >> tony: and this is a great job by ian book, again, just to get through here, get through the traffic and find your way out of bounds. keep him in bounds, just a nice job of him making it to the sideline. >> mike: there's all of the things in play in the next 1:26. on top of that you also have the college football playoff implications because of notre dame being in the acc this year. you have acc standings implications. the winner of this game is in control of its path. if you keep winning you get to the acc title game. a good chance these two teams compete for the acc. so one and two go, might be
8:01 pm
watching with great interest. there is the other team in the conference. book, looking deep. covered. in the middle for mayer! incomplete. kendrick almost had a game-sealing interception. >> tony: that was close. derion kendrick came off, came out of his zone and had a play on the ball here. >> mike: got a hand on it to. he has more than that. 35, 40. out of bounds as well. that would end everything with a cherry on top of the sundae.
8:02 pm
>> tony: the playing pass so you have the hole, but now you have to make tough plays in the passing game. >> mike: 1:14. two time-outs left. irish down seven. clemson shows pressure. here they come with five. it is picked up and book is going to take that shot. davis, 20. davis, 10! first and goal for the irish at the five! >> tony: they've been waiting all game for it, the slot, man on the safety. get the blitz pickup. kyren williams again, fantastic pickup. double move. >> mike: the clock has restarted. irish looking over to the sideline for the play call. 48 seconds remaining. notre dame, two time-outs. they've got it at the four. with a game-tying score and extra point.
8:03 pm
book. going to throw. rolling out. and it will go to the corner for skowronek and over throw him. second down. 30 seconds remaining. would you think about running down here, tony? >> tony: i would. i would. >> tony: he knows with the end zone. >> mike: second and goal.
8:04 pm
throws. down! >> mik >> tony: baylon spector got his hand up there. >> mike: mckinley, the tight end to the left. skowronek to the right. williams, back next to book. >> book on the roll. end zone. it is caught. jeff. >> mike: dabo swinney's team is going to run a field goal before, came close to a block. jonathan doerer out of the snap
8:05 pm
of michael vincent. the hold of bramblett, to tie it at 33-33. we're waiting for replay to confirm the touchdown. >> referee: the ruling on the touchdown is under further review. >> mike: and replay will ice the kicker. >> tony: davis comes down, just looking for the hole. >> mike: quite clear. it is a yard clear of the plain of the end zone. >> tony: ian book really made that play. trent simpson, the linebacker, is there. he kind of has davis covered up. but with books sliding out of the pocket, that bought the time and allowed the touchdown catch. at least we believe it is a touchdown catch. >> referee: after further review, the ruling on the field is confirmed.
8:06 pm
>> mike: we see you there, young man. you're not alone. a lot of fans on both sides catching their breath here. jonathan doerer's heart beating fast. the kicker for the extra point to tie the game at 33-33. and he gets it through. and we are all tied at 33-33 with 22 on the clock in notre dame stadium. ian book and the irish even it up against number one clemson. >> tony: slides to the right here. >> tony: three man rush.
8:07 pm
the quarterback making the play. >> mike: the drive is ian book. a spectacular hold. wow, no. >> tony: first down. >> mike: directional kickoffs, right. as coach you talk about it all the time and -- special teams -- for notre dame -- kick one out of bounds earlier. travis etienne --
8:08 pm
>> tony: even if it is pick off, you are going to overtime anyway. they're not going to do that. they're going to play for overtime. >> mike: i always wondered in these situations, the play open -- the safety back there who can tackle instead of a running back. >> tony: right. >> mike: there's one guy back at the 14 yard line but uiagalelei will take a lead.
8:09 pm
8:10 pm
>> mike: back at notre dame stadium. mike tyreirico, tony dungy, katn tappen. >> referee: we have overtime. one time out. we use the same call. your call, you get the choice of offense or defense when we get to that call. it is your call first. heads or tails? you called tails. tails have been called. it is a heads. you won the toss. >> defense. >> referee: notre dame will go on defense. which way you want to go? clemson that way. >> mike: i had visions of thanksgiving in detroit and jerome bettis there with the coin toss. that's why two officials are there for the coin toss, to make
8:11 pm
sure it is heard properly and communicated and clearly understood because i believe it is still what happened in detroit on thanksgiving many years ago. the game recap, the irish built a lead. second play of the game, kyren williams, 65 yards, up 10-0. uiagalelei had a big shot down field. powell, who had an excellent game, made it 10-7. then this key turning point. etienne couldn't hang on. scored. irish up 20-10, a lead expended to 23-10. third quarter dominated by clemson. etienne touchdown with 3:33 left to put clemson ahead, but ian book on a terrific drive down the field by avery davis for the game-tying touchdown. 33-33. i don't know who is going to win, but i know i sign up with all of the couch football fans to see the game again in the acc championship game. who will be the one in the regular season? uiagalelei will throw it over the top. powell breaks to the end zone! and he's in for the touchdown.
8:12 pm
>> tony: that didn't take long. >> mike: whoa! just like that, powell on a rocket shot from uiagalelei. 39-33, clemson. >> tony: play action fake and then a rocket to cornell powell. on the slant and that ball is in there before the defenders can react. >> mike: we're going to have to review where the ball was when his bottom hit the goal line. we see right there. looks like when he came down the ball as at the play. probably have to freeze to confirm it. and here is that freeze.
8:13 pm
>> tony: very close. very close. >> reporter: i think he'll get that. >> tony: as close as owusu-koramoah. >> mike: that's right. at the other end that put the irish up ten. that spot where he's down, i don't know how you could reverse that. the second touchdown, if it is a touchdown for powell, six catches, 162 yards. uiagalelei has thrown for 426 now. >> tony: has he really? that's a sneaky 400. >> mike: you're the best. >> tony: no, it is. >> mike: i know. >> tony: he's having a good night and, yeah, i would say maybe 350. >> mike: and his dad, a big day. he's been loving every second of this. he has not sat down since he walked in the stadium.
8:14 pm
>> tony: you know what? he is a proud dad, but i love it. that's how i would be with my boys if they're doing great like this. >> mike: so proud of his -- >> referee: after further review, the ruling on the field stands. >> tony: and that's the right call. it was too tight to reverse what they called on the field. >> mike: all of the good receivers on this team, mentioned probably their best as well. cornell powell in his senior year, but a sense of desperation in camp has picked up that sense of desperation. >> tony: tony ellis told us dabo swinney had a talk with him last week. maybe he should have talked to him a few games ago. >> mike: we mentioned behind so many big players including justyn ross, a terrific player we haven't seen because of the spinal injury they were looking at with him during the past summer. the referee is coming back to talk to the replay booth one
8:15 pm
more time here after they said the call is confirmed. so after that, big dave was watching. big dave loving every second up there. look at this. >> let's go! let's go! >>tony: what a great guy. what a character. >> mike: body guard for star musicians. he's so proud of his son, francis he puts out all of the stuff his son does on social media. his son blocked him, blocked his own dad. said, you can't do this, you're embarrassing him. kids all around the country are friends with big dave because he's blocked on social media. >> tony: when he was going on his recruiting visit he went to alabama and he went to clemson. when he talked to dabo swinney and dabo talked about his faith
8:16 pm
in god and being a good father, and he wanted d.j. to be a good father and husband, and it was about more than football. >> referee: after further review the runner's leg was down before the ball broke at the goal line. the ball will be placed at the one yard line. >> mike: it is interesting. >> tony: i don't understand that. >> mike: they said, let's look at it a second time. terry mccauley, i'll bring you in. >> terry: they're saying the lower right leg touches there before the ball is in. from that shot it looks like they're correct. i don't know why they didn't get it in the first place, why they didn't see that. but it does look like that shin, that calf is down and the ball is short. >> mike: well, terry, they may have been looking at what all of us were looking at, the bottom came down where the ball was and went back to look at the shin coming down. >> tony: yeah. >> mike: so explains why.
8:17 pm
then after it is all confirmed, they come back and unconfirmed. thank you. replay has it under their control, so it is a half yard away. we saw the bc game. nothing guaranteed about how they get in. uiagalelei is going to take it in his own hands, reach for the goal line, and he's in. for the touchdown. >> tony: dabo is saying, is that final a touchdown. >> mike: you understand the emotion, the tension of the moment. language may not bother some. for those who it does, apology.
8:18 pm
but you understand in the middle of competition that happens. it gets caught on the live microphone. 39-33. guess what -- >> referee: the ruling on the field was a touchdown. that play is under further review. >> mike: dabo, as many of us -- but you know what? look, here is the system. you can't get most of them right. you have to get all of them right when you have access to it. so they require multiple looks because you never know what can happen on the next snap. they just want to make sure on this one. we have cameras everywhere and there are just so many bodies in here, trying to pick
8:19 pm
out uiagalelei. i think i see his legs, arms and shins. most of him not on the ground when the ball crosses the plane as you look down the pylon camera. as a coach do you worry what it does momentum wise on either side or does it not matter? >> tony: not really. >> mike: okay. >> tony: you have to fight through this and get ready to play when they blow the whistle. >> mike: you are one of the most patient men on earth. i will say, tony, coming in here i think we both thought that there was a matchup of two pretty good teams from what you had seen on film but there was a big question because they hadn't played anybody who was any good. obviously clemson was terrific and here is the ball. >> referee: after further review the ruling on the field is confirmed. >> mike: i was curious, as you have watched them against an elite team, what do you think about the teams, no matter how it ends up tonight?
8:20 pm
>> tony: i thought the game would be like this. you and i talked about it this whole week leading up to it. notre dame has a tremendous group of young men. they've got a great team, and i would like to see these teams play three, four, five times. it is going to be 3-2, something like that. these are evenly matched team. >> mike: even without trevor lawrence, the quarterback. potter for the extra point. he knocks it through, so the irish will need a touchdown and an extra point to move to a second overtime. it took a while but it was a quick strike from clemson. it was the one path, the sneak from uiagalelei. what has he done in his first two college starts? 58 for 83. 767. six sixers on the board.
8:21 pm
no picks. >> tony: what that doesn't show, mike, is the fact that the first game they're down 18. in this game you are at notre dame, down 13, and it doesn't faze him. he's playing his game and staying cool and calm. really impressive for a freshman. >> mike: so ian book of the irish offense take the field for a second consecutive possession, knowing they have to score a touchdown. this one to get it to a second overtime. on the first play, a run inside with kyren williams for a couple of yards. has been better contained in the second half. >> tony: notre dame knows they have four downs. that's the advantage of going on defense first. this is four downs territory. you won't have that big decision if you get to fourth and one or fourth and two. you know you are going for it. >> mike: last irish o.t. game was early in the season in austin, the double overtime in the loss to the longhorns.
8:22 pm
book retreats. nobody open down field. takes off and fires. sidelined. mayer comes back and catches it at the eight yard line. this terrific freshman. injury for clemson. knee is hurt. knee down, in bounds. >> tony: definitely there. ian book time and time again in this game, buying time, staying alive. nothing open right away. just moving around in the pocket. >> mike: you see bresee. he was on the run chasing book and then went down and was in a ton of discomfort when he initially went down. good to see him getting back up here. we see a couple of clemson
8:23 pm
players cramp over the last few minutes. boy, the freshman tight end is making such a big impact, you know, with all apologies to pete buttigieg, there's another freshman mayer from south bend that the nation is getting to know. >> tony: i wondered where you were going with that. i will buy that. >> mike: the nation is getting to know this mayer from south bend because michael mayer, player of the year in the state of kentucky. number four in the country in terms of recruiting. we're seeing him over the last few games. >> tony: seeing him get better and better. he does athletic things that you can't believe for a man his size. >> mike: first and goal for the irish at the eighth. tremble, the other tight end, in motion. tight ends go to the right. book, reloads. fires. mckinley at the three.
8:24 pm
gain of five. second and goal. mckinley, the senior, raced thornton who had to come in as safety after zanders was hurt earlier. again, another player that has not played at much ths much thi. so often no huddle. they've been huddling throughout. into the back field. now book will come under center, get into a power formation. hand to williams. the tight end is on that side. to the goal line and in! kyren williams for a notre dame touchdown. and an extra point from a tie game. again.
8:25 pm
tommy tremble. >> tony: this is michael mayer and tommy tremble on the left side, just crushing the line of scrimmage. blowing that hole open. that is just dominant blocking at the point of attack. kyren williams takes it in. >> mike: as they wait for confirmation from the replay booth. jonathan doerer just went through this a couple of minutes before waiting. this series of overtime has gone down here. we will take a deeper look at this. it has come down the south end -- >> referee: the ruling of the touchdown is under further review. >> mike: the students are kind of spread out all over the stadium. the band is down at the opposite end of the stadium, the north end. that's probably where the second overtime will take place. again, no body part down at this point. william stretching, ball in his
8:26 pm
right arm. the arm farthest from the plane as he is twisted. his first body part down is there. >> tony: and the question is where is the ball. has it broken the plane. hard to tell. >> mike: so you establish when he was down, and then you look at this angle which looks down the plane. it seems to all connect for a score. you do like to get 'em right in the big spots, but the momentum and the energy of the game just comes to a complete -- >> referee: after further review, the ruling on the field stands. >> mike: so jonathan doerer will come back and try to tie the game. kyren williams, his second
8:27 pm
touchdown. 142 yards on this night. so out of the hold of bramblett, here is doerer to send it to a second overtime. and he knocks it through. maybe 2020 hasn't been great, but 2020 has given us 40-40. it is pretty good as we head to overtime number two. hey, uh, jake from state farm, i maayyy have told our server you can give her the "rodgers rate" on her insurance. well, that's just fine considering the "rodgers rate" isn't real. yeah but i'm sure you gotta probably pull some strings or something, ya know. look, there's no strings. here's the deal, state farm offers everyone surprisingly great rates. hey, we're in. we got the rodgers rate. did you guys want some? when you want the real deal, like a good neighbor, state farm is there.
8:28 pm
>> mike: game of the year in college football to this date. the matchup was terrific with clemson, two national championships in the last four years, number one. looking to extend its regular season win streak. and the fighting irish of notre dame, so often this setting for generations the biggest games of the year in college football. not as much lately. it has been a while since number one has come in here, 15 years since the famed game with reggie bush. of course, the game of the century won against 27 years ago with florida state being knocked off by notre dame. the next week notre dame lost to boston college and the irish would play bc coming up a week from day, chestnut hill. bc survived in syracuse today by
8:29 pm
a field goal. irish will get the ball first here in the second overtime. >> tony: what you are seeing here is two teams with championship heart and they're showing it. momentum swings and change of momentum and teams fighting back from deficits, this has been outstanding football. >> mike: 40-40. the irish go first. and ian book, right back to kyren williams. cramped up earlier. looks like he may be bothered again as he got over to make that tackle, reaching towards his knee this time. i'm not sure what the uber talented freshman is dealing with at the moment. matter of fact, two clemson players are injured here, bresee is one of them. >> tony: he is right over the center. he is going -- he actually gets hit by his own man. >> mike: yeah, cracking down from the corner, sheridan jones. bresee came back after getting that gatorade bottle in his hand quickly earlier, but
