we'll talk about what's ahead in the forecast. that's coming up in a few minute. mike, how is it looking getting throughout the commute around the bay area? >> kari, i'm worried about folks heading across the bay bridge into san francisco as it's right there on the map. the bay bridge toll plaza west 80. slowed things down for the metering lights. it's already starting to recover getting into san francisco. i think that crash has cleared but the metering lights will be on for the rest of the morning commute. slowing has cleared but smaller crashes. we'll check on each of those. over to you. >> just north of there, mike, some breaking news this morning. a live look at san leandro where firefighters are in the midst of battling a fire at the georgia pacific paper plant. you see there still smoking. firefighters still on the scene. firefighters tell us that new

cardboard boxes are on fire. no structures are burning. firefighters should be out there all day and drivers may be able to see the smoke or even the glow from the fire during the morning commute. our bob redell is there and will have a live report at the bottom of the hours. and happening today the hard work begins for joe biden and kamala harris as they launch the presidential transition team. nbc projected biden's win in pennsylvania early saturday. the count now has biden with more than nine electoral votes, that's more than the 270 that he needs. his margin of victory could further widen as the final votes are counted. biden continues to hold the lead over president trump in georgia and arizona. >> joe biden and vice president-elected kamala harris starting with the highest

virus and the economy, working on a plan to begin january 20th. >> that plan will be built on bedrock science, constructed out of compassion, empathy and concern. >> reporter: the trump campaign is promising a new round of lawsuits today challenging election results. in nevada they claim dead people voted and machines could not verify signatures. >> the voter rolls had a lot of improper voters and we pointed out that the signature verification process were simply not going to protect the system. >> reporter: president trump tweeting since when does the lame stream media determine who our next president will be. >> candidates have the ability to reflect a recount after the election. we are preparing for that. >> reporter: some republicans are warning the president to tone down his language. >> when you say that the election was corrupt or stolen

campuses, google and apple designed the app. ten days is all it took for the u.s. to move from 9 million to 10 million cases. the u.s. passed the new threshold overnight. 240,000 americans have died. the number of deaths approaching 18,000 in california. new this morning, big news in the race for a vaccine. drug maker pfizer says its vaccine is more than 90% effective and plans to ask the food and drug administration for emergency authorization of the two dose vaccine later this month saying it's seen no serious safety and health concerns and plans to have enough vaccine to immunize 15 million to 20 million poem. 11 vaccines in the late stage trials including four in the united states. 6:08 right now. bundle up. as kari has been talking about this wintry blast. it was expected but, still,

certainly wakes you up this morning. this is going to make it hard for a lot of businesses. they're trying to get going again after all the covid shutdowns. who wants to eat outside when it's so cold. >> kris sanchez has a look at how restaurants are handling it. it is very tough. you want to support them but it's chilly out there. >> reporter: it is. we should rename it al fresco to al frigid. i had to dig out my gloves and make sure i was wearing a warmer coat this morning. a lot of businesses are doing what they can to adjust to the changing weather as well. they are working to do things like add heaters and having to track those down. a shortage of and reinforcing outdoor dining tents against the wind so they don't lose them when the wind gusts pick up.

diners will have to decide whether it's better to expose themselves to the elements outside or potentially expose themselves to more covid risk by dining inside. >> i definitely won't be standing or eating outside for sure. >> our choice is to go in because of the weather. >> reporter: salons and gyms are dealing with the same challenges as restaurants. limited indoor capacity and also they're trying to show their clients that they can meet their needs in the outdoor setting even as the weather starts to turn. the head of the white house coronavirus task force, dr. anthony fauci, is warning that cold weather could bring spikes of coronavirus cases nationwide as people start to gather indoors. we've certainly already seen that in the colder climates like on the east coast. last week and here in santa clara county, 358 new infections were added. and six more people died of covid.

there's a comma in it. you will not see that very often. now all of this news, the reason behind this is pfizer this morning says its trial vaccine prevents infection in more than 90% of the patients studied. it is not clear how long it will last. fizzer says they could give the first two doses by next month. even president trump was tweeting about it saying such great news. now to his credit it must be frustrating that the news came out almost exactly a week too late for his campaign. he the vaccine was not part of the government's warp speed effort. pfizer chose not to take federal money and participate in that program. now the pandemic, of course, hit airlines very hard.

norwegian air says its future is uncertain. it's flying 21 airplanes now having grounded more than 100. it used to fly out of the bay area with really low fares but now concentrates on europe. tracking all the things joe biden will need to do this monday morning until he's sworn in as the next president. he's talking about getting a coronavirus stimulus passed. in some ways it may be easier that he seems to have stopped getting involved in that effort. republicans and democrats still seem far apart on that issue. and virgin hyper loop has successfully tested its hyper loop technology with human passengers and employees. it went about a third of a mile in a few seconds because that's how long the tube they were traveling in was built. this thing reminds me, i don't know, i've been a californian for 25 years, something like

holiday spending habits at all. just 9% plan to slightly increase some of their spending. if you're looking for a gift over the holidays look no further than oprah's favorite things list which the magazine just released. two bay area businesses made that list. the first one is motherland gift collection which is coffee beans from an oakland-based red bay coffee company. the second is a cast iron dutch oven. i bet if you go to the coffee company today. you could get something nice and warm. laura has that idea. >> i'm working on my second cup of coffee. >> me, too. >> trying to stay warm. even inside the house it is very cold. let's take a look at our live view in san francisco as the sun rises and it's such a beautiful start to our morning. all the colorful hues in the sky. temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

this is where we're headed today. it's going to be pretty cool. jacket weather even into the afternoon. it will feel nice and sunshine that we're going to see throughout the day and some lighter winds. as we go to the end of the week i'll be tracking more rain. really excited to see these storm systems move in because e bewe are in an extreme doubt. the first round but then another one moving in between friday night and saturday. and this one looks to bring in some pretty decent amounts of rainfall and as it moves through from north to south some of the highest rain chances and rain totals will be in the north bay. so i just wanted to give you early estimates of what the computer models are showing and this may change as the week goes along and we get closer to the event but as of right now it's showing the possibility throughout the weekend of over an inch of rain for the north bay. you head south and we can see close to half an inch of rain,

so that looks good there. we are also looking forward to some more sierra snow. we went straight from summer to winter here in the sierra because now we're looking at some snowfall totals that may reach over a foot of snow. just in case you're wondering what to expect over the next couple of weeks we could see some above normal rainfall and some below normal temperatures for the bay area going into the next two weeks so not seeing a pretty big warm-up here. we're going to stay nice and cool with highs mostly in the 60s. we can see that as we go into the next seven days and some off and on rain chances. right now, mike, getting out the door it's all about cranking up the heaters. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights are on. over on the san francisco side, the map shows you slowing from treasure island down into the fremont exit as well. an earlier crash has activity there.

their very important items. it makes me very happy. ♪ ♪ this is "jeopardy." >> who was the greatest game show host? hard to process alex trebek died yesterday. trebek was born in canada, achieving his greatest fame in america becoming a u.s. citizen in 1998. he died at the age of 80. surrounded by family and friends 20 months since he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. the news of his death brought people together at his star on the hollywood walk of fame. visitors took photos and placed flowers there.

producers say episodes taped will continue to air through christmas day. he spent his last day in the studio just on october 29th, ten days before his death. >> he will be missed. happening now for you tropical storm eta still gaining strength. this is after making landfall in the florida keys overnight. a look at where that storm is right now. a live look in miami for you. forecasters warn eta could bring a lot more rain and strong strength because it could become a hurricane. overnight parts of the state bringing some strong winds and heavy rains, even triggering rescues along some of those roadways. coming up next, waiting to see how wall street will react to pfizer's new vaccine. dow futures have skyrocketed nearly 6%. a look at the opening bell next. fire breaks out at an east bay paper plant. a live report coming up for you on what's causing firefighters the most problems battling those flames.

>> reporter: this is what you might see driving up and down 880 in san leandro. a fire a few hundred yards in the background. you see the alameda county fire department. those are cardboard boxes that were brand-new, that were going to be sent out for shipping behind the georgia pacific paper facility here in san leandro. this is what the fire looked like closer after it started. started around 10:40. you can see very flammable, a lot of flames. the fire department had a call out for a second alarm for reinforcements to help fight this. if you're not familiar this is about southeast of the marina boulevard off of 880 here in san leandro. the fire department doesn't know what caused the fire. georgia pacific tells us what's burning are cardboard box that is were ready to be shipped out

food safety or the u.s. ambassador to bolivia. it's worth noting president trump didn't fill many of those slots throughout his entire presidency. we don't have a u.s. ambassador to bolivia. the smooth transition from one administration to another is not just good for the united states, it's also the law. president trump had to appoint a head of white house transition even ahead of the election, as did president obama, just in case he lost, which in president trump's case, he did. that he's not accepting it makes no difference to the law. a former presidential candidate mitt romney speaking sunday morning on "meet the press." >> in a setting like this we want to preserve something which is far more important than ourselves or even our party and that is preserve the cause of freedom and democracy here and around the world. for the president to do what he has traditionally done and what he's doing now i don't think will be a surprise to anybody. >> the trump campaign not ready

to admit defeat holding this press conference over the weekend in the back of a landscaping business at an industrial park in philadelphia. now how this was chosen as the location remains a mystery but a "washington post" columnist says, quote, literally anywhere else would have conveyed more legitimacy on the enterprise. the president's attorney rudy giuliani was said the race was not over. >> they don't decide the election. the call for joe biden -- who was it called by? oh, my goodness, all of the networks, wow! all of the networks! we have to forget about the law. >> this is very similar to what president trump said in a tweet. since when does the lame stream media call who our next president will be? we have learned a lot over the last two weeks. now if you're using this verb to call in the sense of a judgment or prediction, the mainstream media has been calling elections

for decades. if you using the verb to call as the word like determine or decide, the media does not decide who the president is. the votes do. and you can make your own judgment. the election results are published by each state, publicly available. you can go over the raw numbers in states and decide who won for yourself. if the state is not done counting you can look at the raw count and make your own judgment. kari hall says it's going to be cool but sunny today. the data she uses, barometric pressure, wind speed, are all publicly available data points and you can make your own decision on the forecast as well if you wish. giuliani said the trump administration would file a lawsuit in pennsylvania today. we have not seen it yet. the campaign also held a press conference in nevada promising a lawsuit not filed there. we've seen several suits fail to go forward in court as judges ruled the evidence was not compelling enough or didn't exist. this was a hearing in michigan last week aired on zoom because of the coronavirus.

throughout the election president-elect joe biden emphasized covid-19 is one of the biggest challenges the administration had to face. so he said he would face it with science and expertise and that comes in from ucsf bay area hospital, some physicians there. take a look at who these physicians are. three locals have been named to the biden/harris transition team advisory board that will advise the president elect and vice president elect. dr. david kessler was named co-chair on the task force and professor of pediatrics and biostatistics, dr. kessler served as fda commissioner from 1990 to 1997. he was appointed by president h.w. bush and reappointed by president bill clinton. dr. robert rodriguez served as a professor of emergency medicine at ucsf school of medicine where he works on the frontline in the

emergency department and icu of two major trauma centers. and an expert on infectious disease at the school of medicine during clinton administration was the founding director of the ryan white care act, the largest federally funded hiv/aids act. he was in the obama administration. and as new cases continue to rise across the nation, local epidemiology experts say the next administration's task force is crucial in not only coordinating the nation's latest medical innovations and vaccines but getting the public to buy into their plan. take a listen to what experts had to say. >> everybody has to get on the same page and if we are hearing different things from different groups, it's just going to confuse everyone and we're not going to on january 21st or the

go into the day. it's only 36 degrees. but then check out our temperatures for today. we're going from the cool temperatures this morning as you make plans for the kids to head outside for a little bit of some outdoor time, maybe later this morning it's going to feel nicer especially in san jose as we head into the mid to upper 50s. the upper 50s in a lot of spots with a few of us making it up to about 60 degrees, up to 60 in palo alto. napa and livermore will reach into the upper 50s in the tri-valley we're looking at some cool air and we're going to have some quiet weather throughout the week with no storm systems up until about thursday and then another round of rain coming in between friday night and saturday. and that one looks like a slightly stronger storm that may bring in some more widespread rain as well as another round of some cool temperatures. we'll be watching out for that that could bring us decent shots of rain. i want to show you what the models are putting down for now. now this may change as we go

through the week but it's looking pretty good here throughout the course of the weekend. some of our models are showing the possibility of getting over an inch of rain so that will be really great to see areas south of the golden gate could see up to half an inch in tote . for the sierra another round of snow with the possibility there of at least a foot of snow in some of the upper elevations. we'll be watching that throughout the week. meantime it's just going to be dry and cool. highs reaching into the lower 60s. morning temperatures still in the low 40s and not much of a warm-up here as we go through the forecast. only coming up a few degrees between now and sunday. mike, getting out the door for work, how is it looking for the commute? pretty good, kari. over the weekend needed those chains to get through the sierra. locally everything looks good as we take a look at the mams. the bottom of the screen northbound 101 had a series of

firefighters have been out all morning. making any headway? >> reporter: they expect to be out here for much of the day. it's hard to tell from our vantage point. it's a good thing, this is behind the georgia pacific paper, not far from the exit of marina boulevard. this is not burning any structures. we're burning pallets of cardboard boxes used for fruits and vegetables. you can see how dangerous from the video provided by the fire department. the material is very flammable and that's why it's taking so long to put this out. at one point they did have a bulldozer out here. the fire department trying to push debris away and to spread it out but, again, because we're dealing with cardboard and it's really going, they do expect to be out here through much of the day so, again, this is smoke you might be able to see if you're driving up and down 880 and 580 in the san leandro area. they don't know the cause. no one has been hurt, no

structures burned. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." all right, thank you very much, bob. 6:56 right now. new this morning big news in the race for a vaccine. drug maker pfizer says its coronavirus vaccine is more than 90% effective. pfizer plans to ask the food and drug administration for emergency authorization of the two dose vaccine later this month saying it's seen no serious safety and health concerns. it also initially plans to have enough vaccine to immunize 15 million to 20 million people. a live look at the big board for you this morning where we could see the dow is up more than 1,100 points right now. investors excited over the report of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine. over 90% effective. let's take a peek outside this morning. the sun is coming up. is it really warming things up across the bay area? it would be nice. it's been near freezing in some spots out there. a really chilly start to our week and that cold weather may

be hitting some businesses especially hard. let's check in with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez. these restaurants need people to come out but they'd better bundle up. >> reporter: they're, they're doing what they can to convince customers to continue buying into the outdoor experience even as the weather starts to turn a little bit colder. restaurants we talked with a adding heaters if they can find them. they are in short supply. they're reinforcing outdoor dining tents against the wind so that they don't fly away when we get the gusty winds like we saw over the weekend. kari did tell us to expect the change. our temperature swings are still pretty remarkable. >> it's definitely a big switch. i was in shorts a few days ago. >> reporter: salons and gyms dealing with the same challenges as restaurants with that limited indoor capacity and trying to make that outdoor experience comfortable but we do have to weigh the benefits of going
