mike keeping an eye on the roads for us this morning but that veterans day forecast for us, meteorologist kari hall is taking a look at that. a nice day to get out if anyone wants to celebrate? we are going to see some milder temperatures to start. our afternoon will be much more of the same. a clear sky. we'll start to see more clouds moving in. and by friday that rain will be moving in. most of it looks like it will be ending by saturday. then as we go through the forecast today once again we're matching yesterday's temperatures only reaching into the upper 50s and lower sick. more about the rain coming up. mike, how does it look? you have to see this, folks at home, take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza where we have no backup right now, a little slowing but no problems getting there. lighter volume indicative of

commemoration of veterans day. we'll see if he speaks either before or after as he heads back. oftentimes he will speak to the press. we have not seen him or heard from him on camera. since those results were released. >> tracie potts in washington, thank you. 6:04. back at home in the bay area reopening schools is getting more complicated as covid cases spike. parents are sounding off in an east bay school district demanding students return to the classrooms. >> they don't have enough instructional time, they're getting depressed. >> now those parents taking their concerns to the district officials. >> and with covid cases increasing, cierra johnson is sorting through the problem bay area schools are up against here. >> reporter: yes, good morning.

when mayor london breed made the announcement about putting pause on reopening some of the big restrictions was halting reopening for high schools that have not already opened. they were shutting down because their students weren't following covid-19 protocols. branson high school had been holding in-person learning for about three weeks until school leaders learned that students were involved in a party that then shut down campus activities. the school is now asking students to get covid tests to determine when the school can reopen. take a listen to one student reacting. >> for me zoom is -- it's a lot harder for me to do everything with school and it's nicer to be with my friends and see my teachers and be in classes.

>> reporter: parents listened to a school board meeting that included a report on the reopening plan. many parents are fed up with distance learning and ready for their students to get back in class. so far school leaders have put together a task force with hopes of getting elementary school students in class first. the time line for reopening has not been revealed and here in the city san francisco schools looking to get their students back in the classroom similar to many other districts they're looking to do it in phases. yesterday the school board did approve a january 25th start date for pk through first grade and students with disabts. the next update will be on december 8th. those cases continue to rise and, of course, all of those plans are contingent on the covid numbers. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay."

the strongest guidance yet on mask wearing. it cites growing evidence a mask can help protect the person wearing it. the cdc says adopting universal mask wearing policies could help prevent future lockdowns. back to veterans day this wednesday and despite the pandemic several bay area events planned. a drive-thru parade that starts at 10:45 in martinez. in the meantime in lieu of gathering in person marin's veterans service office and united veterans council plan to post tributes on their facebook pages. and to celebrate veterans day, veterans and gold star family members can now get free lifetime access to national parks. this is part of a new program introduced by the national park service. what you need is proof of service. it is required to get that access. in an effort to boost ridership

the san francisco ferry is offering a new deal for people who want to take a trip around the bay. $1 ferry rides out of vallejo. due to the pandemic ridership is down more than 90%. the $1 ferry deal will last through the end of the year. all riders are required to wear those masks and follow those covid guidelines. friday marks the return of king tides to the bay area. this is video from a previous king tide event in the north bay, but, as always, flooding is possible in parts of marin county as well as the embarcadero and ocean beach in san francisco. the low lying coastal areas along the peninsula as well and never turn your back to the water. forward facing today, kari hall. a look at continued coverage of these king tides. they can get pretty big. >> yes, they can. it's because of the

ridership is nowhere near what it was pro-pandemic but the company says about twice as high as the lockdowns in the spring. lyft looking to get into the food delivery business. that's really helped uber with its uber eats. lyft's decision comes at a time there's more concern about eating at restaurants particularly indoors. a new study by researchers from stanford university and northwestern university found indoor dining counted for much of the transmission from stranger to stranger. >> a relatively small number of destination places, call them super spreader places, account for very large proportion of the infections. the stock market will open. banks and other institutions are mostly closed. we'll continue to see that pivot out of tech stocks. the dow goes up, nasdaq down. i put apple's stock price up there.

lettuce. it's linked to the brand that is sold at walmart. the contaminated let us from the salin salinas-based company. a dozen people have reported getting sick. another recall involving ring and hundreds of thousands of smart doorbells. this comes after the company received several reports of the devices catching fire. the recall affects about 350,000 second generation ring doorbells sold in the united states. calling all cruisers, royal caribbean says that it needs -- it's in need of volunteers to take simulated mock voyage. so this is what it's doing. the company can test covid-19 protocols before it fully resumes service on the water. royal caribbean is conducting those tests due to new guidance from the cdc when it comes to cruise lines. trending this morning for

same. we're still looking at highs that will only reach into the low 60s today, cooler than normal. we're up to 60 degrees, rechlg 61 and mid-50s along the coastline reaching up to 55 degrees in daly city. and our north bay highs will be in the upper 50s to low 60s. it's nice and quiet. a few more clouds moving in. we'll see some peeks of sunshine but the rain is set to arrive on friday. when it gets here now the models are showing the storm system weakening. rain for far northern california but then just kind of falling apart as it moves through. at least we have more rain chances in the forecast for early next week. it looks like the rain will be one and done as it moves in and we're looking at the possibility of getting a tenth to a quarter

just in this morning trop eta just upgraded to hurricane status. that call made around 4:30 this morning as the storm picked up strength off the southwest coast of florida. heavy flooding making it difficult for drivers there in the area. deputies near miami have put out warning signs along some of the roadways. crashes and flooding in farmland areas. now to a follow-up on britney spears' battle for independence. a judge upheld her father's role in overseeing her finances. the pop star wanted her father removed from the role. but a judge appointed a financial company to help oversee britney's estate.

moving in. we'll see the clouds hanging out all day but not much of a rise in our temperatures today. we're not going to see any rain until friday when the next system comes in and it'll be a quick in and out of here rain as it ends by saturday morning. as we look at our high temperatures for today expect it to reach into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. we'll see more temperatures like this in the forecast even as the rain arrives. we'll talk more about that in a few minimum. what's going on for the commute? across the bay bridge it's 6:31 now and we have no backup at the toll plaza. a very easy drive. we're looking at the map, no problem getting to the toll plaza on our speed sensors, getting away from the bay bridge slowing for eastbound 580. a crash at 35th had all lanes blocked for a couple of minutes. now we have two of the four

lanes blocked away from the bridge because of the crash there. the rest of the bay looks good. back to you, laura. >> we begin with the biden team versus facebook. the social media site under fire for not stopping the spread of misinformation following the election. >> bob redell, i know facebook isn't taking this criticism lightly. >> reporter: president-elect biden supports the communications decency act which protects social media platforms like facebook from being sued over the content posted by its users. what happened earlier over the last several days doesn't help facebook's case to keep section 230 intact when president-elect biden takes office.

facebook allowed for those who think the election was stolen. there's no evidence such a thing has happened. facebook has taken down the groups after they were pressured to do so. biden's deputy press secretary bill russo tweeted yesterday if you thought disinformation on facebook was a problem during our election just wait until you see how it is shredding the fabric of our democracy in the days after. we knew this would happen. we've pleaded for a year to be serious. they have not. our democracy is on the line. we need answers. it's not clear if president-elect biden would have the votes to make that happen. as the "san francisco chronicle" reports facebook has said it has enacted measures to reduce the spread of misinformation, has put in place the largest third-party fact checking and

made sure fewer see false information and are alerted to it when they do. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> interesting, thanks, bob. the city of oakland has finally closed its legal chapter resulting from the deadly ghostship warehouse fire. yesterday they signed off with 12 former tenants without admitting fault providing $400,000 to tenants who lost property and suffered emotional distress. the city previously settled with the families of 32 of 36 people who died in the fire and one person severely injured. a new coast guard directive reportedly tells inspectors to look closer at the storage and the use of lithium ion batteries and chargers onboard those small vessels according to the "l.a. times" which adds that the new directive comes in the wake of ntsb releasing finds on last year's deadly dive boat fire in southern california. investigators never pinpointed

since election day and proposition 15 now appears to be headed for defeat. the state's biggest real estate tax proposal in more than four decades is about 48% supported. the proposition would have re-assessed taxes on commercial properties. as of yesterday there's still about 1.5 million mail-in provisional ballots left to count and it would need about two-thirds yes votes to close the current gap. president trump today making his first public appearance since the election. >> and, scott mcgrew, they will be recognizing veterans today. >> president trump will be at arlington national cemetery today. president-elect biden will hold a separate event. we saw him yesterday as he reacted to what appears to be a win in the supreme court over the affordable care act. conservative judges indicating they did not agree obamacare had

to be struck down because of the removal of the individual mandate. and the shake-up at the pentagon. the secretary of defense is out, mark esper. he had differed with the president on many things. the true end came after esper voiced regret he had taken part in trump's walk across lafayette park for a photo op with a bible. esper not the only one out, though. the president installed former general anthony tata as acting undersecretary for defense policy. his earlier nomination for the very same job was scuttled by the senate after past statements about president obama were uncovered. he had called president obama a terrorist. he says he regrets the statement and no longer agreed with it. and president trump has replaced the secretary of defense for intelligence, a former navy admiral, with a former aide to michael flynn. other news the republican governor of massachusetts is the latest to say to president trump

it is time to concede. >> i believe if many of the things that the republican party i support stands for, which is why i've been one for 40 years. one of the things i don't believe people should stand for if you're any place in elective office is thisel elic elections are only legit if you win. >> alaska called for president trump. it is not enough to change the outcome. some states are still not done counting, but the data folks at nbc point out in 2016 donald trump won michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin by a combined 77,000 votes and hillary clinton conceded. joe biden won the same three states by a combined 214,000 votes and counting and no concession yet from president trump. we will talk about his public

county surged by 100%. san francisco, contra costa and santa cruz counties are restricting indoor dining and workouts once again and bay area wide health leaders are urging people to wear their mass bes. the cdc said increasing by 15% could prevent the need for lockdowns and cut economic losses of up to $1 trillion. bay area wide cases, the positivity rates, hospitalizations are all up. the only bright spot deaths are decreasing. people are getting sick but are surviving. governor newsom said yesterday some of the people sick now likely got sick at small gatherings two weeks ago. contact tracing indicates restaurants and houses of worship are sources of spread. the bay area had been a model

for stemming the spread. now we have let our guard down as the governor says. let's talk about the holidays. they're almost here. i have my nephew coming in, my future stepdaughters coming in from college. there are concerns with all this family traveling. >> reporter: this is concerning particularly because here in the bay area the biggest spikes are among people 18 to 34 years old so young adults. i reached out to the umbrella policy regarding travel. i do know uc berkeley is asking their students who are on campus to stay on campus, to stay in berkeley or to quarantine for two weeks, and if they choose to go home and travel, they're asking them to just stay home for the rest of the semester. a lot of colleges and universities have testing requirements, but it's just kind of a piecemeal policy at this point.

maybe a few peeks of sunshine. we are getting ready for some changes after seeing temperatures reach 62 in los gatos. postally upper 50s and more clouds today in parts of the east bay, concord reaching 60 degrees. we'll see mid-50s along the coastline and parts of the peninsula. san francisco reaching into the upper 50s today. our north bay highs will reach into the upper 50s and low 60s as well. so not a big spread in temperatures for today from the coastal area to the inland valleys all because of this cloud cover and the cooler air we've been witnessing the past few days. so this is the clouds. by friday tracking some rain moving in. it looks like it's moving a little bit slower than we expected and looks to weaken as it arrives. that rain moves in, here we are friday morning, no rain. and then as we go into the afternoon, some more clouds moving in. a few spotty showers but most of

was putting a pause on the reopening for high schools who have not done so. that announcement came around the same time as branson high school in marin county announced they were ending temporarily indoor learning because students held a party and they were not following proper covid-19 protoco protocols. they will be required to take covid tests to determine when the school can reopen. parents in livermore listened in to a school board meeting that included a report on the district's reopening plan. so far school leaders have put together a task force with hopes of getting students back in class. so far the district sent out surveys to parents but the time line for reopening have not been revealed. san francisco unified schools have release add time line. they say by january 25th students in pre-k through first grade as well as students with special needs would be able to re-enter the school. they plan to provide an update
