>> i'm marcus washington. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the forecast. what can we expect today? >> it's going to be a chilly morning, but overall a really nice and comfortable afternoon. we are starting out a little bit cooler today. take some time to get out there and enjoy the fall colors because tomorrow we'll see the cold front arriving and some showers late tomorrow evening but the weekend is looking pretty nice once that rain moves out. so i'll detail that with the timeline coming up in a few minutes. mike, any issues for the early morning commute? >> you know, things changed, kari. i had an issue to report. i circled where the crash just was removed from northbound 101 at the old oakland off ramp and a live look shows you no problems through the area. very light traffic flow. the circled area now is not the problem, it's opposite the arrow. southbound and we now have reports of a disabled vehicle. i'll check that and a new crash

as white house chief of staff and considering rival bernie sanders as labor secretary. tracie potts, nbc news. in the meantime, some bay area trump supporters not quite ready to let go of their beliefs the president won this election. they rallied last night in danville. many gathering at the same spot since september. some neighbors hope they'd let up once biden won the race. >> when they were doing it before the election is fine, but it's over. >> a ton of mail-in fraudulent ballots and whether it's 3 million, 4 million, 5 million, i don't know what the number is. it's a huge number. >> again across the country, so far no evidence of widespread fraud has emerged. covid-19 spreading at an alarming rate across the united states with another single-day record set yesterday surpassing 144,000. the situation also worsening in california. recent case rates hold, we should top the 1 million mark today. right now it's at 996,000.

texas crossed that 1 million mark earlier this week. >> at the same time, new hope a vaccine will become available soon. teams are planning the best way to distribute and store the potential life-saving serum. see cierra johnson is live and talk about the role northern california can play if and when this vaccine is approved. >> this week that pfizer announced that they have created a vaccine that has a 90% effective rate against preventing covid-19 and local health officials right now are working to figure out their role in that and how they would and how and where they would store those drugs. now, the vaccine as it is right now requires it to be stored in specialized low temperature freezers to maintain its effectiveness. according to the sacramento bee, uc davis not only has compatible freezers but also looking to buy more. uc davis has been involved in

the trials of the vaccine. they have a team of more than 200 volunteers that are all part of a larger pfizer trial. that article reveals that sutter health has acquired 15 fwrereez that can store 15 to 30,000 doses and some are portable for those pop-up vaccination clinics. kaiser is also involved in trials. the hospital is involved in trials for pfizer and moderna. making progress in an address to the nation the other day, yesterday rather. dr. anthony fauci said moderna will have phase three results in a week. now, in regard to moderna's vaccine, when that data on its effectiveness is available, he believes moderna's effectiveness is that of pfizer. some good news there. also coming up this morning on "today" show gabe gutierrez will

take us to johnson & johnson where they're doing some really innovative things with their vaccine. that's coming up after this on "today" show. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> okay. thank you. a follow up for you this morning one week after reopening the santa cruz beach boardwalk has, once again, closed. those rides and attractions were only open for the locals and this week the county went back into the red tier meaning restrictions have tightened. some of those outdoor games and food and shopping areas will remain open. some bay area restaurants are hoping people decide to preorder their meals to help provide a boost during the pandemic. pedros is one of them. for the first time it is offering a nine course takeout dinner to try to make up for lost sales. >> this should help basically the business to help our people that need jobs and to helping

everybody. >> many restaurants are pivoting like top of the mark in san francisco, which had to cancel reservations for thanksgiving night because indoor dining is now off limits. instead, it will offer takeout. happening today, two different food give aways in san francisco. the salvation army will hand out food and masks to the homeless at the light center and glide memorial church will hand out food, disaster ready guides and both events start at 11:00 a.m. and we all can help those in need right now. we're actually keeping and really a tradition alive. we're kicking off our annual food drive with safeway so the next time you're at safeway, donate $10. this is to make a difference in our community. that $10 really goes a long way for local food banks. >> they certainly could need the help. certainly your heart goes out to the homeless right now because we're experiencing these cold temperatures.

>> absolutely. and we are starting out in some spots down into the 30s this morning. so, we are going to have more of these chilly mornings ahead and then some rain. we're watching out for that, as well, as we head out to work this morning around the east bay. temperatures at 37 degrees in the next hour, but it gradually warms up today. we'll have a much more comfortable afternoon with the sunshine and temperatures at 59 degrees in the east bay at noon and looking at our highs today in oakland reaching 62 and we'll see some low 60s for the south bay and expect a high of 60 today in clear lake. we'll talk more about that weekend rain coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute right now? >> yeah, kari, we'll look at the bottom of the screen. if you're driving through san jose specifically, i'll note the crash left some debris. the sensors not showing any slowing and no problems there. that was earlier crash you mentioned. one of two. now, the second crash is going on in san leandro. actually affecting folks from

is back in court asking the deadline be thrown out entirely. the company claims it's having trouble talking to government regulators saying it seems like they have lost interest in the whole thing. originally, the trump white house had ordered the sale of tiktok saying it was worried the social network was sharing user data with the chinese intelligence agencies, that's something that bytedance denies. sony playstation 5 goes on sale today. unlikely you'll walk into a store and buy one. pretty much sold out. the new x-box went on sale earlier this week. i know laura has an upicadate o that coming up. the markets may take a pause today after a long string of runups. it moved higher after move of several successes in the race for vaccines. this morning a top biden adviser is talking about another shutdown to beat the virus. president trump used to say we would know we done had a good job holding the virus in check

if we keep the number of americans dead between 100,000 and 240,000. we just passed 240,000 and the situation is getting much worse. 8,049 americans have died from coronavirus since election day. we get first-time jobless claims today. that's not unrelated. we get those at 5:30 this morning our time. google says unlimited storage on google photos will end next summer. if you go over 15 gigabytes starting next june. you can store about 33,000 normal pictures that way. marks and laura, they have been promising this since the jets jetson's. builders got the go ahead to build an airport ride share aircraft to take off and land nearly vertically. the car airplane has not been perfected yet.

so, we're dropping back, once again. and then as we go into today here we are at noontime going into the lunch hour and we'll feel those temperatures mostly in the upper 50s and low 60s. it is going to be very much like yesterday and a lot more sunshine and it will be slightly warmer in a few spots as we reach into the low 60s for the south bay and then if you're planning to head out for a walk around sunset, it's going to be starting to cool off once again. so, you'll need a jacket as we come back to the 40s by late tonight. so, we're going to have another cool morning tomorrow but then we get ready for some rain to move in. now, this rain will start to move from north to south and by tomorrow afternoon. now, the system has kind of slowed down a bit and we're watching that, as well as what is going on with eta making its landfall for the fourth time in florida and parts of the gulf and caribbean. this is still a very active system. we'll be watching filling up

your social media feeds and also talking about this rain moving in by tomorrow. starting to see those showers moving in during the afternoon. here we are at 2:30, 3:00. we're starting to see the rain moving in, but this will not be a big weathermaker. it brings in a quick round of some showers late tomorrow night and then it clears out for the rest of the weekend as we are getting ready for some more nice weather. in terms of how much rain we could see, a lot of our rainfall totals will be very light. mostly at about a tenth or quarter of an inch and then next week we have another shot of heavier rain and looking forward to that all next tuesday and wednesday that could bring a pretty good soaker. so, we'll of course have more updates on that. mike, what is the update on the morning commute? >> kari, we'll take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza because at 5:21, we should be seeing more volume of traffic and nothing major and no brakes tapping. just for safety sake as you travel through the more narrow toll plaza there. no problems on the incline. as we look at the map, the slowing doesn't show up yet and

good morning, victoria and her fiance planned a beach vacation in the bahamas. flying from here to ft. lauderdale and then on to the sun and surf in the bahamas. like we said so many times since the pandemic began, they can no longer travel. no longer getting a refund from their first flight, but that

million case mark. i want you to take a look at this graph. this right here show will show you the average number of infections in the bay area. gone up over time but, again, going up again. bay area health leaders are warning about the spike and it may surge. that overwhelmed hospitals. one ucsf hospital said it stockpiled drugs for patients and safety equipment for staff. but with cases going up across the country, those can dwindle. >> stockpile on ppe even though we could run out if the national supply gets low, which i'm afraid of. >> in the south bay, santa clara county transformed the convention center into a hospital back in the spring. they are prepared to do that, again. and it is possible president-elect biden could order a nationwide shut down of businesses to limit the spread of covid-19. how long the possible shutdown like this could last really business owners' biggest fear. >> right, laura. possibly four to six weeks. dr. michael is a coronavirus adviser to president-elect joe biden said our country is getting ready to enter and i'm quoting here, a covid hell. right now over 110,000 americans are becoming infected with covid-19 each day. the rates of infection have increased here in contra costa county. this county has now moved back into the red tier of reopening and tomorrow will be enacting more restrictions. in an interview with cnbc, dr. olsterholm who is the director of the infectious disease at the university of minnesota suggested the country go into another lockdown and that the government could pass a relief package that would cover lost income for people and local government. he believes cases are rising in part because people have pandemic fatigue and are tired of wearing masks and staying six

feet apart. the social distancing measures we're supposed to be following. the cold weather is also driving people inside where the virus can spread more easily. incidentally ucla school of public health suggested the country doesn't have to do a full lockdown to get control of the rate of infections. instead, a model of staggered public activity. so, let's say you have a group of people who want to go shopping. they would be divided into sub gro groups. one in the a.m. and one in the p.m. back here in san ramon not only seeing the rates increase and so is san francisco and that's why tomorrow that city will stop indoor dining and reduce capacity in places like gyms and movie theaters. reporting live here in san ramon, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> that's the consequence as those numbers go up. meanwhile, school districts and families are trying to figure out what next semester will look like and how long they

will have to distance learn after the holidays. kris sanchez live in san jose and this is a snapshot on what some of those districts are deciding. kris? >> hi, marcus. this is a tough decision for families, including mine. we have to decide whether we want to send our daughters back to school for in-person instruction back in january. we have to make that decision by monday. we know the santa clara county office of education provides guidance for the31. these are for students with special needs or falling behind with distance learning. a very different experience for students and staff who will have assigned seats. the franklin mckinley district in san jose, which is a covid hot spot, will continue distance learning through the end of the school year. that's june. all of this is dependent, of course, on the county's new cases, hospitalizations and

transition rates. in marin, suspended in-person classes because of reports of off-campus parties where students were not observing social distancing or mask requirements. test students starting today in order to decide whether to resume on-campus instruction. the state allows schools in the most restrictive tiers even to request wavers to reopen. up to this point, mostly private schools that have gotten the waivers because they can afford the testing requirements that the state has laid out. 61% spike in covid cases in our nine counties. parents and staff told us they would be here outside santa clara county office of education protesting the reopenings this morning. if or when that happens, we'll bring that to you. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. the trial of the accused norcal rapist is wrapping up. he's scheduled to be back on the

witness stand again today. accused of a string of sexual attacks across three counties including hothree in the bay ar. according to a source in the courtroom, waller is supposed to be the final witness. closing arguments may begin monday. well, it started with an east bay high school student expressing his commitment to social justice and then an online threat and hate mail. this morning a truce between the two sides. a high school senior and a senior citizen. it all started when dublin high school student denel mcmahon organized the trivalley for black lives matter rally on sunday. he was stunned when he heard of a facebook post threatening the rally. online mike grant called on nra members and other groups to show up with helmets and invest in case, quote, these blm people start trouble, unquote.

he posted a picture of the boy, as well. well denel tracked down grant and received an apology from him and now the mcmahan family plan to meet with them. >> 29 shares and that made me nervous because 30 people were feeling like this and that is 30 people that are potentially threatening me. >> i thought it was going to be a black lives matter that was not friendly style and we've seen it across the country. >> the two sides are expected to meet in person soon. grant now says to just let the protesters be. two months of debate should reach a conclusion tonight in fremont. that's when school board members will vote on whether the district should continue its campus police patrols. a 25-member task force earlier this week recommended removing school resource officers and using that money instead for what supporters call more proactive safety measures. take a look at this mammoth mountain ski resort getting a

head start on tahoe destinations thanks to a storm last weekend and more snow on the way. mammoth will open tomorrow. if you're thinking about going, though, you better have the lift tickets in hand because opening weekend is already sold out. from here it's a longer drive, but right now north star and heavenly are set to open on november 20th. a couple weeks to get into ski shape, kari. >> and it's nice to see all that snow coming down there. i want to show you some fall colors in some places where you can go see where we have the peak of the fall colors right now. and it's all around the bay area. so we'll talk about that, mike, what is the commute looking like? >> well, things are kind of stopping and starting, i guess. bay bridge toll plaza and looking at more cars coming through from time to time and this shot shows us more traffic flow and no problems and no

5:44 for you this morning. breaking news to tell you about. we just got the job numbers and bright news on the economy. 710,000 americans applied for first-time jobless benefits. that's the lowest since march and lower than experts expected. 6.7 million americans continue to receive unemployment benefits and that's down from 7.2 million a week before. 5:24 right now. president-elect joe biden has chosen his white house chief of staff.

scott mcgrew, ron klain comes with a lot of experience. >> a lot. he's been biden's chief of staff, marcus, back when biden was vice president and al gore's chief of staff and he knows his way around the white house pretty well. biggest job will be helping the president-elect pick a cabinet member, all kinds of cabinet members and other tom officials and the primary focus on coronavirus. we are in our second or third wave depending on how you measure coronavirus infections. it's particularly bad in the midwest. now, nationally more than 8,000 americans have died since election day. more than 240,000 since the start of the pandemic. that 240,000 metric is significant because that was the upper reach of the trump administration's estimates. president trump and his coronavirus task force would often take credit for the low death count saying it could be in the millions, but a number

it's going to warm up and be a nice day. here's a look at our highs reaching into the mid 60s and we're going to see those 60s around the bay area today with a lot of sunshine, once again. now, tomorrow we're getting ready for some rain that will be moving in. with this weather system that's just to the north of us and as it moves in, it will bring in mostly some afternoon showers starting in the north and making it into the rest of the bay area going into tomorrow evening. and by tomorrow night, we're seeing a lot of that rain moving into the south bay pushing out across the bay area by saturday morning. so, we are going to have not a whole lot of rain here as it moves in and out quickly. our rainfall totals look to be highest farthest to the north with spots like ukiah and possibly getting up to over a half inch of rain and the rest of the bay area not a whole lot here and we're going to see those rain chances continuing for saturday morning but then moving out for the afternoon. so, we're looking at a quick one

and done with this rain but it's this to see there's more rain in the forecast next week and bring us heavier amounts. that's something we'll be watching, especially in the time that we really do need these downpours. as far as sierra snow, most of the sierra will get anywhere from four to seven inches and possibly up to about 11 inches in some of our higher elevations. so, a lot of good weather in here but we have a chance to also enjoy our weekend as it clears out just in time for saturday and sunday. mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute? >> well, kari, we're looking at the build over at the bay bridge toll plaza. brake tapping just started the last time we took a look and now the middle lanes with the back up here. the metering lights not registered but does cue the need for them likely as we look at your map. also not the middle lanes backing up at the toll plaza but a slower drive going up the incline. that has been there since we

you're watching "today in the bay" and even for southern california this is a pretty epic car chase. it spanned over 130 miles. get this started in joshua tree and then the driver took off running in l.a. county. he was eventually arrested and turns out a baby and teenager were in that suv. happy to say they're okay. the driver was being pulled over for an expired registration. a small pacific island until now untouched by the pandemic now has its first covid case. the case is on the island near australia. the government says the young man traveling back from the u.s. got infected but they had already been separated from other air travelers because he was considered high risk. health leaders say he arrived at the beginning of the month and so far asymptomatic and quarantined. we all know too well the dangers that wildfires pose and technology tracking the threat.

we started to see some 30s in some our of microclimates, especially in the north bay. but after this chilly start, it will be a nice afternoon for enjoying some time outside. by tomorrow the rain moving in mostly late in the evening and moving out in time for a great weekend across the bay area. as our temperatures come up just slightly in and the sunshine returns. we'll talk more about this and the forecast coming up. mike, any issues right now for the morning commute? >> not issues. i guess backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. we expect it four minutes ago the chp says they turned the metering lights on to meter the traffic across the span. the middle lane still the only ones that really show the backup, but the other lanes should start to fill in soon. we'll look at the map and we see no problems getting to the bay bridge and we should see recovery along the incline what happens when the metering lights are turned on and traffic is metered on the span. this shows a lighter volume because the build is a little slower over at the toll plaza. no other
