coming up the entire east coast of the united states accelerating before finally dropping off its various stages well on its way now to intersecting with the international space station hoping to meet up with the space station about 11:20 or so tomorrow evening so it's going to be a good 24, 27 hours until meeting up with the space station. here's what makes this mission so important this is nasa handing over a real mission, not a test flight, a real mission now to the private sector, spacex spacex entrusted with the lives of four astronauts carrying them up off of the pad and well on their way now to the space station and this is what nasa is all preparing for, really handing over this job going to the space station to the private sector, spacex and boeing. nasa now wants to focus on going long, returning to the moon, maybe eventually going to mars the spacex track record right

now is absolutely phenomenal having had a very good test flight this last summer with two astronauts and now a real mission, four astronauts safely on their way to the space station. really a very good morning here at the kennedy space center. valerie, back to you. >> we wish that crew a safe journey. thank you. the country reaches yet another grim coronavirus milestone surpassing 11 million infections in the past week. it took ten days to go from 9 million cases to 10 million and 2 weeks to go from 8 to 9 million. as they scramble to contain a pandemic we're in minneapolis dealing with delays in test results. good morning. >> reporter: frances, good morning. minnesota reported 16,000 new coronavirus cases on sunday, and even that number might be low because health officials say there's a lag in testing data. they've been trying to ramp up testing in this state, including a new saliva testing at minneapolis airport.

testing can only go so far without extra labs to help process it i spoke to them about the challenges in getting up a new lab. >> unfortunately without a national strategy on testing, each state has had to develop and compete with each other to build testing capacity we recognized z early on that we had to diversify and we had to make sure that we had it based here in minnesota. >> reporter: health officials tell us the tests are coming back at a 15% positivity rate. the governor implementing new guidelines such as ten people or less for indoor and outdoor gatherings and restaurants and bars closing at 10 p.m fran ses >> cory, thank you. just days from now college students from across the country will start traveling home for thanksgiving break there's concern they could be bringing covid home too. nbc's blaine alexander looks at the extreme ways they are looking to keep students and

families safe. >> reporter: it was a semester of scenes like these that health officials blamed for outbreaks at colleges nationwide now experts worry that hundreds of thousands of students spanning across the country for holiday break could bring the virus home for the holidays. >> we want them to remember as they go home they'll be going to a different environment. they may be going home to families where there may be elderly relatives and we want to make sure they go home without the virus. >> reporter: at cornell university officials are urging students to stay on campus but for those who do travel, they are offering exit testing. sophomore caylee zong is one of them she just got tested today. both she and her parents worry about her making the trip from new york home florida. >> i'm going to be isolated in my room, minimize contact with them for a while i want to be safe. i don't want to put them in

danger. >> reporter: at the university of arizona the school's president, a medical doctor, says while they offer testing students are responsible for doing more. >> create a bubble create a small area that you operate in over the holidays so the smaller number of people you interact with, the better. >> reporter: across the country more measures. north carolina's health department is shipping nearly 75,000 covid tests to schools statewide. in new york, suny mandating a negative test before students leave campus at cornell and other schools, if students leave and refuse to test first, they cannot come back. >> what is the safest course of action for students this holiday? >> starting now they need to limit themselves to essential activities only which is going to class, getting food, going to the doctor and exercising outdoors. >> reporter: for some students no matter how home sick, it's not a gamble worth taking.
