moderna's vaccine did not study children, who it will test next. questions remain over vaccinating pregnant women and infants. the u.s. government hopes to provide the vaccine free of charge there's also optimism where it could be distributed at drugstores where people could have easy access to it. despite travel warnings in some states, there's concern about college students heading home and spreading the virus nbc's blayne alexander has more. >> reporter: you've heard health experts talk about the concerns that with the holidays coming up, the best course of action is stay home, not go visit your family, stay in small groups a number of experts are concerned about college students, likely leaving campus, traveling home, and possibly bringing the virus home to their loved ones at the ian vertz of pittsburgh

the president-elect still isn't receiving classified intelligence briefings, so in lieu of them, atransition official tells nbc news that biden will meet with diplomatic intelligence and defense experts today to help him prepare for day 1. our capitol hill correspondent tracie potts joins us with the latest tracie, no government officials are expected at that briefing. >> no, paul. these are outside experts as you noted, and the pressure is growing growing for the trump administration to include president-elect biden and vice president-elect harris as a senator, harris already has the security clearance that she needs to be part of the briefings, but the trump administration, specifically the jane real services administration, has yet to sign off on that. also they're putting together a covid relief plan, a vaccine distribution plan.

they're trying to figure out how to get these vaccines out to millions of people by next spring, and biden is saying it would be easier if the trump administration cooperates. >> what do you see as the biggest threat to your transition right now given president trump's unprecedent attempt to disrupt and delay a smooth transition of power >> more people may die if we don't coordinate, if we have to wait until january 20th to actually become operational. that's a shame, but maybe that's the only way to get it done. >>. >> reporter: the president also considering withdrawing troops from afghanistan and other countries before he leaves office he's getting some pushback on that even from some of his closest allies on capitol hill like senate majority leader mitch mcconnell who said terrorists would like nothing more than to have u.s. troops go back home.

in today's fop stories, hate crimes in the united states have risen on the highest level in more than a decade according to data from the fbi. there were 51 hate crime murders in 2019, which includes 22 people killed in the shooting at the walmart in el paso, texas, targeted at mexicans the data shows there was a rise in religion-based and hispanic-based crimes while crimes against african-americans dropped slightly.
