thank you for joining us on this bay area news. >> the next few days will be a critical test for the bay area. what is usually been a fun holiday week, it has people thinking of possible outbreaks. the second night of curfew is taking effect. businesses are feeli ining the impact. how are businesses holding up with this coming down? >> we talked to a few restaurant owners and operators tonight. they said the crowds were smaller than in weeks past. most went home before the curfew kicked in. tonight, on a sunday night, it's basically emptied out. restaurant owners and operators say customers last night were cooperative. most businesses stopped seating

people just before 9:00, so customers would have time to dine and leave. contra costa county are in the state's purple or most restrictive coronavirus here. one restaurant owner said he closed his place earlier, because there were no customers. he figured the curfew kept people home. >> we closed last night at 8:30, which is unheard of for us on saturday night. normally, we would be open until 10:00. >> there was a drop in customers all weekend. his business will get by as best as it can. but the tight restrictions have peared down his staff. only four wait staff was going. usually they have more than a dozen. the coronavirus curfew will be in effect every night from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and will extend until december 21st.

and could be extended further if needed. i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. we're following breaking news out of san jose. a san jose p.d. saying officers are at grace baptist church where there's roort reports of a stabbing. we have a crew on the way. we'll have it updated as soon as information becomes available. in southern california, more restrictions are going into place as cases soar. dining of any kind outdoor or indoor, is prohibited in l.a. county. that goes for bars and wineries. restaurants can offer takeout, drive-through and delivery under the new order. look at the scene that played out on the first night of california's new scurfew. dozens of protesters gathering

to defy the curfew. they won't enforce the curfew, but if the gatherings get crazy, they will intervene. to the east, more restrictions. nevada's governor had an emergency conference today, outlining the situation in stark terms. cases at annu all-time high. nevada having a positivity rate of 18%. according to johns hopkins, california's current rate is 5.5%. that includes mask mandates fwr everyone inside or out. when coming into contact outside of the household. restaurants and bars go down to 25% capacity. no more than four people allowed at one table. our restrictions are meant to help our health care system from getting overwhelmed. look at this. this week's state positivity rate has gone from 4.4% to 5.5%.

in the last week, hospitalizations statewide jumped by nearly 1,500 patients. let's look at the hospitalizations tonight. there are 5,918 people hospitalized with the virus. it's the first time we've seen numbers this high since last august. 14,000 new cases is a drop since the report was set on friday. as the surge goes up, so does the demand for testing before thanksgiving. ucsf and the latino task force teamed up to provide the site at the b.a.r.t. straight. the mission district has been hit hard by this pandemic. the site is open through tuesday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. the latino task force is three

dozen organizations helping the community in the pandemic. nearly 24 hours later, fire crews remain at the scene of a massive fire in berkeley. an apartment building is continuing to smolder. >> reporter: a steady stream of water poured on to the building, a day after flames tore through the apartment that were under construction. >> it was scary. >> this neighbor shot cell phone video of the fire last night. she smelled the smoke. >> it was huge flames coming out. and they tried to water and let eat go down. and ten minutes, it goes up and down. >> reporter: she says her power

went off. it took hours to get at the flames. >> there's active fires deep in the middle of that building. >> reporter: bruce may is with the berkeley fire department. he says that investigators are coming to assess the damage. >> there's water building to the apartment complex. we want to make sure it's safe. >> reporter: 21 people were at hotels, including an affordable housing project were not impacted. at this point, it's not known how the fire started. let's look outside. san francisco tonight, it is beautiful. we are four days out from thanksgiving. the holiday forecast, huge this week. so many of us stay at home and eating outdoors. going for a walk. and maybe get some exercise, too. everybody is wondering about the

weather. rob is tracking it all. >> if you liked the weather today, you will like it for the rest of the week. mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s. comfortable conditions in san francisco. 60 degrees and similar temperatures in the north bay. and notice walnut creek, mid 60s in the forecast, with winds up to 20 miles per hour. instead of rain drops, it could be the wind, especially around the hills. that's something we'll have to watch. but for tomorrow morning, stay tuned. coming up in ten minutes, we'll talk about this particular weather system passing by to the north.

a closer look in about eight minutes. ski resorts continue to open. heavenly and north star opened last friday. squaw valley, alpine welcomed skiers and snowboarders all week. now, we just need more snow to pack the mountains. president trump has hit another roadblock in his effort to get the results of the election overturned. preside president-elect joe biden's team says their efforts are still being blocked. jennifer johnson has the story. >> reporter: president trump went golfing as he attended the g20 summit. the president's legal team lost another lawsuit in pennsylvania.

$60,000. one congregant sent a note along, saying her children wanted to send along with their allowance. >> we have set the fall goal for 1 million meals. this year, we hesitated because everybody is struggling in different ways. we thought, that's a big ask of a congregation. we decided to step out and see what happened. twin lakes has participated for 14 years. next time you're at a safeway, make a $10 donation. that money goes to food banks. as we begin thanksgiving week, many people are well in the holiday spirit. some are picking up christmas trees and others going to annual attractions with new rules.

he says, now more than ever, it's important for kids to feel that christmas spirit. >> i enjoy children, to whisper in my ear what they want for christmas. it's a wonderful thing. i get to see children this year. i can't approach them close. we do ride alongs with fire departments and we do tree lightings. as long as there's social distancing, everything is fine. the christmas spirit is alive. it's different this year. >> he adds that santa claus has santa bodies that will protect him from the virus. santa-bodies. >> i think dr. anthony fauci said something different to that. >> i didn't hear about the santa-bodies. we're talking about thanksgiving. talking about christmas. it doesn't really feel like that outside.

lot. in the east, more accurately, if we look towards the sierra, we see some snowshowers there, as a system is going by to the north and east of us. you look closely, 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. this looks like an eye chart. you see los gatos and san jose, something before sunrise for the morning. isolated showers, a slight chance. notice the afternoon. rebounding back into the 60s. and the clouds spin out as the breezes start to pick up. you'll see san francisco is breezy at times. might see showers to the north

it's a prestigious honor. the 2021 rhodes collars has been announced. it's been remote this year. 32 scholars were chosen among 900 candidates. among the group, she is from fremont, and graduated from u.c. santa cruz in may. she now works as a transportation planner in oakland. she joins us now. thanks for taking time to speak with us. congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment. >> thank you so much. it's an honor to be here. >> talk about the process. you're nominated by your university. what's the selection process like? >> the way it works, you have to apply to your university to get their endorsement.

after that, you have to write an essay for the rhodes scholarship. that took up my whole summer. after that, a few people are invited to be a finalist. this year, we had 15 finalists in my cricket. district. and you found out you've been nominated. what was that like? >> my gosh. this year was verirtual. i was staring at a screen like this. when they were announcing the results, i couldn't look at my screen. i didn't want to see. i heard my name and i blanked out a little bit. i ran to my parents screaming.

that was a moment i don't think i will forget. it has to be exciting to represent your school in this capacity. on behalf of him and everyone else that's gone to u.c. santa cruz, that's nice what you did there. >> from the moment i applied, i knew i was carrying the weight of my school during the interview. i wanted to push everything forward. >> tell us about what work you were doing? >> we looked at san francisco below market rate. and we used this to provide randomization in a social environment experiment. go ahead.

>> you go ahead, continue on. >> and it's used to provide randomization in a social experiment, where it affects people's transportation forces. i will be presenting that paper at the fourth annual meeting in january. >> i don't want to put you on the spot and ask you what you think of muni. we'll continue past that. you're going to go to oxford. you're going oxford for two to three years. full ride. that's fantastic. what are you going to study there the? >> my plan is to do two masters degrees. it's almost a continuation and extension of what i learned at u.c. santa cruz. and i think you need to be well-versed to be a climate leader. >> you're getting it done. we're also proud, not just u.c.

safety. no reopening date has been announced. a bill that would make national parks free from wounded velt rans is one step away from reality. it's now passed the senate and the house. the changes would make veterans with a service-connected disability, with a free lifetime pass to u.s. national parks. now, the bill needs the signature of the president. tyler perry is giving back this holiday season. workers handed out thanksgiving food baskets at his studios in atlanta. traffic was backed up for miles, as the first 5,000 cars received food and gift cards. there's so many families in need this holiday season. more families than normal. partly because of covid-19. i sat down with george to talk about how the church is

adjusting its thanksgiving meal during the pandemic. so many families out there are struggling financially. tell us about the event that glide hosts every year. this year, it will look different, i presume. >> absolutely. we're seeing it every day. folks are struggling. folks living on the street are being hit hardest right now. we're going to do our best to maintain a decade-long tradition at glide. have our celebration and meal. we'll be serving outside. the street will be closed to traffic. we'll have tents and physical distancing in the tents.

tables and cheairs. our clients will line up in front of glide. this year, they will be enjoying another traditional thanksgiving meal. turkey, am, mashed potatoepotat. we won't be serving stuffing. there's a stuffing shortage right now. mac and cheese, fruit punch. and we'll have goody bags on the way out. >> was the planning process more difficult because of the struggles and seeing more turnout? >> a lot of our folks, you know, a lot of the community that we see every day will be there.

offer up. a friend called the listing and called the sheriff's office. they returned the go-kart and deputies made an arrest. we told many stories of rescues pulled off by police officers and firefighters. >> our next story is just a little different. a rescue, for sure. but the heroes are a crew of public works employees that you can say went below and beyond to help. >> reporter: this is ultimately a story about timing. and the triumph of good timing over bad. >> i froze. >> reporter: the bad happened in september. in the bathroom of her liviermoe home, when she dropped her wedding ring into the toilet the moment it was flushing.

>> i figured it was in the sewer pipes and was long, long gone. jenna called a plumber. it was too late. she was resigned to never seeing her ring again. until recently when she met a friend for lunch. >> i'm telling her the story, have you called the water reclaimation plant? i never thought of doing at. >> reporter: so, more than two months after watching her ring december appear. and this is when jenna's timing couldn't have been better. >> 300-plus miles of the sewer system. >> reporter: mike well says a crew just happened to have been down the street from jenna's home the day before. and the debris they cleared was sitting at the plant. john browning led the crew that had done to work. he was happy to look through the debris, but the chances of finding anything --

>> really slim. >> reporter: yet, after raking the pile and using a metal detector, there the ring was. >> i about died. >> it happened to be a miracle that she called the day after cleaning the pipes there. >> the folks at the treatment plant say they have found things before. never like this. never after so long. for jenna, it's a wish come true. and perhaps, so many of us, living through a year that feels like it went into the toilet, something good finally came out of it. garvin thomas, nbc news. >> he got that story in and it was rejit. he did a great job.

window space. there will be no parade route for the macy's thanksgiving day parade. just not the 3 1/2 million people lining that route. the show will unfold around harold square. it will be more of a runway with a parade lineup b modeling for e cameras. you can watch the macy's thanksgiving day parade here on thursday. normally we expect some rain. and we expect it to feel like winter. but it's been dry, rob. >> not so much. the weather we're seeing and it looks like september or october.

we see a brief chance of isolated showers. we're clearing skies and probably a little more wind at times. not a sea breeze but winds out of the north looking at the hills. we'll look at that in a moment. let's show you the temperatures outside. partly-cloudy skies and we cooled off quite a bit. down to 43 in morgan hill. it's cold. that part of the forecast feels like november weather. for the morning, it says isolated showers. probably giving this storm too much credit. most of the action is going to be to our north and east. briefly, as we say in the future cast, and san mateo coast, might see a few brief, light showers. and clearing skies into the afternoon. the temperatures are performing what we saw today. low to mid 60s with sunny skies and the wind picking up. let's show you, the climatology is usually the leadoff to the wettest month of the year. but the reality, it's not so

good. san francisco and northward, about 25% to 30% of average. storm ranger is looking for some rain. you'll see a few scattered showers. light snow at times in the higher elevations. this is typical of storms coming by, bypassing most of us to the north. and a brief window, 3:00 a.m. to sunrise, maybe a sprinkle or two. on our future cast, we shouldn't have to be looking for 0.1 of rain. we should see a half an inch or more. see if there's hope in the seven-day forecast. there's breezy conditions for the hilltops monday. san francisco, trends towards next weekend. could be seeing mid-60s. that doesn't look great for rain chances. notice thanksgiving day, no rain.

wind at times in the hills. probably 20 to 30 miles per hour. not too strong. friday, we will extend out the rainfall. storms that bypass us to the north, they drop in on the sierra. we'll see wind on thanksgiving day. the ten-day outlook is keeping rainfall chances below average. temperatures will be near average. if you are looking for real chances of rain, just not there, for the forecast as we head through thanksgiving. the temperatures are looking good, as long as the winds don't get too gusty. no rain plans for the holiday week ahead. we can use some rain. not looking so good, as we head into december. at least for now.
