but what have you been able to find out? >> reporter: san jose police put out their first update on the situation for the morning and only mentions road closures, no status update in terms of the investigation. two people were stabbed to death and others injured not far from the san jose state campus. we do know that police have not described the circumstances of this crime but we talked with the pastor of grace baptist church who tells us there were no services going on in the 8:00 hour last night when the stabbing happened. he confirmed the church sometimes shelters people who are homeless but stip we can't connect the two. people who live in the neighborhood were asked to stay away for hours and the crime scene tape certainly is still up. we can tell you that south 10th and south 11th streets from east san fernando to san antonio street are still closed this

morning. so if this is your neighborhood or part of your route you are going to have to drive around a different way. we have been asking for suspect information. there was some conflicting information about a possible arrest last night but police have not confirmed that but, again, they are up this morning and starting to tweet about it. just an update on the traffic drama it's created. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all right, thank you very much for the latest there. 6:01. new phase three raults fresults astrazeneca is 90% effective. while it's less than pfizer and moderna's vaccine results, which is at 95%, astrazeneca says its vaccine can be kept at refrigeration temperatures making it easier for storage at

many hospitals. pfizer and moderna vaccines must be stored in much colder conditions. a surprise announcement from governor newsom. his entire family now quarantining for 14 days after being exposed to the virus. late last night he tweeted they have all tested negative but will follow the guidance. this is after three of his children were exposed to a chp officer who tested positive. newsom and his wife had no direct interaction with the officer. one of newsom's children was quarantined for a possible exposure at school. the governor is also facing criticism after attending a birthday dinner that ignored state guidance. and overnight for you we are wrapping up the second night of that statewide curfew for all the purple tier counties meant to reduce the alarming spread of the virus. that started saturday night at 10:00 p.m. and lasts until 5:00 a.m. every day and will continue through at least december 21st. one infectious disease

specialist hopes people really take heed to this new curfew as a warning sign. >> right now the spread of the virus is at its highest. during the prior part of the pandemic. we are in an ominous situation. >> three counties remain in the slightly less restrictive tier but sources in mayor london breed's office tell "the chronicle" san francisco is likely to move into the purple tier as soon as tomorrow. this is due to ongoing surge. a look at the white house. president trump still not giving up on his election fight asking for yet another recount. in the meantime president-elect joe biden is proepg to unveil key members of his cabinet starting tomorrow.

lot more like christmas in wood side. they have their ballroom ready, very picturesque. outside you can wander through acres of gardens filled with lights. look at all the work that must take. the historic mansion will only stay open as long as san mateo county stays out of the purple tier. a lot of visitors last night called it the perfect pandemic escape. >> i think it is so beautiful. it brings me back to childhood and takes me away from what's going on with the economy. >> lots of tree farms are opening up. abc tree farms in san mateo opened yesterday. they have new curbside contactless pickup. maybe start early if you're hunting for the perfect tree. maybe you want to bring home the little charlie brown tree.

rosa. once that clears out we do have a nice day ahead. highs reaching into the low 60s. for the south bay up to 64 in martinez. we're going to see this weather on repeat as we go throughout the week. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been watching what's going on out there. anything starting to slow people down? >> it was starting to slow people down. let's just show you it is still slowing people down but the back is less than the last time we took a look. green sensors for the most partisan jose does show some slowing that's clearing again north 101 at 680. there is an area to avoid. it's may hughes road that's over there in the fremont area. mission boulevard may be completely blocked.

good monday morning. we're still 40 minutes away from sunrise. if you're heading out for a run redwood city with our temperature trend, we're going to see the temperatures in the low 50s and some low clouds and fog. going to gradually warm up. week ahead is coming up in a few minimum. looking over to free mon, low clouds making it slow to the

nimitz. the fire department and crash activity from what it sounds like. we'll talk about the rest of your commute as it changes coming up. and good morning and a very happy monday to you as well. a lot of silicon valley companies took the whole week off as a throwback to the great recession of 2009. now it's more of a tradition. people working at home probably all that more likely. let's take a live look at the futures. we do expect wl street to have a good day. a shortened workweek, monday in full swing. calling for a rise after more good news about vaccines this time from astrazeneca and oxford university. the dow will start the day at 29,263. the nasdaq and s&p lower friday as hospitalizations hit new records. we're running about one fatality a minute here in the u.s. one of the key differences between the new vaccine and the two that you've already heard about the astrazeneca vaccine is

not mrna, the other two are. that gives us a look at a different way of developing a vaccine and the more the better. guitar center is the latest large retailtory file for chapter 11 bankruptcy. the stores will remain open as they try to renegotiate debt. a bit ironic because a guitar maker says sales were climbing as people stayed home and learned the new hobbies. lots of people learning guitar. cnbc says lawyers for elizabeth holmes want to prevent prosecutors from telling the jury in her fraud case about her use of personal assistants and other habits of the wealthy. they say her wealth, at the time anyway, is not an indication of guilt or innocence. she's not wealthy now. her company theranos collapsed after allegations the blood testing machine she claimed to have invented was, in fact,

fake. marcus and laura, holmes goes on trial in march. that will be quite the event. >> oh, yes, big time. thanks so much, scott. 6:14 for you this morning. home goods is ready to go on line after years of fighting it. the store owned by tjx companies will launch online platforms for all stores some time next year including t.j.maxx and marshalls. they are back to prepandemic profit levels even having to close stores last spring. new ways for customers to track, receive and pick up orders this holiday season. it lets customers view the progress of the delivery on a map in real time when the driver is close by. and share tracking will let you send tracking information to friends or family so they know

when to expect a package. children all over the world can rest easy despite the pandemic. santa claus will be coming to town this christmas. dr. anthony fauci says santa claus is exempt because he has a lot of innate immunity. we've heard it being called santa-bodies and kids can still track santa on december 4th. there will be some changes, parents. not everyone child will be able to get through to a volunteer at norad's call center due to staffing lows. santa is coming to town. no worries there. ho-ho-ho. >> there you go. you can still write your letters to st. nick. go ahead, mike. >> mike was saying have your hand sanitizers, the santa-bodies, everything and get it together. >> santa-tizers.

>> that could be -- oh, marketing. come on now. we'll work on that after the show. a look at the forecast, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect from the forecast today. always working hard for us, kari. we're waking up early this morning. some people have to work. other people are getting ready for thanksgiving dinner already. a look at what's going on as we are starting out with cold temperatures in parts of the north bay. we've also seen fog there and then as we go into the rest of the afternoon we're going to see our afternoon highs reaching into the low 60s, some mid-60s as well in spots like santa rosa. then as we go through the forecast it's going to still be busy in terms of storms further to the north but every time a storm reaches near the bay area it just dries out. so we're looking at more dry weather as we go into the rest of the week. i wanted to show you how much rain we've measured and how that

compares to normal when we look at santa rosa we've gotten 1.4 inches of rain but then we're still lacking nearly 4 inches to catch up to normal for the water year. it looks so pitiful for the rest of the bay area. only measuring a tenth to 0.3 of an inch of rain. when you compare that in percentage, well, we've only measured 6% of the normal amount of rain for oakland and san jose. san francisco and livermore only up to about 15% and so we do really need the rain seeing that we are in an extreme drought, as we look at the outlook for the next couple of weeks, it's saying we are going to have below average rainfall still in this weather pattern where they weaken but we're still getting the cool air. near normal or slightly below normal temperatures for the next couple of weeks and that's what we're seeing even as we go

through the seven-day forecast. a slight cooldown on wednesday and the winds may pick up a little bit more especially for some of the valleys but still gusty winds for our upper elevations. for thanksgiving day only looking at highs in the low 60s and going into the weekend we're going to have some chilly mornings even near freezing by friday and saturday morning. in san francisco expect highs that will reach into the upper 50s and low 60s all throughout the week and once again nothing but mostly sunny skies for those afternoons. let's head over to you, mike. we're dealing with some fog. has that had an impact on the morning commute? thankfully, no, kari. oftentimes fog impact would mean impact. we haven't had any issues due to visibility. let's look at observing and 880 where traffic flows past the coliseum. scott did mention that during this week many high-tech companies have the week off. the commute is different this year, though. we still have a lot of folks heading in for daily duties here

right now at 6:30 breaking news to tell you about. still a lot of questions after two people were stabbed to death at a south bay church. others are hurt and police are still on the scene. we've been there for hours. next what they're saying this morning. plus, bombshell vaccine news for the third monday in a row. another pharmaceutical giant reveals how effective its covid-19 vaccine is. bay became continues right now. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to the roads in a bit. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the forecast starting off foggy and some mist across the bay area. yeah, we're starting out with that and we have some beautiful views as we take a look from sausalito over to san francisco as we approach sunrise. we've also seen the clouds rolling by.

and in some spots those clouds have been so low it has reduced the visibility so we're checking out some of the fog we're seeing right now. it's been misting and drizzling in parts of the south bay. once that clears out we're in for some nice weather. we are going to be dry all week with some mild temperatures heading through thanksgiving. here is a look at the visibility right now where we've seen the lowest amount of visibility up around santa rosa and san jose and we're going to see that moving around. so i'll be tracking that. we'll talk about what's ahead in the forecast coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute? kari, just like you're talking about there's a note for fog in the north bay but as we look it at the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on. the backup not as heavy as you might expect it. this is the week of thanksgiving. now until the end of the year with a have a lighter volume. the map shows you a little slowing across the span but no problems out of the maze. as we move the map down i am tracking a crash. i'll update in fremont, where to

avoid, also the fog and the orange highlighting through the south bay as well as another incident but we're going to hand it off to you for that. that's right. it's breaking news in downtown san jose. kris sanchez is live at a very active scene after two people were stabbed to death at a church. >> kris, what are investigators telling you? >> reporter: san jose police have not talked to us directly this morning. they did tweet out an update within the last 45 minutes but that update doesn't give any information about the suspect or the circumstances. it only mentions some of the roads are still closed around the grace baptist church where all of this happened last night. so what we know at this point is that two people were stabbed to death. several other people were also injured but will survive. the police have not said anything about the suspect or the circumstances of this crime but we did talk with the pastor of grace baptist church and he

tells us there was no service going on in that 8:00 hour last night when the stabbing happened. he also confirmed the church sometimes shelters people who are homeless, but at this point we cannot connect the two. people who live in the neighborhood were asked to stay away for hours and certainly we have seen people walking by and riding by on their bikes and they're getting diverted still this morning. south 10th and south 11th streets to san antonio streets are still closed so if this is part of your route you are going to have to find an alit ter gnat route. these two people who died are the 41st and 42nd homicide victims in san jose this year. the city is surpassing last year's homicide number and even the ten-year average which is 37 for the city. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all right, kris, thank you. there's more breaking news to tell you about this morning. the race for covid vaccine. new phase three results from

oxford university shows astrazeneca vaccine candidate is 90% effective in preventing covid-19 with the full dose. while it's less than both pfizer and moderna's vaccine results which each company says is 95% effective, astrazeneca says it can be kept at refrigeration temperatures. that could make it easier to store for many hospitals. both pfizer and moderna's vaccines must be stored in much colder conditions. restaurants and others struggling in the pandemic must make a whole new set of adjustments for the statewide curfew. >> bob redell is live in pleasanton. the governor and his family are in their own two-week quarantine. >> reporter: correct, marcus and laura. yes, after governor newsom's three children were exposed to a chp officer who tested positive for covid-19, governor newsom's family has since been tested and

have come back with negative test results. the governor did tweet out last night he and his wife and children will follow guidance and quarantine for 14 days. newsom and his wife had no direct interaction with that officer. last week was politically difficult for the governor after he was heavily criticized for his decision to attend a birthday dinner at the french laundry restaurant in wine country after restrictions tightened around the state. the curfew went into effect from 10:00 at night until 5:00 in the morning to limit the number of people getting together to socialize and drink and so they don't spread the coronavirus. nbc bay area reached out to some restaurants in walnut creek. most stopped sitting tables just before 9:00 saturday night so customers could have enough time to dine and leave. one restaurant owner tells us he closed his place early saturday night because there were no customers. he figures the curfew kept people at home and the weather didn't help either.

>> plus it's cold. we closed at 8:30 which is unheard of for us on a saturday night. >> going to keep everyone safe and i feel like no one is doing anything after 10:00 p.m. anyways. >> reporter: now this curfew is in he can until december 21st. you're supposed to obey the curfew unless you are an essential worker, you have an emergency or going out to pick up groceries or walk one of your animals. law aura and marcus? >> san francisco, marin, san mateo counties are all still in the red tier, meaning they don't have a curfew. the people living there, we're hearing they should probably be prepared? >> reporter: correct. so you have six of the bay area counties that are in the purple tier like alameda, where i'm at now. that is the most restrictive tier of reopening. mayor london breed of san francisco, her office tells "the

chronicle" they ebxpect to go into the purple tier some time this week. >> bob redell live in pleasanton, thanks so much. in the meantime take a look at what is happening in l.a. county. they're facing new restrictions following a massive surge in covid cases there. starting on wednesday dining of any kind outdoor or indoor at restaurants is prohibited. it also goes for bars and wineries. restaurants can only offer takeout, drive-through and delivery. under the new order that will be in effect for a minimum of three weeks. a follow-up this morning and a key deadline now extended for victims of the summer wildfires. victims must now aemplpply for assistance by december 11th. fire victims in sonoma are urged to sign up early for the debris removal program slated for next

month. contractors are to clear the debris, ash and hazardous trees. that deadline is december 15th. starting today low-income riders with clipper cards can apply for discounted fares at six more bay area agencies. they give discounts on muni, b.a.r.t., cal train and golden gate transit and ferry. clipper start holders will receive 50% discounts on san francisco bay ferry, north bay smart trains and marin transit. the program is limited to adults whose households annual income falls below $52,000. 6:37 right now, planes, trains and automobiles. if you're heading to see loved ones for thanksgiving we hope you're doing it safely. up next, what americans are choosing in terms of travel this year. plus -- a fractured team to defend the president as arguments get under way. out to wall street this morning and the big board. we are talking about that vaccine that's helping push

pennsylvania set to certify their election results as president-elect joe biden takes more critical steps in the transition of power. and it looks like the president-elect will select more of his cabinet this week. >> scott mcgrew, he's already chosen a new secretary of state. secretary of state, which is probably the most prestigious position perhaps other than attorney general. so it is our understanding, marcus and laura, that the president-elect has chosen antony blinken to be the next secretary of state. he's well thought of in democratic circles and was biden's national security adviser back when biden was vice president. we expect a confirmation of that name on tuesday. now as laura mentioned more states are starting to certify their vote today which if there were an option for an opening from the president to somehow change the results of the election it is really shutting down quickly. in georgia, though, there is

that recount that would be a recount of a recount, all three states went to biden. over the weekend a strange development in the legal team representing donald trump. two members, rudy giuliani and jenna ellis said sidney powell was not part of their team despite calling her part of the elite strike force and appearing with her at that odd, rambling press conference on thursday where she made allegations that the election had been stolen by a team of venezuelans and an algorithm that switched trump votes to biden. they provided no proof as usual and when asked for proof the legal team, one of them, said it's not how the legal system works. indeed that is how the legal system works. powell took it a step further over the weekend accusing the republican governor and the republican secretary of state in georgia of being part of that conspiracy. >> georgia is probably going to be the first state i'm going to

blow up and mr. kemp and the secretary of state need to go with it because they're in on this scam with their last-minute purchase or reward of a contract to dominion of $100 million. >> now we can't say for certain that's what led to the remaining members of trump's elite strike force team to distance themselves from powell, but one way or the other they issued this statement. sidney powell is practicing law on her own. she is not a member of the trump legal team. she is also not a lawyer for the president in his personal capacity. now, meantime, tradition does continue at the white house. the fun stuff. the white house christmas tree arrives today. this is video from last year. this year's tree coming in from west virginia. it will make its final leg of the journey by horse drawn wagon and, of course, turkeys. believe it or not the turkeys spent the night at the willard hotel last night in washington. they'll be introduced at the white house today. if tradition holds they will be

against holiday travel. >> the big question, are people feeling safe? to answer that live to chicago's o'hare airport this is where nbc news' jay gray is standing by. we've seen you all over the country. we're sure you flew there. how did you get there, and how was it for you? >> reporter: yeah, marcus, laura, i flew in yesterday. and the plane was packed. we had a full plane and it's been a trouble in a lot of months and the case everywhere we go. the airport was crowded as well across the nation this weekend. we've seen a lot of airports really doing more business than they have throughout the entire pandemic. that's a concern. we've seen flying passengers growing over the last couple of weeks. still has the spread of the virus. when you talk to those making the holiday trips, what they'll tell you is they've been cooped up for months, they haven't seen family and friends. the pull to do that stronger for them than the risk of the infection. >> okay, well, it doesn't seem

do you have your bird already? ready to put it in on thursday morning? ready. i am ready. we're going to have some nice weather, too. even if we want to go out on the back patio we will have some cool weather but sunshine. and let's get a live look outside right now in san jose as we are starting out with fog, low clouds misting and drizzling in some spots. we are also looking at some very low visibility in some spots especially like santa rosa where we've seen it come down to a quarter of a mile. elsewhere we've seen the fog drifting by. so watch out for that as you're heading out the door. once we get some clearing by about 10:00 or 11:00 or temperatures will start to warm up and we'll head to the low 60s for san francisco and oakland. 62 for a high in san jose and 65 in antioch. up to 66 degrees in santa rosa. as we go through the forecast, we are seeing those storm systems getting very close to the bay area but the rain just kind of dries up before it gets here. we're stuck in this weather pattern with some dry conditions

and at least we do get the cooling but we are not looking at any rain. so then when we look at how much we've measured, santa rosa getting an inch, 1.4 inches of rain, and we still need almost 4 inches to catch up to normal. and then we look at observinakln francisco, san jose barely measuring anything. compared to the normal amount at this point in the season we're only 6% of the normal amount of rainfall in san jose and oakland. san francisco and livermore 14% to 15%. these outlooks give us a look ahead to the next couple of weeks and it's showing below average rainfall. not a whole lot of rain to catch up and we are getting those systems close by so they are bringing in cooler weather so we'll have near average temperatures and that's what we are seeing all throughout the week so most likely next week will be the same as we look at

highs in the mid-60s for the start of the week. some low 60s expected for highs in the valleys going into thanksgiving. mike, how is it looking with the fog drifting around the bay area for the commute? kari, it's a concern but so far no major issues. in fact, very quiet on the freeways as we look at the big map. the bottom of the screen where kris sanchez reports for the investigation of the stabbings in san jose and then over in fremont more details. this crash resulted after a pursuit. fremont police going after home invasion suspects so we're tracking that story. avoid mission boulevard and take niles around that intersection with mayhews road and that is an important concern for folks heading out of the niles area. but the rest of the area shows a good drive through hayward southbound. look at that. it's very clear. the metering lights are still on. happening now for you an

>> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live for us in downtown. what are you hearing about a suspect? are police telling you anything? >> reporter: there was confli conflicting information whether there was a suspect in custody. they have not confirmed that. the only update they've put out some of the roads are still closed here in this nagly park neighborhood. what we know in addition to the two people who were stabbed to death inside that grace baptist church several other people were also injured in that stabbing. it all happened in the 8:00 hour last night. also, the pastor of the church confirms there was no service going on at that time and says that the church is known to bring in unsheltered people for the night when it is cold and so they did have some folks inside at the time. we can't make a connection between the two. 11th street to san antonio streets remain closed. you may have to use alternate
